Neutral Milk Hotel. I love it.

like the movie High Fidelity (which this place reminds me of), great record stores are as much selection as they are knowledgeable staff who can help you fill in the gaps in your collection. Crooked Beats has both in spades. Top Five record stores on the east coast.

I don't know why this store has such high ratings. Being somewhat new to the DC area (I've been here for about 4 months now), I figured one of the first things I should do is acquaint myself with some of the local record stores. Obviously, Crooked Beat Records came up on a quick Google search. Though I had been to AdMo a few times, I always put off going to visit Crooked Beat Records. One early evening, though, I finally made it a point to go. Perhaps it was me hyping it up, but I was so disappointed. I went in, expecting great things because of the reviews on Yelp... but it was such a disappointment. They had a good mix of new vinyls and used vinyls. On the wall, they also have merchandise (shirts, etc) for purchase. They had a huge stock, but there was nothing GOOD. No gems at all. I mean, that'd be all right if they actually priced their stuff accordingly... but nope. Pretty much everything here is overpriced. For example, I picked up a Dusty Springfield record here, looked at the $12 price tag, and immediately put it down. I had literally just been to Joint Custody not 10 minutes prior and saw that same album (in the same--if not better--condition) for a dollar. I... I just legitimately don't understand some of these reviews. I understand everything in DC is a bit more expensive, but when other shops in DC have better prices, that should be a sign to shop elsewhere. I don't know if a lot of the reviewers are casual vinyl collectors or only got into it to look "cool" (and not for the actual music), but if you're pressed on time in the DC area and want to make your record store rounds, you can definitely skip this place. I've been to record stores all across the country (and in different continents) and this is probably one of the worst I've ever visited.

I like all of the plates and decorative items near the entrance, but the sections of items are not clearly labeled and I'm unsure of the logic of the organization. Paintings are also scattered on the first and second floors - hanging items in general aren't organized well. Photo frames, especially the small ones, are overpriced in my opinion. The appliance section is very limited and I haven't seen much of anything worth buying. I haven't really interacted too much with the people working there, but I've never had any issues with checking out. Most of the items worth checking out are by the front, but I've found some great clothing and artwork in the back areas. Plus, they have discounts on select items that changes on a regular basis. Overall, a typical thrift store and a fun stop if you're visiting Old Town Alexandria.

We can't even get past the test pressing stage. The test pressings we received were terrible--clearly not inspected, and when we raised concerns, our rep admitted the QC person had been fired. Seriously? I asked if they could have Record Industry handle the cutting and plating--like they used to when I last worked with Furnace--but instead, our rep said the entire project was being transferred to Record Industry. When I asked what role Furnace would play now, I was told they would only package and ship the records that RI presses. On top of that, I now have to place the order directly with Record Industry. Record Industry doesn't offer the same vinyl variants that we already sold for preorder. I placed my original order with Furnace Records back in February 2025, and now it's July 2025 with no resolution in sight. I was warned not to press with Furnace again, and I regret not listening. This process has been stressful, frustrating, and incredibly disappointing. Their quality control and customer service are abysmal. I highly recommend pressing elsewhere. And if you must use Furnace, do yourself a favor and hire an outside engineer for cutting and plating.

The first set of test pressings had large amounts of pops and ticks and were rejected. The second set of test pressings didn't show up until SIX MONTHS LATER, were Out-of-Round (off center) and still had all the previous pops and clicks. Furnace Record Pressings now refuses to refund my money, saying the warble sounding pressings with pops and clicks is within their tolerance. The delays alone made me miss the holiday season. The project has now been set back a year. I run a small label and am not an a-hole, I was super patient with Furnace and have never experienced this type of treatment from any supplier. For some reason the excellent pressing plant Pallas in Germany has partnered with Furnace I have apprised them of this situation. I would post a video of the off center record playing but no video on Yelp. You can see it at https://www.facebook.com/1771134075/videos/10208944197920121/ Addendum 5/5/2021: Furnace has decided to give me a refund, This does not change anything else I said in this review. I still lost a lot of time and money. FYI the original lacquers for this 2-LP set were cut at top mastering facility Bernie Grundman Mastering.

The shop had a great variety of books and bookish items from stickers to clothing and everything in between. I loved looking through each area. There was also an author there signing books and some seats throughout the store to sit in. However, I wish the staff was more friendly and attentive. When we were ready to check out, the two staff members were chatting to each other and didn't even acknowledge us waiting to buy our books at the counter. I placed the books down and greeted them politely, and the staff member directly behind the register didn't greet us, continued their conversation with their coworker and just started scanning books without even looking at us or acknowledging us. It was the staff member to the side who then started friendly conversation, but again, the cashier didn't really say much of anything besides our total and if we wanted a bag. Neither of the employees even mentioned the author who was there signing books, and there was no info (at least that we saw) in the store about the author, the book or signing event. I kind of felt bad for the author. Around the store, there were also little signs about books and what they were about, etc. Except, for a large number of them, there wasn't any stock of the book it mentioned. I wish they would update them or remove them if the book sells out. There were a few where I loved the note and wanted to grab the book, but then it wasn't on the shelf. I want to support small businesses and absolutely love romance books, but the customer service really needs improvement here. Sadly, this experience doesn't make me want to come back.
