We went to the Cellar on a Saturday afternoon and we had the place to ourselves for a bit. By the time we left the Cellar was filling up. We each had the flights of wine and each of us chose different wines depending on our preferences. 8 glasses later, I recommend food to absorb some the alcohol as some are quite strong for wine. We really enjoyed the afternoon there and plan on taking our friends to share the experience. I would make reservations if you are going more traditional time during the day or weekend. read more

I had no idea this place did brunch/breakfast! We were walking around the Strip on Saturday morning and stumbled by this spot. They said they have good brunch- we gave them a chance. Great food!! We had a really nice breakfast, great service, kind employees. I had an excellent loaded bloody mary- and I've tried a lot of bloody marys around the burgh- theirs is a good one!! We went here for a Saturday morning brunch. To our surprise it was not crowded at all. Being that Kelly O's and another diner always have lines to get in, we were shocked nobody was here. We had a great time having mimosa and wine flights and the multiple people who took care of us were so kind and sociable. When we ordered, we got advice about the food. We were told we ordered two favorites and they were absolutely right because the sausage hash and the funnel cake French toast were delicious!! The price was extremely reasonable and it was a nice, chill vibe for a early Saturday afternoon. We will definitely be coming back. One of the people who waited on us also convinced us to buy a bottle of the moscato, which he promises is one of the best so we will have to find out when we open the bottle:) read more

I just flew in to work for the week and was walking around looking for a bite to eat when I found Olivia outside highlighting their wines. I tried a few of their white wines and enjoyed their Unoaked Chardonnay and Fume Blanc. I don't know if it was just the hot day there, but I took home those two wines. I asked where I could grab a bite, and she recommended going downstairs to R Wine. Their small bites were what I was looking for. The atmosphere was great and reminded me of old Italy. I met a friendly bartender/waiter named Jeffery at the bar and was taken care of. I got the meatballs, and they were tasty. The meatballs had flavor, and the red sauce was perfect. What a fortuitous find! A couple friends bumped into each other after the Sunday opera matinee and decided to wander in The Strip. On Penn Avenue someone noticed the sidewalk seating for R Wine Cellar, so we decided to go inside to investigate. Downstairs was a beautifully woodpaneled room playing decidedly modern music. We mostly had the place to ourselves (I felt safer even though cases are coming down), along with an enthusiastic waitress. They produce all their own wines on Smallman Street from domestic and imported grapes, and the kitchen has it going on as well. After sampling their warm mulled wine (both white and red), I opted for the white; it really does remind you of apple pie. The Church wine is better than anything you've been served for Communion. There are also 2 beers and a selection of soda for non-wine drinkers. We enjoyed the French onion soup, meat ravioli, cheese board (with nuts, berries, and orange marmalade), and crostini with warm cheese spread so much that we plan to come back for their wine flight tasting. Not only can they schedule one at any time, but it's only $35 per person. I can't speak to the restrooms, but I hope to write about their sidewalk service next time! read more

We parked our bikes and decided to stop in to take a closer look and found they had a ton of wine selections. What a pleasant surprise it was to happen upon this spot while walking down the strip. Go downstairs and the "cellar" awaits you. We sat ourselves and were immediately tended to. Per PA State Law you are required to order food with alcoholic beverage. We were not planning to eat but were surely happy we did. All of their food is prepared in house. The caprese bruschetta was absolutely delicious! Very fresh and garlicy (which I LOVE!) We did the red flight and white flight to share, so we could get a taste of their offerings. The white offerings included the unoaked Chardonnay, Oaked Chardonnay, Fumé Blanc, & the Pinot Grigio. All were delicious and I would call them "crowd pleasers." The red offerings for us were the highlight and exceptional. They included the Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, & the Sangiovese. We absolutely loved the Carmenere & Sangiovese and bought a bottle of each. The Carmenere is aged in whiskey barrels from a local distillery and in my opinion is their best of the 8 wines I tried. The service was excellent and their wines are excellent. A MUST try while meandering the strip district. read more

Fiona Peach Chardonnay - My favorite R Cellar wine that I tasted was a fresh and fruity wine with hints of peach and apricot. The fruit creates the sweet, and the Chardonnay adds a and crisp finish. Firstly, the wine here is amazing. I buy it regularly and will continue to. BUT- the restaurant is TERRIBLY MANAGED. Only ONE chef on a Sunday at prime brunch hour. He was clearly struggling to keep up. We watched a party of about 20 getting meals at all different times. People in the party were done eating looooooong before other orders were ready. Another party walked out after about 45 minutes. We continued to wait, thinking that it would get better. The waitress did not even come back even ONE TIME to refill coffees or waters. Saw her gabbing with the manager in the corner the whole time- almost like she was avoiding us bc the food was taking so long. After 1.5 hours, we finally got the manager's attention and asked how much longer it was going to be- stores in the strip were closing! He said 5 minutes. After 20, we got 2/5 plates and a side of fruit. At that point, we cancelled the rest of our order. They hadn't even started on the simple egg and toast I ordered and had barely thrown the chicken in the fryer for my partner. We were patient and gracious, but we were approaching 2 full hours. While we waited for the check, we saw the chicken finish. The manager came by with excuses and apologies. Of course, my partner was still hungry and that was his order so we asked if we could have it to go. Manager rudely asked if we want him to charge us for it as he had already removed it from the bill... Cherry on top of a terrible experience. Would rate this restaurant ZERO stars if the wine wasn't so great. Just buy it from the stall outside and avoid all this drama. read more

We had a delightful Friday evening, tasting several different wines in a warm and cozy environment. The service was amazing and the gentleman who explained the wines to us was fabulous. My girlfriend discovered and planned a wine tasting for four of us here at R Wine Cellar and we had such an awesome time! Do note that if you were a Casa Reyna fan - which was in this location but closed a couple years ago - you will feel transported back in time as the decor hasn't changed a bit. However, disregard that time capsule moment and pretend that you're in a wine cellar instead! First of all, our host/wine connoisseur was a lot of fun! I wish that I remembered his name but know that he had a laidback demeanor, was very friendly, and even stayed a half hour or so after his shift was over to finish serving our table. We all gave him an A+! Will this be the best charcuterie and wine you've ever tasted? No, but the value for $30 can't be beat. Our light appetizers kept us full and from getting too intoxicated while we tried 8 different wines. I'm usually a white wine fan, but the reds won here, with the Carménère and the Sangiovese being the table's favorites. We all left a bit tipsy with a bottle of one or the other. I introduced this winery to my girlfriends and we last visited it for a wine tasting. They have a private room/ space in the back. We had a blast. They all fell in love with the wine. I have previously ordered custom labeled wine for my college graduation party, and thought this time around it would be a thoughtful gift for a girlfriends birthday. We walked over here after breakfast on a Friday. This is a little store front winery where they make the wine inside. I assume the wine making equipment takes up most of the space, so the tasting area was small. Because it was a work day, the woman was very talkative and took her time explaining all the wines to us. She was the sister of the owner of the winery. The whole family works and runs the business which is great. I really like some of their unique flavors of wines. They had a chardonnay warmed that tasted like Christmas. It was really good. I have never had wine warmed like that. She said they make it with diamond grapes and it crystallizes at the bottom. They also had a red version of it that tasted equally amazing. Another wine was the concord, that tasted just like grape juice. Very smooth. We ended up buying 5 bottles of wine. They have specials for $3 off 3 bottles and $6 off 6 bottles. I really like this winery, and I will be back the next time I visit my hometown of Pittsburgh. read more

The Fiona Chardonnay has hints of peach and apricot and fruitier and a little on the sweet side. Very interesting wine. the unoaked chardonnay was very nice with hints of pear. The American Cabernet is a little acidic but would go well with a steak. The grapes for the wines come from California, or Pennsylvania or Chile. I've never been a fan of wine. I just don't have a taste for it. This place was so cute and family owned. The first bottle we bought was named for the youngest girl in the family, Fiona Chardonnay. It was sweet with peach undertones. Amazing! I was so pleasantly surprised. The second bottle we bought was the Glühwein. It's served warm and it is Christmas in a glass. It tastes a little like spiced apple wine. I don't know if that's a thing but that's how I have to describe it. This is a bare bones tasting room, although it's the wine that counts. R Wine Cellar gives 4 free tastes of any of their 8-10 selections. The pours are served in tiny plastic cups, like those in which cold medication, such as Nyquil or liquid Tylenol, are administered. Forget about color, nose, and swirling. Our sommelier didn't offer much info about his wines. Still, we did get a few extra complimentary pours, the wine was drinkable, and the price ($15-20 per bottle) was right. read more

She offered us some samples so we headed inside. They make their wine there... right there. the barrels are right at the entrance. We sampled a few--- cabernet, blush, moscato, Fiona (peach... delicious) and an apple spice one that is served warm. They can put custom pictures on the bottles. As a business, if you want to attract me as a repeat customer, you need to do two things, and do them well: (1) Provide a high-quality product; (2) Provide outstanding customer service. Many businesses provide a quality product, but relatively few businesses provide excellent customer service, so customer service in large part drives my repeat purchasing decisions. R Wine Cellar provided me with sterling customer service in a way that few other places have--or would. Read on for details. Having visited the other winery in the Strip District earlier this week, I decided to stop by yesterday to sample R's wines, since they had more of a variety and are more reasonably priced. I was particularly interested in the Gluhweins, since this is a very unique wine that few other wineries in the area produce, and appeals to my palate, esp. at this time of year. The folks at R provided me with samples of several other of their wines, including the Lake Erie red and white, and the unoaked chardonnay, in addition to the gluhweins. While I enjoyed the other wines, I was immediately drawn to the two varieties of gluhwein: the white (Mosel-style, Margaret), and the red. I very much enjoyed them both, but decided on a bottle of the Margaret white, since I was looking for a wine to bring home for my family to enjoy at Thanksgiving, and I thought its more subtle flavor would make for a good after-dinner drink. The owner was very friendly and explained the origin of the grapes, and the other woman working there also seemed quite knowledgeable about the wines, as well. I walked out the door satisfied with my purchase and looking forward to consuming the wine. Now, here's where the stellar customer service really comes into play. After partaking of some tacos and hot chocolate next door, I got on my bike to peddle home to Oakland, as I've done pretty much every time I've visited the Strip. After having cycled less than 5 blocks, tragedy struck: the wine bottle slipped through the bottom of the seemingly sturdy paper bag provided and shattered into a million pieces, spilling its contents all over the sidewalk of Liberty Ave.! Although I've often feared this happening, since I've cycled home with fragile items before, this is the first time that it's ever happened--and it didn't even happen when I went over a particularly rough section--just the middle of the sidewalk! After stopping, dazed and confused for a moment, I picked up the top of the bottle--the only part mostly intact--and decided to revisit the winery, to show the owner what had happened. When I showed it to him and told him what had happened, he provided me with another full bottle, free of charge! I would have paid for another one, but his generosity turned my upset into elation. After securing a plastic bag to cover the paper one and debating whether to wait up to an hour to catch the elusive 54C, after testing the integrity of the plastic bag, I mounted my bike again and cycled home to Oakland, this time with wine bottle intact. The owner's kindness in replacing my broken bottle of wine was an example of customer service that went above and beyond the call of duty. To pay it forward, I brought the wine to a gathering that I attended last night to share with some friends, and told them its story. They were all impressed, both by the quality of the wine and by the owner's generosity. I will return next weekend to pick up another bottle to bring home to share with my family, as originally intended, and I will no doubt be back before Christmas to get some of the red gluhwein, as well. Out of all the local wineries I have tried this is by far my favorite. I like many before me love the Glühwein. So much so that it's Christmas gifts for friend and relatives. About 18 bottles total. I would drink this year round every day if I could. Do I have to give Christmas gifts? The Fiona Peach Chardonnay is also great. It taste like a juicy peach that's been soaked in Chardonnay. I just love it. They also have lots of other options but I would try the 2 I mentioned first. I promise you won't regret it. I think it's time to go open a bottle. Cheers. read more
