I was searching the day spas in Memphis for a bit of tension relief and stumbled upon Renaissance Day Spa on Poplar near East High School. Renaissance is in one of those older, 1960's buildings along that strip of Poplar between Highland and Chickasaw Plaza. The inside is nice enough. Not overly posh, but nice. I am not one for the glamour in the reception area as I am the quality of the massage. My massage was GREAT. I believe I had a student (who are not allowed to receive tips) and she did an excellent job. Excellent technique from head to toe. In fact, I love a good scalp and face massage - which many places overlook or barely attend to - and this young lady really listened to what I was wanting from my massage. She even worked out the kink in my "crunchy muscle" in my left shoulder. I would highly recommend Renaissance. read more

I would NOT recommend a massage from this place. Given the customer service, I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Also beware, the Facebook reviews only show the positive ones. Don't let it fool you. I arrived at 12:55 pm for an appointment that was booked for 1:15 pm. When I walked in I told the receptionist my name and that I was there for a 90 minute massage. I stopped at the restroom (overflowing trash can and tissues all over the floor) then was shown to a massage room (large room for couples massages, nothing fancy, but not bad). After a quick ask of why I was there, I undressed and was on the table at 1:00 pm, face up as requested. I waited on the table for a long and concerning 20 minutes before anyone came back to check on me or start the service (I thought they may have left and I debated dressing and going to look for someone). At 1:20 pm the masseuse walked in and began the massage. No mention of the long wait at all. The massage itself was average. Very "grabby" versus more advanced massage techniques and while I mentioned tension in my shoulder and back area there was no extra focus or care given. It was very routine and I left not feeling relaxed or loosened (although the rough start may have contributed to that). The massage was done at 2:30 on the dot and the masseuse told me I was done and left the room. In my mind I was doing the math and realized that I paid for 90 minutes but only got 70 (not counting my 20 minute wait on the table). It was the Friday before the holiday and I just wanted to get out of there. While I should have spoken up then, I unfortunately paid them and (over)tipped and left. (Keep an eye on the tip options if you add it to your card, as they start at 15% versus 10%) They send a followup email for a survey. I responded to the email with my experience and said I chose not to write a negative survey response but wanted them to know my experience. They responded the same day with the following, "Our records show and if you check your confirmation, you will see that your appointment time was scheduled for 1:15pm. You arrived before your scheduled appointment time, therefore the therapist took you to the treatment room and gave you more time to settle in. Your treatment started at 1:20pm and ended at 2:30pm which resulted in a 70 min massage. Our 90 minute massages are actually 80 minutes of hands on treatment. The final 10 minutes are for clients to regroup and get dressed." So... I arrived early and instead of telling me or asking me to wait in the lobby, they set me up in a room and leave me. THEN, it is their custom to take off 10 minutes from your service, so you can change clothes within the time you've paid for. (Versus them coordinating that extra time needed between clients on their end, you know, as a business). Then they still started 5 minutes late and ended 20 minutes early (or 10 accepting to their day-spa-math). They offered me 10 minutes free to be added on to my next appointment, which I will skip since I'm not going back. They won't offer me a credit, they say, because I already received a $40 "1st time client" discount on my service. Just skip this place. There has to be somewhere with better customer service and better massages in the area. read more

ZERO STARS DO NOT EVER GO TO RENAISSANCE DAY SPA! On Poplar Ave. My lovely wife was so nice to buy me a very badly needed massage...deep tissue...just the way i like it. So when i called to make the apt. last week, i was extremely clear that i needed the strongest person they have on site BECAUSE I DO ENJOY IT REALLY REALLY DEEP. I explained that I am a glass blower...i spend my days with my arms extended out in front of me and my rhomboid muscles, behind the shoulder blades, get really knotted up. Not to mention 8 years of Roller Derby damage. So TODAY, needless to say...instead of what i asked for, i got some crappy, soft, sweedish, relaxation, aroma therapy, reflexology bullshit... NOT what i asked for and NOT what my lovely wife payed for. 60 MINUTES DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE is what the freaking gift certificate said. Ya know, You would think that if a company is offering a deep tissue massage, they would have someone employed there who is actually capable of giving a deep tissue massage. So i respectfully expressed my disappointment with the massage therapist and she did not even try to understand my frustration or offer to do anything to make it right. She simply said "i can't please everyone i guess" WOW. If she had just leaned in a little and put her weight behind her, it would have been fine. ..if she had offered to have a stronger therapist work on my shoulders for just 10 minutes, it would have been fine. I mean , if she had even attempted to rectify the situation in any way at all... i would have been less disappointed...but the fact that she provided poor service, that was not the specific service purchased and then did nothing at all to attempt to satisfy the customers needs when the customer expressed disappointment...means that these ladies really do not care for their clients or their business. DO NOT EVER WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. I can think of lots of ways to waste an hour laying on my back, that would be more relaxing, therapeutic and enjoyable than this. read more

Will not be returning. Pretty sure the therapist was on her phone majority of the time which is a NO NO in the massage room. I even felt it vibrate on the table smh. Massage was very start and stop like she was stopping to check or reply to messages. I asked for deep tissue which I'm positive it wasn't (being someone that knows massage very well)and it did nothing to relax me because of all the stopping. The flow was just off. I think it would've been ok if she would've focused on the massage instead of her phone. I scheduled a 90 minute massage but was ready to go about halfway through. Customer service was subpar. Not too much to make you feel comfortable. I only came here because I had a friend who went and actually enjoyed it. I also try to support black businesses as much as possible but I definitely won't be returning. read more

The worst "spa" experience ever. The experience was nothing less than mediocre. I will never go to the Renaissance Day Spa again in life. If you're looking for an exhilarating, relaxing, world class spa experience DO NOT waste your money at the Renaissance Day "SPA". First of all, the inside looks nothing like the pictures on the website. The inside of the so-called spa looks outdated and to say the least dirty. I booked an appointment for my friend's birthday, there were 5 of us. You would think if you advise the representative you speak with in advance that this is for a birthday celebration the rep would tell you that they don't have enough staff to accommodate your request. They did not inform me that they did not have the capacity to fulfill my request so a 3 1/2 day so called spa experience, turned into an approx. 6 hour frustrating experience. In addition, they did not provide any of the services within a group setting. Everyone was split up to complete their services. I received a facial and a massage. The facial was HORRIBLE...they did not give me a robe. I laid on the table with my jogging outfit on. Then I received a rub because it was definitely not a massage. During the rub I dozed off. When I awoke I was not receiving a massage. The "masseuse" had stopped rubbing me, when I wiggled my body to let her know I was awake she began again. Also, I told her that I did not want the oil to get in my hair. When the "rub" ended my hair was oily because she disregarded what I said and continued to do what she wanted to do. After the "rub" I was given a small plastic cup of tap water. When I asked about the complimentary glass of wine the person said to me, "You brought in your own drinks so we didn't think you wanted the wine." WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER....She brought out the wine in a small plastic cup and it was about a sip of wine. I could go on and on about this place but I feel like you get the gist of my complaint. read more

This place was HORRIBLE!!!!!!! I would not waist one penny here. My friend and I got a spa package that was suppose to include $300 worth of "stuff" for a valentines day special of 150. First of all they re not professional. The girl up from was reading a magazine and she said can I help you and we said yeah were here for our appointment and she said ok and looked at her magazine again then we said it was the Vday special. It was not clean in there and it did not smell like a spa should. The mani/pedi specialists were talking and their cell phones rang and they picked up, which mine finally turned off. I did not get the hand/foot massage that the package emphasized on, it was not any different then a normal nail salon where they charge 12 for the same and better service. The massage SUCKED and after she asked me if I wanted to leave a tip!!!!!! I couldn't comprehend the thought that that was what she was asking me so I had to ask her 3 TIMES what it was that she was saying... I did not want to get a facial, but that was the best part, but then again I've never had a facial so I have nothing to compare it to. I would never set foot in this place ever again! read more

Just had the most wonderful deep tissue massage from Tisha! Her technique had a very fluid progression and movement and she incorporated a few stretches to help with some of my problem areas. Her pressure was just right and I never had to ask her to adjust it. I loved being able to book my massage online instead of having to call in during business hours to schedule. Also, at $49.99 for an hour of deep tissue work, you can't beat the price anywhere else! I will definetly return for future massages! read more

The interior of this salon/spa isn't as nice as some other places in town, but the service is very good and everything is very clean. I received a full hour deep tissue massage after running a marathon and the massage therapist was great. She was thorough and professional. They are also very affordable and I appreciated that they were open on a weeknight evening. I would definitely go back. read more

Found this place online after looking at several other places. They have a very nice atmosphere despite the older building that it's in. They had an awesome online deal that drew me in. I had a massage, facial and pedicure, all three techs were very nice and professional and my services were TOP NOTCH! I will have to admit that I thought they were a large day spa but they are small boutique spa and family owned. Which was actually a plus for me because I enjoy shopping and supporting small business. loved my overall experience and I will be back! read more

This is truly a diamond in the rough! Amazing massages at very affordable prices. The building is not very appealing, and I thought about bailing on my appointment after seeing the spot, but I am so glad I didn't - the massage was outstanding! I opted for the 90 minute cocktail massage, which was total bliss. This treatment is basically a swedish style massage that incorporates aromatherapy, hot stones and hot towels. I only got an hour massage on the 90 day special, and I really enjoyed it. I thought the massage therapist was professional. She didn't seem like she didn't know what she was doing. When I asked why I did not receive a reminder call, they stated that, "they only do it sometimes and it is not part of their policy." I wouldn't waste your time or money on an establishment that lacks policies to protect their customers time and money. I have been getting my manicures and pedicures at Renassaince Day Spa for the past few years and I must say that my experience there has been magnificient. I like the way she pays attention to details. The ambience is relaxing and is very knowledgeable about nail care and gives you tips about taking better care of your hands and feet between appointments.
