######### This is the small reuben's place that you go down stairs when you enter, like in a basement. It doesn't compare to the other reuben's 2 block farther. This is like a cheap small snack place. They are under staff like many places, but the waiter was rude in his saying and spoken only English to us. Do yourself a favor, go to the other reuben's.

The food was delicious! A really large menu. Something for everyone. We had the chimmichurri steak salad and bbq short rib grilled cheese. The waiter was great and the atmosphere was comfortable.

French onion soup - so cheesy!

Recommend! Popped in here the other day when EVERYWHERE else was closed. What a respite from the cold! We got the French onion soup, the grilled cheese with bacon, and the smoked meat Royal with poutine on the side. Overall we were very happy with the meal. The French onion had great flavor and was so cheesy on top! I will say that maybe it was a little too much of the bread on top, eventually it felt like I was fighting bread to get to the soup. The grilled cheese was yummy but maybe a little on the greasy side. My husband loved his sandwich. I didn't try it but he raved. I was hoping to get to try the poutine, but alas - I have a shellfish allergy and there isn't a separate frier for the French fries and the shrimp. Heart breaking. But my husband said it was amazing. It was great to pop in and would likely return if we were looking for an easy casual meal.

One of my daughter's friends who lived in Montreal for over 15 years recommended this place because they supposedly have the best Reuben's. We did try it and guess what? He was absolutely right - they have the best Reuben's that my son and I have ever tasted. We both that reuben's were supposed to have dry meat because most of them do. This corned beef we so tender and juicy! Now, I will be spoiled for anything else.

A small tip representing what I felt about the service :-(

Dropped by here recently for lunch. I haven't been back here in probably over 3 years and when I was in the area shortly after restaurants were allowed to re-open for dining services, this place was closed during lunch time. I passed by today as I was downtown and it was a nice sunny day and decided to eat here as I felt like a smoke meat sandwich. Since I was downtown for work and my lunch was roughly 1 hour long (taking me about ~10 minutes to walk here and another ~10 minutes to walk back to my office), I thought that I would have plenty of time for my lunch. My lunch was at about 1:00pm and I probably arrived at the restaurant around 1:10pm. Going downstairs, there was someone waiting to be seated before me. People working at the restaurant seemed to be ignoring the line in the front and one of the people decided to go into the restaurant and speak with the server to let her know that people were waiting to be seated and there were apparently empty seats. There was a sign at the bottom of the stairs mentioning that they were working at reduced capacity. The server showed up and then seated the people who were in front of me and then returned to seat myself. When I followed her, I noticed some of the tables were closed/cordoned off so they weren't operating at 100%. The server gave me the menu and then left. Even though when she led me to my table, I spoke with her in English, she gave me a French only menu. It wasn't really that much of an issue as I can understand French and knew what I wanted. When I looked at the menu, it seemed as if prices have increased dramatically and they also don't have any lunch specials or at least these weren't advertised/mentioned on the menu. The server returned with a small glass of water and asked if I was ready. I told her that I was and made my order. I ordered a smoke meat sandwich (called Super Smoke Meat). Since this is the first time I returned since the Covid closures, the tables were bare except for a paper napkin, fork, and knife (no salt, pepper, ketchup, or mustard containers). My order took about 10 minutes to arrive to me and when the person dropped off my order, the person (it wasn't the server who took my order), just placed it on my table and left without asking me whether I wanted ketchup, mustard, salt, etc. Also, after 10 minutes, with the small glass of water that they gave, the glass was empty and I wasn't offered a refill. After I finished my meal, I wiped my hands/mouth with the paper napkin and crumpled it up and put it on my empty plate to signify that I was finished. I also removed my wallet from my pocket and had it in my hands. Waited another 5 minutes for the server to return and when she returned, she took the empty plate and asked me if I wanted more water. Sorry but my meal is over and I didn't get a refill when my glass was empty shortly after the start of my meal and I'm now offered a refill?!? Why not offer me ketchup/mustard/salt now?!? The server asked me if I was ready to pay and I said yes. She then left and served a few other tables before returning with my bill and the portable credit card machine. I paid and wasn't sure what I should do with the tip since I didn't feel that she deserved my customary tip (where I would automatically click on one of the predefined percentages on the machine) and I felt that even a low tip of 10% was still too much for what little service I got. I also didn't feel like perhaps causing a scene by not giving any tip nor did I think that not giving a tip was warranted. I decided to manually enter a dollar amount for the tip into the credit card machine and the transaction was processed. When the credit card spit out the copy of the credit card receipt, the server saw how little I left as a tip but didn't question me on it. She probably thought that I was just a "bad tipper" or was visiting Montreal from another country/place and didn't know how tipping worked in Montreal/Canada. I wanted to tell the server why I had left such a tip but due to the time, I didn't want to be late returning to work. I can't recommend eating here for lunch (maybe same thing applies to dinner) based on the service. The food was however good. If they aren't going to refill the patron's water glasses as frequently or regularly because they are (too) busy, they should probably give larger glasses of water. The glass of water that they gave was probably less than 200 ml. 200ml of water during a meal isn't enough in my opinion. If due to sanitary and Covid concerns, they no longer want to give/leave squeezable bottles of condiments (ketchup/mustard) on tables, my suggestion is to put the individual packs on the tables or when placing the plate on the table, automatically leave 2 packs of each item/condiment on the table as well or at least ask if the person wants ketchup for their fries and extra mustard for their smoke meat sandwich. Giving 2 stars since my previous review was 3 stars where service was better.

    Reuben's Sandwich

Saturday evening, had a six-person reservation for dinner. Diner-style interior with cushioned booths and dark-wood tables in a dimly lit setting. Menus has a little bit of everything - running from breakfast items to steak dinners. Figured to go with the safe bet and ordered the Reuben's Sandwich ($18) - a large helping of smoked meat, swiss, tomato, lettuce, and sauerkraut alongside fries and a pickle. Liked the smoked meat and the fries are cooked well. Bread is a little greased up from the butter and cheese, which makes the giant sandwich hard to finish. Service here is friendly, and we got our food timely despite being a larger group. Price is a tad high, yet they do match the portions.

After being gone from Montréal for a month I was craving comfort food a la max. Reuben's delivered. Friday night 5:30 pm Service was fast and very professional. I've eaten here more then I can count and I've yet to have a waiter as professional and friendly as the man I had. He was from around lac saquaye area I believe tall man with brown hair. Opened our napkin sticker and removed the sticker from the table. He went that extra mile and we really noticed. We shared our meal and he brought us plates for the salad the poutine and sandwich. Most the time they just put it in the middle and you both have to try to lean over the table to enjoy your meal. At the end of our meal he said happy holidays have a good night and thank you for coming. This guy deserves employee of the month. 5 stars to our waiter 4 stars for the food, smoked meat isn't my favourite in Montréal but all around tastey! Bravo

I find that their smoked meat is very good, I recommend checking it out if it's your first time in Montreal and you would like to try some local food. During my last visit, I ordered one of their steaks. I think it's called Hamburger Steak (I might be wrong). It is served with sauteed onions on top and comes with a side of French fries, veggies, a pickle and some gravy. Portions are pretty big and food quality was also pretty awesome. Service was also good (the waitress was very nice to us). The only thing that I didn't like was that it was very dark inside.

Its my go to place for smoke meat downtown. The view isn't great. Actually it's horrible. In a dark gloomy basement, one floor down from Ste Catherine St. you will be greeted by friendly staff who work hard to have you coming back. The smoked meat comes stacked high on rye bread and served with a huge pickle snd tasty slaw. I think they changed their fries. I prefer the big meaty greasy fries. They serve the match stick type. Nonetheless everything tastes great.

We come here a few times a year to get our smoked meat fix. We tried all the other smoked meat restaurants in Montreal but this one is the best in terms of consistency and keeping true to the tradition and great overall food experience. This time I had the Super smoked meat platter with a poutine and coke. It hit the spot and we will be back....

We have been here twice which is the same amount we've visited Montreal on both occasions it was for lunch, on both occasions the great service shined out, after our meal they went out of there way to answer a question on where we could go to buy flowers. We had Cobb salad and Bangkok chicken salad in reality we could have shared as portion size is huge. Both salads were very good to follow we shared a very tasty blueberry compote cheesecake. When we come back to Montreal we will definitely pay another visit. Thanks guys

Amazing food, service , and ambiance…read more A visit to Montreal isn't complete without a stop at Schwartz's Deli. The smoked meat sandwich absolutely lived up to the hype. The meat was incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, piled high between fresh rye bread with just the right amount of mustard. The atmosphere is classic, authentic, and full of history. Even with the line outside, the service was efficient and friendly, and the food was worth every minute of the wait. The pickle and fries were the perfect sides to complement the rich smoked meat. You can tell why this place has become a Montreal institution. Simple menu, legendary food, and an experience that feels uniquely local. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Montreal.

We walked into a space that is small, constantly packed, and built around fast turnover rather than comfort, with people lining up at the counter while orders get called out across a loud, crowded room. The energy hit us right away, and it felt more like stepping into a system that has been running the same way for decades rather than a modern restaurant experience. The smoked meat sandwich is the main reason to come here, and it delivers in a very direct, no-frills way. We ordered one and found the meat thick, heavily seasoned, and with a deep smoky flavor that came through right away. The texture stood out most, tender but still structured enough to hold its bite, especially when stacked on rye bread with mustard. It is simple in concept but feels complete in execution, with nothing on the plate trying to distract from the main item. The sides like pickles, coleslaw, and fries felt more supportive than essential. We tried the poutine and found it solid and filling, but it clearly sat in the background compared to the smoked meat sandwich. Everything on the menu seemed centered around that one item, and the rest of the food reinforced that focus rather than expanding it into a wider dining experience. Seating is communal and tightly packed, which added to the overall intensity of the place. It was common to share tables with strangers, and there was very little personal space once we sat down. The noise level stayed high the entire time, but the service was quick, so the pace of the meal kept things moving even when it felt crowded. Schwartz's Deli feels like a Montreal institution defined by its simplicity and consistency. It is not a comfortable sit-down meal, but the smoked meat sandwich is strong enough to make the entire experience worth it, especially if you are there for what it is known for rather than the setting around it.

Literally between the time I handed over my money and the cashier turned around to make change from the register behind her, my order was ready and bagged in front of me before I got my change back. I had nothing else to do but walk out and find a place to eat. I was literally in the store for less than 2 minutes! Now the Wilensky is salami, bologna, and your choice of cheese on a roll (that reminds me of an english muffin) with yellow mustard. Simple but absolutely delicious! I've had bologna sandwiches before but never thought to add salami which adds a little spice. That bun was super pillowy and just eased right on down after taking a bite. I generally hate yellow mustard but this wasn't overbearing smear. Each Wilensky was like $5 each and incredibly satisfying. My friend took me and she was quite pleased with herself for introducing me to a spot I'd never been to before! The place: To me, it's part grocery store/convenience store/take-out place. You can't sit down here if you buy food - it's strictly to go. Just FYI. Great place to get your afternoon snacks, though! The goods: Besides the standard drinks and snack food, you'll find two buffet-style stations where you can pick and choose what you'd like to eat. One station is salads while the other is hot stuff. A word of caution - price is determined by weight. I'd say that much of the fare is Middle Eastern-style cuisine but this may depend on the day - I'm not sure. When I went, I was starving so I tried a little of everything, including meatballs (yeah I know - my mostly vegetarian self having so much meat lately, is getting out of hand!), chicken, roasted zucchini, pasta salad, rice - I'm sure I must be forgetting something because my container must have weighed five pounds. Besides the spinach rice leaving me underwhelmed, I loved every single thing I tried. Those meatballs were AMAZING and bursting with flavor. You have to try them. The chicken was equally delicious and tender - cooked to perfection. Honestly, I could give you an itemized breakdown but it would be redundant since everything was great. Definitely a great place to grab lunch if you were in Bonaventure or the surrounding area. Just figure out how to get there and you're set (=-D Service: The clerks at the cash were friendly. Price point: This is where it gets tricky.... While I did try a little of everything, I'm not sure it was worth $18 ($21 with a drink). It was a little steep, in my opinion - I mean, you're serving yourself after all. In any case, since it does go by weight, prices will vary. To be fair, I did get some heavy items (but those meatballs, though!). This is definitely a place worth checking out - the quality and freshness of the food alone, is worth the detour

I know there were many items there that I am forgetting- but everyone who passed through while we were there was focused on their sandwiches, like we were. Highly recommend- you'll be back. PS Very reasonable prices for that amount of meat- that's great these days!

I absolutely love Zytynsky's Deli!!!! Being a big fan of Ukrainian food, had to check out…read moreZytynsky's during my visit to Montréal. A little out of the way from everything else had been doing, but wanted to check out this local institution. So glad I did! Did not expect Zytynsky's being in such an unpretentious brick building, but the magic was all inside. The store had an excellent curated selection of Eastern European gourmet items, all clearly presented with pride. Since I was on vacation, my goal was something to eat that day, but did spend some time looking at all the imported goodies. When I arrived, Angel, the extremely friendly woman behind the counter, was dealing with a couple of familiar faces to her. I overheard that she's been at the store for about 40 years, but I didn't realize that she was the owner and the founder was her grandfather. At my turn to order, I asked her for some suggestions. Ending up with a Smoked Meat Sandwich and a Polish Ham, Hungarian Salami and Cheese Sandwich. Also grabbed two cans of Ukrainian Zero Alcohol Beer. We chatted a little while she prepared my food, and she was absolutely charming. Able to enjoy both sandwiches upon return to my hotel. While for years been a big fan of Hungarian Salami (which was fantastic) the star on that sandwich was the amazing Polish Ham... maybe the best I've ever had! The sensational Smoked Meat Sandwich was perfect! Look forward to my next visit and thank you Angel for my memorable eats! Appreciate your support of Ukraine, too. Zytynsky's Deli is a remarkable place and recommend you check it out! Slava Ukraini!
