John has been helping me bike better for over 20 years. Whether it was outfitting me for winter rides, guiding my first mountain bike purchase, setting up a custom Zwift (amazing job!), or consulting on a new bike purchase, he has always brought deep knowledge and integrity, along with a true passion for cycling. And of course, a sense of humor! John is a straight shooter who genuinely cares about getting people riding. This kind of energy can't be bottled. Highly recommend. read more

The owner John did a custom ATB build for me, and I am thrilled with how it came out. This started as just a frame that he had, he asked me about the type of riding I wanted to do, what style I wanted it to be, and he took the parts choice and style to the next level. The complete bike is just a joy to ride! Thank you! read more

i'll preface this by saying i am NOT an experienced cyclist Red Star sold me a bicycle for $800 that, within 20 miles of riding, had the tire completely separate from the frame, consistent issues with the shifter, and some of the loudest brakes i've heard. when asked if he would take it back given all of these issues and was told to kick rocks more or less. avoid this seller at all costs. Response to seller's comment: don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. the front tire has completely detached - that's not something that should be "regular maintenance" due to it being tubeless after barely using the bike. telling us it's "not a tinker free" tire is a ridiculous excuse for a faulty product. i'm over the money, keep your $800, but acting like either my cousin or i are at fault for a tire being completely detached after less than 20 miles of riding seems farfetched. if you don't want shit reviews, do better work and don't tell your customer it's "buyer's remorse" when they have a complaint. best of luck read more

John did a fantastic job fixing up my bike. It hadn't been an easy bike to ride since I got it off marketplace, but being a casual rider, I thought the issues were user error and my abilities. John fixed the gears and brakes, installed a rack, and even added a kickstand (I never realized how much I'd appreciate a kickstand .) The bike is so much easier to ride (and stop) now! So yes, he does great custom builds for serious gravel and mtn bikers, but he also does a great job tuning up bikes for the casual Bike Partier & Sunday rider like me. And he's affordable, so definitely worth going to Poland from Portland. read more

John went above and beyond to make our 3 year old's dreams come true! We got a tow behind bike from a friend that needed only the attachment piece. We called John on a holiday weekend and he offered us a whole bike set up that included everything we needed because the part was almost impossible to find(and crazy expensive when found online). My son didn't want to wait for parts to come in the mail to try his new bike so we agreed to buy a whole setup from John instead. When we arrived and my son sat on the bike it was unfortunately too big for him. John had put so much time and energy into getting it ready specifically for my son so I told him we would take it anyways! Our son would grow into it. John was more than accommodating and told us we didn't have to take a bike that didn't fit our kiddo(even after all that work) and allowed us to buy just the attachment we needed off the bike instead. He sacrificed his own whole bike setup, removing a necessary part just to make our kiddo happy. Our kiddo got to go home and ride his new bike in about 30 minutes for $30 instead of waiting weeks and paying well over $100 online. Thank you John! We will always recommend and will be repeat customers in the years to come! read more

I came across John & Red Star Cycles mid-Feb with a dream about commuting to work. During one of our winter thaws, I took a trip out to his location to test ride a bike. Though it was a chilly test ride, John stood out there with me to help with fitting and shooting the breeze. I went home with a bike that day. Fast forward a couple months later and John saw me one morning commuting in the rain and suggested me some fenders. I happily obliged and he installed them not long after. After some more seat time on the bike, I wasn't happy with the way the front derailleur was shifting. I mentioned this to John and he mentioned friction shifting. I sat with that suggestion for a week or so as I tinkered with the front derailleur. Coming from BMX/MTB world, I'm not a stranger to bikes and doing at-home maintenance, but I am a stranger to front derailleurs and couldn't quite get it dialed. Long story short, I dropped it off, he replaced it with friction shifter, brought the bike back to me, and I couldn't be happier with the way the bike shifts! John goes above and beyond for his customers and I'm happy to be riding one of his bike builds around town. read more

I've known John for many years from working together in the outdoor industry and I can attest to his knowledge and know-how. The dude loves bikes. He loves finding bikes, fixing bikes, beautifying bikes, and rehoming bikes. The only thing prettier than a bike is somebody riding one. John knows this. I also find, fix-up, and rehome bikes and am so grateful for my connection to John. He is a great resource for bike intricacies and often has just the part I am looking for. His prices are fair and he stands behind his work. A rare find, indeed. read more

John is a stand-up guy. Went to Red Star Cycles to get a frame and some components for a vintage bike build. Not only did John have everything I needed, he was eager to show me the shop and humor all my random vintage parts questions. He even helped me load my new frame into my car in the pouring rain. Great place, great service, great conversation, all of the above. Can't recommend Red Star highly enough. read more

I brought John an old mountain bike that needed a complete rebuild. He walked through every step of the process with photos and gave great suggestions. He built me an awesome bike out of primarily used parts at an affordable price! I couldn't be happier with the results and am happy to support a local shop. John brings new life to bikes old and new with don't awesome mods and restorations! read more

Red Star is worth checking out! John is a solid bike tech and has a seemingly endless range of stock to choose from. I bought a fat bike at the beginning of winter from Red Star and they were able to get the fit just right for me. This has become my favorite bike shop and look forward to seeing what's available for years to come. read more

I had a great experience with John at Red Star Cycles! I had bought a bike online and have absolutely no business assembling it. John not only built it for me, but made some very needed brake/handle bar modifications. The bike rides really well, and is much better suited now for this 5'2 cyclist! read more
