Wow ! Found this store after staying 10'plis years in central NJ ! How did I miss this shop ! As the name says - it is a perfect shop for restaurant owners and anyone who wants to buy bulk items ! When I went first time , I got no help when I asked for membership etc . I almost shopped not knowing that I need a membership. The members in the billing counter didn't help and even the manager there . I came back later and found this shop had many more stuff including vegetables etc . Liked the price and we got few stuff . This is a serious business for serious restaurant buyers. You must be buying in bulk to get the price breaks. I have read several negative reviews posted by individuals who did not understand that this is a wholesale seller catering to restaurant owners/shoppers. There is limited customer service because the target shoppers here know what they have come for and are not browsing the aisles on a lark. Most shoppers here are laser focused on filling a list and getting back to their shops for prep time. To an average retail consumer this place is completely overwhelming and confusing. If you don't know the prices and what you are buying before you arrive don't go in, you will just be in the way. read more

The customer service is very poor and rude. I called to get information from the fresh fish department. The person who answered the phone answered as if she was at home/answering her personal phone (totally unprofessionally) and she didn't seem to understand my request (but she spoke very good English) handed the phone to another person as she mumbled something incoherently and that person asked me what I wanted said hold on and hang up on me. I called back twice more, was passed around again just to ultimately get the phone hung up on me each time. Every person I encountered in those calls (3 different girls, can't respectfully call them women) all were unprofessional, answered the phone like they were home and didn't even try to extend any sort of customer service. This store should be investigated, the management there should be investigated and probably changed and most of the front end/ customer service staff replaced. Makes no sense that this lack of respect is acceptable in a large company like this. read more

Restaurant Depot in South Plainfield New Jersey should be the best store on earth but it's not. They have a large store with private parking and some even under cover. They provide U-boat style narrow carts to help you negotiate the isles in their warehouse setting. They cater to restaurants and charities more than other big box stores. They masquerade as a wholesaler but their prices aren't that great and they require a free membership or guest pass to shop there. The good is that they have massive quantities of food and almost every imaginable item needed for food service including advertising, management, storage and cleaning. They have recently opened an express lane at check out which is helpful. The bad list is longer. You need to dodge forklifts which are moving pallets of goods every minute that the depot is open. Most shoppers are running a kitchen and are in a hurry and rude. My biggest peeve is you can never find anything they advertise in their monthly flyer. Even if they have it in stock it isn't separated or marked with a special tag. You must check the SKU numbers of the item on the shelf to the item in the flyer or you're screwed. I went on Feb 1st with the intention of buying Tri tip roasts which are scarce in my region and some shrimp, both on sale in the Feb flyer. The worker in the meat department checked for me and could not find any tri tips. I spoke to the woman at the desk and she said 70 lbs are due in on 2/7. Why the hell would you advertise a two week special on an item and allow it to show up a week late? When it came to the shrimp I could only find a full case of the sale shrimp in the freezer. I asked the young lady in the fish department if I could break the case. She pointed to a bag and said these are the sale ones. I got to the front end and they rang up $1.50 higher. Thanks for the help, dumb ass. People who shop at Restaurant Depot are trying to resell at profit or are trying to run their non-profit on a budget. Price matters, time matters and with all the frustrations I can do just as well at Costco, Sams or BJs. Save yourself frustration and shop elsewhere. read more

After Shopping around this store, I get to the register to cash out. They asked me for a Restaurant Depot Card. Since I am totally new, I didn't have one. They informed me I had to go to Customer Service Desk. I go to the Customer Service Desk to Apply for one. The girl behind the desk asks me if I have a Tax ID number. I respond, Yes. Then she asks in do I have it with me, I respond with Yes. In Paper format, I respond No, I have it on my phone in pdf format. I can email it to you. This company does not have email. What kind of establishment does not have email? So the next customer comes up and it's the same issue. No one carries their Tax ID in paper format at all times. No temporary card can be issued. The other customer and I have driven 40 minutes each to get her and now I have to travel back home and come again because they don't have an email. Email is free. I am sure you must lose a lot of customers because I ended up leaving and not coming back. I made my purchases at another location, Not Restuarant Depot, and paid the same or lower prices. I found no savings, except the one item was about $2 cheaper than BJ's. I much rather shop else where anyway, Pallets all over the place, the place looked like a sty. Get your act together. Your store is just a waist of time not having an easier process to obtain a card. read more

Customer service is so horrible. I am usually not a review person but this time I have to. My whole family have been coming here and spending a lot of money, but for this kind of customer service, not worthy. Everyone, please make sure ask the cashiers if you're not sure about certain items' prices before insert your credit card, otherwise you'll get in trouble with them. They will try to give you hard time, make you move back and forth from cashier to front desk and then back to cashier again, a waste of time, just for a piece of cake thing they could've fixed. read more

Check your receipts carefully before leaving! They charged me $165 for a box of 32 burgers which should have been $27. Had to go back and the CSR was totally aware of this happening before. This has also happened to my friends when they purchased burgers. Watch out for the scam. they know it happens all the time And they aren't even fixing this!! read more

Management could not accommodate me on splitting a receipt. They rudely told me to pay for the 1st half then get back in line and pay for the rest of it. Manager came and did not help at all either. All I had was 1 simple request! Where else can you go to get 100 pounds of your favorite foods? I do not have a restaurant but will go every so often to stock up on a few things. The store is nothing fancy and can get quite congested. Bring a jacket, even in the summer! The walk in freezer section is enormous and it obviously very cold. Okay prices, a bit lower than Costco, but RD sells mostly "diner quality" items, especially chicken and fish. Exceptions are Angus beef, Callebaut chocolate bricks, Plugra butter and select few other items. No organic foodstuffs that I could find, no wheat pastas, etc, just the basics you would find in small family-owned eateries and diners. RD is targeted at second or third rate restaurants who are trying to keep food costs low without much regard for quality. TD doesn't cater to a discriminating palate, so if you're a foodie looking for higher volumes of ingredients, stay away and go to Costco. Store brand (Chef's Choice) is very low quality, indeed. You'd never catch a really good chef shopping here. Employees are helpful, esp in meat and fish departments, but underpaid and working conditions are lousy (really cold, etc). Lines are long and generally there are stupidly annoying wait times and just as annoying cashiers who have zero energy or career ambition. Note: Fresh fish is delivered only early in the week, so by Wednesday there are no cases of fresh fish remaining, esp salmon. read more

Large selection. Good prices. Very large produce selection. Selection is much larger than Costco with slightly better prices. I was amazed at some of the items they have. The produce section is off to the side and easily missed. Same with meats and cheeses (all in a very large walk in fridge bigger than many supermarkets). Biggest complaint are the u-boat carts and checkout. Carts are the large flat platform carts without sides and unless you buy everything in cases, things tend to fall off because there are no sides and the "ride" is rough. Checkout takes a long time since everything is checked on the cart rather than on a belt. The cashier must move around the cart, move boxes, and mark everything with a marker to make sure they got everything. Then, there's another checker by the door who goes through the receipt item-by-item again. Another issue are the employees rushing around in fork lifts. They zoom by with what seems like little regard to the shoppers. Be ready to jump out of the way. I've had my cart banged a few times by these drivers. read more

I mean....what's NOT to love about Restaurant Depot? They always have what I need and when I say "what I need" I mean "two thousand times the amount of what I need". But that's the whole point. This is quite an upgrade from the yucky old depot around the corner from where they moved off Plainfield Ave. It's the shiny bright new Restaurant Depot. Please have more stainless steel pans. Aluminum is horrifying and teflon is useless to me. It's all about stainless steel now you guys. Also microplanes. I'm still forced to buy mine from Sur Le Table. The ones without handles please. The ones that have handles are stupid and ginger gets all sorts of stuck in there and the dishwasher is either me or someone I love so we need the nice straight no handle microplane. Thanks Love You! I only go here when I'm forced to. The employees are the nastiest humans on earth. Speeding around on there fork lifts almost killing people with the forks. And if you do happen to pass by an employee when they are moving they will get mad and give you a snarky stare and comment. I do not recommend going to this location. read more

PROS: Selection is wide, location is convenient. that is all. CONS: Management is at its worst. Work force seems to be miserable and not attentive at all. Some, including what they call managers, are actually nasty to customers who happened to be mostly business owners or managers/ chefs. Fork lift operators are careless and can be provocative and dangerous at times. They have little or no regards for shoppers safety. Cashier lines are long and most cashiers seem to hate their jobs. Smiles are totally absent from this place. If and when a competitor comes around, one would see a mass exodus from RD because making the trip there twice a week is a stressful experience because of that culture of this company. I would be the first to say ADIOS.They should send their managers to start at cashier level in Costco so they can learn customer service from the bottom up. Managers task is not only to insure the shelves are full. Their priority should and must be "happy shoppers". Otherwise, eventually their shelves will not need to be restocked.
