Eskaton is a wonderful place. There is not enough space here to say why but I'll try... my mom is…read more79 and disabled due to a stroke but can do her own things except needs help with mobility, transportation, help if she were to fall. She lived in Merced with my dad (married 55 years) and he suddenly passed away. We had to hurriedly find her a senior residence closer to me or my sister with the 24 hour front desk, pull cord in the bathroom and pendant to wear around her neck to push a button for emergencies. Eskaton has all that and more! My sister also lives very close by so the location was perfect. Let's start with Joey, the first person I spoke to on the phone who runs the entrance area/front desk - he had no idea who I was or what we'd been through and he was just the friendliest kindest voice ever. He needed to transfer me to Latoya to inquire about apartments, but I already had a great feeling about it just because of how Joey treated me in that first interaction. Then Latoya was also extremely friendly, empathetic and more than happy to take the time to go over in detail how Eskaton works, which apts were available, pricing, and emailed me floor plans and the Eskaton calendars with meals and daily activities. She was glad to reserve the apt mom wanted even before we could get paperwork/deposit back to her, being out of town and at this time still dealing with my dad's passing, his service, packing to move...they both made a terrible situation into an exciting and welcoming new start. Tristin was next, helping to formalize paperwork and just the sweetest kindest person. They answered all my million questions and Latoya took a video and pictures of the apartment so mom could plan and feel more comfortable about the move. My mom LOVES it here. The place is classy and decor is beautiful. I'm jealous of her adorable apartment! The residents make a point to chat and say hello in the hallway, elevator, dining room. She loves all the activities - seated exercise classes, Ted talk viewings, live music, libraries on 2 floors. Most of all she feels very, very safe and welcomed. The food is delicious and we eat with my mom all the time. They also encourage (if people want to) to sit with others in the dining area. My mom right away started off with a nice group of women including her neighbor across the hall. She enjoys the social aspect of the meals. Often she is very busy with activities and doesn't have time to call us! Helen in the dining room is wonderfully sweet and so fun to talk to. She seats you and comes to every table to say hi and chat for a moment, which we love and I think for those who choose to eat solo it's nice to still interact. At Eskaton you're never really alone, there are friendly staff and residents everywhere. Toni in housekeeping is also friendly and kind and does an amazing job, my mom loves talking with her and seeing her weekly. My mom's apartment is always super clean and fresh thanks to Toni! Tom and Roberto who do all the repairs/hook up cable/hang pictures are so sweet and funny...my mom always talks about how they helped her decorate and they even put together a new walker for her so she didn't have to wait to use it! Recently, believe it or not, my sister actually started having stroke in their lobby!! My mom called it and yelled to Joey they needed an ambulance, he called right away and this is the whole entire reason my sister will make a full and fast recovery. The hospital said it's miracle-it is!! I want to also call out Matthew, Ellen, Daniel, Minayah, Arsel as just so sweet and wonderful. They have helped us out multiple times with literally everything. The building is super secure, the residents are watched over carefully, it's just perfect. I will also share that my mom has only been there 1.5 months and already this is our impression.

I left several messages for the…read morecoordinator over a couple months span asking if there was interest in my music students performing for the residents at Eskaton. (They have performed here before and it was a great success.) The coordinator never returns calls or messages. I never received word back, even after leaving my information and contact number and a voicemail several times (at the desk as well). It is really disappointing to not be acknowledged, have no communication whatsoever and a disappointment for my students not to have an opportunity to play at this time. The former director from last year was very prompt and welcoming.

My grandparents were at a different facility, where they did not receive baths on a weekly basis,…read moreas required by law. The other location also doubled medication and was dead inside (all the inhabitants were in their rooms...all the time!) Carlton Plaza was very accommodating. We toured the hotel-like setting and knew it was far better than the place my grandparents were currently residing. There is a library room, with computers and books and tables, an arts and crafts area space, a theater room, a billiard room, and nice restaurant style food with waiters (haven't had the food but it looks amazing). My grandparents were able to move in ONE day. That is how awesome this place is, they were able to make that happen for them. Besides the things for them to do, their personal apartment isn't so bad. The room has 12 ft ceilings. A little kitchen with a microwave, fridge and sink. There are blinds between the little living area and the little bedroom which makes it feel much more big. Nice size bathroom. Do I wish senior care places offered more space for older people who have a lot of nice things they want to be around? Yes. Do I think that we can make the space work at Carlton for my grandparents? Yes. The care, class, and quality that Carlton Plaza offers...its much better than some other places, and allows interaction, which couldn't have been if we had gotten them in-home care. I am very pleased and am recommending Carlton Plaza to anyone who cares to listen. I am even planning for when Im elderly...I want to live in a place like this! 12/22/16 Update: My grandparents have passed away since this review, but, I wanted to let everyone know that while the facility is very good some of their staff is not. My grandmother, in her final months had her purse stolen FROM HER ROOM. So please be aware that some of the assisted staff members they employ are not all good people. Please consider this when you move your family into this place. Either don't have assisted people in there, or make sure your grandparents valuables are put away when assisted people enter. Its not a great situation but it seems like theft will happen wherever you might go, and people prey on those that are elderly because they are easy targets. Just keep your eyes open.

But one your health begins to fail, you discover that services you need are extremely costly. $750 a month to be escorted to the dining room. If you need your blood pressure taken for a medicine, that's $800 a month. Need assistance to get dressed, shower, take meds, or pretty much anything, that's all extra. This why so many people leave Carlton as their need for assistance grows.

Upon moving in an incomplete apartment with repairs still pending months later we have only encountered excuses and rude not helpful behavior by the resident managers not only to ourselves but to others residents. The food as pictured below is typical of what the elderly are given. When inquired COVID blamed but the kitchen should have a protocol for healthy tasty food since we have been in a COVID world for over two years. We are sad and actually removed our mom immediately when he stayed with her for a night and realized people enter her home while she is sleeping or not in the house that is not cleaners. The housekeeping use the laundry rooms most week days and only allows the residents late night weekends to take care of their own needs. The cost of this complex is quite costly and I would really caution people about putting someone you love here.

It was great to get a drink, main course, and dessert. In addition the price is fantastic for visitors and if you just drop by they will still serve you even though they would prefer you to make reservations. Dining Area: It was very pleasant. It was like being at a restaurant. They have table cloths for lunch and put real linens on for dinner. Getting in and out is easy once you figure out the gate code and know to enter in afterhours the side door. Living here is a real learning curve for all. Residents: Some are more pleasant than others, but that's always the case with neighbors. Management: Just changed while we were in the process of helping my friend move in. Now they have open eating till 7pm. We haven't been here long enough to see all of the changes, especially since we just moved in. Rooms: Are like mini apartments. Living room, mini kitchen, bedroom, and private bathroom. The door has a door knocker that you can use if you are in the hallway. It really feels like an apartment. Inside there is a very nice balcony that looks out to the river.
