This building has significance to my family and so it was on my list as I was driving through. It's an old school house and when you walk in there is a Buffett like table. You seat yourself, waitress comes to you and sends you in your way. I asked for all "southern suggestions" and her suggestions were spot on! I had squash casserole, collard greens, fried chicken, cheesy grits and pecan pie. Such kind folks and an overall amazing food with a taste of my southern roots. read more

Visited Red's one Sunday afternoon. The fried chicken is famous! All the fixings are so good for the soul. Topped it all off with some delicious pecan pie. I tried some pickled cucumbers, which I've never had before, and they were a new and exciting treat for my palate. Our waitress even found the recipe and shared it with me! Red's has been on my punch list of places to try and eat in Alabama for a long time. I finally was able to be in the area around lunch time on a day they were open, so I stopped by. Red's has consistently appeared on lists for best fried chicken in Alabama, and now I can say that they deserve to be at the top of that list. Their fried chicken is hot, perfectly brined, perfectly spiced, and blows the shirt, pants, and socks off anything a Kentucky colonel, a Louisiana sailor, or any other restaurant that claims to make fried chicken claims is the best. Now, they had a mess of other southern vegetable delicacies to choose from, including greens, beans, collards, mac-n-cheese (yes that is a vegetable in Alabama), and some of the most unique corn bread I've ever had. So if you find yourself driving down 231 from Montgomery to Troy around lunch time, do yourself a favor and take a detour to Red's. I hear they have wonderful pie. But a drum stick called me back for seconds. So maybe next time. read more

Whoa! Best REAL Country Cooking I've had in a long time. I've been meaning to stop here for a long time but always thought I was in too big a hurry ... it's a few minutes off the highway. Next time I will leave early or get where I'm going late. So worth the stop. If you haven't tried Southern Cooking here's the perfect place to start!. If you're from the South and miss your Grandmother and Mom's cooking this is your place. The food is Great, the old school house is the real thing. Someone had told my husband about this little gem and we decided to try it as we were on hwy 231 heading South. We called it "a wholesome adventure"! The food was truly southern and all seasoned just right!! My plate of fried chicken, bbq, squash casserole, butter beans, creamed corn and fried cornbread was so fresh and amazing!! We were both too full for the homemade pies but maybe next trip!! The ambiance was so sweet! We listened to the locals talking and laughing!! Some stopping at others tables to chat. This place is a hidden gem we have found on our way to Florida. It is very neat and local. Definitely has its own character! Mainly it is southern cuisine buffet (8$/9$) with several meat options, side items and salads. They also have a menu. Food is tasty. I came here with my husband's family one day for lunch. When I asked him beforehand what to expect from this restaurant, he replied, "It will probably kill you". I couldn't tell from the tone of his voice whether or not this was a good or bad thing. In my mind, being killed by food means that it is generally awesome. But then there's the medical side of being killed, which led me to think that this particular joint was probably unhealthy. I was right on both accounts. Excellent food. Redefined my idea of what "down home southern cooking" is. Taste buds were very happy. That being said, I could tell the majority of what I was eating was flour, butter, or sugar based. Since I don't eat like that every day I decided not to care and just enjoy my meal. Pros: food, service, quaint atmosphere. Cons: general cleanliness. First let me say I haven't been to Red's since Red was there (and his wonderful daughter) which was more than 20 years ago now. I'm now in my early 30's and live in LA as a film/TV producer. Recently I was asked by a fellow southerner what I missed the most. I said I would trade in my entire Hollywood existence for just one more meal with my family at Red's. The cornbread. The biscuit muffins. The chicken. The 1950's style 'salads' with marshmallows. I can still see the drawn map menu perfectly. I can still see those rope swings and feel the thud of smacking the tree. I still remember Red's daughter gifting me a cookie tin of her old nail polish when I was maybe 7 years old. Good people. Good food. Good memories. As a city slicker, I was a little terrified when we pulled in. This is the most intensely Southern place I have ever seen. On the way, we drove past more churches than houses (lots of people made it clear they are voting for Jesus in 2020). Well, if this is the most Southern it gets, then I've found my happy place. The food was greasy and made me feel like throwing up, but the vibes were immaculate. It was worth every bite. You'd think pie did not belong in a closet, but you'd be wrong. A buffet-style place that also offers a menu. Their fried chicken is a little on the dry side, but the pulled pork BBQ, chicken livers, and fried catfish are excellent. Their vegetables are cooked in the traditional Southern manner and are very, very good. I always eat way too much because I must have some of everything. Although I haven't had their pies, everyone who has eaten them raves over them, so they must be pretty good. The service can be on the slow side, but it's ususally because they're so friendly that they stop and talk with everyone at every table. Even then, your glass will never go empty. read more

We found this restaurant while driving down the highway looking at Yelp reviews. We were driving from Chicago to Florida and wanted to find something local. It was a few minutes down a scenic Alabama road to find it, but this place was worth the drive! The food was delicious (we tried a variety of things and we loved everything) but the service sets this place over the top. Every single person we talked to was so friendly and helpful. I had read about Reds Little Schoolhouse in a magazine and wanted to try it. We were on our way from Birmingham to the beach and pulled up Yelp. I was so excited to find out that the closest restaurant was Reds. The food was fantastic. There was a buffet featuring fried chicken, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, salads and the best sweet potato casserole, and fried cornbread. The staff were attentive and friendly. We will definitely make this a stop anytime we are in the area. We didn't try the desserts but next time, we will purchase a pie to go. read more

What a fun little place. Not far off 231. Very down home cooking. Buffet: Sides were pretty good with the casseroles as the highlight. Fried chicken was great. Wow, I would have driven farther for this meal. This place is out of the way, but worth the drive. The restaurant was extremely busy on Sunday afternoon at 12:30. I almost left when I got one of the last parking spots. ( A few church vans were in the parking lot) I thought we would have to wait 30 minutes or more. I had heard the food was great, so we checked in. In less than 5 minutes, we were seated. This place runs like a well oiled machine. It was well organized and well staffed. The food was delicious. I heard it was locally grown and high quality. I believe it. I'm not sure how, but even the chicken gizzards were tender. The broccoli slaw was great as well as the fried chicken, the cream corn, and the baby butter beans. You will not be disappointed. read more

This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere. But it is a great find. We went on 'steak night' --a Saturday night---but I did not know that. They still had fried chicken on the buffet. The steak was huge and my friend that at it liked it. The chicken did not look as great but it taste ok. I think I would prefer to come at a time other than steak night. Pies were very good.
