I have memberships in two other gyms as a perk due to a working arrangement. These memberships cover my entire family. My son didn't care. His friends go to Retro, I begrudgingly set him up with a membership. The bonus? He can also go to the Retro in Pearl River. He loves this gym...which makes me love this gym, and now you can save time as I'm sure you will love this gym. Fantastic staff and everyone (even the other patrons) help, support and root for all, no matter your level of fitness. They will help you achieve whatever IT is that brings you to the gym. My 15 yr old son can easily throw me over his shoulders now... and I'm not small. Lost my sentimental watch near a machine at this gym location and NEVER heard back from management in regards to lost and found or camera footage to retrieve it. NOTHING not even a courtesy call. Management is never in the office or somewhere away on vacation per front desk. Whatever I'll take my lost just know this gym don't care about your concerns just poor customer service. read more

This retro is a very comforting retro. Besides the fact that they have a franchise mandated theatre and smoothie bar the staff is nice and the place is clean, especially for covid. They also replaced the filters in their HVAC systems for better air quality! Theres enough machines for everyone to use and the place is a good size. Not too big or small. read more

Tappan Retro is a good gym. Especially for the price. Clean. Not overly crowded. Large. Friendly staff. And, I appreciate it even more now that I've moved and am a member at another location (different owner). But, this review is really more for the manager Nick. It's been a headache trying to transfer my membership to the other location. However, Nick has gone above and beyond trying to assist me with that and retain my points. He's been courteous customer focused. Things lacking at the other location. I've gotten nothing but incorrect information. I wish I lived closer to the Tappan gym! read more

I love this place, the one in Northvale is great, the one in Cresskill is good but too small, the one in Cooper City, Florida is also great!

There's only a million gyms and I still ponder.. This place stays clean, great value and it has 2 floors of training !! Pretty simple. If you care about your clients, the client is happy. What makes this gym worth going to is the cost of course. It's $80. less expensive a month than my former gym, which closed. The staff is very friendly, except for one lazy person whom I asked for help regarding using a machine. I got little more than a grunt of a response as that person continued to sit on their derrière. The teachers are mixed as far as technique and using proper form, and it will be up to you to push yourself if not finding classes challenging enough. Taking two classes in a row can make easier classes equate to one good class. But if one finds an excellent teacher, that's all you'll need at Retro. Just follow that teacher's classes and you'll be fine. I'm an "Angela" groupie myself, as she teaches with enthusiasm, humor and proper form. Her classes are never the same routine, so one doesn't get bored. Fortunately for me and others, Angela teaches a lot of classes both at Tappan and Pearl River. She's also in fantastic shape and leads with example. I find all the teachers to be helpful if one has questions about an exercise or "move" taught. Some teachers automatically suggest alternatives to their exercises, correctly assuming many students have aches and pains (I have Sclerosis and early Osteoporosis ). :( Members are allowed to go to all Retro gyms, so going back and forth to Tappan and Pearl River for classes is convenient enough, offering one more options. read more

Had my account frozen before covid hit, and after they reopened, they charged me monthly even though I never intended on going back because of the risk of getting covid. I called them to cancel and told me that I have to pay for the past 4 months?? and then I asked them to cancel and told me that I have to pay my balance first and then pay an additional cancelation fee. It took me awhile, but I really like this gym. It has all the equipment one needs, and the just added six extra trx stations in the basement. They have a movie room and make shakes. It is clean and never so crowded that one can't use a treadmill etc. The manager and all the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. And all for a very low monthly fee. read more

Very clean and new location. However, it is missing quite a few pieces of equipment that most gyms would have, such as a donkey raise ab station, padded squat machine, seated calf machine, etc. It tends to be a little crowded during weekdays between 4 to 7. Also the majority of members are kids from high school. It seems more of a social hour than gym time. You'll have four people rotating on one piece of equipment hogging it. They need to bring in more adult members and better equipment. Also it is lacking management, no one tells people to put their weights back or to stop slamming weights. I complained about someone slamming their weights repeatedly and the response was a laugh. Why are teenagers running this facility only? Other than that it is clean and all equipment is fairly new. You've got to check out this gym. It's been recently remodeled so now the entire basement is dedicated to functional training. There are tires to flip, battle ropes, kettle bells and other pieces of equipment. They also got some new cardio equipment on the main floor. It's clean and not overly crowded (though it does get full in the early evenings). Worth the $20 per month and then some. read more

Since I was unable to reach this place for months and received no communications from them, I was shocked to receive a notice from a collection agency for failing to make membership payments. I can't understand how they can expect members to make payments for periods when the club wasn't open, or start charging again (apparently at a higher rate) without any communication. I called the club several days ago to cancel my membership and was told that the manager would call me. Did not get a call, so I called again today. Was told that my membership has not been cancelled, and again that the manager would call me. Collection agency provides no way of speaking to a human. I joined this place when a neighboring health club folded without notice taking my money with them, so I am reluctant to give a credit card number to a collection agency for the unwarranted back payment without guarantee of cancellation. I am 68 years old and asthmatic, so I'm not willing to risk my life to stand on a tread mill at Retro Fitness. With another potential COVID spike that could lead to closures looming, think twice before signing an agreement at this place. read more

Really cheap but mediocre in too many ways. Some of the staff are just plain snotty. When people suggested they institute a 30 min. maximum on coveted machines when gym is busy, they basically ignored this practice which is standard courtesy policy in every other gym. As a result, it's often hard to find cardio machines during peak hours. Music is loud and obnoxious. Many members are over 25 and don't need electronic noise played as music during a work out. I been in the gym industry a long time. I have alot of big endorsments and have been in multiple commercials and ads for under amour, NFL and Bodybuilding.com to name a few. Im very respectful and keep to myself. Ive NEVER endured a problem in any gym until I came here. Kevin the "tall big ego" trainer was beyond rude and disrespectful. I instantly wanted to leave the club untill I had reached out the owner Gary who called me within 10 minutes to address the problem. The club is beautiful and the boxing equipment is a very nice touch. I will not judge the club based off of Kevin and his horrible customer service skills. Instead I will judge the club based off of there equipment and the owner. With that said I will return to this club to train for my upcoming fight in 5 months. Gary was a stand up guy and an amazing business man. HIS customer service skills is what made my experience a positive one instead of negative. If your in this area you will not find a better club for a more affordable price. Do yourself a favor and go try it for yourself !!! read more

I've been really happy with this gym so far. The facility is beautiful, the staff is really friendly and welcoming and I couldn't say more about the group exercise classes. Liane's total fit class is excellent...she's a great instructor, the class is different each time and she's motivating and experienced. The spin classes are great as well, Angela is great. Friendly staff, very clean and excellent equipment. They offer a turf area with large tires, full boxing area and an oly lifting area (bumper plates) for free. The bathrooms and locker rooms are very clean. Highly recommended. read more

It is new and relatively clean, and has all of the equipment I need, but it seems like it's all bunched up too close together. Parking is almost adequate, but the place is too crowded with teenagers in the late afternoon. What is the minimum sign up age, anyway, like 12? The equipment and classes are very good, especially the newly renovated downstairs area for kick boxing and strength training. My issue with this gym (as with most gyms) is that we fifty somethings - although we are the ones with the money - are invisible to the young staff and the EDM music is absolutely insufferable. I wish these places recognized the 40+ year old crowd and went the extra mile for adults. That includes hiring a few people over the age of 25. read more

I recently joined Retro Fitness after a long (too long!) hiatus from working out. I drive past this location all the time and it looked like a small storefront, but it's deceiving. When I first walked in, I was impressed by how roomy it is. It's bright, very clean and the hours are terrific. I go in the evening, after 8pm, and have my pick of cardio machines. The music isn't overwhelming or too loud. I typically throw my headphones on and watch my own TV (at my treadmill or elliptical! I love that!) or listen to my own music. I do think it's more a younger group when I go (I guess it's time for me to admit I am "middle-aged"), but I haven't found anyone to be disrespectful, staff or otherwise. I am always greeted when I come in and have found staff to be helpful. I like the mix of people, actually. It's nice to be surrounded by so many working hard to get or keep in shape, young and old. It's great motivation! And you just can't beat the cost ($19.99/month). No matter your age or physical size, this gym is a great fit! read more
