I have had a safe deposit box and RCU for many years, and I realized that it was really a waste of money. In today's economy, I'm trying to save as much money as I can. I arrived, and there was a very long line for the tellers, and most business is now done with tellers. They used to have a customer service desk and you could get help there for safe deposit boxes, but that's been gone a while. Thankfully, there was a woman, I believe Maria (sorry, can't recall, but I think that was it) was able to help me so that I didn't have to wait in the line. The bank itself is a solid financial Institution, however they know nothing about customer service since their is only one branch in Novato, wait times in line can be as long as 30-35 minutes and if you have to go back to work that's no bueno. Bank clerks are taxed because their are so many people their not always the nicest. I know they have grown leaps and bounds but never added a new branch in Ignacio where lots of people live, why not? Overall, the credit union. is a good place to use for banking. I was pleasantly surprised at the American Canyon location. I dropped a $100 bill on the ground in front of the teller but rather than giving it to the man who found it, staff checked the camera to see who dropped it. I didn't even realize that I had dropped it but was pleasantly surprised when they asked me about it! I wish more locations were available in San Rafael and/or central or southern Marin. The San Rafael location is nicely remodeled but like other branches, the lines are very long! I do prefer banking at a credit union rather than a bank so I will be patient and thankful to have good support staff, adequate hours, I wish branches stayed open until 6 pm., and a friendly smile once I am at the counter. Redwood Credit Union - Love the new look! - Banks & Credit Unions Near Me - Novato, California

This branch offered personal loans and ore approves people online but their in person bankers had to call the loan officers who are not at this branch even though they advertise that they have products offered as such locally. It was very disappointing to be mislead online and the bankers at this branch was not willing to make any effort to actually help local customers. Too bad they could have a better score and they will keep losing customers if they keep assuming things about people based on looks and telling the applicant : we have seen this before and it will get declined, but apply anyway. Which was so discouraging and already painting a horrible outlook for this branch for the next 10 years if they dont change. The one star is for the online loan officer that pre-approved the application. The negative 4 stars are for the bankers that assumed things about the consumer regarding the loan considering that the consumer had more than 3.5x the income for one lumpsum payment for the loan. Why it was not approved is a flawed systematic mistake based on old predictions, one that will not be a part of the future from 2025. We will be surprised if this bank branch survives past Spring 2025 if they keep rejecting investors this way. read more

After today i will avoid REDWOOD CREDIT UNION at any cost. i had 5 major auto loans with RCU in the past all fully paid within 2 years max. Now i reached out to get an equity line to one of my properties. The reason for gettung the line is to paid of my credit card debts clearly it's a good reason and they even offered to pay it off in my behalf. So after going back and forth after 6 WEEKS of deliberating back and forth they NOW TOLD ME i am not approved!!!! OKAY I UNDERSTAND AND MOVE ON BUT MY QUESTION IS what took 6 weeks?????? Most of the people here in marin are SELF-EMPLOYED And i know i have capability to pay based on my history of not missing any single credit card payments and with a collateral that has enough equity. I was given the numbers already which i would pay $878 for monthly payment when i used to pay $5000 just for my credit cards alone. I have spoken with some very kind, human seeming individuals who work for Redwood Credit Union but tonight a robot named Annelise led me to write this review. She was so horrible; instead of helping me find a solution to my overdue car payment, and providing a response to why my application for payment adjustment was not acceptable, she only repeated "if you refuse to provide..." assuming that I had refused to provide something. My guess is that she went through a training that taught her Redwood Credit Union policy and how to respond to customers with specific concerns but that she had a very limited ability to speak with real people in the world. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about these guys at the Novato branch! If I could give it more stars, I would! These people are top notch! Especially a big thanks to David Agular! I've been treated better than with any other financial institution I've dealt with. So better in fact, I moved my funds and closed my account with US Bank. An account that I have since 2005. I originally inquired about a vehicle loan and I was approved immediately! And after sitting down with David we reviewed my finances and credit card debt. So I decided it was probably time to do a debt consolidation. At 26% interest on the credit cards, it was a no brainer. I was approved for that loan immediately as well. The very same day! David literally saved me thousands of dollars in interest payments! And I need to give another big shout out to Tim Mooney! He is RCU's in-house insurance agent. During the purchase of the vehicle, Tim saved me several hundred dollars a year in car insurance! So I ditched AAA of which I was a customer since 2011. This place is a one stop shop! Unfortunately I decided to give RCU a try and opened up 2 business accounts and 1 personal account. Today has marked my final attempt to excuse their poor service. 1) Their lines are forever long - pre, during, and post COVID. I detest going to the bank for transactions but sometimes I have to and have to block what seems like an hour from start to finish. 2) Their Novato branch had zero personnel who can answer questions about loans and mortgages. You have to call for someone to answer your questions, and when you do you'll be met with a hold button. Their personnel really gives no care to your inquiries (although I spoke to a Robin who was quite informative and helpful- past agents were poor). 3) Here's the final straw - a domestic bank sent at 9:30am still has yet to be posted to my account. They claim they process incoming wires twice daily from 12:30-1:30 (nope, still not in my account), and then again from 3:30-4:30, so I will know by 5pm (you know, when they close- how convenient). And get this - they supposedly have no visibility of seeing pending or received wires. So in other words, you won't know if they've received it until the very end of the day. The guy was short with answers (I was transferred twice to the "appropriate" person), and had zero care. I'll be finishing up my business with RCU. How unfortunate as they are giving credit unions a bad rep (I formerly was loyal to CU because of their personable service). read more

Very helpful and great service folks that work here. Same as the other branch in San Rafael that I go to as well. But most of the time, I call into the HQ in Santa Rosa and things get done super fast as well and very nice people on the phone. RCU has the best loan rates and if you have an EV, there 0.25% lower. I have transferred two Tesla loans at 2.49% to RCU in the past, took a few days digital signing and some emails, done. Couldn't be happier. The user interface of RCU's website is easy and basic. It is very straight forward to check your balances, confirm auto payments and make adjustments anytime. My last Tesla loan was with Wells Fargo, their website is hard to navigate and need to make sure your checking number is correct for auto loan payment because it doesn't confirm and then when it's time they use the wrong account number but takes 3 days to realize and then tell you it's past due but it's not past due late on your credit report unless over 30 days. Can't trust them. And their rates are high. I've had 3 loans with RCU very happy, just 2 now. If you're not buying a car brand that has 0% financing, consider RCU when buying a used car or buying off a lease, probably better rates than the car brand's rates or the dealer may use RCU already as one financial institution to get you a loan. But I think if you just use RCU from the beginning then dealer doesn't need to run your credit for 1 or 2 other banks, which lowers your credit score. You should live/work in Marin I believe. read more

I was constantly told to use mobile app any time I came into the branch. When my family went through a huge financial strain due to a death in the family, they refused to work with us and shut down my access to my bank account multiple times. Even though they were able to see my account balance was often well under $900 for months. They would have rather me paid off my credit balance than feed my family. They are just another greedy bank. Finally when I was able to get a better loan with nearly 0% interest to pay them back in full, they would claim fraudulent activity and shut down my debit card without even contacting me. I just can't bank with someone who thinks me paying my credit off is more important than feeding my family. read more

I got fed up w big name banks treating me like a number. At first Union then Citi where decent; however, Citi bank has been closing their branches left and right, so I ended up at their San Rafael Branch and the cashier was outright rude to me due too the long lines and being over worked. OK fine..move on...Closed out my Citi account and headed over to RCU. My XGF from nursing school who has a CPA always spoke highly of them. Chris open up my account informed me about their Auto and renters insurance, so I met w Micheal, save 500 bucks a year on my GT 2019 Mustang and 50% on my renters insurance. David and Brain help me retain a personal loan @ 13% to pay off my Credit Card debt @ 30%. 17 % savings. What I like best is RCU staff treats me like a human being NOT a number. Fpund this to be a wonderful location. Quick and easy to access whike I was passing through Marin County. Thankfully good ol trusty Yelp and the help of Electra's navigation, I managed to get here smoothly and efficiently. This location is also kind enough to offer a lovely coffee table. Among these behemoths of Wall St is this little beacon of hope that stands like a proud Redwood called Redwood Credit Union. Although I'm member of another credit union, RCU has helped me with deposits and withdrawal, all fee-free (thanks to CU logo on their ATM). Their ATM does not require checks to be be stuffed in an envelope, and you wanna withdraw $25? you can do it here besides the traditional multiples of $20. Hey Novato! Claim your downtown back! You don't need these "big banks" whose true customers are sovereign and hedge funds and not you. Replace them with restaurants, coffee shops, more credit unions and kid-friendly spaces. Great company and place to bank with. Very helpful staff, got me everything I needed to shut the door on the big for profit banks I used to bank with (in my case Chase). I have higher credit limits, lower interests rates, a great car loan and more! I will never go back to the likes of Wells Fargo, Chase, Citi, BoA if I don't have to, as Redwood and their network of credit unions does everything I need. The benefit of being able to use the ATMs at any 7/11 is a great feature and you don't get charged any fees from ATM use like everyone else using them. I have had accounts with Redwood Credit Union for several years, so it came as a shock when they refused to cash a small CA tax refund check signed over to me from my son. They agreed that the state of California would be good for the money, but said If he does not have an account here, he must personally come in during business hours to verify this. I explained that he worked two jobs, one in the east bay and one in southern Marin, and their requirement would take time away from his work. Could I provide a copy of his signature? No they replied. Could you hold the check until they cleared? No, they replied. Well that does not make any sense since if the checks clear, all would be well. Business relationships are based on trust. If, after years as your customer, you do not trust me enough to say that my own son signed these checks to me, you are implying that I am lying. If that is how you treat your customers, why should I do business with you? read more

Carla, from the wire transfer department told me the time to expect a wire transfer is not able to be determined. I asked if could take 40, 50 or 60 days. She said "yes". I have been getting wire transfers and previously the time was 3 days. I understand that the time may have increased several days but a wire transfer requiring 40-60 days is a little ludicrous. I don't have an account here, but I came in here to settle some bank business for a friend of mine. The first person I talked to was very friendly, but there was a lot of personal "chit chat" going on in the bank that was very unprofessional. An employee was talking about taking time off for a kid's ball game, another employee was talking about visiting some small baby and another employee was making comments about "that's what happens when you get old". All of these conversations were made across the bank from one workstation to another. I didn't appreciate the unprofessionalism while I waited for my transaction to be completed. read more

I feel like this bank is losing it's small business charm. I went in a couple days ago to talk about a small loan, there wasn't anyone at their desk so I asked the teller if someone could help me, she said, please sit down and someone will be with you. I waited 20 minutes and no one ever came over, nor did the teller, who was only 15 feet away ever check on me to see how I was doing, FRUSTRATING, especially since during the 20 minutes I waited only 4 customers came into the bank.
