I love REI and I especially love this REI. My husband is the cause of my REI love. I'm not really an outdoorsy kinda gal but I married an outdoorsy kinda guy and I love him a lot so I now do outdoorsy stuff. This means I need gear for all of our adventures he takes me on and this is hands down the best place to get it. No matter what your adventure entails if it's happening outside REI will have hour gear. Not only will they have it they will have people working there that are super excited about being outside and will help you find the perfect equipment for your adventure and then will help ensure that it is fit perfectly to you. They legit have the best customer service at this location. I recently got a new pack and the guy there spent almost an hour making sure that it was fit perfectly to my body! Horrible customer service. I purchased several items at full price on Friday at noon. An hour later I received a notification that all purchases made during the weekend will be matched for the dividend. I went back on Saturday at 7 pm and spoke to customer service that I was not informed on Friday afternoon about promotion while in store. I asked if I could return my purchases and repurchase items. The "customer service lady" said no because she would refuse to let me repurchase my items and walked off while I was speaking to her. Once upon a time, Cory O. was in shape. And during this forgotten era, she used to need equipment that served to keep her in shape. This included all sorts of fun things like shoes, carabiners , rope, canteens, flashlights, and camping gear. Yes, those were the good old days. It was a simpler time. Now, I go into REI and look at all the things that I wished I could even pretend to need. But alas, I still have my harness and climbing shoes that are in near perfect condition (minus the dust) that have not been used in three years. And what about my vast collection of Nalgene bottles hidden in parts of my closet? Carabiners that now serve as key rings? Hordes of tennis shoes that have gone unworn? I love to spend money at REI (especially their outlet store online) and they always take care of me with their great selection. Most of the time you'll encounter great customer service here, but once in a while you'll get the kid who has never used any of the equipment he's selling. REI is definitely the place to go for high-quality outdoor and adventure gear. My husband and myself are quite adventurous, but we are also on a budget. REI generally does not meet that 'budget-friendly' requirement, but on occasion, you'll get some great deals. Dario was our sales associate and he was very helpful and didn't pressure us to buy anything we weren't interested in or anything out of our budget. He let us browse and make decisions without intruding. The store is just so FUN and COOL that you get in the mood where you want to buy everything you see, but you've gotta keep your head about you or you'll end up broke. First, check out the REI website (where the prices are always the same as in store and the online inventory tool is incredibly accurate) and then cross-reference Google and Amazon for cheaper prices on the same gear. After my research, we bought our lightweight 2-person Kelty tent from REI for a sale price of $79.99. A price so good that even the sales associates were impressed. We were asked about the membership, but I didn't bite. We are happy with our tent, and it meets all the immediate requirements for our adventures: it's is easy to put up, sleeps 2+ Bailey the beagle, lightweight enough for a short backpacking trip, has a mesh top for stargazing, and compresses small enough to shove in a kayak bow. We tested out some other gear in store such as sleeping pads, but couldn't justify the cost of these overpriced inflatable pool floaties. We found a similar non-name brand option for the half the cost from, GASP, Walmart. You'll also see preposterous mark-up on standard gear like Coleman mini-propane tanks for camp stoves. REI price: $7.99. Academy price: $2.99. Overall: REI is a great store with good service and great products, most that I can find cheaper elsewhere. But if you've got the cash to burn, it sure would be fun to burn it here. read more

I give this place 4 stars because it's a little impersonal. I actually prefer Whole Earth Provision Company in San Antonio or Austin, but REI isn't bad, particularly in Houston. One of my fashion sensibilities is what I call "outdoor chic." These may seem to be incompatible concepts, but I really do think that some of the outdoor clothing is pretty cool. I'm a big fan of walking out of the house in a cozy fleece vest, some Chaco sandals strapped to my feet, a Timbuk2 messanger bag across my chest, carrying a bike on my shoulder. REI is a great place to outfit this sort of lifestyle. Full disclosure: I don't get to do many of the outdoor activities that I once couldn't live without. Grad school will do that to you. REI is a large chain store that just happens to be run like a co-op, which means they engage in profit sharing and co-op member input. In fact, every year I receive a ballot in the mail to vote for the new co-op president, along with my banging refund check that I get because I'm a co-op member. You become a member by paying a one-time fee of I think $25 and as a result you get about 10% back on all of your purchases. I think it's a pretty good deal, and around March, when I get my dividend, I always go on an on-line REI splurge. As a member you also get to attend their "garage sale" where they sell used gear at cheap prices. The staff can be a little uppity, even when they don't know what they're talking about. But overall, I appreciate what REI does. The Verdict: Come for the Dividend, leave with a new Nalgene bottle that you didn't need. read more

To preface my review: I have never bought anything from REI. I have come to REI on two separate occasions, looking for running, biking, and swimming gear (some may know it as triathlon gear). REI is a beautiful store- the outside is stunning, and walking inside is like opening a treasure chest full of wonderful, expensive, fun outdoorsy things. So why haven't I bought anything? The answer is simple: I have questions, and there is never anyone who will help me. Sure, there are a few sales associates walking around on the floor, but they're either busy with another customer, or their "on their lunch break", or they "don't cover that section"... it really does get old. I feel like I have to stand there and scream "PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY!!!" to get any attention, and even then I barely get a nod in my direction. I am also not a fan of their membership program. You pay a fee for a membership, and at the end of a year you get a "rebate" of a certain percentage on you total annual spend. I don't want to play games, I'd like to have my discount up front when I'm purchasing the (most likely expensive) gear, rather than wait a year for a rebate check. REI also doesn't have a good selection of tri gear. There's a small selection of tri separates, maybe one tri suit to choose from (and in one size!), and minimal swim gear. The running shoes and biking selections are better, but again, getting someone to help you pick out a bike or shoes can be a time-consuming undertaking. I've always ended up going down the street to Sun & Ski Sports, which isn't quite as fancy, isn't nearly as fun, but the service is great and the prices are cheap. I would love to shop at REI, but if I'm not getting the attention I desire and my questions answered, it's not worth it to pay more for the items that I can get at a variety of other stores around Houston. read more

I bought a membership about 2 months ago. The first day I went there, I was intrigued because of all of the good reviews. I really wanted to buy this Garmin GPS thing. I could not believe how hard it was to find someone to help me.. when I was kind of looking for people to help. For example, I walked towards a worker who was looking for someone to help. Then he went to bother someone who didn't want help. I kind of hung around and was waiting to ask.. and then he reluctantly agreed to help me. I just wanted to buy the garmin GPS unit and leave the store. I checked online and they had it in stock and I wanted to make sure I'm PICKING up the right one. He helped me. As I had it in hand, I had a quick follow up question about "do I pay for it at the front or over by this fancy electronic area" but he ditched me. But ok, the nice lady at the front gave me a nice sales pitch about joining ROI. I made it clear that I read it all online and I'm just going to join, and decided before I got there. It seems like it pays for itself pretty easily. But ok, I left reasonably happy. The next time I went there, I got no help. I was looking to buy all of my winter clothes.. I just wanted to ask a simple question.. but I felt like sales staff was avoiding me. I then wanted to find a manager.. As I was approaching some guy who worked there.. he saw me, then followed some family to see if they needed help! Of course this is all probably coincidence, but I was just annoyed. Another sales clerk was trying to give someone a pitch about why joining ROI is beneficial. I finally found someone and asked if I could speak to a manager.. and I just wanted to tell the manager that I want to cancel my ROI membership because it is a terrible shopping experience and twice I went there just hoping to quickly make purchases in under 3 minutes.. but I can't get any help. And then the guy told me he can help me instead of a manager... and he told me how they help everyone. So I just asked him if I can speak to a manager about canceling my membership because I really don't like this store.. and he basically asked me what I need help with so he can help me. And I told him "I need help canceling my membership. I all even pay for all of these items before canceling my membership". But ok, I just hate how I read all of these wonderful reviews about how great this place is.. and how I had horrible experiences AFTER joining their program. And then I have similar stories about them BEFORE I joined.. I was completely insane for joining. I forgot how much I hated this place. I LOVE sporting good stores, and I go to Academy and Sports Authority way too much. In Dallas I used to go to Oshmann's all the time (out of business now I think) and Dick's Sporting goods. I love REI! I love camping and the out doors so I get excited when I come to this place. This visit was to get the suunto ambit 3 peak watch for my husband. He did his studying on which watch would be better so be went with the ambit 3. The reason this place lost stars was because non of the employees knew about watches. Booo! My husband had a quick question about the watch and they couldn't help him so he had to look it up online. When we went to check out the first thing the employee asked was if we have a membership. Gosh okay let us put down the product first haha. They lost more points there because of the pushy sales. We can't stand pushy sales people. I am just happy that my husband ended up getting the watch. That watch is not available to get anywhere else other than online. Love this place but they got to work on knowing about all the products in the store and not be too pushy. read more

Get all of your high end camping, hiking, outdoor equipment here. This is my fiance's favorite store I am sure. The prices may not be as good as you can find online, but trying something out in the store does help a lot. The employees are also super helpful. Everything is of good quality and they have a one year return policy. This isn't the largest store, but they have a little bit of everything. They have a small climbing section, but it's starting to grow a little bit. They had some nice Miura climbing shoes on sale cheaper than what I could find online, so they do have great deals sometimes. Ask for JP in the climbing section. He's very knowledgable and will point you in the right direction. I wanted to buy the sale shoes, and instead of pushing me to buy them JP gave his honest opinion and suggested I get another size. I came in twice today for a return. I had a complicated exchange process. I wanted to exchange two gifted items, but the Houston Westheimer store didn't have either in stock -- they were only available online from the REI Garage. And because the items were given to me from my dad, I didn't have the receipt. On my initial visit, I just wanted to see what my options were. Rich was super helpful, but I decided to think on it because I don't do well with decisions. After coming home, looking online, and thinking some more, I made a decision of what I wanted to do and went back to REI. I asked for Rich since he had helped me a couple hours prior and I knew my process was going to be complicated. Rich was very patient and helped me get everything situated as I had hoped. He was cordial and a pleasure to talk with. He went above and beyond for me, & I am extremely grateful. I wish there were more I could do to show my appreciation -- he was awesome! REI is like a crackhouse for outdoorsy people. You walk in, and you can't resist buying some of the good stuff. I am still a big fan of Whole Earth, but if you can't afford paying premium and want to have more choices than you ever thought possible for a water filtration system or a sleeping bag pad, REI's your place. The great thing is that if you pay $20 for the membership, you're in for a lifetime of dividend checks for 10% of what you buy each year. Plus, it's right by Sun & Ski Sports, so you can get the 2 for 1 shopping experience. The comparison shopping helps too, because sometimes one is having a sale on an item that might not be on sale in the other store. read more

We went to REI a couple of weeks ago to get ready for a multi-day backpacking trip across the Big Bend Outer Mountain Loop. The terrain is steep, rocky, and primitive to say the least, and we were only able to cache water for one day. We knew we needed lightweight gear, but we had no idea where to start. A sales associate spotted us wandering towards the sleeping bags and immediately asked if we needed help. We told him about our trip and some future trips we're planning, and he promptly proceeded to provide recommendations. He helped us pick out down bags, inflatable pillows, backpacking sleeping pads (our first choice wasn't in stock but we were very happy with the ones we purchased), stuff sacks, backpacks, and a backpacking tent. He didn't try to up-sell, and he waited patiently as we deliberated over what to buy. He spent a good two hours helping us. Needless to say, REI isn't cheap, but this kind of gear is NEVER really cheap. When the cashier announced our total, we stood there in silent shock for a few seconds before reaching for our wallets, but the customer service made the price tag well worth it. We ended up loving all of our purchases. The REI Half Dome 2 tent was lightweight, but still kept us warm in our sleeping bags on the coldest, windiest nights (down to the 20s). Our backpacks (Osprey and Gregory) stayed fairly comfortable on our shoulders, even carrying 45-75 pounds on steep inclines and declines. We can see ourselves using and re-using our gear for years to come. REI also has a great return policy...you can return or exchange anything within a year of purchase. Clothing and shoe selection at this location were slightly limited, but overall it was an awesome experience. read more

I didn't know about this place until my friend took me camping and introduced me to the addiction known as REI. I bought a head lamp for 20 and use it often at night to read when I'm too lazy to get out of bed haha. They had a Labor Day sell recently and everything was 30% off so of course I had to stop by. I got into rock climbing recently and decided to invest in a harness which were luckily on sale! The employee who helped me was a older gentleman and was very patient with me throughout the whole process cause I had to try several and hang from the rope. They didn't have my size and ordered it immediately at the register while ringing me up for my nalgene bottle, apollo lamp, pillow, and clif bars. I joined the co-op membership cause I was using my friend's co-op card and decided that I'd like a little bit of that money in my pocket instead of his. I definitely like this place a lot better than Academy. read more

Only one store inspires me to go outside and climb mountains (or, at least dream about it). And that's REI. I go to REI whenever I need some quality outdoor gear or some outdoor-gear advice. Recent purchases include a headlamp, bike helmet, bike jacket, hiking shoes, a camelbak and I always get my gels/bars/chews there because, if you buy at least 12, you get a discount. What's great about REI is that it's a co-op. Basically, what that means to you and me is that, if you become a member, you get a 10% dividend of the amount you spent at REI the year before. And, since you're buying quality gear (read: it ain't cheap!), that dividend equals a noticeable amount. As a member, you also get to vote for the board of directors, which doesn't really affect your day-to-day consumerism, but it's neat to feel like you have a say in how a company is run. If you want to get/stay involved in the local outdoor community, sign up for REI's monthly emails. The emails tell you about REI-hosted classes and local outdoor events. I took a photography class that was held in the backroom of REI--great advice on outdoor photography and photo gear. All in all, REI is the first place I consider when I need anything outdoorsy. It's not Academy-cheap, but I doubt you'll be able to get what you need for your trek up Everest at Academy. read more

By far one of the best experiences in customer service. My friend and I plan on doing the MS150 and are complete noobs when it comes to practically anything in the biking realm. Right as we walked in, we were approached by the sales manager and he spent over 2 hours explaining the type of components, the make-up of the bikes and answered any of our question (as ridiculous as they probably sounded). We were even fitted (struggled to get on bike) and test drove one without much discomfort- all the while with the support and light hearted humor of the sales manager. This experience was quite possibly one of the best when compared to other bike shops and by no means were they condescending toward us for not knowing a single thing about road bikes. We walked out like champs knowing more than we thought possible. Very enlightening experience. Highly considering buying a bike from here (after I let the price of the bike marinate for some time). What keeps me coming back? The items are definitely some of the best you will find, but I just wish there were more of them for women. If you are the type who likes being outdoors, then the membership is the best. For example? I went today to get myself some "e-tip" gloves. With my membership dividend the gloves were free plus they paid me another $1.40. I only remember buying a couple of pairs of pants and maybe some socks this year. So not a bad return I think. So that is what keeps me coming back - some of the best outdoor brands (Smartwool, Patagonia, North Face) plus the membership deals. read more

I would never give REI as a whole only 2 stars because, c'mon, it's REI. However, this location in particular isn't on par with other ones I've been to. I'm not sure if they're understaffed or what, but I've found that there seem to be a lot of employees around, but none that are actually available to help customers. For instance, I'm currently on the phone with the store. All I want to know is if they have a bear bag in stock. I've been on hold for 15 minutes now. I love REI and I've always been a fan, don't get me wrong. One thing I like about this location is that it is central to everything. It's actually situated next to another sporting goods store that would be equivalent to "Sports Authority" or "Sports Chalet" in CA. The establishment itself was not as big as others I've visited nor did they carry a vast selection of active wear shoes for men and women. I usually shop at REI for rock climbing gear and other small necessities of which this place seemed to carry a good stock of, but I wish they had more shoes to choose from. Since Academy was right next door, I decided to swing by there and found a wider selection of shoes and apparel. Of course, I didn't spend much time at REI since they did not have what I was looking for. I will only come here again for small accessories or for rock climbing gear. read more

REI has been a magical place for me since I first became a member of the Co-op at their Dallas location back in 1993. Back then stores were few and far between, but all of them had a climbing wall and sparked the fires of adventure whenever you walked inside. Now, REI is a bit more of a standard retailer, but they have held true to their roots. The main Houston location on Voss and Westheimer still rents gear at very reasonable prices (canoe down Buffalo Bayou anyone?), still hosts the members only "garage sale" most months, and still hires very knowledgeable and helpful staff. If you need outdoor gear in Houston, REI is the place to get it. It is expensive, yes, but REI has always stood by everything they sell with an ironclad 100% guarantee. I have seen people return gear years later with the obvious use of hundreds of trips on it and REI has accepted the return with barely a question asked. It is that unwavering commitment to the products they sell and the people they sell them to that distinguishes REI. Also, being a cooperative, REI takes care of its members...10% back as a dividend on almost everything you buy (excludes clearance and garage sale items) paid out each year as a store credit. Lastly, it is easy to feel good about the fact that they donate a lot of money to protect our wilderness and recreational spaces, as well as coordinate volunteer efforts to work on recreational spaces in and around Houston. Also, if you genuinely feel that REI is too expensive, try simply shopping the sale and clearance items. I outfitted a good deal of my kit in this way; it takes a bit longer and you are always getting last year's model, but it is an economical way to go. I highly recommend REI. It is one of my very favorite stores, and being a member makes me feel really good about shopping there. read more

I have been a REI customer for the last 15 years and I will never go back after how I was treated today. I purchased a Thule Motion XT XL from REI #55 on Westheimer in Houston several weeks ago and just got a call on March 15, 2023 that it was ready to be picked up. A copy of the Credit Card receipt is posted on Google reviews. I went there today on March 18, 2023 and was informed that the transaction was cancelled because I NEVER picked it up. I looked at my original receipt from REI and they had put a DIFFERENT customer name on my order (also posted on Google reviews) but had used MY Credit Card. Despite this being 100% REI's fault, they refused to give me the Thule and claimed that my Credit Card had been refunded (it never was). The Thule was actually still in the store but they had taken it out of the box and they refused to let me even try to buy it again, even though I asked multiple times to repurchase the item. The staff there who treated me so rudely was Fareed Majeed and his manager Carly Wright. They spent their whole time saying there was nothing they could do and they did not try to resolve the situation. They even had me talk to a Sonja on the phone from their Financial Department who said there was nothing she could do. They were not a bit concerned that I had another customer's information. AVOID these people and this store. They obviously have no problems giving private customer information to other customers, and will not refund you even if they made the mistake. I have since purchased the Thule on the internet from another company and will never shop at REI again. read more

Used to love REI - been a member for decades - but the company has changed. I bought a very nice and expensive pair of hiking boots (ASOLO's) that mostly sat unused in my closet for several years. Out on the trail for a short easy hike and the sole of one of the boots fell off. Fell off! Then the other one fell off! Apparently the foam cushion in the sole rotted and there was nothing for the rubber sole to attach to. No problem, right? This is REI, they stand behind the products they sell! Apparently not - store manager refused the return, *even though the boots were bought when REI's return policy was unconditional*! What's more, looking over the reviews at REI, a couple dozed other customers report the exact same product failure. How could REI of all places sell defective goods and then refuse to honor their own warranty?!? I suppose I'd still shop at REI if I had no other choice, but I'll avoid it when I can and I certainly won't count on their warranty. REI is essentially now the Walmart of outdoor equipment. I came in with specific needs for a trip and was given the "its over there behind that section " and when I wasn't able to locate it, asked another Floor rep, who was about to answer me but someone came up to him and he almost spit out his words; "there's people that think they need hurricane supplies".
