I stopped in here to check out their selection of Dice Throne items. They have a great selection of games. The space is really big, I was surprised! There's fewer tables than I was expecting. I was also surprised they had all the windows painted over so there's no natural light in the joint! The food and drink menu looks good, but I didn't try anything on this quick visit. I love checking out fun and nerdy businesses and if they have drinks or food, then it is a must visit. I called to see if they were dog friendly and they said they were so my boyfriend and I drove over with our two fur babies. Once we arrived inside, we were greeted warmly by the employees and they kindly instructed us to let them if we had any questions. My boyfriend and I first looked at their menu to see what they had and I love how their menu is themed! They also have lots of pastries both savory and sweet. I got their blackberry Faywild soda (their take on a Italian soda) and pumpkin pie macaron which was tart and delightful. My boyfriend got their white chocolate mocha was he was very pleased with, and he was browsing their TCGs and board games. They have plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy your drinks, snacks or to play board games. Great combination game shop and coffee shop. I've been in here multiple times both to play and to eat and have never been disappointed. The coffee is wonderful, the pastries are great and the breakfast sandwiches are perfect. The staff is very friendly and delighted to help you whether you're getting a latte or need a new set of dice for your D&D campaign, They also have three different spaces for people to game in so bring friends and grab a table. A great place to stop in or stay and hang out for a bit. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. read more

There's no reason the coffee here should be great! But it is! If you want caffeine near the Hollywood theater, this is your only option. On top of no nearby shops, it's a 5 minute walk and open super late, til 10 pm. AND this shop is primarily a table top rpg shop, and a really good one! But the coffee here is still great! The campfire mocha was delicious. Given that the Hollywood theater doesn't even carry Red Bull, I feel like they should have a sign promoting Battle Grounds! This will def be my new pre-movie ritual. read more

Battle Grounds is a super cool gaming cafe. we stopped in, looked around, and bought a couple of games. most notable: the location of this cafe is VERY treacherous if their very limited parking is full, as was the case the night we stopped by. you have to glance really fast while driving by to check for an open space. if there is no parking, you have to drive on past, and it's extremely difficult to find a place to turn around in either direction. once we found parking in a nearby neighborhood, trying to cross the street was extremely dangerous we almost got hit twice. the nearest crosswalks on either side were not particularly close, the street is wide, the cars are moving fast, and there isn't a great line of sight for drivers to see pedestrians. definitely an accessibility nightmare and i'm not sure how they manage to have gaming events here. read more

This is a great spot for all you table top gaming nerds out there! New to Portland, Battle Grounds is half game store and half cafe. Like a D&D tavern wench (not a real wench but a very nice and funny man), the owner will keep you fed and your mug full. Serving a variety of nibbles for your campaign, they offer cookies and other delectable pastries, coffee, full leaf teas, and a small selection of alcohol. So no matter what your preference you'll find a tasty beverage to go with your game! Be sure to have a party member search near the back of this taverns bar to find a not so secret door that leads to along halfway full of games available to play in tavern at no charge. This half also features a private game from for those secret campaigns for a large public hall for those adventures looking to possibly meet some new friends. My party enter rather late in the evening, with only 30min before the tavern wench would tell us to find our way home. We ordered our teas and assorted beverages, myself ordering a Buckleberry fog (highly recommended for those adventurers with a sweet tooth) and grabbed one of the small game tables up font for a short game of Unstable Unicorns NSFW edition. There are small cafe tables in the front, and bigger tables for more involved gaming in the back, as well as an extensive game library to give you the opportunity to try out something new. An excellent way to spend a little time away from a screen for all ages. So fun! Three families gathered with kids in the courtyard room in the back- which feels like you are in a castle- and we played games and ate Spielman bagels, vegan pastries and regular pastries with coffee and Italian sodas for kids. This place is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. It was busy and the other guests were super kind and friendly and the owner was so jovial and helpful! They also sell cool games, like Camels up, Disney cards and so many other games. We played 3D Settlers of Catan and rented it the kids liked it so much! They rent games super cheap. Also the Blue Kangaroo coffee is a big bonus. read more

Absolutely wonderful atmosphere, with a very friendly and cool staff. The rooms used for gaming are spacious and comfortable. Excellent game selection, with gaming supplies I haven't seen elsewhere (dice towers, life counters, character sheets and maps, in addition to board game selection). I saw the grand opening had to be postponed due to icepocalypse, and was delighted to be able to come in today. An incredible atmosphere, great game selection, very friendly and joy-filled staff, wonderful coffee and food. The owner even sat with us and taught us how to play a game while we ate and drank. Visited today with a group of friends, after seeing this place advertised online for a couple weeks. We got an assortment of drinks and snacks and all were fantastic and tasty! We brought some games because we didn't know how the selection would be but they have SO MANY GAMES so we definitely won't bring any next time. Was a great atmosphere and we felt comfortable hunkering down in the large room in the back and playing games for a couple hours. Staff were very friendly and even offered help with learning new games if we needed it. I'd be in danger of spending 3-4 days a week here if it was closer to my house. Check it out! read more
