They are proud of their Yelp rating!

I picked this restaurant from the Yelp reviews. And I am glad I did. This is definitely not a fancy or romantic date. This is where you go when you are looking for a more authentic Mexican dining experience. They have a good selection of traditional items and the Coastal Mexican offerings. I wish I had more opportunities to sample some of the fish! My quesadilla was excellent, the chips were good and fresh, and the salad was surprisingly fresh and tasty. It is not fancy and the decor could use some updating, but it is still comfortable and pleasant. Check out the pictures; it is pretty plain. The service is good and pleasant. Finally, don't bring your checkbook. Cash or credit card only.

This place needs some work. "Salsa" tastes like they poured a V8 into a bowl and called it salsa. I'm a firm believer that the salsa is a pretty good indication of the food to come and sure enough my logic is once again correct. My girlfriend ordered the chilaquiles and I was brave and ordered the menudo. I kid you not, both entrees tasted just like the salsa. I get it, the red chile is universal and can be mixed and matched to cook other dishes but that only makes other things not so good. The chilaquiles were bland and the menudo was even worse. Perhaps the food wasn't suitable to my palate but I know I won't be going back.

Stopped at Restaurante la Carreta for lunch while driving down I-5. On a hot bright summer day, the inside was nice and cool and dark, exactly what we needed. Even though there was only one person working front of house, we sat down, ordered, and got our food within 15 minutes of pulling up. While we waited for lunch to come out, we were brought a bowl of chips (thick and crispy) and one little bowl of salsa each (which was excellent, since I ate all of mine and started on my bf's before we'd finished the chips). The salsa was smooth and thin, with a nice kick to it. I got the sopes plate with asada, and my bf got a wet burrito with asada inside and salsa verde. My lunch had two sopes, plus rice and beans, and my bf's burrito, I swear I've seen smaller newborns than that thing. The asada was chopped nice and small, about the size of the tomatoes also on top, and was flavorful and chewy. The sopes themselves were hot and crunchy. While both the rice and beans were good, next time I'd just get the sopes by themselves, since the whole plate was a LOT of food. My bf said his burrito was delicious, and the salsa verde was tangy and amazing, and somehow did not make the burrito soggy at all as they sometimes can be elsewhere. He was able to eat all of it except for the last fifth, before finally admitting defeat. The mountain of food we had came to about $16 and change, and there were clearly a lot of locals eating there on their lunch break (in fact the three women at the table next to us must have called ahead, since their food was out and waiting for them before they actually got there!). A good midway point to stop between SF and LA, as it's not too far off the highway, and basically a straight shot.

Went again... this time had the Huevos Rancheros. Perfect! Eggs were cooked "just runny", and covered with their house red sauce - just spicy enough. Delicious.

Superb Mexican food. Fresh tortillas and chips excellent salsa and great food all and all. It is an excellent stop for those long drives down the 5 and a great place to stretch out. Would highly recommend to anyone passing by.

This is the best Mexican restaurant in Avenal. Nothing mind blowing, but quality food, good horchata, and nice servers.

On our way to Morro my husband I were starving with our 2 year old. We had already passed…read moreeverything else, so we took a chance on this unassuming little place. Quiet sweet woman behind counter, simple interior. Hubby got Carne Asada Burrito, I got chicken burrito and we split chips to go. 1. Both meats had perfect *chefs kiss* flavor 2. Rice was on point and fresh and fluffy 3. Tortillas themselves were fresh 4. Chips were made on spot and handed to us warm 5. Salsa that comes with burritos is perfect accompaniment 6. Pico de Gallo that comes with chips is classic but they elevated it with roasted jalepenos. Overall, perfect roadside stop in your way to coast. Had to leave a review for this little place that deserves more business. It's legitmately SOLID! skip subway, and get the good stuff.

In California, quite often when I visit small towns, I like to sample the cuisine in the area,…read moreespecially Mexican dishes. I often ask locals of what is the best authentic Mexican restaurants and with the city of Avenal having a large Latino population, the area has a few Mexican restaurants. I decided to try Taqueria "La Piedad", a small restaurant that was a little crowded during lunch time. Most of the locals were watching the futbol (soccer game), while I quickly went in to see how things looked inside and it's your typical small town restaurant. No flashy decor, small town vibe (without looking to '80s). Just a place to order and get some food or place to site back and dine and the restaurant has a good number of offerings including burgers. But I was definitely not there for the burgers, I was there to check things out and so I went for a chicken burrito. Reasonably priced at $6.50. For the most part, the burrito was delicious, but felt that there was more rice than chicken but perhaps that was just me expecting too much. So, for the most part, a good balance of rice, beans and chicken with cilantro. The burrito was delicious but looking around me, patrons were not ordering the burritos, they were going for tostadas and tacos it seemed. But overall, the quick visit to Taqueria "La Piedad" was good and if you happen to be in the area, definitely a place worth trying.
