This place was incredibly cheeks. My father and I came here, and since we are required to each get a full meal, got double the regular portion of fondue in a single pot. We also got extra potatoes to go along with it. First of all, the fondue was regularly portioned. It was the most normal pot of fondue I've ever had. Second of all, the potatoes were teensy. Two BABY potatoes for the two of us, not even regulary sized. Finally, it tasted so buns. The first bite was fine. The second was meh. The third was slightly nauseating. The fourth? That's when I felt the need to vomit. Still, because of the heaping price, I marched forward and ate...until I just couldn't. One more bite and I would've genuinely vomitted. Looks can be deceiving at this restaurant.since the sign in front of this restaurant was "Welcome" in German Ordered verbally a Ravioli dish (without identifying or pointing at any specific item on the menu) and was given a Pizza Ravioli item When asking the server about my confusion, stated that she didn't have to say anything because pizza was written on the menu and abruptly left. When I asked for a box for both dishes, she asked me twice whether I wanted a box for the second item that promoted me to look directly at her to repeat my request clearly. Makes one wonder why she didn't ask me if I was aware that the "RAVIOLI" dish I verbally ordered was really a pizza. Note: I ordered a simple Italian dish that was expected to be quick and hard to misunderstand. Four of us visited this restaurant for drinks/late lunch. We all ordered drinks, and when we went to order food (we were ordering three entrees, and the fourth person was planning to share the (large) pizzas being ordered), we were informed that *everyone* was required to order his/her *own* entree. On the first page of the menu, down at the very bottom, this rule was explained. Sorry I didn't read every page on the whole menu including the RULES . So our fourth person ordered the least expensive entree on the menu - an 18 chf plate of lettuce (literally not a salad - a small plate of lettuce)! Great ambiance in this old world style restaurant on the busiest street in this ski town. However some practices leave something to be desired. Our tour manager had said that this place had the best pizza in town. So sat down and ordered a CHF24 ($26 US) Hawaiian pizza for the two of us. Waiter comes over and says that the restaurant policy is that each person must order an entrée. You can't order a $26 13" pizza alone for two. Now this was after I found out they don't serve free tap water. You want water, you have to pay CHF5 ($5.35 US) for a 0.5 liter of mineral water. We end up ordering a small CHF19 ($21 US) Hawaiian pizza, and a CHF28 Rosti Wailliserkanne. Service is excellent, and ambiance could not be better, with uniformed waiters, candle lit tables and shining utensils, beautiful old style Swiss chalet décor, and white cloth napkins. Short wait for our dishes. The 9" pizza is more than enough for me, as it has a very thick delicious crust, with the usual pineapple and ham. The Rosti Wailliserkanne is a baked cheese dish, with mushrooms, diced tomatoes, bacon and string potatoes drowning inside, covered by an over easy egg. My wife loves it, but it's too heavy for her to finish, and I'm overdosed with swiss cheese dishes in the previous week. Going to have to think twice about ordering pizza from this place again. And no microwaves in swiss hotels to heat up the leftover pizzas! read more

First and foremost if someone in your party is not hungry, do not eat here. They do not warn you up front and let you order drinks. Only once you order food do they inform you of this fact that a drink and MAIN dish is required. This is very misleading and frankly tacky. We had a group of four and they forced us to buy a salad for 20 that was not wanted just so everyone else could eat. Worse they let a German speaking table next to us skirt the rules and order less. Terrible look. Past that it is nothing special, and things as simple as butter for bread is not available. What a charmer this turned out to be! After spending the morning skiing the Swiss Alps, my hubs and I were in search of some good eats to recharge. We found this to be quite the cute, quaint and cozy place! The space is rustic and chic. Featuring high wooden beams, it feels authentic and down to earth. We decided to start with a meat and cheese platter, including pickled onions, prosciutto and mozzarella. Sooo good! For our entrées, My hubs opted for the Kalbsbratwurst, featuring a veal sausage covered in a sautéed onion sauce with a hash brown potato cake on the side. I decided to try a hash brown potato cake, topped with mushrooms, bacon bites, eggs over easy, tomato slices, and mozzarella. Both were incredible! Seasoned perfectly, and with fresh ingredients, we devoured our meals! Location is prime! Situated on the Main Street in Zermatt, from outside the restaurant you can view the Matterhorn. Also surrounded by multiple shops, it's a fun street to be located on. Giving off all good vibes, this is one place to check out! read more

We had just arrived and my friend was hungry but I had a late lunch and wanted to enjoy a glass of wine with her. We ordered 2 wines and a tonic water and then my friend ordered the fondue. It was one of our last few days in Switzerland, and we still hadn't had any cheese fondue yet. We were looking for a place that served fondue late (which wasn't very many), and happened upon Restaurant Walliserkanne. It was around 9:30, but there were still a few tables dining at that time. We didn't want to do the all you can eat fondue, so we just went with the regular fondue, which comes with cubed bread. We also ordered a pork tenderloin on the side, so that we could dip this in the fondue as well. The pork had a nice flavor to it, but it was a little dry. However, slicing it thinly and dipping it into the melted cheese definitely helped. If you're in Zermatt, and you're looking for a place that serves late, and has great beer, Walliserkanne is a great option! read more

4 of us went to this restaurant and 3 of us ordered food and I ordered a drink as I did not want to eat. First they said they do not accept cards only cash. They had the No card rule printed in big visible signs all over and you could not miss. Then, the server came back and told me that every person at a table HAS to order a dish. He told us that those were the rules and a drink, which also was over 10 chf, was not enough. He said the rules are in the menu !!! Sure, so we all have to remember to read the rules in a menu instead of ordering. The server kept telling us that those were his boss's rules. Finally when I insisted on not eating he came back twice to push me again. The server was a guy with a name starting with as S. My advice, avoid this restaurant. Our party of 4 stopped here for lunch on July 20. We ordered a round of drinks and looked over the menu. My wife and I decided to share a medium pizza. We were then informed that sharing is not allowed, and everyone has to order their own meal (the server waved the menu in my face to show me a small notice to this effect at the bottom of one page). I did not want an entire pizza all to myself, so I said that I would just sit with the rest of my party and drink my beer. I was told that this also is not allowed. I then elected to down my beer and left in a huff, though the rest of my party did stay to eat their 3 pizzas. It wasn't like I didn't buy anything...I bought an expensive beer and probably would have bought another, if given the chance. Still makes me angry, even a week later. The outdoor dining and fire urns were what attracted us to the place. It was fun and warm to sit out, eat fondue, drink coffee and watch people. They have a 2 things to note. If you are eating dinner everyone must order a plate. It's also cash only. The plates can be a salad or small pizza. We rolled with it and the amount of food we ended up with was perfect. I can't remember going to a restaurant and having a worse experience. To start with we walked in and they seemed pleasant enough however the host and waiter spoke in German. When we responded in English the waiter's mood changed instantly. After giving us the menus the waiter came by a short time later. Asked if we were ready and as my partner was going to ask a question, the waiter just walked away. He finally can back 10 minutes later. Food was delivered promptly and was marginal. Nothing special. The waiter, who did speak English, dropped the food off and did not say a word. After the meal he picked up the plates and did not say a word. Interestingly enough, he asked the table next to us full of Germans how everything was, did they want dessert, etc. Finally I asked for a check and he got visibly upset. He came with the check swearing at me in German. Threw me the bill to sign. Grabbed the receipt and then just threw the copy at me sweating in German the entire time. I would strongly suggest not supporting this restaurant if you are a non German speaker. Just look at the other reviews. All the negative reviews are from a English, French, etc speaker. Ate here on a Sunday night with my sister, was nice we didn't need a reservation since we'd just arrived earlier in the day. Our server was obviously not a fan of Americans despite our being well dressed and polite, he was the stereotypical snob rude that tries to make you feel so privileged to be paying them money. The general manager was much nicer, came over a few times to see how we were doing. We ordered salads and a fondue, salads came out quite quickly and were tasty. Though right when we got them our server said our fondue was ready whenever we were so we scarfed them down. And then waited 30 minutes for our fondue to arrive. It was okay, not the best I've ever had but still good. Very heavy on the bread, not much fruit or potatoes offered. So I wouldn't suggest this place as a top choice, but you could do worse. read more

We were a party of six on a Saturday night, and we didn't have a reservation anywhere. Not wanting to spend too much time walking all around the city being turned away from restaurants, we headed here, as it was on the main drag, and we thought we would have a decent chance and getting a table walking in off the street. Though the place was pretty full when we arrived, they were able to seat us upstairs in a booth. Having said that, this is the second time I've been to this restaurant, and I absolutely love the look and feel inside. It's a big place, but manages to feel intimate and cozy wherever you are thanks to the low lighting, the rustic decor and the layout. It's usually full, but never feels too noisy or intrusive. For atmosphere, it's just right. With regards to the food, however, there's not a whole lot to say. The menu tries to cater to everyone, with a list of all the standard hits--fondues, röstis, sausages, pasta dishes, pizzas, even thai curry and steak tartare. I've tried lots from the menu--it's all minimally what you would expect (good), though nothing really stands out on its own. Prices are about average for Zermatt. Again, I really do love the look and feel of the place inside, so if you're not too fussy about the food and are looking for something easy that caters to everyone, it's a safe bet. read more

I was in Zermatt for the weekend -- my first trip to Switzerland! We popped in here with friends on their recommendation for "a big beer" and ordered a Margarita pizza to share. The beer was, indeed, big -- huge, in fact, but delicious! That's literally how we ordered it, too -- "I'll have a big beer". They delivered. The pizza crust was chewy and delicious, but thin and not overly crispy. The service was fine, appropriately Euro and not overly solicitous -- but friendly. We ate outside on the terrace and were treated to horses trotting past covered in jingle bells and a guy playing the alphorn below. Soooo good! This place was recommended by our hotel concierge. The portions are pretty big too so you may want to consider sharing. Staff is quite rude. Stopped in at early afternoon for a beer and wood fired pizza, but was told that you are not allowed to share plates. Just wanted to relax and have a light lunch before a hike. They would not allow that and would prefer that we just drink the beer we ordered and not serve us food. Everything was good with this restaurant until they charged us 3 Swiss franc for a glass of tap water. When we questioned the manager about this kind of charge for tap water, rather than demonstrating customer service, he argued with us. Then he brought in the server, who argued about what we had ordered. It would have been so simple to use his discretion to void the charge, instead it turned into an argument. We paid the bill, but very disappointing. Zermatt is definitely a tourist town, so if you have one unhappy customer, it's no big deal, there are plenty more. I've been in Zermatt for two weeks and have had the most beautiful , friendly , lovely service at al restaurants and shops until I went to this restaurant . On a Thursday, empty with very few people the waitress was rude and clearly did not like us from the second we sat down. She was sweet and friendly to the German speaking people at all other tables but to my daughter and I, just quick short answers no smile- nothing . I asked for plain tap water and was charged 5 francs. I told the manager I only wanted tap water and he said on the menu it says we do not give tap water out. I explained the waitress did not tell me and then the OWNER came out almost yelling at me picking up the card telling me " here , it's right here to see " the waitress said I did not ask for tap water . I still had on my table and said can you please remove from bill I did not understand . He said no way would he take off , I should have read the card . This young mean owner was so concerned about his 5 francs that he had no kindness in saying oh It was misunderstanding . So mean and rude . I know service in America is different but zermatt has been amazing this place was horrible .. :-( sad my daughter 6 ) left in tears because he was so mean ! We kindly asked if they could either turn it down or change it to a more Swiss-Style kind of music. They refused.
