It is one of those odd things that you can have an experience earlier in the course of a week long…read moreroad trip that makes you appreciate the little things somewhere else along the way. That is definetley the case with this location of IHG properties. This chain is consistenly solid over the years so I wasn't expecting anything less than what we had. They in the midst of a renovation, but around a bit of dust here, anda paint splash there, it was still clean (much cleaner than a previous place in Wilmington). The staffer that checked us in was pleasant and efficient. Our beds were comfortable, lots of pillows. We had a little problem with the shower the first night (operator error, or rather we didn't know the trick for a janky tub/shower valve). We called and they sent someone within about 5 minutes. [It was one of the maids that had experience with our room, a sweet soul, very pleasant...I do have to ask though, how many tattoos are too many tattoos]. The breakfast was pretty well put out, two hot protiens each day, eggs, potato options, oatmeal, cereal, pancake machine, etc. Even the most finicky kid would not walk away hungry unless they wanted to, for whatever reason it is that finicky kids do things. The hot tub worked, good temperature, pool was nice, neither had too much chlorine. While you didn't have to walk through the lobby (like some hotels- why designers, why?) there was a giant window from the front lobby/breakfast area to the pool area. My wife was a bit off put by that. I guess you would feel a bit like a fish in the aquarium if someone was there looking in. Definiteley a good stay, nothing is cheap anymore, so $346 for two nights in a non capitol city in Ohio might feel steep, but hey that's what the market will bear, so all good that's good. We would come back if in the area.

I stayed in the lodge hotel rooms with our friend and 2 year old. I booked the king suite with a pull out couch and balcony. It was perfect, had a view of the lake and was right near the bar restaurant. It was very convenient having 2 bathrooms. The main bedrooms bathroom was newly re done, the other rooms seemed older but worked fine. There's dish cable tv and wifi. I was told there were charcoal grills for use and when I arrived they didn't seem to know anything about it which was odd. However we found grills for use next to the playground near the lodge. The story book trail is great for a nice hike with little ones. My husband enjoyed the disc golf course. I wish on the website they clarified that if you want to swim in the lake you have to drive to the swimming beach, but it wasn't too far. There's boating and hunting and fishing as well. Food at the restaurant is over priced but you pay for convenience since there's nothing close by to eat. There's fire pits with a nice view of the lake, and fire wood to purchase if you didn't bring your own. The rooms have a microwave and mini fridge. Overall we have a very nice time and I'd definitely come back.

This review is for the lodge restaurant. (not the lodge, the cabin, or the state park)…read more Yikes! Please avoid eating here. If you must, the way to go is order a pizza to go and pick it up when it is ready. The pros: beautiful view over the water, great at sun down. The cons: the food took way too long to come out. They forgot to bring the soup and salad we order before the meal, and by the time they went to get my soup, they had run out of that kind! See attached photos and video of the fish. Sad to say both my wife and I ordered that same meal. When it finally did come out the fish was so deeply fried that it was rock hard and there was not much remanence of any kind of fish meat left to be scavenged. Not even a forest dwelling mongrel would have gone for this disastrous preparation. I asked the waitress if it was supposed to be like this and she said "yes". (looking back that is a pretty funny answer) I told her that we were not going to be able to eat the meal. I mean even if we wanted to, it really wasn't food at this point. Is there anything she could do for us? After going to the back and having a discussion with her manger, she came back and said she could provide 30% off of each fish meal..... that is so close to doing nothing. And it wasn't just us. After we "ate" another couple stopped us and told us about the terrible experience they had with the meal. Burr Oak Lodge Restaurant, I suggest you just serve pizza.

Whistlestop is located at the end of a dirt road (literally off the beaten trail), so don't be too worried if you wonder if you're going the right way--keep going back the road and it's just over an old rail line. The B&B is the basement of an old farm house and the room is spacious. As Brian mentioned, the room had a queen size bed, couch, working fireplace, pool table, kitchenette, and private bath. The owners, Sherry and Mike, were a delightful couple and we had a chance to peak into their beautifully renovated kitchen and meet their lovable boxer, Lucy. Tons of snacks to pick from, but easily the best were the homemade sticky buns and chocolate chip cookies. Sherry stocked the fridge and pantry with breakfast items for the next day (yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, breakfast bowls). Brian enjoyed a couple rounds of pool while I feasted on several hours of HGTV's "Property Brothers" on the biggest flat-screen TV I've seen in someone's house (60-inch?). The bed was cozy, covered with beautiful colored linens, and I think if you wanted to leave the blinds open, you could wake to a beautiful sunrise amongst the nearby trees. I woke up early Sunday morning to do a bit of reading and enjoy a cup of tea by the fireplace. Perfection. Since we were there in late March, we didn't get to enjoy this amenity, but there is a fire pit so you can make some s'mores (yes, they provide all the fixings for that too). I need to ask Brian when we can go again...it was a great weekend to unplug and just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Columbus. (although, they have free Wifi, just in case you need it :) )

My family and I booked the room specifically so our children could enjoy the pool over the weekend. We are local, so the pool was the only reason for our stay. When we arrived, the front desk staff completed the check-in process and only afterward informed us that the pool was closed. Had we been told this before checking in, we would not have proceeded with the reservation at all. Because the pool was unavailable, we stayed in the room for less than an hour while trying to resolve the issue. The front desk told us they could not cancel since the booking was through Expedia, so we contacted Expedia directly. Expedia reached out to the hotel, but the hotel declined to issue a refund even though we did not stay and primary amenity we booked for was unavailable. Charging nearly $300 for a stay we could not use is unfair, especially when the lack of disclosure prevented us from making an informed decision. We would have never checked in had we been told the pool was closed. I have stay at this hotel many of times and have never had issue this time however was different. The pool was the reason i left however, i was upset already because when we arrived she said there was a 250 deposit which I have never had to pay all the other time we stayed and she was going to cancel then and I said no ill figure it out however if she would have informed me the pool was close before checking us in I would have let her canceled. The woman wasnt friendly either. I was also informed they are under new management. Explains why it is going downhill.

I'm pregnant & wanted to relax after the grueling drive. We arrive only to find out the room we booked that i also paid extra for was sold out so was given a "standard" room. No apologies, no partial refund just a shoulder shrug from the front desk boy Travis. Get to our room 1130 pm, it's freezing from window being left open in December. Try to get some rest & there's adults downstairs screaming at each other, goes on for 30 minutes, then their baby starts crying for an extensive amount of time. I went down to see what the actual f was going on, cops, ambulances & adults still yelling running around hallways barefoot and baby screaming crying, Ohio I guess.. I go back to room, call the front desk and ask for them to issue a refund we're at 1:15 am right now, they asked if we wanted to switch the room, husband was already passed out from driving all night & being a heavy sleeper. I feel like I got robbed of my money. Travis confirmed the cops have been there and that it should be getting quiet soon & that his manager will handle it in the morning, an hour passed & these people below us were still going at it. After a terrible, light night sleep we wake to continue our drive, I stopped at front desk to ask for manager, right off the bat she says no refund, doesn't apologize & says that's she been informed of the problems of our stay in such a rude manor. Desk boy lied to us in the night just to get through his shift and hand the issue to the next person, imagine. Unbelievable do yourself a favor & do NOT stay here!! Avenwood Cabin - Front of The Millers Den cabin

    Avenwood Cabin

    (22 reviews)

We stayed at the Settler's Roost cabin…read more NOTES: -If you're coming here while it's rainy or icey, you'll likely want a 4-wheel drive vehicle. My little 2-wheel drive sedan did okay after two days of rain (and lots of mud), but it there would have been any ice or a ridiculous amount of rain, there's no way we were getting out of there. Lots of tight, steep hills and gravel don't play well together. -Neither US Cellular nor Sprint customers seem to have service out here. The cabin has Wi-Fi, which helps, but make sure to plan ahead. It isn't often that I find myself in a "genuine" deadzone. No roaming, no nothing. -There are some small, cement blocks leading from the gravel driveway to the front door of the cabin. It's not a lot, but it's a little bit. However, if it's been raining or wet, expect quite a decent amount of mud from your car to the front door (there's a nice doormat right inside the door that helps with that problem, though). PROS: -It's decently spacious. You wouldn't want a family in here (or more than two people, really), but you won't feel like you're constantly on top of your cabin-mate either. -The bedroom is pitch black in the evenings. Absolutely pitch black. If you love sleep like that, you'll love it. Otherwise, cracking the bedroom door a bit lets the ambient light from the microwave and oven display provide a bit of direction in the room. -The cabin has Wi-Fi. I know, I know, we're escaping from nature, but without phone service OR Wi-Fi, I would have felt a bit uncomfortable in case of an emergency. Plus, the Wi-Fi will let you watch some romantic films on the TV or other things like that. -The cabin sounds so lovely in the rain. It has a thinner roof than most homes, so you can definitely hear all of the raindrops. No leaks, though, so that's nice. -The cabin is close enough to nature that you'll likely see nature. There were two deers nomming their way through our backyard grass while we were there. Expect to hear lovely bird sounds and everything. As we came in winter, there were virtually no bugs, but I'm sure that isn't the case in summer. For enjoyment of the summer animal sounds, though, the windows are open-able and do have screens on them. -The cabin was rustically decorated. In addition to being a full wood construction, the small decor additions add to the rustic feel - not detract. That's nice. -The fireplace was used a heat source for the cabin. It was directly attached to the thermometer for the room - and it does put out heat! I wish it was able to just turn on and look beautiful without so much heat, but it definitely has the "real fireplace" feel to it, so that's a nice addition. -Hot tub on the back porch was perfectly warmed with clean water and no debris in it. Hot tub lid was easy to get on and off. -No laundry. However, the cabin does provide four full-sized towels, some washclothes, and some hand towels. With all of the hooks around the cabin, it's easy to let things airdry and reuse them as necessary during your stay. There was also 4 rolls of toilet paper and an extra roll of papertowels. We didn't run out of anything during our stay. CONS: -No dishwasher. This is likely just a silly expectation on my part, but I was surprised to see no dishwasher in an otherwise-equipped cabin. This wouldn't be a huge problem on its own, but as the cabin only has two copies of most things (bowls, teaspoons, etc.), you'll be doing dishes pretty regularly throughout your getaway. -The promotional photos make it look super private. That's only somewhat the case. When you come in, you'll notice lots of cameras and signs about how the property is under video supervision. And when you make it to the cabin itself, you'll see that you definitely have neighbors. Not to the point where you share a driveway, but to the point where I ended up waving at them while we were both loading up our vehicles at the same time. This is not really a "super private" cabin. -While the cabin is "full plumbing", the hot water is a bit on the "has character" side. To get the water to stay warm in the shower, you'll need to turn on the bathroom sink at the same time. This only manages to get the water to a tolerable lukewarm temperature. To get the kitchen sink to a hot temperature to wash dishes, you'll have to turn on that bathroom sink at the same time as well. It's not the end of the world, but it's a bit of trial and error you'll figure out as you go. -You have to be a bit careful around some of the wood areas. While the floor and some of the walls/areas of this full wood cabin construction have been sealed, it's clear that some of the areas were sanded but not painted with sealant. After getting a small wood sliver dragging my hand along a drawer front, I was a lot more careful.

You are just a short drive away from an abundance of gorgeous hiking trails. Being able to enjoy the hot-tub on the porch while being surrounded by forrest sounds and gorgeous views was just the reset we needed. My only true negative was that the mattress was extremely uncomfortable. I do think there are a few minor things that could make this cabin even better. (From a picky convenience point) -the couch is less for lounging and more for sitting up (like a waiting room) a soft ottoman would really improve the ability for couples to cuddle by the fire. -there are no couch side tables to set drinks on -the shower is SMALL (which is to be expected in a tiny cabin) if you added a shower head that can come down it would make it much easier to wash off mud from hiking because maneuvering in that tiny space is nearly impossible. - some sort of shelf/counter space for the bathroom that way if you are staying longer you can keep your necessities stored in there.
