The gym is pretty good, has a ton of equipment. I recommend trying it as it's a "good" retro! Only downfall is that there are SO many kids on one machine. I feel like a chaperone. I recommend going as it isn't terribly crowded all the time. read more

I have been a member of Retro Fitness for over 4 years. My favorite class is Forever Fit taught by Randy B. Randy makes the class fun and the hour flies by. Randy shows modifications to some exercises for those who may need it and "pushes" the others who don't. Randy's class has become so popular that there are days there isn't enough room for everyone - that just proves it's a great class! Fabiola B. Who subs for Randy is also another exceptional trainer! I like coming to this Retro as well as the one in Fort Lee. Hackensack seems to be a little run down. I usually come here later in the evening, so I am able to grab the machines I need to get a work out in. Staff is attentive and friendly. I've been going to Retro Fitness in Tenafly since the day it opened. Not only are the Staff members all super friendly and respectful but the gym itself has more than you could possibly ever need! Super clean, tons of space to workout, and amazing trainers should you choose to go that route. For $19.99 a month I don't think you can possibly find a better gym to go to. Lastly, I see a lot of people bashing the employees/trainers on here for simply telling people to comply with the rules. So after going to this gym for a couple of years, there are some pros and cons that I have had the chance to experience for potential customers wanting to sign up. The CONs are mostly for when I go which is between the hours of 5pm-8pm. Pros: -Friendly environment with the staff(The ones I've encountered mostly) and gym members -Clean Equipment -Basketball court Cons: -Small parking lot (Between 5PM to 8PM you are not getting a spot unless you sit in the lot or park across the street) -VIP areas (Must pay 10-15 dollars additional to membership to use resources that are free in Hackensack or Tappan) -Equipment layout (Needs a 2nd floor or expansion, machines are too close together. Must be very aware of space doing exercises as well) -Waiting around (Be prepared to wait to use a squat racks, benches, or cables as they are always being used at these hours) As a gym that is close, I love going here, but the cons sometimes make me drive an extra 10 minutes to Tappan instead. read more

I started coming to this retro once I began working in Bergen county. The community here is unlike any other gym I've been to. The workers actually greet people by their first names when they walk through the door, even before they sign in so you know they pay attention to their regulars. This gym utilizes their space so well. Free weights all the way in the back, front, separate room for squat rack / deadlift area, and cardio at the end. They removed the theatre and made it a VIP area, which upsets me because I prefer to watch movies while I do cardio but it's okay. They also have some machines that I haven't seen in any other retro, which is a plus. read more

Nothing about this gym justifies it's new price at around $25-$30 when all it is is a planet fitness that is not purple. In terms of chest pressing machinery and rowing machines, they have downgraded from hammer strength units to matrix units to have a more uniform brand, but most experienced lifters will tell you that is a downgrade. I would not have a problem with their business model if the price was not 3 times a planet fitness' price, but to charge almost triple with the same machinery and size simply due to location is atrocious to me. The only machinery that I can admit would let them go up from $10 is their Hack squat and T-bar row, but even the t-bar row is a broken down Titan row and the hack squat has poor range of motion, I need to put a mat under my feet every time. Their renovation giving them an excuse to raise their monthly fee but then downgrade in most areas cannot be ignored. read more

I've been a member of the gym for a little under four years. Parking around 8 to 10 AM as always been a hassle due to the 15 classes a day they have in the morning. I have always ended up having to park two blocks away and walk the way to the gym. The "trainers" and gym owners make this gym a little less fun due to the constant patrolling, feels like we're 5th graders and they're our chaperons. The leg area is the newest part of the gym and it is great. Although the trainers have their personal sessions there and hold the room hostage. Overall this retro is cleaner than most, and the people working out + employees (with the exception of a few) are nice. read more

Retro fitness Tenafly is the cleanest gym around Bergen County NJ, and have up to date equipment. Plus the personal trainers are the best there as well. There are too many machines cluttered, some of them located too close each other which create hazardous conditions. Many machines are not always operable conditions, especially on audio equipments on treadmills. The men's cloak room is always in mess with plastic bottles and papers, and bathroom is filthy and unclean. Parking around is packed in a certain time zone. read more

I've been a member here for 3+ years so I'd say I have a good scope of this place. Let me say that cleanliness is this gyms strong suit! Always disinfected and wiped down and never skeevy. The people at the counter are kind and usually drop a hello and goodbye. The equipment is decent as well. Lots of machines, good amount of free weights and a couple of specialty barbells. Cardio machines are no issue either and a good amount of bands and yoga mats and even trx. Most of the trainers there are super nice and welcoming. Unfortunately that's where things take a turn south. The owner/trainer here, Marco. Is very offputting, he walks around staring at a lot of members. And they notice, I noticed him always throwing dirty glares almost everyday I was there. I feel for the female members, no one wants to be ogled while they exercise. He also has a habit of singling out members for slamming weights which is understandable if they actually were. You can't deadlift here unless you want to Be scolded or stared at. They ask you to use bumper plates and mats which is totally fine but to ask someone not to be loud deadlifting is unreasonable. Also, unless you're a smaller member doing bodybuilding type things or a female client of his you'll probably be ostracized. Heavy lifting isn't welcome here but begrudgingly tolerated. The other trainer, Patrick isn't as bad but he stares and glares too and is usually shouting loud enough for everyone to hear him. Even with my headphones in and even if it's to one of his elderly clients I can hear him spouting horrible misinformed advice to his poor clients. Not a good pair to represent this franchise. Aside from Marco and Patrick the only other thing is parking. The parking lot is very small but that's not really in anyone ones control but be aware of it. Unfortunately I'm going to cancel my membership here. Due to my needs and fitness goals outgrowing here and also the bad taste in my mouth the 2 trainers left. Joined during the summer of 2018. I belong to many gyms as function of what I do for a living. I have only review one gym that are dirty as a warning. But his place is different. An owner works as a trainer and came over to me 2xs and asked me not slam the weights. Now I was using the cybex eagle dual chest press with a weight stack of 300lbs. I was was doing the whole stack and 2xs he said I was slamming the stack down. I told him I was not but I would try not to. He then said if I I did it again he would kick me out. So my response was I'll quit, but join me at the front desk so I don't get unnecessary fees. When I initiated for him to walk with me he physically threatened me, latterly said he would throw me on the ground. I wish I could say there was more to it but this guy has some serious anger issues. How his anger over took him was amazing. He was on the verge of losing all control in front the entire present gym membership. This guy needs help. read more

I have been a member for a little less than a year now and I love Retro. The staff is very friendly, it is always clean and organized. Love the group classes, where I always feel welcome and don't ever feel intimidated. Two months ago I decided to give personal training a try with Daine Chang one of the personal trainer that works at Retro. I have been very impressed by his passion to help clients, his knowledge, and his ability to connect with his clients. I have seen amazing results since I started the sessions, he is very caring and attentive to my needs, what my limits are, and how far he can push me. He encourages me and motivates me to do better, and yet he knows how much I am capable of. I plan to be a long term client, and more importantly, continue to work with Daine. read more

This gym is very old, not updated and somewhat dirty. There are some extras (basketball half-court & boxing room) that area extra fees per month that are not worth it. There are way too many machines, some often duplicates, that are jammed in one area. Also some machines need to be badly serviced and have been hacked... meaning, there is literally spray-painted plywood holding one of the machines together. The weight-lifting bars are extremely old and not well kept. The benches in the weight-lifting area are beat-up and old; most aren't stable. The cable machines in the weight-lifting area are also a decade old and are awkward, bulky and work terribly. Lastly, the music is AWFUL. They have the retro fitness radio that comes through the TVs but for whatever reason they mute it and play off of their phones instead. It's often awful techno/club music that is entirely too loud. The icing on the cake is that they use a free radio app on their phone, so there are commercials blaring every few minutes as well. There are entirely better gyms that offer extras (boxing area) for FREE that are 10-15m away, which are highly recommend (Retro Tappan). If you are a cardio person: this gym is fine. If you are an avid weight-lifter: avoid this gym. read more

Love this gym. I split my time in NJ so only get to workout here Friday-Sunday but I get my best workouts here. Large space, never overly crowded, large area for free weights, and the staff is nice. I have been going to this for almost 2 years now. Parking has always been a little bit of an issue because it is a smaller gym and due to that, depending on the time, it is hard to finish a whole workout because the machines I want to use always seem to be taken. This is understandable because like I said, it is a smaller gym. Other than that the gym is always pretty clean and the staff is very friendly they always greet you and always have different smoothie samples to try. However, today was the only time I really felt uncomfortable here. I was told not to "slam my weights" which I get but I wasn't doing it on purpose, like what kind of idiot do you think I am that I would purposely do that, meanwhile everyone else around me was doing it as well (not purposely) but it does happen. You'd think people working at a front desk would at least have some decency and manners, they don't have anything but a nasty sh*t attitude. They deserve to be nowhere near anything customer service related. Especially one girl with long brown hair at the front desk. AWFUL. GET A NEW JOB and any owner that allows this kind of behavior at their establishment needs to be shut down as well. I'm sure the Better Business Bureau has heard a few complaints already. Customer service is a very low (non existent) priority of the woman who owns this gym. Recently, over a period of many days some equipment was mal functioning and staff didn't know when repairs would be made. For a number of days I asked that the owner please contact me. She never responded. On Sunday April 5th she was at the gym but avoided me. I asked why I never heard from her. Her response was if I'm dissatisfied she will cancel my membership; and that I should "get the hell out of there immediately; and that if I didn't she would call the police." I told her yes, please cancel the membership and let me have a receipt confirming cancellation. Again, I was told to get the hell out of there or she would call the police. Any requests for information about this gym from others will definitely be met with "Do not join! read more

I wanted to try this gym because of the advertised basketball court that was available and what a disappointment it was. Its a half court gym and looked relatively clean and nice, however, it comes with a $5 per person/per hour surcharge for usage, which Is not included in your membership. I should have known there was something up when no one in the facility was even looking in the direction of the court. My group left and went to a park a few blocks away and played some straight up FREE street ball. $5 per person/per hour is way too excessive, expecially if no one is around using the court. $5 per group may be more tolerable, but the amount they have right now just feels like robbery. As for the gym, it's a little smaller than other Retro's that I have been to, however the facility is clean and the machines work fine, but the reason this place gets 2 stars is for the disappointing extra fees. read more

As a member of Retro Fitness for many years it truly is a shame that I now have to agree with the vast number of people I know who have left this gym as it truly exists as a hub of unprofessionalism with certain staff members who epitomize rudeness. I had never had an unpleasant experience at any other Retro except this one, where according to the 5'0 foot, effeminate high school looking Filipino gentleman at the check-in counter, ( described for you to avoid as I have no name) he seems to call the shots. Aside from him doing anything such as welcome, be courteous, and offer perhaps a "goodbye" upon checkout, he persists to be an extremely rude staff member doing nothing but spending his shift on his phone, undoubtedly texting. With a disposition such as being accomplished whether physically, professionally, or intellectually, it seems odd upon talking to him he would have such a chip on his shoulder as he is obviously lacking in many ways. He has told me as well as other guests to not make noise when metal clanks during heavy sets in an extremely rude manner, and in a way that it is obvious he is singling out people for some type of compensatory inadequacy in his personality. As two of my friends left this gym rather than deal with his behavior, I felt as a paying member it was only appropriate to call/inquire and request he reflect about his customer service. I was then punished by the facility and this staff member for doing such and upon re-entering he established the owner told him he may behave how he wants and actually harassed and stalked me during my workout, actually critically eyeing me for any flaw/critque to use against me ! Upon leaving the gym he demanded in an aggressive and threatening manner that I give him my personal information . Has he forgotten he is nobody, not an owner, but an employee and we are paying members? Has the owner gotten so complacent and entitled that she thinks it is OK to hire staff with absolutely zero professional skills? I wish the owner instead of giving autonomy to her staff to harass people, she would suggest to them to take out the overflowing garbage, make customers feel welcome, keep the gym clean, and actually do their job. If you have any doubts, just go to Retro Tappan for one day and see at what length management has led the gym to be a welcoming, class act environment. To the commenter below me, I completely agree with you about the extremely tan staff member walking around eyeing people to critique, and the way he eyes his female clients seems to be quite inappropriate and uncomfortable for everyone. If you are an actual lifter and would like to lift without being berratted or judged this gym is not for you. equipment and gym in its enterity is super clean, which keeps me coming, not to mention the friends i've made here and see daily. I've been singled out and accused of slamming weights even on days when i haven't touched a single barbell and its getting to the point where cancellation is the only option. I shouldn't have to turn my head and feel the part owner/trainer's eyes beaming at my neck for something everyone else does. Or the managers "bathroom" breaks just to check on what she can bother me about next. The co-owner with the husband is a great woman and i've never had an issue with her. But i wont name names. I even have video proof of me using the squat machine while someone was deadlifting and she sticks her head in and goes "i knew it was you.
