We sadly lost both parents within a few months. Both viewings (and one service) were held on site. Reyers (and Taylor) handled everything beautifully. Every detail and request was managed in the most appropriate, sensitive and caring way. We are a rather large family and both events were well attended, yet all of it seemed to flow with ease. Rated one star because zero isn't an option. If you low-key hate your family this is the perfect place for you. It all started one hot and sunny day in July when my grandfather's spirit left this Earth. The funeral home was called and they sent two men to pick up my gramps' body. They roll up, two men no younger than 78 (real life we asked how old they were). "Hey guys it's hot; feel free to take off your jackets and ties or whatever". The family explains the complexities of what's about to unfold-- "second story, narrow stairs that have at least one turn, yada yada, won't be easy". They get in with a board with some straps and load him on. They strap him twice-- "is that enough? Should you add one more?" Nah fam, we're good. Cool. They lift him up, all 98 pounds of him. Exit the bedroom and one of the guys starts sweating. Not like "it's hot and I'm in a long sleeve shirt sweating" but like "I might be having a stroke and am possibly going to add to this body count" sweating. Sick. Cool. The best. So they teeter my grandpa on the sectional and sir-sweats-a-lot sits down and puts his head between his knees. The family is running around, getting him water and cold rags, ya know....the usual hospitality things for your local undertakers. Turns out he's diabetic. Okay let's find this man a cookie. So he's eating and trying to get color back into his face and my uncle is like "let's get him out of here...it's hot and he can't just chill on the couch all day". So they hoist him up and start going down the forewarned about stairs. Cue some "Weekends at Bernie's" action as he pinballs off the walls down the staircase. Plot twist: two straps wasn't enough. Awesome. No biggie funeral home- my grandma really wanted to watch her dead husband bounce off the walls. Post mortem face prints were a nice addition to the space. Really livened things up. So they get outside and put a nice show on for the neighbors as they decided that the front lawn was the proper place to change out the pillow he was resting on and to finally cover him up. Oh yes, he went out into the neighborhood mouth open like a baby bird just out for the whole world to see. Leaving with a bang, honestly, I don't think he'd be mad about it. Grandpa liked putting on a show. You're welcome, Riverside gardens . As you can imagine the family is horrified and brings it up as we make final arrangements and they admit that the ball was dropped....grandpa kind of was too but hey, semantics. So they agree to pay for the service which was honestly a solid good faith gesture. Like kudos, we are super fine with this. Fast forward. Y'all, I bet you thought you've seen it all. Cue Billy Mays: "BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!". Fast forward to the weekend of his celebration of life. It's Friday, a storm hits. Not just like "hey did it rain last night?" but more like "holy shit trees are down and are we still in Kansas?". So lots of people lose power and whatnot; my grandma being one of them. My mom calls and asks if the fam can stay with me Saturday night as the celebration is on Sunday. Yeah cool that's fine, let me go get some air mattresses and wine coolers (it's about to be lit y'all). So they get here and I'm like "hey I've got air mattresses and wine coolers. Grandma I bought those for you; I know you used to drink them yes?" So she takes one and exclaims that it's been a day so I naturally prompt for more information. Y'ALL. THE FUNERAL HOME CALLED HER AND SAID THEY LOST POWER. Wanted to cancel because they didn't have power. Nope. Nuh-uh. You have 24+ hours. Find a generator and make that shit work. Okay, for real though, what kind of place that deals with DEAD BODIES on the regular just doesn't have a backup generator? Did y'all put that shit on ice? You send them back to the morgue? What's the tea? So they agree that they would make it work and would have lighting and music still. Solid but okay grams, I see why you're stressed. Finish that peach Bellini Cheri. Have two. Treat yourself. We roll up the next day. Day of the celebration. They have, and I genuinely wish I was lying right now, they have COLEMAN camping lanterns and half lit string lights lighting up the place. I'm crying, not even the normal like "I'm mourning my dead grandpa" tears but like "this is laughable and someone's about to get their shit rocked when my aunt sees this" tears. I'm there waiting for some high strung family member to pop off, nobody did surprisingly (proud of y'all). People start coming in and I'm like "yeah, this mood lighting really sets the tone, amiright?". It goes off without a hitch the rest of the time and grandpa got his one last show in for everyone so I guess he got what he wanted. As I looked around and wondered what he'd genuinely think about all of this though, ever so softly, playing from the battery operated Bluetooth speaker, is the bee gees singing about the sweet joys of "staying alive".
