Bell graves and…read morecolonels The Union Cemetery is usually considered as part of the old Commons Graveyard right across the street. The two sort of merge into one and look quite similar. Lot of very old graves here, many dating back into the 1600's. Other s are just about gone, worn down to nubs that are impossible to read. This is a very cool graveyard with a whole lot of history. Fascinating going around from grave to grave reading the inscriptions. The ancient town green is here too and the Commons Graveyard Is actually right on the green. A cool old bell guards on side while a church is on the other. History and the feel of the past just permeates the entire area. Not a fancy cemetery with a lot of rich and opulent graves. Some pretty cool ones like a statue of a colonel and some small obelisks but all the markers and memorials blend together quite nicely with the ancient trees and wonderful old houses of the area. A graveyard that has been here for a long time. And I suspect one that will still be here long after I am gone.

A lovely old…read morecemetery The Hillside Cemetery is located on an inlet of the Sakonnet River in the quaint old town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. A lovely place for a walk with distant views of the river and some nice rolling hills. The cemetery is quite huge with both new and very old parts. The oldest graves date back to the 18th century and of course there are others that look older but are now impossible to read. Lots of very cool and unique memorials and gravestones complete with unusual and archaic names and symbols. Some of the stones still look new and fresh while the softer stones are sometimes broken and worn down to virtually nothing. Hillside is a lovely old cemetery in a lovely old town. Many old graveyards have a spooky and morbid feel to them but not this one. I wouldn't exactly call it cheerful but it is a beautiful and historic area and a very nice place for a very peaceful stroll.

Friendly and peaceful…read more Many cemeteries, especially old cemeteries, tend to be rather spooky and unpleasant places. Cool places to walk around and look at the old graves and history but certainly not places were you feel like you are welcome. Mount Hope Cemetery is definitely a different and unique type of graveyard. Really does have a park like feel to it and seems far more peaceful and friendly than spooky. Most of the graves are very well taken care of and have lots of cool and personal items around them. Red Sox flags, pictures of the deceased, statues of pets, favorite sayings and quotations, little benches with invitations to sit and spend some time and unique and different gravestones. One individual even had a gravestone in the shape of his favorite motorcycle. Just doesn't get much cooler than that. A very friendly and welcoming cemetery where the deceased aren't just names and dates but still individuals with unique personalities. A wonderful and fascinating cemetery to walk around, enjoy and wonder about what some of the cool souls were like when they were alive.

The grounds are in excellent condition, with winding paths, mature trees, and a quiet dignity that makes it easy to linger. The primary attraction for many tourists is Lizzie Borden's tomb, which is surprisingly simple to locate. Proceed directly down the central road from the main entrance on Prospect Street. A fork will appear after 200 yards or so; bear left and keep going until you come to a little rotary. Just off the road to the right is the Borden family plot; park close by and stroll toward it. Lizzie's stone is plain and level, bearing only her name: "Lizzie." Her parents and sister Emma are among the many Bordens buried there, and it's part of a wider family cluster. The cemetery itself is quiet. Historic without being overgrown. Solemn without feeling oppressive. The kind of place where memory feels tangible, especially when you're standing among the names that shaped one of America's most enduring mysteries. Mayflower and mayor…read more The Ancient Little Neck Cemetery is indeed ancient. It was established in 1655 and the oldest recorded grave is John Brown, the guy that actually purchased the land that the graveyard is on from the native Wampanoag tribe. The spooky old graveyard has lots of very old graves, memorials and plaques and if you take a look at the top of the old flagpole you will notice that it has a carved skull on top. A whole lot of famous colonial New England folks are buried here, including Elizabeth Tilley Howland who came over on the Mayflower and died in 1667 and Captain Thomas Willett, who became the first English mayor of New York. The ancient graveyard is an absolutely fascinating place filled with plaques and memorials about shipwrecks, wars and disasters. It looks a bit worn in places and could probably use a bit of TLC but then the scruffy look just adds to the spooky and weird ambiance. One of the coolest and historic colonial graveyards in New England. Over 1,000 graves here from 1622 up till 1993 and of course all kinds of hauntings and bizarre things have been seen in the area. An amazing and historic place to spend some time with the people of the past.

My grandparents on my fathers side are buried there and I have to say after visiting it I was…read moredisappointed in the upkeep. I tried to find out who owned it and finally got a hold of a gentleman who claimed to be a commisioner several years ago that told me that the Chinese bought it and that it was only mowed twice a year! Then I was looking at some statistics that werent very promising that there were sources that said remains from plots had been flung over a wall so they could bury someone else in the plot! My heart sank thinking that my grandparents couldve been flung! I havent been back to the cemetery in awhile as I live in a different state now but I am interested to see what can be done about the state of the plots and headstones. I understand that it is a historical place and that it is ancient. However there is no excuse for it to have been let go like it has been. I wanted to buy plots if there were any available so that I could be near my grandparents but I doubt there are any left.
