Francesinha-a late night food Breaded chicken, steak, sausage, ham, bread, covered in cheese, topped with a beer sauce.

Eat here! Locals eat here, especially late in the evening. A diner feel, but amazing food.

    Francesinha with fries and egg

If you do want to try the Francesinha while you're in Port, this is where you'd want to go. The sandwich was derived from the Croque Monsieur except that it's heavier and has a tangy Gravy and comes with fries. Made with bread, beef, sausage and topped with heavy cheese and usually an egg with sunny side up and surrounded by fries and gravy this sandwich feels like hang over food. You can specify if you don't want the sausage or the fries or the egg etc. Don't think I'd want to have it again ever but definitely worth a try once. We went to this place around 8:30 on a Saturday and for a party of four we waited fifteen minutes tops. Large family friendly place with good turn over. There are other things on the menu but everyone there was ordering this sandwich. And this please seems to be popular with the locals for sure. For four sandwiches two beers and three lemonades our bill was €56.

It's just steps away from Hotel Tuela and this was a great choice for hungry travellers. Our first time in Porto, Portugal and first thing we did was search for good restaurants in the area. Google has over 3000 reviews of this restaurant. Thought will give it a try on our first lunch in the city. First thing I noticed was all empty tables have baskets of different buns and little packets of cheese spread and butter. Guess it is a very busy place that they have the bread baskets ready while you wait for your order. The waiter was very helpful and suggested grilled corvina fish. Also we had grilled calamari with sides of boiled potatoes and a plate of steamed green kale. I have never seen so much potatoes served in every dish. It was a total waste that we didn't finish all the potatoes. I'm not sure if locals actually finish them all. Both dishes are very good. Seasoned only with salt then grilled. They're simple dishes. But I'll make sure that I tell them not to give us so much potatoes in our next order. Will definitely come back here. Yes we did come back again! This time putting 5 stars instead of 4!

Serving up some classics here. Had the francesinha batat or something like that, was filling and delightful! The wifey had the Esparguete a Bolanhesa & liked it, not her favesies but she's prego so she wanted to play it safe. We both enjoyed the beer, wifey took a sip and was tasty too for less than 3 euros, felt like I robbed them! LOL

A Francesinha (a.k.a. Little Frenchie) is an amazing and brilliant creation. We're talking about a sandwich filled with wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage and steak, smothered with cheese on top plus an optional sunny side up fried egg and soaked in a hot thick tomato beer sauce surrounded with an army of fries. Right?! To me, this is the perfect sandwich. After experiencing the glory that this fork and knife sandwich is, I'm genuinely dumbfounded as to why the concept hasn't been exported worldwide. Then again, I also like that Porto (its birthplace) and some near by towns are apparently the only places to find one. Within Porto, it is well known that many locals are highly passionate and strongly opinionated about which place does the "best" Francesinha. After you've had a few, you can tell there is a clear difference in craft and quality from one place to another. I both went to a place that was highly reviewed and considered one of the top as well as another which I'd heard nothing about good or bad. Both were great, but for different reasons. Capa Negra II has the distinction of being the place where I tried my first Francesinha. I found them listed time and time again when seeking the creme de la creme. Thankfully, it did not disappoint. Freshness is vital with this sandwich. There is so much going on that the last thing you'd want is a Francesinha that's been sitting around for a few minutes before it gets to you. Capa Negra II does a great job in this regard as it was piping hot upon delivery and the bread still had some crunch to it. The layers of flavors and textures around and within the bread slices work together in exceptional unison. As far as the rest of the experience goes, the service lacks much to be desired, but ultimately you don't come here for the service. The atmosphere is not much to rave about either. There's not much personality to it, but it didn't really matter once the food arrived. I mean literally, the moment the sandwich arrived, I can't remember anything else other than eating it and my long, but blissful, walk home after. I hear the Portuense refrain from having more than one Francesinha a month. Considering the behemoth that it is, I think that's a sound plan and Capa Negra II, despite its drawbacks, is definitely one spot to find a great one.

Definitely recommend this spot for an authentic Portuguese meal. The restaurant was recommended to me by two locals and I'm so glad I walked that extra mile to make it out here. It was near their closing time so it was fairly empty, but we were seated immediately and service was rather quick. Got their speciality - Francesinha, which is basically the best hangover food in town. Two slices of bread layered with pork, sausage, bacon and topped with beef- it's covered with a cheesy gravy and a fried egg. Seriously can't get more heavy than that, but totally worth it!

Yep, for foreigners in Portugal, Francesinha is a must try. I went for it and I don't regret. The place was very crowded, so expect huge lines if you're not alone to get a spot on the "bar". Good food, super bock and reasonable prices

Working during diner time. With dust and debris flying all around near the dining tables... What a disapointment... Clients diserve better treatment. The food is regular and honest. With average quality.

This is a fantastic place to go for some real traditional Portuguese food, especially the famous Francesinha. Service is good but can take some time as it gets very busy! The Francesinha is quite big and delicious.

Love it with family or friends. Need to go early or plan to wait to get a seat. My favourite is the 'rosbife' and then 'quente e frio'.

Definitely recommend making a reservation, I found it impressive that the hostess's reservation system was essentially a notebook and pen in this digital age. We did not see much of our waiter, since the restaurant was extremely busy and filled up with diners. Standouts: 1. Razor clams - I'll always get these if I see it on the menu. Cooked in this incredible garlic sauce. 2. Fish and seafood cataplana - delicious, tomato-forward seafood stew; I liked the version that we had the night before more which came with rice and was more filling. But this was basically a never-ending bowl of fish, clams, mussels, and shrimp. Add to that the fact that the restaurant like most in Porto did not have A/C and I emerged feeling like I had been sitting in a sauna. Skipped dessert; I had my eye on the Weeel! froyo truck parked outside. One more nit - the metal chairs are not comfortable at all for sitting a long time in.

As I came in on my own I opted for the one open stool at the counter. The restaurant was busy on a Monday early evening, about 5:30-6:00 pm-ish, with what felt like mostly locals. They have a regular menu, a daily menu printed on the counter top, and they also do Take-Away. Their specialty is definitely their roasted chicken, which one can see cooking on spits at the entrance of the restatruant, conjuring such amazing smells that truly open up the appetite. The staff is sweet and did their best to serve me, with my English/Spanish and no Portugese self. Everything I ate was top-tier without being fancy. Simple and flavorful. I ordered a 1/2 chicken (way too much for me by myself) that came with batatas (french fries- which I didnt love), so I ordered a side of white rice and a salad, as well as what I would call a carafe of wine (it was definitely either two very healthy pours or 3 regular ones). All in all, I paid $15 euros, which I thought was a great value for all that I was given and how tasty everything was.

There were two other groups before us that were sat pretty quickly within 15 minutes or so. During the time we were waiting the hostess was extremely friendly and kept giving us updates on when the table was going to be ready and was making light conversation with us as we waited. When we finally got seated you could tell that the servers were definitely busy trying to get everyone's food and drinks out and so the same hostess came to us and said don't worry I'll take your order for you and told us the things that were the most popular which from my pictures we basically got everything she said LOL. And we were not disappointed with the food that we chose. Now we know why they are considered the house specialties. The flavors of the potato fish cheesy goodness dish I cannot remember the name of it was just so warm and comforting. I was worried about a fishiness coming through when you took different bites but no all the flavor is harmonized well with each other. The tuna salad that they made was extremely fresh and again was pleasantly surprised that though it was fish the spices and bread/butter combo that came with it really didn't give any fishiness. It was also well balanced. Now I will say though those other dishes were amazing our favorite hands down was definitely the grilled octopus. It was so tender and almost melt in your mouth. We were blown away by how well it was cooked. For sure I would say if you are in the area and have a good amount of time please check this spot out and give yourself at least 3 hours to enjoy the meal because again we sat there laughing eating and talking with the people around us because it was that fantastic of a Time for roughly 3 hours.

That's always a plus as we got to witness the buzzing crew efficiently feed the customers. We got 4 kinds of appetizers that our server recommended. They were all good but we liked the casserole baked dish the best. My wife and I shared a rice plate of the bifanas (spicy pork steak) with fries. For drinks, I got a bottled Compal juice while my wife got her afternoon macchiato. Our bill was a grand total of €17. I even corrected them as our bottle of water wasn't included in the chit. Presentation was amazing. The tuna itself paired with the ponzu sauce was quite good. There were other elements like trout roe and crispy chicken skin, but the portions were sparse and I felt like the sauce drowned out their contribution a bit. Still a great dish though. Would order again. My main dish was the Vitela (braised veal). While the menu ostensibly presents these items for two to share, they can make half-portions of certain items, of which the Vitela was one. The meat was wonderfully tender. Flavor was had a slight tinge of bitterness and saltiness that didn't quite agree with me. Good dish overall. Service was kind and engaging. Possibly a bit too fussy over me for my American sensibilities, but they were very nice. The server knowledgeable about wine pairings and helped me pick out some for the courses I ordered. A couple of very minor issues here and there, like spilling some wine when pouring the glass, stuff like that. Also, the server shook my hand coming and going. Nice gesture but all I could think of was germs. Bathroom: Single-occupancy, upscale and nice. Toilet seat wouldn't stay up though. All in all, at decent restaurant but like I said, I had a bunch of small complaints that just added up, and it says a lot that my favorite course was the bread course. I would not repeat personally, but I think it might be worth a try for those that really love what's on the menu.
