Founded in 1997 by Chip McElroy, Live Oak was built with a simple idea "make beer for people who actually like the taste of beer." In 2015, Live Oak moved to their current location on a beautiful property along the Colorado River, opening a taproom and biergarten. One its unique features...it's off the beaten path of other breweries. Live Oak Brewing is north of the airport and backs to the Fast Park remote airport parking lot. At first glance it looks like it's a convergence of a fire station and deserted manufacturing plant. The grounds are impeccable...tall statuesque trees, lush green vegetation and an extensive outside biergarten. It feels like you are in a nature bubble. Interestingly, Live Oak Brewing has its own on site 18 hole disc golf course (different from traditional golf) located directly on the brewery's property. Live Oak Brewing's interior has the feel of a German Hofbräu...homey, spacious, and welcoming, with long communal tables that encourage conversation and human interaction. You can see directly into the brewing space, with large tanks and equipment. Also, board games are available if you choose to play. Live Oak is family friendly and dog friendly. In fact, Groot, the owner's dog, freely roams through the brewery drinking area. While I only had sips of beer (not a big beer drinker), my friends enjoyed their beers. Live Oak Brewery Company is a super fun place to hang out.

Service great, as the gentleman working offered an explanation for their selection. It was a little disappointing that they had such a limited selection at the time I visited but maybe next time they'll have more options.

We were excited to see that they had a few vegan options, which can be hard to come by sometimes. The open kitchen was fun to watch, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can really feel the positive energy as soon as you walk in. I ordered the Chana & Spinach, a traditional chickpea curry served with coconut rice, green chutney, and crispy papadum. It was delicious and definitely had some heat to it, which I enjoyed. My fiancé got the Curry Trio and loved every bite. We also shared the vegetable samosas, which are vegan, and by "shared" I mean I ate 2 1/2 and he had 1/2 ;) plus I ordered a Diet Coke. There wasn't a vegan dessert option, but my fiancé ordered the pistachio dairy pop and loved it. Everything was flavorful and fresh. My only small suggestion would be just a little more rice with the Chana & Spinach dish, but honestly, that's a minor thing. They have a nice outdoor seating area, which is perfect if the weather is warm enough. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and we'll definitely be back. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

There's always something going on--from trivia nights to showing all the major sporting events--and Saturday/Sunday often feature live music, which makes for a fun weekend hangout. The food trucks are also consistently good, so there's always something tasty to pair with a beer. One of the things that really sets this brewery apart is everything beyond the beer. They have a soccer field and sand volleyball courts that host recreational leagues, giving the place a real community feel and making it easy to spend an entire afternoon or evening there. Overall, it's a great spot with a laid-back vibe, plenty of activities, and something for everyone. We keep coming back, and it's one of the first places we recommend to friends looking for a great brewery experience in Austin.

But I did another sweep just before our Austin trip and became aware of it and then I got the opportunity to try a beer of theirs. The beer Steve and I had was an IPA by the name of Polaroid Ghost. This was a good IPA and it had a great unfolding bouquet with it's flavor profile. It kind of had a unique signature to it which we both really liked and wasn't like a usual IPA at all. Flavors to look for with this beer are dry, clean and a dankness to the flavor profile. There is a hoppy bite but it isn't extremely strong like some IPA'S. It's just a bit more subtle. This IPA is also smooth in body which makes it a nice drink. Polaroid Ghost is a good beer to sip on in the shade as summertime turns up the heat.
