Without insurance it is $90 to be seen (which I knew would be pretty standart) -- but I was pretty positive that I had a UTI and really needed to be seen -- so I bit the bullet and paid. I had an appointment for 9:30 am, and arrived early as I knew I had paperwork to fill out...I sat in the waiting room for an hour and 25 minutes, then was moved to an exam room and waited 30 more minutes. Why bother to make an appointment if you are treated as a walk in patient? Upon his arrival the doctor asked me to take a urine test and a pregnancy test--the first is standard procedure for this kind of thing... but a pregnancy test...really?? WOW I felt like I was back in college where when you went to the infirmary a pregnancy test was standard...even if you had an ear infection!! Dr. Addo not believe me when I told him that I could with 100% accuracy due to the timing of my visit declare that indeed I was NOT pregnant. Both came back negative -- which if any of you experience a UTI you'll know exactly when you have another one.... The specialist was also absent of compassion and sent me to physical therapy. So three copayments and three chances for them to bill the insurance for the same problem for the same singular issue. And needed to use a competing practice who did show compassion and the pain has since been better and compassionate care was found. Also, in addition to making in-network referrals so you have to pay three times, their billing office likes to bait-and-switch. Twice I went for a physical and told no co-payment. However, I discussed medical concerns so they billed me. Yes, get told no copayments for physicals but they change their minds once you go in to discuss your medical problems.

We had a positive experience at this health center yesterday. (It is time consuming either way). I waited for 10 or 15 minutes before being seen by the medical assistant who took my vitals and another 5 minutes before seeing the PA. I asked for a strep throat culture since I couldn't swallow and I've been around people with similar symptoms. We are cruising around on our boat which is in Newport). I test positive and the PA prescribed antibiotics. I asked family members and the crew to test at the same facility yesterday and today and some tested positive. If someone takes antibiotics for strep you are no longer contagious after 24 hours. Hopefully we've nipped it in the bud so others don't get sick.

While the PA prescribed anti-nausea medication, I found myself having to ask basic questions about how to safely rehydrate, what I should be drinking, and the min amt I needed to avoid becoming more dehydrated. Those are things I expected would have been discussed without asking. She ordered a stool sample kit and her nurse or tech instructed me to drop the sample off at Newport Hospital's lab. I called the lab and was closed. I then called urgent care for guidance. I explained that I was very sick, weak, dehydrated, and in a town I was unfamiliar with. I was told to "drop it off anyway" because "they would take it." When I asked who "they" were if the lab was closed, she would answer the question. Instead of helping me figure out where to go, the staff member became dismissive. When I asked for her name, she refused to provide it, saying she wasn't comfortable giving it to me. I was left confused, still very sick, and without clear instructions for completing the testing they had ordered. Patients deserve accurate information and compassionate communication, especially when they're acutely ill and away from home. I will be filing a formal complaint.

If not for the good folks at Westport Family Medicine Center, I wouldn't be able to go back in tomorrow. I went to their patient-only walk-in clinic yesterday and was out an hour later with a diagnosis and three prescriptions that have been working wonderfully to bring me back up to full speed. Although the doctor I saw was not my PCP, he did a great job at making me feel comfortable and taken care of. I've been a patient of Dr. Jane Li since December and the level of service the doctors at this facility provides is above and beyond. I switched over from being a patient at the STARR Clinic near my home and the difference in service and quality is astounding. Their facility was recently renovated and everything is brand new and squeaky clean. If you're looking for a new PCP, I can't recommend switching over to Westport Family Medicine Center enough.
