After a fun-filled day wine tasting in Amador County, my friends and I were in need for some comfort food to end our day. This takes me to the small community of Mokelumne Hill (which is in Calaveras County) where I got to check out "Renegade Winery". Don't let the word "winery" fool you as this place not only serves some delicious wine but is also a full-on restaurant that has some good old standard American food. Since I know this area quite well and have been to neighboring areas such as Jackson and San Andreas, finding this place wasn't too difficult. But for some, it might be a challenge. When arriving on Highway 49 (from Jackson), you have the option of making a left on Campo Seco Turnpike OR a left on Main Street. The business is directly at the corner of Main & Center St's while being across the street from the historic I.O.O.F. building which neighbors a blacksmith business. If you're into ancient structures, definitely check this place out. Going back to Renegade Winery, they offer a variety of red and whites from nearby Amador County. In addition to their wine selection, they also have beer and regular soft drinks for consumption. But the main reason why we came here was their food! This includes comfort classics such as bruschetta, a meat/cheese platter, and a few others. They also carry a nice selection of salads, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, and pizzas. Finally, I wanted to add that they even offer a brunch menu on the weekends including mimosas. My significant other and I split their pesto pasta w/garlic bread while our friends tried a quesadilla and Caesar salad. As far as the interior layout of this place, it almost has that old town saloon feel to it which is the perfect fit for the gold country. The amount of distressed wood is presented throughout while the large collection of wine bottles is quite impressive. The employees that work here definitely made us felt welcome as if we were in someone's home. I also wanted to add that the exterior seating area was equally impressive with an abundance of tables, hanging lights after the sun goes down, and even a small stage for live music. If it wasn't for the heat (it was around 100°F on 6/22/2024 at 3:45pm), we would probably eat outside. As far as our pasta, they give you huge portions and more than enough to feed 2 people comfortably. The pasta was cooked well while there was a nice amount of basil in the pesto. It wasn't over-the-top amazing that you'd find at an Italian restaurant in a big city but still quite delicious and affordable (at around $16). Even our friends' spicy quesadilla had 4 large slices that can be split between two. Considering that you get a mix of everything (winery, draft beer, and food), this place has you covered. All in all, "Renegade Winery" is a place that I highly recommend. Keep in mind that they are ONLY open for business Fri/Sat from 11:30am-8pm and Sun from 9am-4pm while being closed from Monday through Thursday. So if you're taking a trip up to Big Trees or maybe Twain Harte or even Yosemite National Park, this is a great stop with above average service and very decent prices. The food has always been good, but I have to say that the new cook's specials menu is killing it every single weekend. Just had the jambalaya and the cheesy garlic shrimp (in a bread bowl). So very great! We've gotten to the point where we plan our weekend meals around trying all the specials and are never disappointed. The owners and staff are also amazing. read more

I've been wanting to try this place out for a while and finally got my ass up there. My Only regret is not going sooner. If you like good wine and good food this is the place. It's not your normal pretentious winery as they don't need to be. The service is by far some of the best you will ever receive. The food is outstanding I had the quesadilla with tritip and the fried Balogna sandwich My wife had the fish tacos. Both were better then any we have had els where. The house dog hung out with us and was happy to get a bite or two from us! We will be back and recommend this to anyone that wants good food and great wine. Went to this amazing little winery yesterday to have lunch with some friends and wine taste. The owners are very nice. Sue was such a gem., she makes wine tasting fun and is very informative as to how they got started to the knowledge of their wines. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was great! I loved all the pictures and decor. It's right in the middle of town and I plan on taking my daughter next time. This place would be great for first time wine tasters. This is a charming spot! I was going to give it 4 stars, but didn't want to penalize the staff/owners for being short-staffed when we dined there Sunday afternoon. We stopped on our way to Mariposa. They had a wonderful cover "band/duo" who were playing great songs (although, it would have been awesome if they had turned their speakers down a bit--it was LOUD) and we were sitting in the front. The food was delicious. We ordered the tri-tip tacos, the portobello panini, and the bacon burger--all absolutely delicious. We ordered 3 glasses of wine (I loved the Syrah the most), but the woman never brought them. After my friends were done with their meals and I had one taco left, I decided to go check on the status. There were two women who seemed to be working both front and back of house--and the place got packed midway through our lunch there. At some moments, it seemed as though the women were rushing around to all different tables taking orders...that was the main downside of our experience there -- we didn't have our wine with our meals. The server seemed irritated that I was checking on where our wine was, but I also saw another customer running her own plate of food to her table. I was surprised to see they didn't have a bartender on duty. This place has a ton going for it--great location, great food, the wine was okay except for the Syrah and Sangiovese--they were both very lovely, in my opinion. I hope they can bring in more help to create an even better experience for guests. They have a great chef in the kitchen! read more

Do not go here they treated us so unfairly didn't want to service us water after asking like 3 or 4 times the waitresses would just say oh yes you can service yourself because they had water station outside but I seen her serving a white man and a white family with no problem. Me and my friend were the only Hispanic in there and they didn't care for us they made it pretty obvious. They pretty much served us and ignored us the whole time the owner is just rude and unprofessional she was giving me attitude when I asked her about my reservation. She gave us a open wine bottle we noticed once we left because I bought one and you could tell right after we opened that it had already been open. Visited during the towns holiday open house. No where to sit inside which had a cozy fire stove so we settled outside.....the only fire pit didn't have propane and the one heating lamp that we saw was in a corner and wasn't on so it was pretty cold. We did wine tasting from their list and we were pretty impressed as we typically don't like reds but we enjoyed them more than the white we sampled. I ordered the flat bread pizza, my husband had the cheeseburger and both were good . They had a ladies choir entertaining the crowd singing Christmas carols. Considering it was pretty busy, service was adequate and we were visited by three different wait staff so we were taken care of. I would have given 5 stars had there been more heat sources to keep the outdoor customers warm but nevertheless we will return and hope we can enjoy the inside next time. :-) read more

When to the Renegade Winery on 8/25 for food, drinks and entertainment by the "After Dark Band ". We had a good time , but there were a couple things that I didn't care for. They had "Smokin Hot Meat's N Treats" food trailer outside on the street and it was ok but expensive. I'd never eat at that food truck again. Renegade had a cover charge of 10 dollars which is understandable for entertainment, but they were charging 9 dollars for tap draft beer and served them in red solo cups. Really? This is not Las Vegas or SF but the prices are and obviously by the red solo cups it's Mokelumne Hill. After a couple of rounds, our table all switched to Coors Light (5 bucks) which came in a can and they were warm and obviously outdated because they tasted nasty. The atmosphere here is wonderful, with a mostly local crowd. The owners are super nice. It's a very chill, fun-loving, all ages hangout in a hidden little Gold Rush town. The food and alcohol are good but not great (I miss the amazing food trucks they'd bring in on weekends. This is a great tasting room with some excellent wines. The tasting room is my favorite among the many wineries I've visited. Comfortable seating, friendly owners and staff, and I love the decor. They also have patio seating with a large fire pit which is very welcome on chilly winter days. Their wines are excellent; we enjoyed them so much we became wine club members. Wine not your thing? That's okay; they also serve some fine craft beers. And they serve food! My husband and I split the French dip sandwich; oh so good. Owners Mark and Sue go above and beyond in customer service. On a recent visit, even though it was late in the day and they were busy preparing for a private event, Mark took the time to light the fire pit for our group so we could sit outside to enjoy our taste of port.
