3rd location visit after Rego Park & Astoria and I like how MASSIVE the gyms are. It's a breath of fresh air compared to how condensed gyms like Puregym & Planet Fitness were when I was once a member of those establishments. I don't think I've complained about any machines that I couldn't find in any of the locations I've been to. My minor grievance if anything is that the free weights could be re-racked better but that's just my OCD triggering me because it's not like I've had any challenge finding my ideal weight to lift. I had a bit of problem finding the location at first but for those wondering where it is, it's pretty deep in the first floor of a parking lot and the size of the place took me by surprise. This gym was just ok, no frills and it was kind of convenient while in the area, but I'm no longer needing this membership since I'm leaving. I've been trying to cancel for a few days now. They don't make it easy. Unfortunately, you have to go in person and only a manager can do it. The manager wasn't there and the worker behind the counter gave me the manager hours. I took a picture. I came back after 5pm when I was assured a manager would be there, but when I came back they said there was no manager and I had to come back again in the morning. Why should I have to cancel with only a manager? It should be illegal to not be able to cancel online. After reading reviews I realize this is their ruse. This establishment should be ashamed of themselves for scamming innocent people. I'm not happy with this experience at all. I won't be coming back! The people in that gym are weird. They have a weird culture in there. They constantly keep trying to hit on my girlfriend there and her friend and then the regulars in there have no sense of respect for women one guy bitt my friend on the shoulder trying to hit on her. The staff is also super un helpful my friend forget there id and was waiting outside cause they didn't want us to have to drive all the way back and the staff wouldn't even let them use the restroom but they sure had no problem selling stuff to my friend without an id. Where do I start? I had a membership for over five(5) years here, and recently my payment was declined due to a stolen debit card. Not only do they have a debt collector call you right away like you are some sort of criminal, they won't even waive a $19.50 late payment fee for a customer who has made all of their monthly and annual payments in full and on time for half a decade. They have this guy named "Henry" working at this location, who thinks he's some sort of Jersey shore wannabe, thinking he can tough talk and bully customers over a phone. Trying to refrain from profanity, but finding it very difficult to do so. I will give credit - the manager "Alex" reached out to me via e-mail, and seemed very nice. She waived the late fee and even extended a free month, but at that point the damage has already been done. Why would I want to go to this gym with people like Henry working there? The gym made their decision to stand by their poor quality employee, and they will have to live with that decision. It sucks that I cannot go to the closest gym to my house because they decide to defend their employees, even when they are wrong. The day this individual is fired is the day I'll consider going back. There is right, and there is WRONG. Retro Fitness' employee was clearly WRONG in this matter, and has not suffered ANY consequences or accountability for his actions. Kind of disheartening that this place has recorded phone lines and records of the interaction between employee/customer, and still chooses to keep this person employed. read more

Strange location but a big space with a huge assortment of equipment and free weights. The place is clean. Paper towels seem to be refilled often, and there are enough spray bottles to wipe things down when you finish up. Good AC too. No water fountain because COVID but they should figure something out by providing something for hydration to refill your bottle. There's no excuse. They direct you to $3 waters instead. This place is never not crowded. Great hours, it's open til midnight on weekdays, but there will always be a crowd. Wait times aren't too bad unless you're waiting for dumbbells. Certain members hoard them and it's frustrating. The late hours makes it tolerable and they're the latest in the neighborhood. However, I will say that after working in gyms all throughout college, I've never met more rude members and staff workers than I have encountered here. Trust me when I say not one staff member here is friendly. Everyone makes it very clear that you're wasting their time. (Can't speak for the trainers, just gym staff.) Outside is a walkway for members to get into the parking lot from the street. Half of the nights, they don't wait until the gym closes to lock the gate on this path. You leave the gym at midnight and it will be locked, forcing you to walk around behind the building through a dark and empty parking lot with no visuals of the street. It's unsafe, especially for female members. That's my biggest problem and I wish they would do something about it. read more

Gave this gym a shot after being a long time member at Chelsea Piers Fitness because it is much closer to my house & I got tired of the traveling. I didn't really know what to expect but I realized rather quickly that I made a good call! I signed a Personal Training contract for 12 months with Marcus at the Glendale location - truly an amazing trainer! He's been very flexible with me & works around my schedule (I work in construction management so I'm only usually available after 6p). We created a workout plan based on my goals, and always switch up the exercises to keep it fun :) I highly recommend anyone looking for PT to ask for Marcus. Can't wait to see my progress at the end of the year! read more

The personal trainers Keith and Lisa have rescheduled my assesment appointment twice and once booked it for a whole diffrent location. They are running a promotion for people to take an assessment for a gift card. They cant honor the promotion because the trainers either have allegations or simply dont work. Just walked into the this gym to try it out as a guest with my partner but did not have my ID on me. I requested the manager and regional manager- Regina, if they can make one time exception. She stated that because corporate is coming down today, they cannot make any exception and that I can sign up for a membership instead without an ID as it's only $35. I told my partner that we can go try push fitness instead and Regina encouraged us to go to push fitness and sign up for a membership with them instead. My partner will be cancelling his membership. I hate this gym. Full of lies. Got tricked into a personal training membership. They offer you a free 30 min session then wait till after to try and get you to sign up. Manager told me I could cancel anytime. This must be the business truck because of course they do it after when you're out of breath and just want to go. I emailed and told her I can't afford it and I was later told I signed a 1 year contract even though again they used shady tactics to get me to do it. I also tried to cancel my membership which also says I can cancel anytime . I emailed as it said to do online but this branch said the only way to cancel is to come in and talk to a manager which is never there when you go in. Funny part is when I called a guy told me normally you can write in a cancellation via mail but it isn't working. How does that even Make sense. Don't get tricked into the personal training sessions, it's a waste . Same price as a private trainer anywhere else and you won't have to deal with people who are only worried about their commission and not actually trying to help you get in better health. She knows many different work outs to target evey muscle you would like to target. At the end of the day its up to you just how much you are willing to push yourself. This place consistently smells like someone forgot to take the trash out, or moldy or something rotten. The smell inside the gym is sooooo foul, as soon as you walk in, BAM stinky. There is also an extremely large male population here, it is not the kind of gym to go to if you want privacy. As a female it's slightly uncomfortable especially at peak hours. Been years since they successfully scammed 1k out of me and since then I've had multiple friends that weren't informed of the essential terms of the contract upon signing up. If you're thinking of signing up here, really think about this: the manager reads all these reviews and knows that people aren't being made aware of the one year commitment and losing a lot of money for it, yet the manager still doesn't tell his staff to go more in depth with the contract to prevent this from happening again, and he won't. BEWARE!!! There is a CRIMINAL on the loose in this gym! Someone clipped my lock off the locker and stole my wallet/cash inside. They left my jacket and keys. It's hard not to assume it was one of the employees since every gym has a bolt cutter in the facility in case they need to remove someone's lock. Who else would carry around a huge bolt cutter to the gym that is large enough to cut through thick metal? Maybe management shouldve checked who went in and out of the locker room as I suggested. Anyway - DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING VALUABLE INSIDE THE LOCKER EVEN IF ITS LOCKED! My biggest problem with this situation was how the management handled this incident. I was told that the owner or manager wasn't available. The employees all claimed that no one is authorized to check the surveillance cameras. I never got a call back from the owner or manager. No one seemed to care that this unfortunate incident happened in their gym. I am a customer that pays you every month to use your facilities. Couldn't a manager at least call to follow up on the questions i had and explain if you checked the cameras? Couldn't someone at least call me to show some type of concern and that i shouldn't cancel my membership? I never asked for compensation or any special treatment. I just wanted a simple follow up to see if they found anything or any info at the end of the day! I should be able to go to my gym comfortably without thinking in the back of my head that a criminal is still clipping people's locks off! I cancelled my membership and filed a police report. Been coming here for more than a year and I have zero complaints about it. It has a HUGE parking lot, even on a busy day like Monday @ 7PM, you'll never have to wait too long for a spot. People here are generally friendly, although some may have a problem re-racking the weights. But you see people like that in every gym, so who cares. I'm not a member of this gym, but I am a resident of the neighborhood who frequently has to pass by it. The outside of the gym along Otto Road is a filthy mess. Pre-COVID they used to make an effort to maintain the area around the facility, but I guess that has gone the way of the dodo. I would urge the management to be good neighbors and at least try to tidy up - what message are you sending to potential new members about the interior of your gym, when the approach to it is depressingly slummy? read more

If they would actually put in the stairs they were supposed to & have the kickboxing and yoga classes, I would be MUCH happier with this place. It's not the most pedestrian friendly place to get into. Another gripe is the brush all over the sidewalk on the side of the street where this place is before you get to their lighted path (which, again, stairs to the gym would be a trillion times better & the rep who signed us up for membership last fall told us they would be putting those in). The gym itself is pretty nice. A novice like me can actually work out on the machines since they have helpful, clear instructions for how to use them. Other customers I dealt with were polite & would move if you wanted to use a machine. I haven't had much staff interaction at this point but I have no complaints there. If you've got an iPod, you can hook it up to the treadmill & listen to music while you're on it. Rumor has it that they are expanding & adding more features here so once they do, I'll be even happier & likely to show up more often. In the meantime, my workout is always impacted by the fact that I have to do a 20 minute walk in some pedestrian unfriendly areas to get here & back. I really hope this place succeeds. read more

Pro -Parking -Child care -Movie theater room -Private room you can use if it's available Cons - Over crowded - Machines break and do not get repaired for months or maybe never - Due to over crowding you won't be able to get a machine - Once again overcrowding, during peek hours it's hard to navigate the gym and get your work out in because everything is taken or people are just too close to your work out space making it uncomfortable. I am aware the other gym closed down and Retro gained all their members, but they'll probably be losing all their older members. I can't imagine how the gym is going to look in January. read more

Great Sized Parking Lot, I love the front desk staff because they are always polite and upbeat, though intimidating at first site I have never had an issue working in with someone who was using a machine I wanted to use and everyone is generally cool there in my experiences. There are clearly peak hours for most gyms so of course if you are there between the hours of 6-8, you kinda have to expect it to be a little crowded so though I wish there was more equipment again, people are usually really cool about sharing if necessary! I want to add ... I am a fitness instructor and trainer and it's cool to be amongst people who have a serious focus about getting a solid workout in without bs'ing, wasting time or trying to showboat! For whatever reason this gym and especially this particular location seems to attract a solid no bs crowd and I that's what I like about this place the most I've been using this gym for a few years and it's still a favorite place of mine to work out so in short, no place is perfect but, this retro comes pretty close and that's definitely good enough for me, maybe we'll get a good workout together here one day!! read more

I will be leaving this gym next month but before I go here's an honest unbiased review of my experience at Retro Fitness (Glendale) 1. I have experienced the 5am 5pm/ 9am and 9pm workout and will say if you can swing a 5am workout you will enjoy this gym. There is ample parking and no one is sleeping at the equipment on their phones. People that show up early seem to be about their business and for that Retro gets 5 stars 2. Some of the management is very nice and accommodating. Other's especially the one in charge of the personal trainers (Keelin) give gyms a bad name. I have literally seen her stalking customers who train with a small group of friends and have their membership revoked due to (Outside training) When I can say without a doubt I've seen the same people train together at Richies and other gyms and they don't personal train. (Some people just like to train together) Mind you this has happened more than once and now I am being stared at when I always train alone. 1 Stars 3. By 9am the gym is crowded with the morning crew, the bathrooms are soiled and the machines are taken. There is no access to the personal training section around this time as well. The mats are wet and dirty & the customers aren't putting their weights back. Also there are people stretching on the turf (So you won't be able to use the ropes or sled push during this time) 1 stars 4. The movie room, when it works, is awesome! (5 stars) Overall gyms are supposed to be a place to clear you head and achieve your fitness goals. It sucks when the ego's of a few can ruin the entire experience for its members. This gym is completely fraudulent. They continued to charge my card even after my membership was over. I stopped going due to the sanitary conditions of the gym (they don't clean it and half the machines are broken) DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS GYM. UPDATE: I filed a complaint to the BBB which retro fitness has an F rating (no surprise there) and they of course, never responded. Additionally, they haven't responded to my emails nor does corporate respond to their emails. Completely laughable. read more

This gym was great with excellent staff when Henry was the manager there before it got one star from me with the new manager Victoria is horrible actually haven't been in the gym for awhile my app was not transferred to my new phone ,so I told her my name she refused to let me in to workout. So I downloaded the app I told her I needed my membership # which she refused to give and advised me that I just need to put my email. Which I complied and still was not able to get in a asked her if I'm active and current with my payment she replied yes , can I workout I'm pressed for time will make sure that app log in is taken care of another time she still refused to still let me workout with a nasty attitude these are the rules Sr. This is when I canceled my service will be going to another gym. I go to workout and relieve stress not get stressed out customer service is horrible and definitely no understanding of customer service unbelievable feel sorry for the owner. read more

Been a member of this gym for a number of years and very upset to see how things are becoming. 1. There is one member who due to his roid rage, screams, yells, curses at women, vapes in the bathroom amongst many other things. Members are concerned and uncomfortable and management/ownership still refuses to do anything about it. They have been saying this particular member has been warned, yet the scary and intimidating behavior still persists for two years! 2. Management does not do right by their employees. I do not even try to get to know the employees very long because they don't last long. Julio worked the mornings and was amazing. Management was constantly giving him a hard time and now he is gone. He was tremendous. 3. The owner... he is almost never there. I have left messages and never been called back. When I finally did see him to express my concerns about the gym and the aggressive member, the owner was more concerned about making his pre-workout drink, finding out how much sugar was in it and was literally walking away from me mid-conversation. He was very defensive throughout our brief conversation. 4. Many members look on the Facebook page for updates. If there is a snowstorm or a problem with opening the gym, no one is informed until they already arrived at the gym. 5. They recently renovated the gym and got new leg machines. However, they moved the chest benches and screwed them in unevenly. So, when you lift the bar, it comes off crooked. If you are lifting heavy weight you're in danger of being hurt. 6. Shakes, Protein Bars, Water... are way more expensive compared to other gyms, like Freeport specifically. The only saving grace is that they open at 4AM but they need to do a better job. read more

I have been a member at this gym for a few years and I have seen no reason to leave. This place has all the equipment necessary and them some. It is open and not to crowded, which is definitely not something I can say about all the retro fitness sites in queens. The parking lot is really big - I've never had a a problem finding parking here. The gym also has a deadlift area which is a really big luxury for a gym that is only $20/month. I do which they had some more benches that I could use with dumbbells. The workers over the few years have changed and I do miss the old workers who were a lot more approachable and amicable. Wow, I've never been so disrespected as a customer as I was here at Retro Fitness Glendale. I switched gyms over to one that values customer service, values a clean workout environment, values having enough equipment for the amount of members. So when I went in to cancel my membership, I was quickly sent home by the two immature cashiers who read off a script saying how there is no one there able to cancel my membership. I'm sorry but WHAT? You're telling me that there is no one present with enough responsibility to issue a membership cancellation? When I went with my girlfriend to Retro Fitness Williamsburg, a low level staffer was able to cancel her membership within a minute or two. So whats going on here? To add insult to injury, the two cashiers laughed in our face about the situation and when we demanded to speak to a manager we we're denied. Bottom line is this. Retro Fitness Glendale is run by a fraudulent management who's only concern is their bottom line. Don't be fooled by their cheap monthly cost.. run away while you still can. read more
