They came with the cabbage slaw and salsa on the side, and wow -- they were delicious. Everything was made fresh on the spot, hot, and full of flavor. What a Disappointment -- Looks Better Than It Tastes…read more I came to Restaurante La Esquina Salvadoreña specifically to try the sampler platter, hoping to enjoy a variety of authentic Salvadoran flavors. Unfortunately, this ended up being my first and only visit. I'll start with the positive: the visual presentation was on point. The sampler looked appetizing when it arrived, but once I started eating, the flavor simply wasn't there. The pupusas mostly tasted like masa, with very little flavor coming through from the filling. The chicken pastelitos were also bland and seemed to be mostly masa with a small amount of shredded chicken. The yuca was served cold, and the homemade chicharrón was just okay. The highlight of the entire platter was definitely the empanadas. Those were on point--tasty, flavorful, and easily the best part of the meal. The biggest disappointment, however, was the ensalada drink. Ensalada is a common traditional Salvadoran drink, and I was expecting the familiar refreshing fruit flavors. I watched as it was prepared using a separate drink base and fruit that was being kept in another container, which were then mixed together. From the first sip, the drink tasted heavily of maracuyá rather than the pineapple and marañón flavors I normally associate with ensalada. To me, it tasted more like a maracuyá drink mixed with fruit conserva from a raspado than a traditional ensalada. Even worse, the fruit mixture tasted old and had a slimy texture. At that point, I couldn't continue drinking it and had to ask them to take it back. Overall, the presentation gave me high expectations, but unfortunately the food did not deliver on flavor. The empanadas were the one standout, but bland pupusas and pastelitos, cold yuca, average chicharrón, and especially the disappointing ensalada were enough for me. I came hoping for a satisfying Salvadoran meal and left disappointed. Based on this experience, this was my first and will be my last visit.

Food Quality The pupusas were delicious and fresh. They gave plenty of salsa and curtido, both of which were very good. The $2 deal applies to three flavors only: cheese, bean & cheese, and revueltas. Other flavors cost more, but it's still a great deal overall. Atmosphere The place is clean, nicely decorated, and cozy. There's a TV inside, a few tables, and she also sells small snacks. Service & Experience The lady was very kind and welcoming. I called ahead to place my order on Christmas Eve, and everything was ready. We took the pupusas to go, and the experience was smooth and pleasant.
