This theater is such a wonderful place! The prices are good, the staff is lovely, the theater is immaculate and it's not at all chaotic and noisy like other theaters. The seats are classic theater seats and not recliners, but that's fine with me. They're comfortable and in good condition. The theater rooms are small, which I also like. I love the fact that this is a non-profit theater right on Main street as well. Unless you really want to see something in IMAX, I would skip, the huge, noisy, chaotic and expensive theaters for this one. You won't regret it! read more

I have been going to Red River Theatre for eleven years. I am a loyal customer and former volunteer. The popcorn is the best and made using coconut oil. I like that they show films that you sometimes don't see showing at other theaters. The customer service is very good and the sound and quality of the films on the big screen are excellent. As a nonprofit movie theatre, the memberships that you can purchase go a long way to help Red River Theatre. They also have a fun event during Concord Market Days. They sell movie posters, DVD's, CD's vinyl and more. I have found some real deals at this event. I love going to the movie theatre and I want to always support movie theaters. I couldn't stand the thought of a world without movie theaters. Streaming is fine but I love the entire experience of actually going to see a movie at the theatre. I've been to this movie theater twice in the past two months and both times there was one person working. What should have taken 2 minutes (buying tickets) took 15. THEN the second time not only did it take far longer than it should have to buy tickets, but when the movie started the picture was on the sides of the wall! We went out to say something and couldn't find ANYONE. I don't think I can keep coming back here. read more

This was our first visit to Red River Theater. It was our fifth wedding anniversary and we celebrated it with what is uncommon for us; dinner at a great Mexican restaurant and an avante garde movie, in this case, The Boy Erased, the movie version of the true story of an Arkansas boy who is outed to his evangelical pastor parents and his subsequent tale of horrors, abuse and psychological​ torture at the hands of unqualified "conversion therapy" counselors. The movie, of amazing quality, was at home in the Red River venue. It is cozy and yet has a superb sound quality. The staff is friendly and eager to assist. And a well-stocked snack selection of which we didn't partake as we had just finished dinner. The seats are first-quality. If you go there, remember to have a pdf of tickets on​ your smartphone​. The cell reception may be poor and your reservation and ticket may not come up in the smartphone when you come in. Fortunately, the staff is quite tech savvy and will look for ways to help you find the tickets in the system. Overall, a superb experience. read more

Great place to see current independent and foreign films! The Red River Theatres opened its doors in the Fall of 2007 after a long absence of independent theatres in the Concord area since the mid 1990s. This member supported/non-profit theatre is a great alternative to the mainstream multiplexes, which shows many films you can't see anywhere else in NH. Red River Theatres were named after the 1948 classic Western "Red River" starring John Wayne. For showtimes, tickets, and membership info, check out http://www.redrivertheatres.org/ Red River has two larger theaters (actually a lot smaller than the screens at typical movie theaters with a little over 100 seat capacity each) with rocker style stadium seating and equipped with 35 mm projection and Dolby surround sound. A smaller 48-seat screening room has DVD projection for NH filmmakers, shows indie films and can be rented out for meetings. The movie screen is covered by red curtains which opens mechanically before the flick. The concession stand offers Coke products, popcorn, candy, baked goods, sandwiches, beer and wine at fair prices. My friend and I were here recently and got to see No Country For Old Men. The matinee price was only $5.00, what a bargain! The theatre is packed on the weekends. And on weeknights and weekends, parking is free in Downtown Concord including in the adjacent parking garage. This is a fun little nonprofit movie theater in downtown Concord, NH that has the movies that can sometimes be hard to find on the big screen. This past year we have seen The Favourite, The Old Man & the Gun, and the Shape of Water. Each theater has stadium seating so there isn't a bad seat. The chairs are comfy and recline just a bit. The popcorn is real, as is the butter. They serve beer and wine. It's never overcrowded and you can buy your tickets online. It's a bit of a drive for us but well worth it. read more

Cute little theater in downtown Concord, it was a stressful week (I was in town for a class) and I was in need of some entertainment to unwind. My wife and I couldn't find a lot to do, but she was excited that this theater was playing 'The Big Sick.' This theater reminds me of independent theaters at home like Salem Cinemas and The Cabot. A few mainstream movies featured along with Indy and special screenings that are offered in their repertoire. These smaller theaters provide unique and different showings that large theater brands don't offer. Varying rates were available to seniors and students (which was cool) and they offer membership to patrons to help support the theater (very cool). Staff were pleasant at this business. The concession stand was the usual, overpriced popcorn and candy. But unfortunately that's the norm, not a knock against the theater. The stadium seating was really cool and one feature I found quite enjoyable, you didn't have to worry about a tall individual seated in front of you, hell someone could stand up and wouldn't obstruct your view. Since 2007, Red River has been a great theater in the area: fresh, real buttered popcorn, clean, comfortable seating, reasonable price. I loved it, except that it has a political agenda; the movies they choose to show are, almost w/o without exception, left leaning (Elvis & a Beatles doc were the only exceptions). A friend had bought me a gift cert/membership just before covid closed the theater. When it finally reopened (one day a week!), we were told those would NOT be honored, unless we made a NEW membership donation. Huh, some "non-profit". They then decided they'd require VAX PROOF, BUT ONLY ON THURSDAYS! How does that make sense? And even now, July 2022, they still do it, & you still hv to wear MASKS UNTIL YOU SIT DOWN. It's all sjw political theater. Ridiculous. Now they're back to normal business hours, so I went to see "Elvis". We hadn't been there in awhile. The small size popcorn containers that used to be a decent size, are put into a medium 8 or 10 oz coffee-size cup, AND of course the price went way up. I asked the man at the concession counter, "What happened to the size?!" He said, " It's the same size, just a different shape cup." He was obviously told by mngmnt to say that. I guess they think their customers are stupid. 3 strangers near me overheard, and agreed with me. We were not happy. Then when we sat down, it was very apparent from the taste, that they now use a poor quality "butter", & have stopped using the original. From 2007, when Red River first opened, it was a wonderful asset to the Concord area. They, like all indie theaters, always were noticeably Left- leaning, non-inclusive, non-diverse, intolerant, & 'politically correct' when it comes to different views. Now they can add pretentiousness and 'corporate greed'. Concord has a large ageing population, w/ diverse views, not just those of Red River mngmnt. We are very disappointed. read more

Seeing a film here is such a pleasant experience! RRT is a not for profit and still tix are cheaper than the multiplexes. You can buy water for $1. Beer, wine, coffee and soda is available. Popcorn in reasonable sizes at realistic prices. Art for sale to admire or scope out. The films are well chosen. There are many events-panel discussions, fun tie-ins, community-buliding get togethers over a film. As a local, I can go alone & find someone I know to sit with, if I wish. If you are "from away" come to this mecca of quality film and chat up one of the locals. RRT invites us to play well, learn and laugh together! read more

Last night my husband and I attended a special screening at Red River. I was really excited to go because I love indie movies and thought I'd become a lifelong customer. I'll never go back because I've never been treated like such shit by people in customer service. I've heard from former patrons that at Red River you're allowed to BYOB, and while that seems strange, there are quite a few venues in NH my husband and I have attended that do have this drink policy. Upon arriving at the theater with a large group, my husband was asked to put the six pack we'd purchased for the show back in the car. Keep in mind, my girlfriends (who were at the ticket booth) were right behind us with two six packs in hand. None of us had had anything to drink that night, and were all under the impression that BYOB was okay. Well, my husband was singled out here. He, being respectful of the policy, ran outside to put our beers in the car, and my two female friends carried their six packs right into the theater. I was shocked that they weren't spoken to at all! Why was my husband singled out while my two girlfriends were not? Still my husband and I wanted to have the full experience of watching a movie with a brew in hand, so when my husband returned from the car, he went to go buy us a couple beers. The manager on call refused to serve him. So I went out to buy a beer, and she refused to sell to me too. I asked for an explanation and she said she could refuse to serve anyone. I asked for my money back and was offered free tickets to another show. "I'm never coming back here," I said. I went back into the theater and my husband and I sat through two hours of awkwardness. And I think it's important to note that my friends bought beers from the concession stand and had their six packs through the entire viewing. Now, if someone smells like booze or can't walk a straight line or has a hard time processing or communicating, I might assume that person is drunk and wouldn't serve them. We were clearly sober, and this girl Emily shouldn't be a manager making calls like this especially if she can't identify what drunk looks like. After the movie, my husband went to get an explanation from Emily who repeated the drinking policy about 3 times. The incompetent manager got the executive director, Angie, who was much more personable and reasonable. Angie is going to refund me for my tickets. We will not be returning. We've NEVER been treated so poorly! Also want to add: even the EMPLOYEES were drinking while watching the movie. To me, that's just unprofessional. And it further blurs the lines re: drinking policy at Red River. read more

Red River is a really nice non-profit theatre, and we are so pleased to add it to our list of places to see independent and limited-release films. It's located right on Main Street in Concord, near a lot of small businesses and local (i.e., non-chain) restaurants, and parking is plentiful. The theatre has only three screens, with two for its regular engagements and one for special showings. We were in the latter for screenings of the Oscar-nominated live-action and animated shorts, which were a steal at $5 per screening per person. Regular films aren't much more expensive. The concession stand is small but well-stocked and relatively cheap; BF got a beer for $4. And--this is important, especially for the ladies--the restrooms are really clean! While it's a bit of a drive from southern Nashua, it's fun to make a day or evening out of it. Kendall Square Cinema offers more selection, but it's considerably more expensive than Red River. The Wilton is a little closer and less expensive, but there are fewer showtimes. All in all, Red River is a fantastic option. read more

So long as you live within a half hour radius of Concord, if you love independent cinema then this place is a god-send for you. They've only got 2 movies going at a time (plus one-off special engagements), but their limited selection of available showings is well off the Hollywood radar, and their ticket prices are highly affordable, so it's a budget-friendly way to experiment with art films you won't get a chance to see in other theaters, and might have to hunt for a copy of once they hit DVD. Ticket and concession prices are both reasonable, and if you're there for a weeknight or weekend show, the parking is free; so it's a cheap-ish date. And if the movie's good, it just might be a highly memorable one as well. The screens aren't so big, so you lose a little bit of the movie magic that the big multiplexes have to offer, but this theater makes up for it by offering quality films, and in a very comfortable environment. I live in Manchester, but whenever I catch wind of a movie I'd like to see playing here, it's easy to find an excuse to make the half hour (each way) drive to Concord for it. read more

On a side note...of you're looking for a place to eat beforehand, don't be fooled with O Steakhouse next door. It might look like a good place to eat, but it is terrible. I absolutely love The Red River, but sometimes I've gone to a screening of something I thought was in 35mm and got stuck watching a DVD. I'm fine with that if I know what I'm getting into, but they don't always specify that on their website, at least not the times I've experienced this. Still, the prices are great, concessions excellent (you can grab a beer or wine to sip during the show), and the staff is friendly. They also do a great job of getting quality indie/foreign stuff, as well as the end-of-year Oscar contenders (the Oscar-nominated shorts are fun, even if they are on DVD), and local productions. I'm giving this place 3 stars. The theatre istelf is fine - it was everything you'd want from a movie theatre and it looks like they have cool and interesting events and films all the time. Honestly, this place is a great idea and other than my personal experience, I think anybody would have a great time here. But. I arrived to the theatre with a 6 pack of beers. I didn't purchase my own tickets to the event and was told it was BYOB. When an employee asked me to return it to my car, I complied and returned it with no problem. Then I came back and went to purchase alcohol, and this is where my night was ruined. The employee at the register tells me she has the right to refuse any customer alcohol. I asked why, and she repeated the policy to me. The movie was beginning in three minutes, my wife was waiting in the theatre, I didn't want to make a scene, I clearly had no power in the situation, and apparently I had done something wrong, so I just walked away. It wasn't that I wanted alcohol so badly that not having it ruined my night. I wasn't drunk when I showed up, I was actually to be my group's DD (the beers we're for my wife more than anything). What made me angry is that this employee, who I thought was the manager at the time, just decided that I was being a problem and applied a policy to me with zero oversight. I approached the employee after the movie and got the same repetition of the policy over and over. I told her I understood the policy but wished to know why it was applied to me and asked for a manager. The manager was very nice and apologetic. I regret not asking for her before the movie at this point, but she refunded my wife's money and was very understanding. It's not like I want the employee fired, but I think the theatre needs to revamp how they apply this policy as essentially accusing me of being drunk when I wasn't was embarrassing and ruined my night with no reason or recourse. I understand not wanting already drunk people to get more drunk, but I also don't think I presented myself as drunk when I arrived and watched moviegoers getting refills all night -pregaming is not ok here but getting tanked at the show is. I understand that liquor laws are strict, but you can't just arbitrarily let employees alienate customers at their own obviously flawed judgement. read more

This theater is so great! It's much smaller than most but is an awesome movie watching experience. The titles they have are mostly independent and indie films that are hard to see or even find if you are in this area. Prices are more than reasonable on everything from tickets to drinks, and the staff is super friendly! A definite recommend. read more

This was our first visit to this theatre. We saw RBG which was an excellent movie. The theatre has 3 small screens with very comfortable seating and clear views. They have alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, sandwiches, popcorn and candy including fancy chocolates. It was a great, intimate experience and we can't wait to go again. read more

My friends and I have informally started a Friday night, movie night at Red River Theatres and I would recommend others try it also. We go to whatever is playing at 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. then head out to dinner in one of the neighboring restaurants afterwards. We actually don't make a plan to do this, "regulars" just tend to show up. It is a very welcoming and friendly place and I have had dinner or a drink after the movie with many different people who I met at the movie. The movies are so interesting you WANT to go out and discuss them afterwards, even if they are something like one of the Oscar nominees or something less mainstream. The best time I had recently was viewing the Oscar nominated live action short films, had never seen these before and was totally entranced. What great short films, try to see Tuba Atlantic, a hoot! At Red River, prices are reasonable ($7 for members, $9 if not) , the theatre is really clean, the seats are comfortable, the popcorn is fantastic!!!!, wine and beer choices are good and the viewing audience is polite and attentive. It doesn't get better than this. read more

Red River Theatre is a tremendous asset to New Hampshire. My husband and I are members and frequently go there to see independent films and special events. It is always a comfortable experience. They've converted all the rooms to digital projection, by the way. The theater is conveniently connected to a parking garage which has no parking fees at night. read more

This is by far the best independent/foreign film theater I've been to. The ticket prices are fair, and the snacks and drinks are very reasonably priced (no need to sneak in sodas and skittles in your giant purse when you can buy a glass of wine or beer and a popcorn for just a few bucks!). What I like the best was that although it's a smaller-sized theater there is stadium seating with comfortable seats and it is very clean. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and parking indoors just under the theater was a big plus as well. My mom and I were also surprised and pleased by the politeness and general quietness of the crowd we watched Slumdog Millionaire with - we didn't hear a peep from anyone the entire movie. I wish we had a theater more like this in Denver! read more

As huge movie buffs, we have been staying in Concord while construction of our new summer lake house is going on. We were told about the Red River Theatres on Main St, here in Concord real close to our long stay hotel. Great crowd, serious movie people, great popcorn, and everyone with big smiles. Red River Theater is one of the main reasons I love living in Concord. My wife and I have had a standing date for dinner and a movie since we before we were married. Where we go for dinner may vary, but Red River is always our favorite place for movies. They have a friendly staff, amazing indie films and special events. Even if you can see the movies on the big screen in your living room, nothing beats the shared experience of seeing a movie with an audience of real movie buffs. Because Red River is community owned, the best way to really enjoy this experience is to become a member. read more

I have conflicting feelings about the Red River Theatres. The theater itself is very clean, the seats in the two main theaters are very comfortable, and the staff has been friendly and helpful every time I have visited. Ticket prices are reasonable ($5-9 depending on the screen and time) and hitting up the lovely concession stand (complete with beer and wine) will not break the bank either. If my experience stopped here this would be a 5-star review. I love the feeling of community here and love that I have found a place closer to home (and more reasonably priced) than Boston to see movies. That said, beware the screening room. The screening room is the equivalent of seeing movies in a room at local library (a few rows of folding chairs, a projector screen) but much noisier. The location of the room lends itself to noise pollution from the adjacent parking garage and the chatter of guests and staff in the nearby lobby. If you're watching a movie without a lot of pauses in the audio this may not be a problem but if you are watching a quiet film there (as I did Melancholia) this noise may really take you out of the movie experience and/or drive you crazy. Outside of the screening room I have never had a poor experience with Red River patrons and had found them to be respectful (if not delightful) people. For some reason though the small, intimate feel of the screening room makes people feel like they can talk throughout (or attempt to talk over!) the film as much as they want. This has been an issue with every film I have seen it that room (the last being Carnage this weekend). I do not expect silence but Red River patrons don't normally shout out things like "I have that EXACT same phone!" or "Here we go AGAIN! This is insane! INSANE!!!" or "What is this crap?!?!" during the movies I have seen in the main theaters there. I know that Red River Theatres cannot control its patrons (nor should they have to) but its definitely a problem. This issue coupled with a dim projector screen has forced me to part ways with the idea of going to the movies in this room. If a movie is in the main theaters of Red River Theatres I will happily buy my tickets there over anywhere else within driving distance. If a movie is being shown in the screening room, I will have to pass from now on... read more

Great little theater playing more art and independent films. The theaters are clean and have comfortable seats. There employees are always courteous and polite. They have the best popcorn around and put what taste like real butter. The popcorn is always fresh. I would go to this theater just for the great popcorn alone. Red River's a winner. I don't usually like going to the movies. The crowds annoy me, most of the time it seems very impersonal and the costs seem out of line if you want to do anything more than buy a ticket (I died a little on the inside when I bought two diet cokes and paid ten dollars, and it wasn't the cokes that were killing me). I suppose this could be said about pretty much any place where a ton of people gather for entertainment (sports venues, concert arenas, etc.), but for some reason movie theaters are more irksome just because there is more competition. These places should be pushing for customers in the simple areas like customer service and experience. Outside of Chunky's, most of New Hampshire's theater options are similar to one another: multiplexes with stadium style seating, maybe an IMAX or two, with severely overpriced junk food. As such, I'd rather wait four months and Redbox a movie for two dollars and watch it with my fifty cent bag of microwave popcorn. Red River is different. No, they don't really get the blockbuster films. As of this review, they are showing The Artist and The Descendants off of their Oscar nominations. Obviously, if you go to see the mainstream Hollywood flicks, Red River isn't going to work, and that's okay. They usually have 2-3 movies showing at any given time, most of the time they are the upper echelon of independent flicks. The theaters themselves are nothing amazing: comfortable enough seating, ample leg room, somewhat smaller screens (big enough IMO) but not a whole lot to complain about. To be honest, you probably won't be seeing the types of movies at Red River that will take advantage of ridiculously large screens, so it's not a huge issue. However, I find the experience to be substantially better at Red River. First, and this is a function of the movies they show and the fact that they are independent, but the crowds are better. For the two traditional movies I saw (Jane Eyre, The Artist), the crowds were older, polite, and properly behaved. For Rocky Horror*, it was a full house but there weren't any ridiculous quarrels and they were better movie watchers than most regular crowds. *Rocky Horror? Great place for a virgin. Nothing too embarrassing but the experience was a lot of fun and they had everything you needed. Probably not the best veteran run through, but the staff made it fun. I think they elevate themselves on the other things they provide. The tickets are competitive compared to the multiplexes, I want to say it was $9.00 for an evening show. The concessions is a small stand, but it was probably a good 1-2 dollars cheaper for soda and popcorn (with actual butter) than at other theaters and they had other options (alcohol, sandwiches, etc.) that were reasonably priced. I wish they had a Red River type theater in Manchester, it's a very nice place. read more

Red River Theatres is one of the best places to visit in Concord NH. It's the kind of venue that makes Concord a nice place to live. It's a small community style theatre that shows the kind of movies that never make it to that jumbo megaplex out on the Loudon Road. Some of the best movies you will see are at this cinema. The movies shown here are so much better than the bigger theaters. This is a small, independent cinema with comfortable seating and a great sound system.
