Arrived promptly early Monday. They were well informed, knew what they were doing, had all the right gear and were pretty quick and cordial.

In our new home we had two heat pumps which did not operate well. Called them and the owner, Skip, scheduled an appointment to have them repaired. The technician, Josh, came out to investigate. After a few hours, he indicated that the drain lines were clogged with some odd orange liquid and needed to be vented, as well as replaced so they would drain correctly. This was an all-day repair that cost us quite a hefty amount, but he did a good job in replacing the line and making sure they were correctly draining the units. He indicated that he cleaned all the units and they were working correctly. Next day, the units still failed to operate correctly. Called Skip and indicated as much, and also said that the units were not cleaned at all, as I opened them and had to vacuum a lot of built up dust and debris. Instead of apologizing and scheduling Josh to come by and re-examine what was going wrong, he told me that Josh had cleaned everything like he said and that I was calling his technician a liar. Needless to say, I was speechless that the conversation had escalated instantly to that response. Skip proceeded to double down on bad customer service by saying that Josh was on the phone for hours on hold trying to speak to technical support at Fujitsu to figure out how to diagnose the problem, and couldn't get a hold of anyone. "So obviously the problem wasn't fixed," I said, and Skip came up with every excuse instead of offering to fix the original issue we called about-- two non-functional units. Bottom line, they don't guarantee their work. Called another service and had a technician out yesterday, who opened up the units by unscrewing them entirely, and called me over. He pointed out how there was no way these were cleaned since they were filled with dust and debris, and also pointed out rusted coils in both. He surmised that a leak had formed, and rusted the coils, which prevented full pressurization of the system, and the rust was the orange liquid that was in the lines. I asked him if this was difficult to diagnose and he said no-- you just had to open them up and you could see right away what the issue was. He indicated the replacement parts were easily sourced and wouldn't take long to repair. I asked him if he called Fujitsu tech support, he said there was no need, the problem was obvious. I indicated that the previous tech was on hold for hours and maybe that's why he didn't diagnose the system properly. This tech said there are other phone numbers that take you to the right department and it should only take five minutes, but this repair was obvious and shouldn't need a call-- you just needed to actually open the units up to see for yourself. I was charged a huge amount for the work. I'd give 1 star, but Jost did a good job on clearing the line and putting in new drain hoses, so he himself gets one star. But despite spending so much money, the original issue wasn't fixed, so what's the point? Go to a mechanic to get your car serviced for an engine that won't start, and walk away with four new tires but your engine still won't start, don't immediately start attacking the customer by calling them a liar as the first sentence out of your mouth. read more

These guys charged my mom over $850 to do basic maintenance on her HVAC. After they were NO SHOW/ NO CALL TWICE the week before. Additionally, they didn't have a filter on them so they charged her $200 an hour to go to Lowe's and buy one. Obviously we'll be going with someone else next year. read more

Reed Mechanical was recommended to me on the Southington Talks Facebook page when I had an issue with my gas boiler. Skip, the owner, came out to our home in Southington and fixed the issue quickly and without a problem. Fast-forward to this year. We moved to a nearby town and have been using Reed Mechanical at our new house for heating and A/C maintenance for the last few months. Skip sent out different people for these jobs, and they are not as experienced or knowledgeable as him. For issues with both the heat and A/C, the technicians had to call Skip who would try to help them over the phone. Twice, (once for heat, once for A/C), they had to come back the next day to fix something that they did not notice on the first visit. On both of these instances, I was charged for two days of work. I shared this concern with Skip who told me that he didn't want me to be unhappy, but, ultimately, did nothing to resolve the issue. read more

He gave me great helpful tips that saved me a ton in repair cost since I was able to do some of the work myself (being relatively handy). It was Friday night, after business hours, when I realized my heat was not on. I called Reed Mechanical based on the Facebook and Yelp reviews, and left a message. Skip returned my call within 10 minutes, even though he was out with his family. He actually talked me through troubleshooting my problem and I was able to fix it myself, saving me hundreds of dollars. Every single one of them was grossly over rated and over priced. HVAC people who you can trust and who are reliable are a rare breed these days. He does what he says, he sets your expectations and then he meets or exceeds them. His prices were MORE than reasonable and he put a new system in for considerably less than the lowest quote we got from the other 5 companies. Having bought a home that had electric strip heaters and cost us $700-$800 a month in the winter, the highly efficient system Reed put in for us is already saving us a ton of money and it's only October. Skip the owner responded to my call at 7pm on a Sunday night after I had informed him that my unit was leaking water under my hardwood floors. He was extremely responsive and was able to stop in the next morning at 8am to diagnose the issue, repair, then verify everything was running correctly. Skip was extremely pleasant to talk to and was in no rush to get out the door (even after the temperatures were (100+ over the weekend and was fixing units Saturday and Sunday until 7pm.) He even took a few dimensions of my ducts and now I will be looking into adding a second zone into the second floor of my condo. Overall, a great experience, extremely responsive and respectful. I contacted 4 companies in the Meriden/Southington area when my 48 year old central air finally gave up the ghost. As I was hosting a family get-together in two weeks and it was in the dog days of summer, I needed someone who I trusted, who could do the job quickly, and who would not cost me half the ranch. Reed Mechanical filled those requirements. Everyone was busy--one company couldn't get me a quote fast enough and one company honestly said they were too jammed up. I got a quote from Reed that was very much lower than the other quote I received and the other quote was for a unit 1/2 ton smaller, which I don't believe was the right size. Reed offered several options and prices, but he recommended the lowest cost one and I agreed with him. He scheduled the work quickly (I only begged a little) and his crew arrived on time and did a terrific job in one day. The duct-work was especially challenging in this old system but they did what they had to do. I understand that the duct-work was a sub-contract and I don't know who they were but they did a great job. I'm familiar with some other installations that a few of my friends & relatives had done recently, by other contractors, and I believe I got the best deal.
