In April, I contacted Pittsburgh Excavation to ask if they could provide an estimate for French drains for my back and side yards. Within several minutes--fast!--Bryan responded to my email. Bryan explained that my current HydroBlox drains do not work well in clay soil, so he recommended traditional French drains. A few days later, Bryan visited my house to provide an in-person estimate. He was very thorough and polite in answering my questions. I appreciated his recommendations about the number, width, depth, and location of drains in my yard. After another few days, Bryan emailed me a written estimate, and he answered my additional questions via email. In the end, I decided to hire a different company that had slightly different ideas and a slightly lower price. I, however, wanted to write a review for Pittsburgh Excavation to thank them for their prompt and friendly communication and their brainstorming for solutions for my problems. If you are seeking any of the services that they offer, then I recommend that you contact them for an estimate.

J Bird's Landscaping - Finished dry well (pipes/grate circled in blue)

J Bird's Landscaping and Excavating has been in business for many years, and they do a lot of…read moreexcavation and French drains. My backyard receives a massive amount of runoff from neighbors' yards, so last year I hired J Bird's to install hundreds of feet of large French drains. J Bird's employees spent 3.5 days to excavate my yard and to lay down landscape fabric, pipes, gravel, topsoil, grass seed, and hay. I did have to plant a lot of my own grass seed to get the grass to grow. In the past several months, particularly in the winter and spring, I observed how the French drains absorbed and moved water in my yard. I think that the French drains have greatly reduced the large puddles of water in my backyard. This year, however, I noticed that my front yard was not adequately absorbing the water that was exiting the French drain pipe, so I hired J Bird's again to install a dry well or gravel pit. J Bird's employees spent 3.5 hours building the dry well. So far, I have observed the effectiveness of the dry well for only about one month, but the dry well appears to absorb the water from the French drains. In the Pittsburgh area, not many businesses install French drains and dry wells that are wide and deep, so if you need large French drains, then I highly recommend that you get an estimate from J Bird's. I spent tens of thousands of dollars on my French drains and dry well, but the prices were slightly lower than what an engineer would charge.

My senior dog has early stage…read morekidney disease and when I have to be away from home I have been leaving him a potty pad in my bathroom. These pads sometimes leak underneath and recently when mopping I have noticed some leakage in the toilet area. Mopping with bleach was no longer cutting it and I started to realize that under the toilet was the problem. I needed to have a plumber come and take the toilet off so I could clean well underneath, put it back in place and obviously find a better solution for my dog going forward because this is just bad. I reached out to Drain Bros. via Yelp on the strength of their excellent reviews and proximity to me in Bethel Park. They had a same day opening which was amazing. I almost immediately heard back from someone via text to confirm I still needed help, followed up by a call to make the appointment. Technician Seth called when he was about 15 minutes from my house to let me know his location. He was hard-working and knowledgeable, had no qualms about the nature of the problem I was so horrified about, and when the toilet was off set about cleaning the tile himself, although I insisted it should be my job as it's my dog. He said when he replaces a toilet he always cleans well underneath no matter what to start from a clean footprint, so it was absolutely no problem. He also said my timing was good because the wax seal under my toilet had been giving out and needed to be replaced. He did very good work with attention to detail, pride in the job and respect, putting on shoe covers whenever he needed to come in or out of the house. Earlier during the initial phone call, I asked for an estimate for this job, was quoted $250 and that was exactly what I was charged. I found these guys to be very efficient, honest and upfront. I will definitely be calling them for any future plumbing needs and really appreciated the quick help today.
