We went during the day, although this was a "Taphouse" there were quite a lot of families there. The service was ok. The ambience was typical of a sports bar, you seat yourself and the sitting area has 4 tops. Saw patrons coming in and sitting at dirty tables. Naw naw, you can't just hermit it up the entire time the leaves are off the trees, c'mon! I gotta place for you all to visit. I kinda gotta refer to it as a hidden secret, cuz in the laws of location, location, location, this little grub garage ain't exactly in the prime real estate. Half the place is blocked by a bridge and the other half is blocked by everything that ain't a bridge. So, you gotta dial in the perception to catch this place, especially since it has neighbors with more visible joints. But I gotta tell you, and you know I'll tell it straight that if you ain't ever seen this place or you keep forgettin' it's an option, it's worth punchin' the address into the ol' robot map. Now, I didn't come to ramble about a revolutionary new idea that some enterprisin' folk dreamed about after a solid pop fly to the nugget. Naw. This path is many traveled and well worn. Red Hen Taphouse is on the western outskirts of Dilworth on Hwy 10. There's a lot of stuff on Hwy 10, but if you don't wanna go all interstate, you can rely on Red Hen to do a solid job for you if you live east of the Red River. By my own admission, I belong to the "keep forgettin'" camp. Man, this place has weak visibility. But, if you got enough tire tread to navigate the frotage roads to get back there, I think you'll find a place itchin' to serve up some hot grub and cold drinks. I got me my teetotaller tea and Red Hen's mushroom and Swiss. My sidekick run up a tab on a tall glass and the Cajun chicken ranch hoagie. Both of these courses gave us a decent portion without bustin' up our gold reserves. But, I gotta be straight about a condition the ol' Hen is sufferin'. The kitchen doesn't know anything about seasoning up the ol' victuals. Now, for those fair-haired Europeans who live in the area and think a glass of ice water is too spicy, Red Hen might be a draw. But this ol' Slavic got expectations built right into my buds. I'm not gonna punch down over a little salt and pepper, but if y'all in the Red Hen kitchen skim over this unnecessarily overloaded dumpster of idioms, I'll break the important part off on its own right here: Learn to use salt and pepper. White granules is salt. Black granules is pepper. Use butter where you ain't usin' butter, and you are going to start slingin' some Michelin Star regalement. I got it locked down, so don't blink! The rest of you folks, give the ol' Hen a chance. We were given great service on our visit, and those ladies would sure like to keep the heat on while the sun is bouncin' off the ice sheet. Listen, it don't do anyone any good to have to struggle unnecessarily. If you gotta joint on the weekend that's gonna form a line, there's probably a seat at Red Hen waiting for a little cozy work. The fries were salted to the point they were inedible. They seemed to have been double fried and tasted burnt. We also requested some dipping sauces on the side which were forgotten in our to-go order. Also no napkins, which would have been nice due to the items being (expectedly) greasy. I ordered the turkey club which had good bread and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. I might go again in the future but I wouldn't order any fried items because they were so bad we couldn't eat them. read more

The Red Hen is tucked away along Hwy 10 on the border of Moorhead and Dilworth, in a strip mall. This is a nice addition for this area that currently does not have a ton of bar options in the vicinity. There is nothing fancy about the establishment and you kind of feel like you are in a strip mall bar, but that's not really a bad thing. It reminded me a little of a small town bar but not being old or divey. I'm a nachos guy, and after hearing about their nachos, I had to just try that as my meal. It is shocking how large the nachos are. They are prepared on a pizza pan that is probably at least a foot in diameter and the nachos stack up about 4-5 inches high. I knew I couldn't eat the whole thing myself but for as full as I was when I left, you could barely see a dent in the nachos. So if the $11.95 plus $2 more for a meat topping looks like a pricier appetizer here, keep in mind this will feed an army. Sandwiches come with chips but you can upgrade to waffle fries, onion rings or a salad for $1.50-$2. My wife opted for the waffle fries and you get plenty of those. Looking at other food coming out, I noticed many people getting the flatbreads that looked good. After seeing what I believe was the walleye sandwich, I think that is what I need to try next time. We went here for lunch and the service was ok but not great and the food was not very good. We got there at about 2:30 and the restaurant was so quiet, too quiet. My husband and daughter enjoyed their food enough to eat it but it was just ok they said. I ordered the margarita pizza which is a joke it is not a margarita pizza the Lavosh bread tasted stale and gross, the cheese was so unbelievably thick and tasteless and to make it worse they sprinkled what I believe was basil on it, legitimately awful. This was the worst food I have eaten at a restaurant in a very long time. Do not recommend honestly. read more

Decided to go there for dinner because we were craving a beer and burger. Boy were we glad we went! Not only did they have TALL 22 oz. draft beers, but they also had amazing "bar" burgers. Totally tasted like something you'd get a tavern/bar/pub. So good and greasy and tasty. Don't go here if you're watching your waistline. It's not going to help it out at all. If you don't care about calorie intake or fat, come to Red Hen. We had waffle fries and onion rings for the sides...they were good too. The onions were one one my personal favorites of the place. The soft pretzels with beer cheese dip were a nice appetizer too. We didn't have the nachos, which were the nightly special, but they looked amazing! When in need of some good bar food, look no further than Red Hen. You won't be disappointed. read more

I stopped in here today with my mum for she was hungry and wanted to try it out. I said they had really good food, however I was a little disappointed with the service I don't know if our waitress was having an off day or what. But at first it was as though we we're beneath her and didn't really want to wait on us after we only ordered. It was as though she was disgusted by it. She came back with our waters and asked if we were ready yet and we said no, it was as though she didn't really care. We finally order our food we split the Turkey Bacon sandwich and waffle fries. Meanwhile while only being there once before myself my mum noticed they had popcorn, I said well I don't know if we help ourselves or they bring it to you if you ask. (Because some places don't like it when you help yourself to such things). So we asked our waitress and she told us we could help ourselves, however she came off being a little snippy about it. Eventually our food came and we dug in right away. My mum and myself are very glad we split the sandwich and fries because if we would of each order the same thing we would of never finished it we could barely finish the plate of waffle fries which were done to perfection golden brown just the way I like them. The turkey sandwich was layered perfectly on the toasted bread just the right amount of lettuce, turkey, bacon, tomato, and sauce. Each bite was a mouth full of flavors melding together to create one perfect Turkey Bacon sandwich. By the time we we're finished I did notice a change in our waitress attitude she seemed a little more friendly and wasn't as rude as she was in the beginning. We shared a chicken-bacon-avocado wrap with a side salad and fried pickles as our appetizer. The wrap was very fresh and tasty and half was just right for a light meal. The salad was a simple affair, but very fresh as well. The pickles had a nice coating on them and were served with a great tasting dip. The decor is bland, but good for groups of 4-6. The online menu is out dated and wrong. There is NO lunch specials and expect higher prices than online. Not their fault they keep emailing the owner. Small town home town bar they are not. Food was not worth the price. The $15 dollar lunch walleye sandwich was mediocre at best 1/3 the size of the bun. The tartar sauce was good. I met a couple of friends here for food and drink recently, based upon the recommendation of one of said friends; he lives in Dilworth, and suggested it for our monthly get-together. I live in West Fargo, ND, but because we were heading over to his house afterwards anyway, it made perfect sense to go somewhere close-by. This place is located on the far-west end of a strip mall that is on the south side of the Gateway Crossing area (behind CVS). The area is located on the SE corner of Main Ave. and 34th St. of Moorhead (Dilworth), but once you find it, you'll be glad you did! I probably would've missed the place entirely if I hadn't known exact where to look, so you'll have to keep an eye open for it. We went inside and sat down at one of the tables there. A waitress immediately came over to take our drink orders, and I was pleasantly surprised to see many craft beers on tap from breweries located mainly in Minnesota (I love businesses that promote local towns/states). I chose to go with a beer from a local nanobrewery located less than two miles away in Moorhead, MN (Junkyard Brewing Co.'s Hatchet Jack Baltic Porter); delicious! After bringing us our beers, the waitresses took our food orders. We decided to try the Basket of Fried Jalapenos for the table; the friend who recommended the place (and I) decided to go with the Walleye Sandwich w/ Waffle Fries, and our other friend went with the Black & Bleu Burger w/ waffle fries. The fried jalapenos came out first, and the first thing I noticed about them was that they were cut-up long and thin, which gave them the appearance of curly fries. The batter didn't encompass the jalapenos, which meant they weren't super greasy. Not bad, but I thought the beer batter that they used would taste better on fish, so I was secretly hoping that our walleye sandwiches would be cooked in the same Finnegan's beer batter; wish granted! Easily one of the best fish sandwiches I've ever tried! It was served on a white hoagie roll with lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce on the side. The fish fillet was bigger than the roll it was served on, and that was a good-sized roll! My friends also liked what they had, and after having another beer we left. Overall, I really liked this place, and I certainly wouldn't mind going back there. The only drawback is that it's a 20-minute drive from my house; not a big deal in a bigger city, but when you're used to having everything you need within 5-10 minutes of where you live you get kind of spoiled. When this place first opened, the menu and quality were much better than what we experienced last night. Usually, we get the wings with boom boom sauce. It was a delicious spicy bbq sauce - which they no longer have. They also downsized their menu items taking off the Veg Head Burger and some gormet salad options. Now it's a true bar menu. We decided to split a order of wings with regular buffalo and Parmesan. They were pretty good, but needed to be cooked another minute or two, as some were not crunchy and had pink spots within the middle of the bigger wings. We also split the Walleye tacos, these were truly sad, sad, very sad, tacos. They consisted of two frozen fish sticks (I couldn't tell they were Walleye.) shoved into cold homemade cole slaw that filled up half the taco. And that was it. The whole taco. Not very creative, bland, runny, and overall not impressed for $11.00 for 2 small tacos. Seriously, if you were going to make tacos, why would you fill half the tortilla with runny cold slaw and shove the fish sticks into the top? That is not a taco, but a failure. When we came here before last year the walleye was fantastic and seemed to be beer battered. Now it's like frozen fish sticks from a box in the grocery store :( C'mon guys!! Get your quality cooking back! What happened?? The steak night is still very very awesome and on point! One of the best steak night places around. But that's about it now after what happened to your menu and cook. Please bring back the good stuff and put your creative stuff back on the menu! That is what set you apart from other bar food! And for the love of god, please re-make those fish tacos....if you are charging that much for them, at least you can put fresh toppings and some delicious homemade sauce on them instead of stuffing them into a pile of dripping bland cabbage. lol read more

For a tap house there were not very many selections of draught beer. There were 16 in our party. Food took awhile once ordered and place was not real busy at 9:00 pm but no problem. Food came from kitchen in waves 2-3 people served at a time with about 5-7 minutes in between until all Served. I had Walleye tacos. It was three fish nuggets per taco, I was not impressed with the tacos at all, fish was Over fried it was dry. Tortillas were hard maybe it was a feeble attempt to toast them? Coleslaw was dry. A casual evening with the tasty appetizers and drinks is great! I highly recommend the nachos! However, If I had to give the food a grade, it would be a B-/C, at best. The "Chicken Cordon Bleu" sandwich was adequate at best. The plain white hoagie bun was fresh, but the sandwich was quite dry and tasteless. Small portion of chicken breast, topped with a deli-thin slice of ham, a little lettuce, a too-small amount of honey mustard, and some cheese that had been melted but chilled to a solid again. On the other hand, the side of onion rings were overdone to the point of being blackened, and the wonderful server returned them to the kitchen. Went to the Red Hen for the first time with a group of friends on July 11th. Our server was great (Leif) although he did goof up my order. I ordered the burger with pulled pork, onions & cheddar cheese. (Without the bun) Also asked that they put the onion rings that are meant to be on top off to the side. When I got my food I had a huge pile of onion rings & decided to eat them & take my burger home...What a disappointment the next day when I realized there was no burger under the pulled pork! Called & spoke to Drew & was told that's what I ordered! (He looked up my tab.) That's not what I ordered, that's what he wrote down. End of story, won't go back! read more

Average taphouse eats. Pub pretzels were good but the beer cheese dip was very thin and almost soup like. Burgers were light on seasoning but otherwise good. The house made chips were nice and thick but again lacked seasoning. I can see how they would make good nachos which I've heard are great but never tried.
