Wow, incredible! If you're in Porto, Postigo do Carvao has to be on your list. We were lucky enough to get a table without a reservation for dinner- and it was such a lovely evening. The ambience is relaxed and semi casual. Come with two or with a small group. Service was great, friendly, helpful and attentive. I had a wonderful meal that included Pratinho Polvo Vinegrette (6 e) a delicious appetizer with octopus in a vinaigrette sauce. Super tasty. Naco Especial de vitela (22.5 e) generous portions of tenderloin, made exactly to my liking medium rare. We also got the. Bacalhau com natas ( 16.5 e), A wonderful mixture of cod, fries, potatoes in a very delicious cream sauce. Overall, five star meal, I would definitely wanna come back here again. Excellent service! We walked in around 6pm on a Monday evening and got seated right away. We ordered the Pulvo appetizer which was delicious as well as Bacalhau com nata-it was a huge dish and so amazingly tasty. Like a cod macaroni and cheese dish! Our hotel recommended this place. Maybe because of proximity to hotel; literally next door, maybe they have a wink wink arrangement, maybe both. Who cares! Very authentic, rustic Portuguese cuisine, where you can take your time, soak in the vibe of Porto the smell of authentic coastal Portuguese fare while marveling at the efficiency, of a very small wait staff who effortlessly dance between tables with ease, experience and panache. I was pretty hungry but even though we shared an entree, we couldn't come close to finish what looked like an order for 10 people! The seafood stew, sorry forgot the name, was gynormous! Seriously... I don't have but one pot that big at home and anything in it would feed a family of 10! For my YEE pals in SF Bay Area to imagine Cioppino meets gumbo! Excellent restaurant tucked away on a small side street adjacent to the Douro River in Porto. Menu is a mix of traditional Portuguese food and other international cuisine. Quality of the food is very very good and portion size is quite large, especially considering the price, where you can easily split an entree between two people. For our first meal here we had a veal entrée, salmon entrée, steak entree and cod entree. All the entree's came with multiple sides of which some were traditional Portuguese sides. The food in all cases were well made, and very tasty. We're all four of us were quite happy with our meals. The restaurant itself has a traditional decor and is very comfortable. A great place to have a meal and enjoy the surrounding environment. The staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu as well. Overall an excellent upscale dining experience at a very reasonable cost. Everything from the service, ambience, to food makes this an amazing spot in Porto! Food: we ordered the meat pie, the Francesinha, and the chicken franga and everything was so delicious! The meat pie was more of a meat bread, that had a biscuit like quality! The Francesinha was extremely flavorful and large, I'd recommend getting 1 for like 3 people. My wife and I were here as part of a Gate1 tour, with lunch as part of an Optional River Cruise. Postigo do Carvã is close to the Douro River, with a lot of local specialty foods. Lots of appetizers. One entrée dish was cod with string potatoes. Another was crispy roast chicken. To me, it was fine, though the appetizers were yummy. Dessert was something similar to a Turimasu. We loved this place so much that we came back the next night because there were too many wonderful dishes to order. In the first night we ordered the lamb and the duck dishes. Both were fabulous and delicious. We saw others order a flaming chorizo that looked like such a fun dish to get but were too full. So we came back the next night and ordered the flaming chorizo and the grilled sea bass. Again, both delish. The staff, especially George and Silvia took great care of us. After having a wonderful Octopus dish across the river the night before, we decided to go back at it the following night. This spot was a hidden gem on the north side of the Rio Duoro nearby the waterfront. The servers were quite funny and the service spectacular. Pro tip - grabbing the first reservation of the night will save any headaches from waiting for a seat or for your food! The seafood stew with rice was incredibly tasty and filled to the brim with seafood, and the roasted octopus featured all kinds of potatoes and veggies as well. Very nice place that feels family style (although it is not really). We had fish roe salad as an appetizer and shared a code-potato dish. It was really big and really good. All in all the place feels like a real local experience with great food, which is not identical to all the usual touristy dishes. The service was friendly and attentive. Terrible experience. Our party of 6 arrived early for our 7:30 pm reservation, and it turns out they gave our table to the wrong party. The owner/manager seemed to think this was funny. There were no more tables available, so he took us upstairs to a "private room" that was hot and stuffy, with no ambience. Then they proceed to ignore us while seating the two other tables up there. After 15-20 minutes of no water, no drinks, no apology - we had to ask for service, and then the waiter acted offended. Incredibly awkward. One of our party went to speak to the manager and then the waiter turned passive-aggressive, acting overly sweet and then literally muttering under his breath as he turned to walk away. The service was so bad, I don't even remember the food. My advice - go anywhere else! read more

Excellent meal. Walk up past the tourist traps along the river and you will not only save money but have a tastier meal. We have nothing negative to say. Started with caldo verde and a green salad and sangria. Entrees were baked octopus (the best ever) and steak with mushroom sauce. Excellent. Chose the banana pudding for dessert and it did not disappoint....all this plus a bottle of water, a coffee and an after dinner drink fur 65 euros. Coming from the US, that's a bargain. Delicious food with excellent service! The restaurant has a romantic yet lively atmosphere with outstanding food. We came here is part of our tour and was served a 4 course meal! Needless to say we were beyond stuffed. For starters the brought olives, salad, sheep cheese, bread basket, a separate bread with different meats in it, another cheese, mushrooms, shrimp, and slices of chorizo! These was also wine and water on the table! We thought this was the meal! Then came the meal of veal chunks (could've used more flavor but was very tender), seafood stew (had mussels, shrimp, etc and was very tasty), and cod (seemed like a cod hash with potatoes and it was excellent)!! Next course was a kale and potato soup which was superb! And last was the dessert of what we thought was tiramisu. It was light, had the expresso flavor, and a nice touch at the end. They offered coffee to top everything off but I was maxed out at that point! All of the food was fantastic and the service was superb! I highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Culture difference: Remember to tell them to take away the appetizers that are on the table when you first arrive if you don't want them! Otherwise, it will be added to your bill for each item! This is not a scam, it is just how many restaurants in Portugal operate as part of everyday restaurant practice. If you don't have a reservation and want to eat here, come early! which is actually standard dinner time for americans. Great restaurant, ambiance, location and food! They were busy and running around, so expect a bit of wait if that is the case but that is the case anywhere! We really had fun with our waiter, what a great guy! I ordered the sardines and boiled potato because it just so happened to be sardine season and Portugal has very fresh seafood. The plate was priced at 9 Euros and came with 6 large sardines and boiled potatoes. It was so much food! Vegetarian option on the menu of mushroom and other veggies presented in all types of cooked manner - raw, grilled, salad, pickled. An semi-open kitchen, some old lamp posts stuck in the middle, a long line of various national flags along the stone wall, checkered table cloth, etc. The waiters were very down to earth and carried a good sense of humor. And of course we did but an hour into the meal, the waiter said, "Stay as long as you want, because the next party cancelled." This is the place to order traditional Portuguese dishes, such as caldo verde, which reminded my friend of what her mother used to make. I'm giving four stars because the food was really good and of great value - but the waiter forgot about us so I have to deduct. The conductor on our train from Guimaraes recommended this restaurant and it didn't disappoint. We were fortunate that someone no showed on their reservation which opened up a spot for us. True to the previous Yelp reviews, there was a basket of bread and bowl of olives on the table but that was ok. We started with an order of the house salad with asparagus- (very good) and the boiled shrimp. Skip the boiled shrimp- overcooked and dry. We were a party of three and for dinner had the octopus (excellent) , fried cod and roasted cod - (excellent as well). The portions were very large and came with potatoes and cabbage. I wished I had split the dish with my daughter as we left a complete dinner behind. The house wine (red) was very good . I would highly recommend this restaurant - but make sure you are hungry as the food is plentiful! read more
