This studio is filled with great instructors and students. It's always kept clean and organized. There are many options for glazing, and different options of clay that are held at the studio for purchase. I appreciate this place being more of a class setting than those one-time activities for date night or to hang with friends, because ceramics takes awhile to get a good handle on. Plus there is a process of the bisque and glaze fire which cannot be done in a day. My recommendation is to take the 8-week class and show up to every class. At the end of the course, I'm sure you will have a better understanding of pottery. read more

I'm 4 class into the ceramic wheeling throwing class with instructor Chung. We have an hour of learning and then a few hours of practice. During the practice sessions, Chung would personally assist each of us on how to improve our throwing technique. Sometimes, we'll see instructor Yee, whom adds on the extra fun of banter in the classroom. They also have open studio so that students can practice during the week. Special out out to Cassandra! This is a very fun, bright, and cheerfully creative space. The layout and design of the interior gives the studio an orderly sense that is conducive to playful exploration with the wheel and the various types of clay. I've been working with clay for 30 years but don't have my own studio so I was going to other studios in the area. When a close friend told me about Red Ox opening I knew I had to check it out because it was closer to me than any other studio in the Bay Area. I've been a member since November 2017 and I'm just thrilled to be a part of this fantastic studio. The hours couldn't be better (24/7 for members) and the studio is very clean and well kept. Cassandra, the studio manager, is incredibly friendly and warm. Roger, the owner, is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and responsive. If someone mentions a need, such as a separate place for wedging porcelain, he doesn't waste any time making it happen. Another thing I love about this studio (there are many things) is the turnover for firings. I seem to always have something ready to be glazed or finished. read more

I joined Red Ox as a member mainly because I really value the 24/7 access. I belong to another studio as well but its open studio hours don't align well with my schedule. Red Ox is a real treasure. The owner, Roger Yee, is extremely knowledgable and helpful, and also an all-around great guy who is fun to chat with on a wide range of subjects. The atmosphere is pleasant and supportive. Students and members share ideas and there is a collaborative spirit about the place. Lots of really good and creative work is happening there. One of the highlights of Red Ox is the firing. Roger runs the kilns himself, and he is very careful. Cracked pieces are quite rare. The throughput is phenomenal- I've never waited more than a week for a piece to be either bisque- or glaze fired. If you've ever wanted to try clay or looking for a new studio this is the place. Roger is undoubtedly the premier teacher and kiln firing expert in the area. This new studio is a great space, fully equipped, has a variety of classes and will probably fill up fast. You can join with a membership or take classes, either way there's great studio access. Firing fees may seem little different at first glance but having been in Berkeley where they do the same ( this is actually less expensive) it works really well and you get what you pay for. ie great firings! They have an open hour on Fridays 7-9 PM so you can try it out free of charge! read more

My daughter encouraged me to take up pottery again. I was on a mission to produce a few specific pieces and was looking to do this on my own as I have in the past. I called the studio where I usually fire, this time wanting to take a class and they suggested Red Ox since they we're booked. So happy they did! Now, instead of a few pieces, the class has inspired me to create so many different ones. My instructor and the owner are so positive, helpful and engaging. The other potters you encounter there are open and friendly. You can take classes and during that period have access to the studio anytime they're open or become a member and work whenever your creative juices are flowing 24/7. Took a class from Roger this morning. Spinning pottery is way more technical than I thought it could be. The student and member community here at Red Ox are second to none! If you sign up as a monthly member you receive your own key and can come and go 24/7! This is far better than another studio in the area that only offers studio time outside of your 3 hour class if you pay extra for limited open studio time which is nearly impossible to benefit from if you work a 9-5 Monday through Friday job. That being said, Red Ox is somewhere I try to spend all of my free time. I have made so many new friends here and I meet a new amazingly talented student or member at least once a week at Red Ox. The quality of work coming out of this studio pushes me to step outside my comfort zone and it's only made me a better artist. As a member you will receive discounts on firing fees and class fees (if you wish to refine your skills etc). Love this place! Roger, the owner and manager, is a great teacher; patient, communicative, and really zeroes in on what your specific challenges are in technique. Cassandra, the administrative manager, is warm, friendly and helpful. The space is well organized, with new equipment and plentiful tools. Red Ox is just 2 months old, so don't expect all the accessories of the Walnut Creek studio. But it's fun to be part of something new, where your input is valued and responded to quickly. Red Ox Clay Studio is the absolute best ceramics studio in the bay area. Roger Yee has created a true community that is welcoming and personal. Hours spent there are like going home to visit family. It is a place to get away from the real world and immerse yourself in a creative and fullfilling zone of contentment. Just started taking classes again after many years of not doing pottery and I am amazed at how good an instructor Roger Yee is. He breaks everything down into parts and repeats as needed to learn and improve skills throwing. Additionally he connects with each student on their individual needs at their learning speed. And the studio is magnificent - Extremely well organized and CLEAN!! which you don't often find in pottery studios. He really knows how to set up a studio so that it works for the students. I've already signed up for the next class and will be joining as a member as my skill level develops. I highly recommend the studio and Roger as an instructor - and they have great pieces of both student and instructor pieces for sale in the studio. Additionally they also have other instructors who also teach wheel throwning and a couple of teachers who teach amazing clay sculpting and hand building. Very talented staff. read more

This week I had the privilege of being a guest for an open night at Red Ox Clay Studio and I want to start off by saying thank you for the warm welcome and hospitality. My experience that evening left me with a strong desire to come back. Being intuitive and talking to the owners that have a great deal of experience, i think they are very down to earth people with an honest goal to teach people about pottery. It'll be a great healthy addition to Concord especially in this particular shopping center for kids and adults to have a fun. As I for one have never experienced pottery nor thought of pursuing until now, attending this place of establishment with the care and teachings from Roger Yee I confidently do see myself coming back. Maybe beginners luck, but I found it to be quite easy and enjoyable with how simple and kind the teachers instruct. Everybody is different but i see it can be a great Hobby to deal with stress. This particular evening i came with a family member and a friend. Very fun sociable experience to interact with new and old people with how the tables are set. I think it would be a great experience for all different types of groups to enjoy whether it be with kids, friends, family and Especially a date night. I ecstatically look forward to be following up with attending classes. This was an honest review and haven't found anything to dislike thus far.
