I had a quite good experience at this salon. It is comfortable and relatively informal. I got a manicure, pedicure, haircut and blow-dry. Pros: -Skilled professionals; my haircut was exactly what I wanted and my manicure is still completely intact 2 days later, which is more than I can say for most manis I've gotten. -Friendly staff. -Inviting, pleasant atmosphere and decor. -There was no attempt to push me into buying additional products, even though many were for sale. This was nice, because I hate when salon employees try to sell me extra hair stuff I really don't want. Cons: -Expensive for small-town Maine -Manicure/pedicure area not particularly clean; a couple strands of someone else's hair were in the basin of the pedicure chair, for example. Nothing too horrifying, but showed lack of attention to detail. -The pedicure massage chair did not seem to work quite right. -Didn't appear to be any parking on-site. There's a town lot across the street but depending on time of day it can be hard to get a spot, and there's a 3-hour limit to park there. Overall, I recommend this place. Their prices are listed on their website so just check it out to avoid sticker shock. As long as it's in your budget, a visit there should make for a lovely, relaxing few hours' break from your day. read more

I'd never been to Maine before, so when we decided to go there to elope, I was asking for recommendations left and right. After receiving feedback from people on Trip Advisor, and asking the locals, time and again I was referred to Roberto Hostins Salon. And they did not disappoint. First of all, I made the appointment several months in advance, so naturally it was on my "to do" list to call and confirm my appointments for my hair trial and for the big day. The salon beat me to it! I received confirmation calls for both appointments with plenty of advanced notice. All staff were pleasant and attentive. I arrived several minutes early for each appointment and both times was offered a cool beverage. Water was served in glasses (not cups, but glasses). Some may not see this is a big deal, but sometimes it's the little details that add to the experience. Ally was my stylist and she was fantastic. Not only did she listen to what I wanted, she recreated the hairstyle perfectly. She's also very personable and made me feel comfortable and at ease and that I would look my best for the big day. That day was the prettiest I've felt in my whole life. I'd read another review of this salon that mentioned that it was a little pricey. I think that's relative. Given that I was getting services for a wedding, the prices were competitive with other salons at a number of different locations I'd been considering for our wedding, all around the country. The team at Roberto Hostins Salon did a great job, and to me, it was worth every penny! read more

Id had the same long boring hair for over thirty years, a year ago this month I decided it was finally time for a change and I trusted Roberto to make that change happen. Now I'm totally adicted! I walk out of the salon with my head in the clouds, at least 5 women I work with have gotten similar styles in the past year! By this past February my boyfriend (who generally would just pop into a storefront at a strip mall) asked if Roberto cut men's hair. He now won't go anywhere else! Not only are the styles lovely, he teaches you how to fix your hair at home, and kept it simple enough that we can both look good with pretty minimal effort. Sadly, and to my surprise, hugely overpriced for basic service. They should advise regarding their upcharging practices, for example an additional $19 to run a flat iron through! Charging $60 for a blow dry following a root touch up. Never, have I seen such a greed. read more

The salon is nice and the hair stylist was nice but I never been unhappy with my hair like this after spending 2hrs in the salon. I understand she can't make the ash brown happened for my black hair because according to her she only have two hours for me, so I have to choose a different hair color but I can't understand how she couldn't achieve the layered hair cut that I want. Well...I was a bit nervous at first to go to a salon because I e never been to one always went to a barbershop...when I walked in was greeted and sat in a nice little area to wait for my appointment time...Kathleen was the nice lady I set up my appointment for...she was very nice, personable, took into consideration what you wanted and also made suggestions on what else could be done to keep my hair heathy...again never been to a salon so after the cut got my hair washed!! FUN! And then a light eyebrow wax again I came out looking 10 years you ger thanks to Kathleen and her professional hair care knowlege!! thank you again and def a spot to book when I come back in a couple weeks to stay looking fresh! Oh almost forgot set up an appointment ASAP this city had no availble chairs unless you have an appointment!! Kathleen is the lady to see!! I visited this salon to get my hair done for pictures with my husband's family while on vacation in Maine last week. First, the work - Amanda did a fantastic job giving me beautiful, long, loose curls! I have fine hair, but a lot of it and it goes to almost my waist. I was a little nervous to visit a general salon in Bar Harbor as I am used to salons in NYC that specialize in blow drys and styling. Amanda eliminated all of my reservations when she spent the first few minutes of my visit asking very specific questions about what I wanted, which products hold a curl in my hair and then discussing how she was going to set the curls to ensure they lasted as long as possible. As she got to work on my hair, we made friendly conversation and she was very pleasant to visit with. When she was finished, I was blown away. My hair looked AWESOME! It was on par, if not better, than some of the stylings I have had at specialty salons in NYC. My hair looked so great, that the photographer had my husband and I pose in such a way that she could capture the beauty of the curls in some of the photos! And now the other parts of my visit: - the styling was very affordable and moderately priced (approx. $30) - the salon was clean, modern and the styling chairs were super comfortable - the receptionist was very friendly and immediately offered me water when I arrived - they were very flexible with me and allowed me to move my appointment to another day when our original photo session was moved due to rain - my only "complaint" was the parking situation. There is not a private parking lot so you have to park on the street or in the lot across the street. Anyone who has been to Bar Harbor knows this can be difficult! read more

While this salon is a little more expensive it is worth the extra money! The products are great and I got the best haircut of my entire life here. All the employees are super friendly and professional. Roberto is super knowledgable and experienced. The atmosphere in the salon is also wonderful. read more

The Salon is nice and the stylists are friendly, but the product is below average. I was there last summer to get my hair done for a wedding. The stylist spent 10 minutes on my up-do and it looked very amateur-- and cost $85 plus tip! I was shocked. $100 for something I could have done myself. To be fair, other stylists were doing better jobs, but the bridesmaids I was with were all pretty disappointed, and shocked at the price. read more

The salon opened early for me in order to do my hair for my wedding. I booked the appointment only a few days in advance, since it was a spontaneous wedding. Very poor! But it is a nice shop. The lady to do my nails was late. My appt was for 9:00 and she got there at 9:20. Very little nail color selection. She was unorganized. No sanitary steps were taken no sanitary bag in the pedicure bath. I really didn't get a pedicure just a nail color change. Same with my manicure. I got gel nails and I had to keep reminding her what to do next. 80.00 and took 2 hours. read more

Do yourself a favor and stay away......incredibly poor customer service, after 3 attempts to allow Roberto to right his wrongs....I am a resident of MDI, and it appears Roberto is only interested in "drive by" business....he consistently offers his clients an appointment, and then "turfs" you off to another stylist, once you have arrived at the salon.....long wait times.....I have not been taken to my chair on time, despite 3 appts (silly me, you would think I would have learned after the first time).....today, was the last straw...Roberto agreed to a "late" appt (5 pm), and after waiting for him x 40 minutes, he said acknowledged that my "stylist" would be with me in a few minutes; when I reminded him that I was booked with him, he replied, "but she is staying LATE to do your hair "; I reminded him I was booked with him (again, he did this 6 weeks ago, on my second appt there)....I informed him I left work early for my "late" 5 pm appt time, and that I could have stayed at work and completed my project....I also informed him that I have been treated badly each time I have visited his salon (by him ditching me each time).....I don't even know why I gave him the benefit of the doubt, he isn't even a very good stylist....not sure about the rest of his staff, perhaps they know how to cut, color and style hair, imagine that !!! Save yourself NOW, and do your research, and ask around.....wish I had...I am going to Ellsworth and check out The Alchemist, which I hear is wonderful, and appreciates their customers and their customer's time.... read more
