I've emailed, messaged on social and called and no answer or responses. I have MANY wine pick ups that I've paid for and no response. I'm hearing the same for other members. I've been a loyal and committed customer for years and years, and especially support local and small. I will happily adjust my rating when I either get reimbursed or get the year+ of wine I have to pick up. Absolutely disappointed with the lack of response and professionalism when that used to be priority. I understand hardships and things happen, but whatever is going on- absolutely no response or customer service is unfair and not right for all of the customers trying to get their wine all while also trying to enjoy the place again. Although the website shows that the tasting room is open, the gates are locked and no one answers the phone. I have several wine pick-ups that are already paid and am unable to pick-up or get a refund. The space is spectacular The wine is very good The service is fair at best- no checking in on you, left to come in and get what you need. surprising. We are wine club members and live in Oregon. We drive all the way down to Gianelli's tasting room to taste wine, pick up wine and celebrate our birthdays... only to find the gate closed. No one answering phone and no notice to wine club members about what's going on and why the closing. We feel slighted and cheated and feel we are due an explanation and some wine . read more

I drove all the way there from Manteca to celebrate my birthday and there was a sign on the gate that said it's closed and it will be opening at another day under new management or something like that. Gorgeous, large outdoor space and views looking east towards the Sierra foothills. The indoor tasting room is cozy and welcoming. I became a wine club member earlier this year and love having an excuse to visit to pick up my wine and enjoy a tasting on the outdoor patio. The wine is Italian style / varietals - most of the whites lean sweeter. They have a lot of variety (white, rose, red, sparkling). It's not the best wine I've ever had but pricing, inviting staff, and views make it worth coming back often. They also have events, so if you're local to the area, definitely follow them on social media or sign up for their newsletter. Cheers! read more

What an incredible find!!! This vineyard & tasting room located just outside of downtown Jamestown, CA. made our trip complete. We love this place! We've only been here twice because we can't get up the hill very often with our schedules and three young kids. We found it on accident a few years ago looking for a place to stop for a bathroom break. The most recent time we went was on our way to a wedding up the hill. It was very nice to try wines made from Italian varieties of grapes. In my opinion, wines made from grapes grown up here,in Tuolumne county differ from their Italian cousins by lower acidity, more aromas and higher body. I tried wines 2011-2014 years. Nebbiolo' 12, Grenache'12, Sangiovese'12, Dolcetto'11, Nino'14, Barbera'14. All were worthy. Staff was attentive and tried their best to answer questions. read more

Such a lovely find on Main Street Jamestown. Their tasting room is in a converted house with a large bar, tables, pet friendly patio and garden picnic area. They charge just $5 per tasting, which is credited towards any wine purchases. My fiancee and I split 2 tastings so we got to try almost every wines they are offering that Saturday. They specialize in more unusual Italian varietals. Of the roughly 10 wines I tasted, I enjoyed almost all of them and we ended up buying a bottle of their 2011 Dolcetto (red) and 2015 Fiano (white). The Fiano is a bright, crisp white wine that reminds me a bit of the NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wines I love. Most of their wines are fruit forward and lightly oaked, but full bodied with multiple notes. The owner happened to be in that afternoon and was a delightful, friendly lady. Would highly recommend a stop here to enjoy their tastings and buy their wines if you happen to be anywhere near Sonora/Jamestown. read more

Gianelli has perhaps the most charming tasting room in all of the Sierra Foothills AVA, with an attractive selection of estate-grown wines to match. For starters, the tasting room isn't a room at all: it's a house, replete with a tree-shaded garden and a covered wooden patio, alongside a beautiful bar and indoor seating section, plus a pretty gift shop section in the back that is cleverly situated so as not to interfere with the wine tasting experience itself. As for the wine tasting part, it's more of a grand tour of Italy than the usual selection of Californian wines. No typical Chards, Cabs, or Pinots here, just rare varietals that were imported directly from Italy and planted and vinified with the assistance of Calaveras County experts who developed many of the Sangiovese and Barbera vineyards in the area. Winemaking duties are held by a former assistant and cellar rat who learned his craft under the guidance of Chuck Hovey, one of the area's most award-winning winemakers with deep roots in Sierra Foothills wine (and whose own, quaint-looking tasting room in Murphys is also worth a visit). The whites here are as good as the reds, especially the Vermentino and Fiano, which are increasingly desirable grapes to grow in climate-changing California at the moment. Of the two, the Vermentino is brighter and more floral with great acidity and balance, while the Fiano has notes reminiscent of Chardonnay or Viognier, with less oak and more fruit aromatics. There are also excellent red wines to choose from, many of which receive extended periods of barrel aging and are released only after several additional years in bottle have passed, akin to the styles practiced in Italy in places like Piedmont or Tuscany. The library releases we sampled of 2010 Nebbiolo, 2012 Barbera, and 2011 Aglianico were all very good, rich and aromatic with long finishes and pleasant wood and herbal notes. A reserve Montepulciano and estate Primitivo are powerful, New World styled wines with lots of dark fruit, oak, vanilla, and spice, while a Dolcetto has lower alcohol and softer tannins, making it a highly drinkable alternative to the more brooding, bolder wines on the tasting menu. With a modest $5 tasting fee and more than a dozen wines to choose from, from a rosado of Sangiovese to a port-style dessert wine, you can personalize your tasting experience to your established tastes - or you can embrace the adventure and romance of the opportunity and try some new things, like the Vermentino or Aglianico, two of my favorites from a late December 2016 visit. Maybe it will inspire you to check out other Italian wine specialists in California, like Unti, Giornata, or Palmina. Or plan your next big vacation tasting wine in Italy. Either way, you are not likely to leave Gianelli disappointed! Highly recommended for California wine lovers who are looking for something new in a very scenic and historic part of Gold Country within easy reach of Yosemite National Park and nearby Sierra Nevada ski resorts. read more

One of my all time favorite shows on California public television was Huell Howser's travel and adventure series, "Californa's Gold." I found it corny at first, but Huell's larger than life personality, offbeat sense of humor, and enormous love for the people and landscapes of the Golden State gradually grew on me, so I was genuinely saddened when he passed away several years ago. But I still watch episodes from time to time on the Internet. Well, the late Mr. Howser once visited with the owners of Gianelli during a memorable Gold Country episode, and he was "fascinated" (a popular word with him) with the bold idea of growing Italian grape varietals in Toulumne County, and while Huell wasn't a wine expert, he did appreciate people and places that were special, historical, and fun to visit. Gianelli's beautiful and well-decorated tasting room in sleepy little downtown Jamestown is indeed a fun place to pay a visit. It is much smaller than nearby Murphys, and even by Gold Country standards, it's a laid back place to try great wine. For a $5 fee, you can choose 5-6 wines on the extensive list to sample, or if you come with a friend, you can mix and match and get a wider range of wine choices, as the pours are sufficient for a little bit of sharing. I really enjoyed the Fiano, Pinot Grigio, and Vermentino white wines on the menu, along with the rosé of Sangiovese, and among the reds the standouts were the Aglianico, the Nebbiolo, and the Barbera. These wines, especially the reds, were high in alcohol, often 15%, but they were released only after several years of barrel and bottle aging, which rendered them more approachable and enjoyable, with noticeable aromatics and long finishes, definitely wines to be sipped slowly or served with good food. The only other places in California that make comparable Italian-inspired wines using these varietals are Giornata in Templeton, Unti in the Dry Creek Valley, and Palmina in Lompoc. The whites were crisp and refreshing and could be enjoyed on their own or with a suitable food pairing. Prices per bottle are quite good for the quality, mostly in the $20 range with some lower and a few reserve wines higher (such as the Montepulciano), and your tasting fee can be waived with a one bottle per taster purchase. We easily found more than 2 wines we really liked, and we appreciated the hands-off, but friendly tasting room atmosphere, which invited us to linger over the wines without being rushed. Keep a visit to Gianelli in mind the next time your own adventures take you through the historic streets of Jamestown! read more

Stopped by this tasting room on the way to Twain Harte and was impressed! As soon as I entered I was greeted by friendly staff and a beautiful tasting room. The wine was great, the tastings were well priced, and the people and locals were friendly and fun to talk to. The staff was really knowledgeable about their wines and gave good recommendations for food and points of interest in the area. Bought a few bottles as gifts for friends and to myself and it didn't break my bank. This is truly a hidden gem and I'll be sure to make a pit stop every time I head up the mountain! read more
