I…read moregot Linda to pull up right in front, grabbed RWBY (you can say Ruby) and was ready to enjoy the vend. We had a bunch of loose change. Why "loose?" Anyway, I was able to purchase three bottles of water before moving on to the snack-based machine. I'm gluten free (wheat gives me a stomach ache) so I was really happy to see a Health Bar. Chocolate. Toffee. English? Awesome. I put in my $1.25 (see exhibit 1 photo below for price corroboration) and pressed 5-0. The display (as evidenced in photo 2) demanded an additional $.50. And I was out of change, loose or otherwise. A moment of non-rest. Until I realized I could hit the cancel button, get my change back and use my iPhone -- moments later, snack in hand. Could have been five stars Hartford Rest Area. Sorry, got to keep you honest.

It was very clean, offered several snack options in the onsite vending machines, and the outside grounds were lovely. The poetry and prose inspired theme was apparent throughout the grounds from the picnic areas to the facilities building. There are several quotes from famous writers enshrined at the site and a variety of plaques with historic lessons--a little learning opportunity off the well-beaten I-80 path. Save yourself a visit to a filthy gas station bathroom and check out this inspired alternative instead. It's definitely worth it.

I'm sure most folks just rush in to use the toilets and don't notice. There is also free WiFi so you can use your phone or laptop, altho there is a time limit.

From covered picnic tables to places specially for your pets, this rest stop has a little bit of everything for everyone. There was someone even in a hammock just chillin' between two trees, perfectly unbothered. There was plenty of parking both for cars and trucks. There were also a ton of maps both state and local as well as various guides for food, attractions, and entertainment. We'll definitely be keeping this location in mind the next time we're heading to Iowa or on the same route.

I had 25 miles left in my tank and my gps kept telling me the closest gas station was 27 miles away. Are you kidding??? Oh thank goodness, it was kidding-- as I saw Pilot Travel Center's sign glowing ahead. Like a beacon of hope. Pricing was standard. There were a handful of fuel lanes, plethora of parking. And it boasts a Subway. I stood in below zero weather, got my gas and went. What a life saver-- never have I been so happy to have my gps be wrong!

And it wasn't far from the time when the 6 in Motel meant how much a night's stay cost. This place is still OK, but if I want safe, basic, and relatively cheap there are other choices within Greater Iowa City. I personally like the Iowa House near Campus, which also take me away from the Coralville Strip and into some Townie civilization.

Par for the course. Given my current lack of standards, the first thing I want is to roll my hog into a motel parking spot. It's that or passing out in a barn on a mound of hay with a bottle of whiskey hanging out the side of my mouth. Hey, this is Iowa! I actually try to satisfy the latter but nothing turns up. So, Motel 6 it is. Just as hoped, there's a parking spot directly in front of the door to our room. Good! Forget luxury, I embrace and salute this cross-country spirit! Who needs 400 thread count?! I make my triumphant entrance into our glorious room and I have an out of body experience drowning in a scent akin to air conditioning filtered through asshole. It's okay! This is perfect! Giles loves it. He tastes the toilet water. Delicious! Ferry loves it. "Just like the scene in No Country For Old Men! ...minus the shotgun... maybe." Cheap TV - check. Dirty carpet - check. Beer bottle opener attached to sink - check. Holy bible - check. Needless to say, everything checks out. It isn't until I lift the sheet when I realize I just can't. No! I won't sleep on these covers. I won't nuzzle into putrid polyester! I won't. Even still, I don't leave. I run to the car, grab my comforter and settle back into bed. As I survey the parking lot from my perch along the door frame, I smile with the slow realization that there are no cars older than 2000 to be seen. So it looks like each of our traveling companions may be in the same boat, nay, car as us. Hold that thought... that's a gunshot!
