I'm a touch belated in my review, but I'd be remiss to skip over it entirely. I had such a wonderful visit to Refucilo before a friend's wedding this past fall. On a whim, I decided to walk back to the hotel from some sights in the Mexican War Streets neighborhood. As I passed by this boisterous street, I looked up, saw the wine bar, paused, and walked in without a second thought. I easily grabbed a seat at the bar and the folks working were so nice and friendly! I was there solo and they didn't treat me any differently than larger groups, which I so appreciated. I tried the rose and loved it so much that I bought a bottle to go. Brought it back home and indulged! If I'm ever in Pittsburgh again (which I will be), I know I'll be stopping back here. read more

We were on our way to a Steelers preseason game when we passed by Refucilo Winery, a place we hadn't visited in a while. On a whim, I suggested we stop in. As we walked in, the staff mentioned that they rarely see Steelers fans come by before a game. I joked that we're a bit classic and prefer wine over beer. The visit started with a fascinating story I already knew. The owners have a winery in Mendoza, Argentina--a spot on our travel wish list. They own 5 acres of vineyards where they make and bottle the wine, then ship it to Pittsburgh. The owner, who happens to be a doctor in Pittsburgh, chose this location to bring a taste of Argentina to the North Side of the city. Everyone was incredibly welcoming. I opted for a glass of Malbec and asked which vintage was better. The server said both were excellent, so I chose the 2015. It had notes of blackberry, cherry, currant, plum, and raspberry, but the most intriguing aroma was a hint of something meaty. My wife went with the Sauvignon Blanc, which she enjoyed; it had lovely lemon-lime aromas, citrus notes, and a creamy finish. As we were sitting, the staff, including the owner, Juan, came out to chat. We got a good laugh when he told me that the chef in the back thought I was Ben Roethlisberger. Juan was very friendly and recommended I try something special--a 2018 Malbec Reserve. It was delicious, with a lighter body and fruity notes of vanilla, raspberry, blueberry, and plum. I loved it and would have bought a bottle, but we were heading to the game. Juan also had my wife sample a wine that smelled sweet but was on the drier side, though I can't recall the name. We talked a bit more about the wines, and he mentioned that the 2018 Malbec requires a lot of rain and that they plant the vines up to three feet deep to make it work. This visit was an unexpected delight, and I'm eager to return. I'd love to sit down and pick Juan's brain on wine. We're so glad we decided to stop in and can't wait to go back soon. read more

Is it really an update if your score is still the same? I have to champion these people all day every day. Juan and Cecilia, their fried up front and everyone who works for them are the most genuine, kind, funny and knowledgeable people and the Tapas are always amazing. Everything comes out piping hot too. The one slight knock on them is that, on the food menu, they've gone back and forth on including how many empanadas or bacon wrapped dates, for example are in a serving and considering you order by serving, I feel like that's generally helpful knowledge. I cannot speak more highly of Refucilo Winery! It's such an intimate and lovely establishment. Juan absolutely makes the experience here. I attended an event hosted by the winery and a local foodie group over a year ago. My book club later hosted an event here and we enjoyed empanadas, stuffed mushrooms and so many yummy cheeses in addition to their wines. My husband is a little wine nerd so I decided this was the perfect spot for his 42nd birthday. We had the back room to ourselves, about 10-11 of us. Juan spoke to us about his winery telling his story and educating us on Refucilo's wines. It was such a intimate experience for our guests and my husband was over the moon about it. Even if you're in the neighborhood or making a special trip across town for a glass of wine and tapas, their service is always top notch. The tapas are delicious; especially the chicken empanadas and the flat bread. It's such a cozy setting on Western Ave. I look forward to date nights with my husband there after I have our baby girl! read more

Came here with a group of 6 and they were able to accommodate us by pushing two tables together. There's a good selection of wines by the glass, and tapas. On the tapas menu, "serving" = 1 piece. So come for snacks and a drink, but don't expect to get filled up. When we came on a Friday night they had live music going on outside, and some tables setup to watch it. I had no idea this quaint little winery on Western Ave existed but I'm so excited that it does! I visited Refucilo on a Friday evening and sat on the back patio, it was fairly busy but my friend and I were able to get a table right away. The owners and staff were so sweet and attentive, stopping by our table a few times to see how we liked everything! We tried a few different red wines and appetizers and they were all delicious! The apps/tapas were also really affordable compared to other wineries I've eaten at as well. We didn't get a flatbread but overheard a man at the table next to us saying that he would pay double the cost of the prosciutto flatbread to eat it again, it was that good!! What a little gem Refucilo is. They're located on the North Side but their vineyard is in Mendoza's Uco Valley, surrounded by the Andes Mountains. I tried a flight of their thoughtfully crafted Argentinian wines and especially enjoyed the fruity 2017 Pinot Noir and single vineyard Malbec, one of the varieties this region is most known for. I proceeded to order full glasses of those, and take a bottle of the Pinot home with me. Refucilo has a fantastic tapas menu headlined by their delectable housemade empanadas. I had a few of these! I also had a stuffed mushroom with peppers and onions, and a cherry crumble dessert. Also at our table were flatbreads, hummus...lots of vegetarian options, which I appreciated. There's a bar seating area and a couple of more private seating areas you can call to reserve if you're coming in with a group. There is an outdoor patio for nice weather, too, and they host live entertainment there. Really nice people here, and they are turning out some excellent wine. read more

We were pleasantly surprised at the space this winery offers. They have a very nice bar setup with a smaller back room that seems very private. Then we chose to sat on the patio which was a hidden gem in the back. There are 5 or 6 tables with some seasonal flowers planted at the edge of the patio. The wine selection is great and the server went through and explained the varietals and options of wines. They have a small plate menu and while we were there, featured the smoked salmon flatbread that was delicious. We will definitely be going back! read more

I love everything about this quaint little winery on the Northside. Juan, Cecilia, Robert, and Christian are so knowledgeable, and make you feel so welcome. I discovered this winery when I went for their grand opening a few years ago. They own a winery in the Uco Valley in Argentina, and sell the wines in this tasting room in Pittsburgh. The Grand Reserve and Malbec are my favorites. They have mostly dry wines and offer flights, glasses, and bottles. I have stopped in several times since the grand opening and I am definitely a fan! They serve amazing homemade empanadas too! The cheese empanada with a glass of Malbec is perfect! They have other snacks like cheese plates, flatbreads, stuffed dates, and more. When the weather is warm there is a nice sized covered patio in the back. Sometimes they have live music and salsa dancing. Try this place out for a taste of Argentina in Pittsburgh. read more

Had the absolute best time at Refucilo Winery! During our visit we tasted three delicious wines. Torrontes was my absolute favorite - perfect for white wine lovers. We also tasted three of their AMAZING empanadas! I wouldn't normally order and empanada at a restaurant & ever since I've been here I've been craving them! Not only is the wine amazing, the tapas food is perfect to pair with! The wines were very affordable and an Argentina wine. I can't remember the last time I drank Argentina wine. The owners (Juan and his wife) were the sweetest and most hospitable people. You can tell they really care for their wine. The also have an outdoor area where they often have live music! During my visit I joined the Wine Club and counting down until we go again! This is a must go! So happy to have them in the burgh! read more

What a hidden little gem! This place is only about a month old, but my fiancé and I immediately fell in love with its rustic decor and friendly staff. The owners are husband and wife from the Dominican, but they have a plot of land in Argentina where they grow their grapes. All of their wine is shipped in directly from their vineyard, which definitely makes it stand out. When we went, they only had 3 wines, so we decided to do a wine flight to try them all. My favorite was the Chardonnay, but my fiancé preferred the Malbec. They had an extensive tapas menu so we decided to order a chorizo stuffed mushroom, hummus with pita chips, and an empanada. Everything (other than the hummus) is homemade. All three of our tapas were delicious- if we weren't planning to go to dinner afterward I definitely would have tried more! We had a wonderful conversation with the female owner who showed us lovely pictures of their vineyard in Argentina. She informed us that they would be receiving another shipment of wine in mid-March which will include a rose Malbec and a few new additions. Refucilo is a good place for a relaxing night. We went on Saturday when they had to seatings with a guitar playing on the patio. Service was good. Our waiter was pleasant and did a good job and he did have some assistance since everyone arrived at the same time for the evening. The wines come from their winery in Argentina and there is a nice variety. Most at our table did a tasting of 3 wines while other tables just ordered a bottle. I tried a couple of the red wines and the Cabernet Sauvignon was good but the Malbec was my favorite. Had to take a bottle home too. Our table had a couple of the food options. The charcuterie was very good and came with 3 meats, some olives, mozzarella. The meats were very good and went well with most of the wines. We also had the bacon wrapped dates. Refucilo has an atmosphere all its own! Intimate, classy, friendly, relaxed,---just some words that could describe this small winery on the North Side. And it's different---I'd recommend checking out their website before you go. It's very interesting and informative, not only to learn more about how they started and where their wines come from, but also to get their hours, which are rather limited. Only open Thursday and Friday evenings, and Saturday from 2:00 till 10:00, it is worth making a trip to this little stretch of Western Ave. when they are open. The space is charming---low-key and attractive---and the employees are so nice and helpful. There is one gentleman whose name I keep forgetting to ask, and he is great. He tells interesting stories, knows a lot about the wines, and is very efficient---there when you need him, but also letting you enjoy your visit without being intrusive. The owner is a lovely man as well. I prefer white wine and the sparkling wines, and have tasted most of theirs. My favorites are the Torrantes, and the sparking Pinot, as well as the sparkling Malbec Rosè. The wine list is not huge, but there is something that everyone will like. If you want to buy a bottle, the prices are reasonable. We've mostly sat at the table by the front window or at the bar, but the back patio is very nice. I haven't had the tapas recently, but enjoyed the empanadas about a year ago. They are indeed tapa portions, so be aware that you will be getting a smaller appetizer size rather than a meal. They also have charcuterie and cheese platters that would be good to share. A friend visited when they had a wonderful musician playing, and really enjoyed the evening. If you get on their mailing list, you can be notified of their frequent events. I would definitely recommend Refucilo, and am looking forward to visiting again. read more

Really enjoyed our first visit to this winery. Arrived shortly after their 5pm opening on a Friday evening and grabbed the table in front at the window which was a nice spot. Our group of three each had a couple glasses of various wines. Highly recommend the Single Vineyard Malbec and Torrontes. We also had a charcuterie board and some cheese empanadas to munch on. I like when wineries have this option so you are able to try a few and decide what you like best. We also got empanadas, which were delicious and flavorful. Would rate 10 stars if I could! This place is such a gem. Visited earlier this month with friends, and it was a first time visit for all of us. We were greeted by one of the owners, who graciously shared information about the winery, wines, and menu. At her recommendation we each ordered a flight of wine. Between the four of us we tried most reds on the menu, with our two favorites being the Single Vineyard Malbec 2017 and the Grand Reserve Cabernet Franc. However - all wines were delicious and you can't go wrong with any that you choose! From the Tapas menu we tried the HOMEMADE Empanadas, Seasonal Flatbread, Charcuterie Board, and Cheese Platter. Everything was absolutely delicious. Our favorite were the Cheese Empanadas - they were to die for! The inside is small so if you have a group of 4 I would recommend making a reservation. They do have a nice outdoor patio that will be opening in the warmer months with live entertainment. We can't wait to go back! read more

My girlfriend and I came here last night and absolutely loved it. I decided to get their Gran Reserve Flight where I was able to pick 3 wines from their Gran Reserve list. All of them were amazing and it was only $11 for the flight. My favorite was the single vineyard Malbec. It was so good I bought a bottle. My girlfriend loves red wine but her favorite was the Torrantes, which is white. We also bought a bottle of that before leaving. On top of the great wine, their Charcuterie plate was huge and was only $12. I'm used to paying double and getting half the meats. They also give a side of Mozzarella, Olives, and Pickles with the Charcuterie plate. We also got the Hummus and Chips which were fantastic. To top it off, the service was spectacular. The owner and two bartenders were a blast and very knowledgeable. We definitely plan on returning in the near future. read more

Do not miss this place!!! The staff and owners treat you like gold and their wines are even better. They have a great selection of wines made from grapes from their own vineyard in Argentina. There are red, white and rose choices- each unique and very satisfying. They also have tapas which they pair with their wines. We had pita chips and a yummy garlicky hummus. We started with a flight of wine and genuinely liked all three wines we ordered. There is a standing bar, a small dining room and a nice patio in back. The staff was eager to share the history of their wine and business and very knowledgeable about their wine. They are also friendly and we're excited to get to know us. I do love all of this little gem. We were there as part of my weekly Thursday happy hour and I do love when we do a wine location. Decor: It's quaint and quiet, a neat wine bar and retail counter in the first room, small nooks with tables to sit inside and then an incredibly quiet and intimate outdoor back patio with about four tables and chairs. Great to sneak away for a casual intimate get together with a girlfriend or two. Selection: there are about eight different styles offered by the winery as well as two flights of three glasses each (One red, one white). You must start this way to find your favorite! (which for the group as a whole was the Malbec, for me was the Chardonnay.) Fantastic pricing for the quality. Service: I do not think they were expecting or appreciating as large of a group as we were and took them off guard. If you are doing an Event here, I would make sure to give them a heads up before you stuff up the Patio. So there was as much accommodation as possible. If you are there with just a friend or two it'll be a much easier and swifter experience with fewer glasses on the tables. However, very friendly servicing persons. Food: I did not eat myself, but I was told good things of the small bites. They ARE nibbles, don't go in with a Pittsburgh-sized appetite. That is NOT the goal here, for that visit the bars across the way. But delicious. All in all, super quaint gem and it'll probably be better when I go back next time with fewer people. read more
