Store front and an iced campfire mocha

There's no reason the coffee here should be great! But it is! If you want caffeine near the Hollywood theater, this is your only option. On top of no nearby shops, it's a 5 minute walk and open super late, til 10 pm. AND this shop is primarily a table top rpg shop, and a really good one! But the coffee here is still great! The campfire mocha was delicious. Given that the Hollywood theater doesn't even carry Red Bull, I feel like they should have a sign promoting Battle Grounds! This will def be my new pre-movie ritual.

The greatest li'l gaming cafe that could! Inspired by a neighborhood need for an FLGS of its own, the Hollywood district finally has a super game store and a locally-sourced cafe now, too! Every Tues is Mini Painting Night, and there are other awesome events every week for each kind of gamer -- even those that are just beginning to explore the hobby! The genuinely friendly staff and the community support make this a worthwhile drive from any corner of Portland any night of the week, hands down. That's not even mentioning the incredible summer camp they're launching soon, either! (Check that out here, fellow parents! https://piecemakers.us/dd-5e-summer-camp-the-circle-of-everwyr )

I was excited to come for their opening after visiting their booth at Rose City Comic Con. The space is totally bigger on the inside. They have lots of fun games for sale as well as house games in back for play. Everyone was super friendly and kind. I loved how cozy it was and look forward to coming back sometime.

Special Pride month bagel from Spielman's, with a Buckleberry Fog to sip on.

Welcoming spot with friendly & helpful staff. There are small cafe tables in the front, and bigger tables for more involved gaming in the back, as well as an extensive game library to give you the opportunity to try out something new. An excellent way to spend a little time away from a screen for all ages. I highly recommend the Buckleberry Fog made with D&Tea's Shire Second Breakfast, a frosted sugar cookie from Spielman's, and a game of Dice Throne!

I always pass by this place and see people playing in the evenings so I decided to pop in to see…read morewhat it's all about. I came in early in the day so it was very quiet. The two guys who work in the day are very friendly and chatty. I popped in to browse their pokemon collection. They had a good collection of packs and a few boxes. I've been to other card stores that didn't have nearly as many. I was there just to browse, but the guys working were more than happy to entertain me and answer any questions I had and also show me everything they had that might interest me.

I've supported this shop for a long time, and they've supported my passion for the Pokémon TCG. I can literally see cards I once traded in sitting in their binders and display cases. But reflecting on my most recent visit, there are two issues that really stand out. 1. Trade-In and Cash Value Are Low The percentages they offer for both cash and trade are noticeably lower than other shops. A competitor priced the same cards roughly 30% higher--the only reason I didn't go with them that day was because their cash flow was low and they couldn't pay out at the time. That discrepancy alone is frustrating. 2. Staffing & Negotiation Have Become Inconsistent In the past, staff have always treated me respectfully. They weren't rude this time either, but historically they've been fair with negotiation--occasionally offering a small discount or working closer to market value. This time, that didn't happen. They insisted on giving "market value" for just one card and then even less percentage for the rest. I asked for around 40%, and we eventually agreed on a deal involving a $10 card. But at the last minute, I was pressured into dropping the deal by another ~5% "so everyone's happy." The truth is, I wasn't -- especially considering I was already accepting a lower percentage just to make the deal work. If I'm a regular customer, I don't expect special treatment, but I do expect fair negotiation. I wasn't even met in the middle at 35% on a $220 value. Bottom Line: If you're looking for a solid selection of cards and okay pricing, this shop is fine. But if you're interested in selling or trading, I'd strongly recommend going elsewhere. Unfortunately, the stereotype about some hobby shops being cut-throat with trade-ins feels pretty accurate here.

Stumbling across Board Bard Games after dining at a nearby favorite restaurant was a fantastic find, and I'm glad to know I don't have to drive all the way across town whenever I'm looking for a new board game, some dice, a new RPG book, a pack of [insert your favorite] TCG cards, miniature paints, brushes, and all manner of other gaming geekery and gear! Apparently everyone else in the immediate area got the memo before I did, because the place was *packed* with patrons playing pretend with painted plastic proxies of pistol-packing Primarchs punishing patrols and parties of pan-universal peoples...in this case, Warhammer: Kill Team. Every table was entirely covered with detailed terrain, miniatures, books, cards, tape measures and beverages, surrounded by gamers bent forward in ergonomically-unfriendly hunched positions, guaranteed to cause back problems in the future! It's not the largest gaming space in the city, but they pack a lot of product, and people, into it, utilizing every square inch of their real estate to its fullest. I saw several games that I own, or want to own, and enough of everything any nerd would need for the game that fits their fancy. I was very impressed, and will definitely be back in the future, likely sooner than later, the next time my dice betray me and end up in Dice Jail™.
