Talk about customer service! I am definitely not a fisher but went in for a Christmas present for my dad. I needed some flies, a small fly box and to stay within our family Christmas budget. The guy that helped me was AMAZING! I wish I got his name because he was super friendly, knowledgeable and all around exactly what I wanted/needed when I went in with no clue as to what I was going to buy. We went with guide, Mike Anderson, to fish the Truckee. Although we are locals, Mike taught us about the river, fish, fly fishing techniques, and knots. Reno fly shop is my to go place. I would normally shop at cabelas or scheels. I went to Reno fly shop one day and continued to shop there for almost two years now. They definitely take their time to explain any product that you need. I've learned to fly fish through them. I'd spent hundreds of dollars at other stores trying to learn and with them they would explain to me what to do, what type of fly what rod and what part of the truckee to fish they do not pressure you to buy anything. Reno Fly Shop is a great shop! We went in there for a quick stop to look around and was pleasantly surprised. We were just driving through and saw the shop. They have everything you would need for fly fishing. They have dry flys, nymph fly, rods, reels, float tubes, waders, etc. The shop is conveniently located close to the Truckee River so you can have quick assess to the river once you get set up. After that you need a bit of luck to catch a fish. I know I need it the most haha. I fish but man do I need all the luck I can get haha. These guys should sell bags of luck because I would buy a crap load. Anyways, enough about that. This is a great shop to hangout at and the staff are friendly. They seem like they would help you out if you really need help. I know one thing about fly fishing is that there is a lot to know and man I am clueless. I have had the pleasure of having master class fly fisher men to teach me a thing or two. What I learn from those classes is that I just scratched the surface. But each area and each fish you have fishing for will need a different set up. It's all about taking the time to listen to their knowledge and applying. Then a few bags of luck haha. Attending a conference in Reno and had to stop by- looking in every fly shop you come upon is part of being a fly fisherman. Jim and the Reno Fly Shop does not disappoint! Besides hosting a wonderful podcast and hosting various social events with industry experts, this place is legit. I was interested in a specific rod/line and guess what? They had everything in stock. What's more, they have fished this rod in various conditions and had great insight into the way things behave. Much more insight than typical shops that have various products that nobody knows anything about. I was happy to take all I did off their hands. This is a great example of how you compete in the internet era- great service and detailed insight. Could I have got everything cheaper? I came into the shop before Christmas last year. It was a Thursday around 4:15 pm, I went right after work thinking this would be a slower time in the shop. My wife wants to start fly fishing when we go backpacking so I thought I would go to the local experts. I walked into the shop where the one employee was talking with a customer. I wondered around the shop for 10 minutes checking out the fishing equipment. During this time the customer and the one employee proceed to BS. The employee never said hello or can I help you find anything. Kind of a bummer since I was in the market for a full setup for my wife. Luckily there is a larger non-local store very close that has amazing customer service. I bought her a rod/reel and all the accessories. Getting people to walk into your store is half the battle, at least make them feel like you want their business. read more

So I decided one day that I should take up fly fishing, which is all well and good except for the fact that I have exactly zero experience as a fly fisherman. Fortunately for me, I stumbled upon Reno Fly Shop just down the road from my office. The guys there told me about the 4-part fly fishing class that they teach on Tuesdays and Thursdays over a two week period. What a great class! The instructor, Mike, was knowledgable, friendly, and accommodating of all the students different learning styles. By the end of the class, we were able to set up our rods and reels, tie on various flies, and we were successfully landing trout and whitefish in the Truckee River just blocks away from the store! After the class, Mike and the store owner, Jim, helped me pick out the perfect rod and reel for me, even special ordering one that I wanted that wasn't in stock. You won't find the sort of personalized attention and generally great attitude that the guys at Reno Fly Shop offer anywhere else. They've got my business! read more

Today My aunt and I had a private lesson on fly fishing basics at the Reno Fly Shop. Because there is so much technique involved in this sport we wanted to get some basics down before fishing. The instructor Jason did a great job! In the shop we learned fundamentals about the rods, reels, lines, flies, and important accessories. We then went to a park and got a hands on tutorial on casting as well as knot tying and setting up the rig, and some very key tips about where to find fish and how to bring them in once they're on the line. Jason was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and professional. We also appreciated that he took all of the questions we cast his way. When practicing casting he was paying attention and giving us personalized pointers. At the end we felt we had received the training needed to hit the river. I'd highly recommend this for any beginners like myself who want to get the fundamentals to get started on the right foot. read more

This is the only place to go. I've been fly fishing the Truckee for a long time and I stopped in one day earlier this summer. The staff is incredibly helpful with any set up you need/flies/tips. I'm still blown away every time I go in there at how willing these guys are to share their advice. Any of the other places in Reno treat you like they know everything and you are just a wallet. Jim, the owner, obviously just wants you to get on the water and catch fish - what more could you want? A really good fly shop. Has a good selection of things. From the elite like Sage, Hatch, Abel and Hardy, to stuff everyday people (like me!) can actually afford, like Redington, Echo, and others. If by chance they don't have something you're after, they can pretty much order anything you need and have it there in 24-48 hours. Jim is also great. I love fishing Pyramid Lake and it's hard to get the right flies if you are not local. I tie some myself but some it's better just to buy. So, I called Reno Fly Shop and asked them for a report on the lake which they gave me. I also mentioned that I would be coming in to town to late to stop by the shop to pick up flies so I asked if there was any way they could get some to me before I left for the lake early the next morning. The person on the phone said that they could deliver them to my hotel and I could pick them up when I checked in. We discussed which flies I wanted and I told them and we discussed colors and such. They took payment over the phone. So, I drove with friends to Reno after bay area traffic which means we got in around midnight. As I was checking in to the hotel, the desk worker had my package with my flies. I was very thankful to get the flies so I could leave on time the next morning. Also, the report they gave me on the lake turned out to be spot on. Over two days my two friends and I caught over 40 fish! THANKS RENO FLY SHOP!!! :-) read more

Wow.. such a great experience! Called a week ago for some "out-of-town" guidance on fly selection and area waters for a Tahoe visit that's not really a dedicated fish trip... Just looking to play a bit while in the area. Got Terry on the phone and he couldn't have been more patient or helpful. I Never felt like I was holding him back from other things or the traditional hurry.. hurry.. and just stop in the shop when you're up. Because of that experience I had the thought that maybe spending 4 morning hours with a guide would be a good start rather than my plan of trial & error given our short visit. Called back today to discuss and fortunate enough got Terry again. Same experience.. No pressure and a feeling of authentic transparency. Hadn't called with an intention to book the time but I did and am sure I will not regret it. Down to earth.. transparent.. a guy I feel like I'd enjoy spending a morning on the river with... was a pretty easy decision. I asked him but, Terry doesn't guide. One represents all, and I'm looking forward to my morning on the river with another from Reno Fly Shop. I swear I never write these things... Horrible customer service, I called the shop looking for a specific item and was told it was in stock, I drove down from Truckee to purchase the item. When I got to the shop I was told that I could not purchase the item because it was the shop owners and that if I wanted one they'd have to special order it, that would of been very nice to know before I drive 45 min to come make a purchase. read more
