Shine - So happy with my hair - great colour and cut

Tucked away, down a little alley, you might think that Shine is hiding its light under a bushel…read more Shine is a beauty, hair and pampering salon in North Laine that has got a great reputation and is thriving despite the downturn. Ladies who lunch still need to look good, it seems. Not a usual environment, I won a haircut at Shine in a raffle. The whole Shine experience is about relaxation. Big comfy chars, a farmhouse table loaded with newspapers and mags and a laid-back ambience make this a very genial little place. Best of all, noone is peering through the window as you're groomed. So after a relaxing head and shoulder massage, an opulent hair wash, and a cup of coffee, my stylist Charles, got down to business. What a nice guy. An Isle of White native, he actually cared more about my hair than I do and suggested all sort of clever styles and looks that would make me look fabulous. I've got to say, being no expert on such things, he did a cracking job. But let's be honest. This place is a bit of a treat. A luxury most of us can ill afford. I think my do would have cost something like £50. That's par for the course, it was a lovely experience, but regrettably out of reach for me on my everyday budget.

Can't recall my hairdresser's name but he was one of the older guys that work there. He didn't listen to my original request, I went there with my hair in a terrible condition... I wanted an interesting colour technique, instead my hair came out looking brassy and with a discernible dark bar where he'd not quite matched the root highlights to the rest of my hair. The initial cost of £140 completely stunned me, normally I wouldn't complain but at that price I expect excellence. To give the salon their due, they offered to redo my hair FoC, but unfortunately it was with the same guy, again, he didn't really listen to me and seemed to bluff his way out of the bodge-up. I left the salon still unhappy, but couldn't be bothered to take it any further. My story is too long to detail here. It's now Jan 2011 and so reluctant to go to get my roots done because in my experience of Brighton hairdressers I just can't find a fabulous colourist, it doesn't matter how little or how much I pay. PS I had to give 1 star for this review, I suppose the one star would go the the Aveda hair products they use in Shine, they certainly resstored the condition. But the salon itself is awful, no towels to wrap around your head after washing, only something that looks and feels like a dishrag. Their LED/fluorescent lighting is useless especially to judge hair colour under. I'm all for 'green' businesses... but hair salons need bright, clean and flattering lighting. PS If my profile pic is the one with pink hair..... it's a wig!!! Wish my hair looked that good lol!!!

Booking online was straight forward and easy. At the time of the appointment, I was warmly greeted by staff upon arrival and was offered a refreshment and slippers. Within 10 minutes, I was then taken up to my room and my treatment schedule was explained. I went into the infrared sauna which was a bit challenging but so refreshing once finished. My massage was two words: simply amazing. My masseur was great with the amount of pressure towards my stress points and really made me feel like it wasn't a rushed session. All in all, I can confidently say that this visit was well-spent! Will definitely come back again soon!

The staff were very friendly and welcoming, with just the right level of chat. I chose my colour from the selection of Opi polishes and the lady set to work on my hands first. I was pleased with the shape and the painting of my nails, something that can sometimes be a little hit and miss. For the pedicure I was placed in the most amazing massage chair. Not the type I have experienced before that just gently vibrates. This was was like receiving a proper massage, I almost fell asleep! Again, the pedicure was great, the dry skin scraped away from my feet by a cheese grater-like instrument! My only complaint would be that the cuticle removal was quite painful on both my fingers and toes. I was offered drinks while I waited and there were plenty of magazines to peruse. I would definitely consider coming back here in the future, with or without a voucher. Other treatments on offer include facials, waxing, massage and reflexology.

It's time for me to own up…read more Maintaining this level of hideousness does not come without a cost. I love Kiehl's products, but that is not the reason I am giving this particular store 5 stars. The men's section is just inside the doorway. You can't miss it, all products are in a very masculine navy blue. The checkout and staff are usually located at the back of the store. This is perfect. If I am feeling particularly unsociable, I can step inside the store, browse the men's products and then exit the store quickly should one of the staff step towards me. I often don't want to conversate for two reasons. 1: Because I want some time to let my scepticisim and curiosity breathe. I want some time to see what's on offer, read about the ingredients, smother some shit on my wrists and navigate my way through the complex world of male skincare. Alone. 2: I don't want them judging me. Sometimes beauty consultants will come over and say things like "What skincare do you use at the moment?". They know full well what they are doing. They see this face and their soul screams, "How can he leave the house like that!", but through their leading questions they supress their disgust. This makes me feel awkward. Fortunately, the staff in Kiehls are polite and not intrusive. They might ask if you need any help, but if you say no, they will leave you alone. If you do ask for help, you don't feel patronised and they genuinely make an effort to try and help. You should also know that they have a one month return policy. So if you try one of the producs sand it doesn't work out, you can return the product. I also like that all the products are neatly aligned and there is always a tester available for whatever product you're considering. Ask if you can try some samples and the staff will guide the way. I kind of like that they all wear white lab coats. I've just realised, that probably tricks me into thinking the place is super clean and sterile. Smart. I have one tip for them. They should diffuse Kiehl's Musk Eau de Toilette throughout the store. It's an incredible scent.

I've been wanting to try their products for a long time, but had never gotten around to buying any. I was recently bought a gift set containing a full size face wash, toner and a moisturiser, but unfortunately I felt like it's not quite right for my skin. I went back to Kiehl's today to get some advice on possibly changing the type of products I need to use on my skin. When going into a higher-end shop I always worry that I'm going to be given the hard sell and feel pressurised into buying something, but this was not the case at Kiehl's at all. The lady who was assisting me was really helpful and was happy to ask me any questions I had about the products. I ended up buying a new facial wash, and was told that there is a 28 day guarantee whereby you can bring your products back to exchange or refund should the product not be quite right for your skin! I wish I had known this before as I would definitely have swapped the products that I was gifted. I did a little research in to the company and found out that Kiehl's don't really advertise; instead they have built a customer base on word of mouth, and giving out samples with every purchase. I was given three samples today, and they weren't just random samples thrown in to the bag, but samples of products that I might find better for my skin. I've tried one of them already and I'm really pleased with the results. I'm going to be using Kiehl's a lot more in future, their products may cost slightly more than high street brands but the quality of the products, service and information you get when buying their products is worth it.
