We've been going to Rhett's for years whenever we're having a special occasion and want to grill. I love being able to see him cut my steak right in front of me and then add his famous rub which makes me look really good when I have guests over and they think it's some of the best steak they've ever had. I also just love going into his shop because of all the baseball memorabilia he has on the walls. I'm a baseball guy and it's like a little trip into history. Well some people might say it's expensive; I would counter that by saying, you get what you pay for and the steak is just as good if not better than any of the steakhouses in the area. When I asked about more budget-friendly roasts like eye of round or tri-tip, the owner launched into a lecture about his 'high-end' USDA Prime-only business, acting like my questions were beneath him. I mentioned how much my husband and I love chuck eye steaks--they're affordable, taste like ribeye, and butchers on YouTube rave about them for home cooks. His response? 'Only fit for hamburger.' Ouch. The frozen section had chuck roasts that didn't even look steak-worthy, and the whole vibe screamed entitlement. What I love most about shopping here is that whatever cut of meat you fancy, you know it'll be the good stuff (can come with the good stuff price, but you do get what you pay for). Rhett seems to be a straight shooter. He's an old school butcher and it's an old school meat shop. He'll help you understand all the various cuts of meat and the differences between the cuts. He even showed me a nifty trick to feel for the doneness level of the meat when grilling (though I'm still gonna use my trusty thermometer ;). I found my trip here to be a masterclass of sorts. AMAZING quality of meat! My husband took our 4 year old with him to pick out steaks to grill in below freezing weather for valentines. He got a new grill and this place has been on our list to try for years! It's located in a small strip mall right near May and Britton directly across from the homeland. The only negative complaints i could see on this place was the often times not welcoming personality but my husband had an excellent experience Rhett even threw in my son a tiny "steak"! Every filet or cut of beef you get a side of mashed potatoes. Yes the prices are rather high around $40ish a Lb but my husband and I both after digging into the first bite both agreed it was entirely worth it! The filets were so flavorful and tender. Definitely get the rhetts rub that can come with it helps add flavor and you won't regret! Also the potatoes my word were amazing i wish he sold these separately but he doesn't. Of course, when you're paying nearly $40 per pound you expect quality. Rhett always provides it. I won't presume to know Rhett from our brief annual encounters. I can say my interactions have always been positive. When I messed around this year and waited until it was too late to place a pre-Christmas order, he was kind enough to tell me the best times to drop by. His prediction was spot-on. I've never had a bad experience here. The butcher is knowledgeable and kind. It's not cheap but good, quality meat shouldn't be cheap. Let's start at the top. 1) He stated this is aged prime ribeye, @ $33/lb 2) the marbling does no where resemble prime, nor the aging resemble the color. 3) He hand cuts them, but very uneven. Look at the photos. 4) We watched repeatedly where he cuts meat in the main area, wraps with plastic wrap, then picks up a serving handle to serve the mashed potatoes without washing his hands. After he loads those up, he then picked up a pen for a hand written receipt, grabbed the credit card and ran it, handed it back, then went to the next cut without washing his hands. We threw the potatoes away at home since they are contaminated, and I suggest anyone who bought meat here do the same. I'm sure it was good back in the day, but this place needs an overhaul. Also, the meat needs to be confirmed if it is prime and actually aged, especially at that price. read more

Wow! We have used Rhetts for years and brought them so much business. We have never been treated rudely, until today. I called to place my order for Christmas and was told he doesn't do potatoes the week of Christmas, so I asked if I could pick up the week before Christmas thinking I could freeze everything. He went on a rant about his business and why he cant cook potatoes, when he was done...I started to place my order and he hung on me...then wouldn't answer my call when I called back. To my surprise, not only did I leave with a prime rib that could make a carnivore weep with joy, but the owner's no-nonsense exterior hid a heart as tender as his meat. Rhett may be straightforward, but his prime rib is a flavor symphony. Rhett is quite possibly the most honest and transparent butcher and service provider I have ever encountered. First I'd like to say It takes a lot for me to leave a negative review. I understand people have bad days and I take that into consideration because I'm not perfect either! Today I had to pick up my son and was excited to see this meat market. I had been wanting to try it for some time but have been too busy to get there so when today's pick up location was next door, I couldn't wait. Before I could put my son's stuff in the car a man came out and yelled at me to move my car twice in less than five minutes. I didn't even have time to tell him the first time that I was coming inside before he spun around and went inside. My sister in law said she'd still sit with my son so I could go in-even after the man was rude to us. Before I could decide to go in and give him another chance, the same man came out a again to tell me to move my car and this time I told I was going to come in but due to his rude behavior I would not enter his establishment. I understand his perspective, but not a single car or patron entered the shop in the 5 minutes I was parked there or the 10 minutes it too me to get back on to May Ave due to traffic. I'll also add there were enough spots if anyone wanted to park at the same time I was there to enter the business. I'm disappointed. I really was hoping to find a gem and brag about it to everyone. You can get them marinated in Rhett's seasoning which I highly recommend and cook them on the charcoal grill and you'll have an amazing meal. I was referred to Rhett's and told to try the ground ribeye burgers. I bought the 4 pack and fell in love!!! Returned the next week to purchase the 20 pack for a cookout. Guess how many I had leftover? Yep, none!!! You will not be disappointed with these burgers. If you must season them, only use salt and pepper sparingly. read more

2nd and last time I'll be in there. As others have mentioned, the guy is rude. To spare you the details, the icing on the cake was when I paid with a 4 day old gift certificate for $100 and the bull was $99 and change. He said "that's almost all of it," took the certificate, handed me my bag, and matter of factly told me to "have a nice day." Go ahead and pocket the change, owner. For others, you can get Dry Aged as well as Prime and Choice across the street where it is actually clean and they are glad to help everyone. I really thought he was just having a bad day the last time I went, but no. And judging by reviews with the same problems, it isn't just me. If he was the only choice in town, or even on that street, he would be able to get away with it. But, he isn't. He know's his prime isn't better than what you can get elsewhere and that is exactly why he flips his lid when when you ask him for your steaks to be unseasoned. He's the only one around that insists on seasoning the meat before you leave the store. That should tell you something. It isn't magical truffle dust, it's basic beef seasoning with (I'd bet $) MSG instead of salt. YMMV read more

While the meat is good the customer service is horrendous. I visited Rhett's to purchase several steaks only to be ignored by the owner and his wife. After finally obtaining their attention and placing my order I was very rudely directed to the meat case and told, "steaks are in there." The place is dirty, the carpet stained and their dog is behind the counter WHILE meat and the mashed potatoes (which you can only get if you buy steaks so don't bother to ask) are being packaged.
