Beds were comfortable and staff member was kind and very helpful during check in. I wish the door to the lobby was open overnight, it would have been nice to use the water machine. I give Rib Mountain Inn 3 stars, the facility was actually very nice, quiet, clean and we had a good night's sleep. The reason for the 3 stars is because of the manager April, who is a very rude person and does NOT talk nice to the customers to the point of actually yelling at them. The other gal at the desk was very kind and helpful, Damie was her name. April in my opinion should definitely not be in customer service if she has anger issues like she displayed to the customers checking in. I almost had gone somewhere else after having called to ask a question before deciding to book with Rib Mountain Inn, her phone etiquette was not friendly,and very sharp tongued. A nice cabin for a weekend ski trip! My family recently stayed here for a getaway, spending a few days to relax and catch up with all our extended family while getting out on the slopes for some skiing, sledding, and checking out the local hang spots for a few drinks. The Rib Mountain Inn was perfect for our group, with multiple townhouses/cabins to house everyone while not piling them one on top of the other. Each cabin was pretty cozy, with a wood-burning fireplace, balconies, and full kitchen. Some parts of the cabins were in a bit of disrepair (like the headboards on the beds), but were overall good enough for the price. We also met up in the basement of the main lodge and there was more than enough space there for our big group to chat and catch up on all the recent life events. Overall, while the cabins could use a little love here and there, we still enjoyed our visit and would choose Rib Mountain Inn again! read more

THIS PLACE STINKS - LIKE A WET DOG!!!! This place is unlike any of the places I have ever stayed in during my 34 years of my business travels. I chose this lodging while working on a project in Wausau, WI. Because of its location away from the main street commercial areas (it's located in a residential area) and it was small business owned. From the pictures it looked like a very nice place and the extended stay rate was very good. Upon arriving and checking in the request was made to prepay at least two weeks up front and since I knew I would be there that long I obliged. It was only after running my credit card and looking closely at the policy of the property that it was more of a nonrefundable lease than a day-to-day hotel room rental. Upon going to my room, I found it stunk!!! It stunk like a wet dog; the order was so bad particularly on the couch in the room I couldn't sit on it! The couch must have once housed a hideaway bed, but the mattress was removed and had no support and was impossible to sit on. I never raised the cushions because the smell was so bad, I was afraid of what I'd find, and it would worsen the smell. I spoke to the owner of the Inn about all this, and she deflected every complaint, told me there would be no refund, and to move to another room the rate would be $241.00 a night. I was also told that I could get a refund IF I checked out by 11:00AM. Already on my worksite and my first day on the job that was almost impossible. This is a real racket the owner of this place has and he deflection of my concerns were well practiced as I am sure she had heard these problems before and the take-it-or leave-it attitude was clear. Other problems with the room included a very small flat screen TV with a blown speaker, Spectrum cable channel were few and not worth watching, the kitchen was poorly equipped with pots and pans, the vinyl flooring was coming off the floor, hot tub did not work, one of the mattress in the room sunk in the middle and was broken down, the carpet was sticky in places, and to air conditioner had to consistently stay running on high to circulate the air in the room to tolerate the small of the dog that was once there. I tolerated all this for a few days and finally checked out early and moved to a hotel that was clean, updated and equipped to accommodate a guest and not a slum lord Inn keeper renting a worn out room. Needless to say, don't stay here and I'll never return. read more

Hotel itself was fine, a bit outdated but nice room and comfortable beds. However when I arrived the person at the front desk was incredibly rude. I offered my information for my car but didn't know the information for the other people in my rooms cars and said I would do it later and told me I wouldn't (I did by the way) or she would have them towed. and basically yelled at me the entire check in when I literally did nothing. I would definitely not stay here again just because of that. However after she left for the weekend (thank god) the rest of the staff was lovely and very helpful. read more

We just recently spent a long weekend here, and, even though it is obviously not ski season, there was still plenty to do. Hiking, horseback riding, and lakes nearby. You are right at the foot of Rib Mountain, so you can even hike up the hill this time of year (if you can make it, that is, which I could not). We stayed in one of the townhouses, which are newly decorated and roomy, and ours came complete with a big jacuzzi in the basement. Huge plus, they are dog friendly! Our lab, Max, is so in his element running through the wooded areas behind the lodge, and even my 10 pound lhasa apso was loving it. We saw a lot of deer, who don't seem to be in the least bit afraid of people. I felt relaxed as soon as I walked out of the car... and the weekend flew by way too quickly. I have been there in the winter also, and the skiing is not bad as far as midwestern skiing goes. Lots of snowboarders too, and families. The main lodge has an outdoor hottub, and a sauna inside. Also, there is free (and really good) home made breakfast in the main lodge every day. read more

The night we arrived at the hotel, we were unable get sleep because people downstairs were yelling, playing loud music, and stomping on the floor. They continued to do this past 1:00 so, we decided to call someone at the desk. They refused to go down and stop the "party". Horrible customer service, and the management was called multiple times by many people, and they continued to ignore the requests. They continued to make noise until 3:00 AM. Would not recommend this hotel. read more

Great atmosphere!! Love the rustic feel. Room was exactly what we expected, loved having a full kitchen & fireplace to use. Beds were comfortable & really liked all the pillows since some hotels don't seem to have enough for us, this room had more than enough. Breakfast was what a lot of hotels offer so it was good. Lady at the front desk was very nice & when I called ahead of time to ask what was in the kitchen (so we knew what we could cook during our stay) she double checked to be sure. Although the fire alarm went off when we used the oven. A couple downfalls of the place is the ice machine is in the lobby & lobby gets locked around 10pm so if you want ice after that you're out of luck. And having the hot tub outside, because of the rain storm it was closed so we weren't able to use it. Would be better if there was an enclosure for that area so weather wouldn't be an issue. But overall we loved our stay & will definitely be staying again in the future. read more

Update on my previous review. I finally was able to get into contact with the original person, Brenda I talked to. She was able to honor our original 2 night stay agreement. I think if you are able to talk directly to someone and work with that person the entire time, their system might be ok. But if you need to email, or have exceptions or special agreements their system doesn't work very well. My advice is to keep any emails and get the names of who you talk to to make sure if something comes up, you have that to prove your agreement. I love this place and it makes you feel at home the minute you walk through the door. We found the Rib Mountain Inn online as we were looking for a pet-friendly hotel in Wausau. Not only does Rib Mountain Inn welcome pets, but its facilities are very homey. We stayed in one of the Fireside Studios with a patio door that walked right out to our own patio, lawn and woods behind. The pugs loved that they could sit outside all day, just like at home. The rooms look like they have recently been updated and you can tell that they did it right with real tile, new appliances and countertops, all the way down to the stainless cookware and matching silverware. The beds were also very comfortable. The best part is the service. The staff was very accommodating. They offer free breakfast every day. This is no Motel 6 continental breakfast; there is cereal, granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, bagel, toast. Then, since we had breakfast on a weekday, they don't normally make up hot breakfast items, but they offered to make us eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and sausage by order. We took them up on this and it was great. This hotel is just off the Interstate, but the wooded, quiet setting makes you feel miles away from it all. The price was right, the service was great and I felt like I was at my home away from home. I am trying to find a reason to come back in the Winter to try my in-room, wood burning fireplace with hot cocoa on the stovetop. read more

Stayed two night last weekend for a three day ski trips with the 'guys'. Simply awesome place. Great kitchen, comfortable beds, nice fireplace. It's not the Hilton, but you're very close to Granite Peak, and the staff are extremely friendly. A very central WI vibe. Wouldn't hesitate to come back with the family either. They'd love it. The walk to the slopes with gear is short - nearly like walking from a parking lot and back. No biggie, and the trail goes through some peaceful woods. This was a destination for a girls get away for people coming from different locations. The place is very dated, however we did enjoy the roominess and fireplace. We had a table to play games and to sit and talk too. I wasn't too thrilled about having to pay for a fire starter log just to start the fire.... $2 for the fire starter and extra wood was $5. Just seems a little desperate for an upcharge... just supply some kindling and newspapers. So if you plan to use the fireplace here bring those things along. The only ice machine is near the lobby, so you might want to grab some when you check in. Kind of inconvenient. It's the simple things that can make a big difference. I'm on vacation after all. The carpeting was pretty beat up, as well as the furniture, drapes and decor. Fire place screen was broken, deck door didn't lock. Mold in the grout of the shower. Would I stay again? I believe I would, because there was room enough to hang out and chat, have drinks and enjoy each other's company, I'll bring kindling next time! read more

After years of returning The Townhomes at Rib Mountian Inn need an update. Our lodging has most everything we need but lacks some expected amenities. Staying in the 4 bedroom we had plenty of room for our 2 families. Hot water pressure and towels were plentiful. The kitchen had ample plates and cups, but almost no cookware. Making food for 10 people is hard to do in a small skillet. Furniture is worn and desperately needs to be replaced. Smoke detectors were out of date, and batteries needed replaced. We know this because they kept going off and had to be removed. Many outlets were not working. Circuits were checked and this was not the problem. The lo k on the door was very finicky. It automatically locked at times and other times was open. No lock on the door from the garage was a bit concerning as well. We hope these updates are made so that we can return, the location is perfect for skiing. read more

The hotel is terrible. I came for a business trip and thought this would be a good place to stay since it was somewhat central for my trip. It was not worth the price, the lobby is only open from 7am to 9 pm so dont arrive late, they do not have elevators so either do not bring much or try for the first floor. The coffee pot in my room was disgusting coffee stained (hint running vinegar through it will help it work and clean it), the showerhead was disgusting and barely worked, the tv remote was literally held together by electrical tape. I could not talk to anyone because the lobby was closed but this place is not worth the price at all. I cannot believe that Marathon county has lowered their standards to allow this. read more

We were looking for a 3 night stay and he was adamant about not renting anything for less than 4 nights - actually sounded offended that we would ask. Stayed here for three nights, starting November 4, 2010. What a treat. We stayed in one of the 'fireplace' rooms, with two queen beds. The matresses were great , room and bathroom very clean, and the gal clerk couldn't have been nicer. This is considered 'in between' seasons, as the cold weather will be here in a couple of weeks. We paid $89 per night, with the third night at half price. Such a deal !! They include a washer and drier downstaires (free), right next to the sauna(free). They also include a full hot breakfast made to order-had bacon, eggs, bagels, blueberry muffins, juices, coffee, cereals, etc. This is a very friendly and warm inn. They also have a couple of houses for rent to larger parties. All of this right at the base of Rib Mountain. Good deal, nice room, nice benefits-Isn't that what we look for while traveling. We are currently starting our fourth week of travel from Los Angeles, through the Southwest, Midwest, South and East Coast. This is the cutest stay so far. Enjoy !! read more

We came here for a Thurs-Saturday ski trip and had a great time. It is within walking distance to the slopes. It's a smaller property - and I like that. Actual room keys are a nice reminder of a time gone by. The staff was very friendly and the amenities aplenty. They have an "honor system" DVD rental bookcase near the front guest. The Saturday breakfast was full of kids and families and very loud - so if you have kids you'd feel right at home. We were very happy overall with our visit to the Rib Mountain Inn and wouldn't hesitate to come back (albeit maybe on a weekday as we are DINKS and like our quiet) read more

This might have been the WORST reservation experience I've had with any hotel! DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL! My wife made a reservation to stay at the hotel 3 days in advance. That same day, a few hours later, we decided it wasn't going to work and needed to cancel. So, we called back and spoke with someone who was very short and unfriendly. I explained the circumstances and he just quickly said "it's taken care of". Not once did he mention any cancelation policy or any charges that would be incurred. He seemed in a hurry to get off the phone and I neglected to ask about the policy. The next morning (still 2 days before the reservation), we noticed the FULL amount for the hotel had been charged to our Checking account. So I called and spoke with "Phil" who said, he saw no notes regarding a cancellation. Phil was also very short and didn't apologize for the inconvenience. He said, "That must have been Doug". I said, can you please cancel the reservation and refund our money. He said, "Yes, I'll take care of it". This time I asked what the policy was. He said "there will be a $30 fee". I said, we were never once told about the fee before reserving the room and it's not mentioned on the website. He said, "Ok. I'll take care of it." Again, very short. I said, can I have proof of cancellation since it didn't go through yesterday? He said "we'll send you an email with the cancellation". So I said thank you and goodbye. Later my wife who made the original reservation said, we didn't give them an email. And of course I again forgot to ask if they had it, because he was so short and didn't have the time on the phone to be thorough. So, unfortunately I had to call back to give them my email address. This time, I asked if I could speak with a manager. The lady at the desk "Judy", said she would get him. "Phil" picked up, who was the same guy who was short with me 10 minutes ago. I said, I think we just spoke about the cancellation but you don't have my email address to forward me a cancellation notice. He then took my email. This is where it got ugly... I asked him if he was the Hotel Manager or if he was an assistant manager. He said "I'm the manager". I said, so there isn't a manager that you report to? He said "That's what 'Manager' means...". I asked if he was talking down to me? He said, "Look, what do you want? I said I would refund your money". I said, "I'm a little frustrated at the moment. I'm being charged for something and I wasn't told in advance that I would be." He said, "That's what happens when you stay at a hotel and cancel." I said, "But no one informed me of the policy before reserving or even upon cancellation. And I'm just trying to make sure it gets taken care of this time so that I don't have to call back, AGAIN! Last time, you guys didn't cancel the reservation." "He said, look, I'm really busy. If you want to call back after 10 am I'll be more than happy to continue this conversation with you." I said "After 10?" Then, he hung up... I've never been dealt with so unprofessionally at a hotel, especially by someone who claims to be the Manager. But I guess it's not surprising, given the "F" they got from the Better Business Bureau. We stayed in one of the condos for a weekend of skiing. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was good, using real eggs and not powered eggs like some. It was disappointing to find our kitchen with limited supplies in rough shape, the vertical blinds were missing several strips and we could not turn them so they were worthless to use, the fake leather chair was really peeling/shedding its outside layer all over the place. Our room up stairs was small but nice except the lamp did not work. I know it has got to be hard to keep up with all of the maintenance in a place like that but, if I owned this place I would be embarrassed to rent out this condo. Maybe the rest of the condos were in better shape but this one needed new carpet/flooring and painting. For the price we paid it was not worth it, we will not be back. read more

First off our stay was in March 2010 so things have hopefully improved with the customer service. This was our first time skiing in Wisconsin and we wanted to stay near the slopes so we chose Rib Mountain Inn. It is a quaint little place tucked in a residential area with pretty scenery. I didn't think the walk to the slopes was bad at all. By the time you drive over there and park the walk can end up being about the same distance. The RMI was very clean (I'm a stickler about this) and the rooms were up to date and welcoming (we stayed in a basic VIP/hotel type room). There was a mini fridge and a microwave (which helps with the ridiculous price of lift tickets and food at Granite Peak). The hot tub was great and although I'm not a sauna person, my family enjoyed it. The breakfasts were fantastic. Now the only 2 complaints I have are the customer service (although Justin is GREAT). Brenda (I think that's her name) is sooooo rude!!! In fact, she was entertainingly rude. People around us were also snickering at her.... when asked by some customers for some blankets, she didn't answer them, but she disappeared, came back with some blankets, and pretty much threw them at them. When she was doing dishes during the breakfast hour, the look on her face was pure annoyance and disgust. And when anyone would set more dirty dishes at the bar for her to clean... she nearly went into heart failure. Her attitude is probably the worst I've ever seen in the customer service industry. I think she needs to find a new field and I'm positive there would be somebody more than willing to do a better job than her. Also, Ken is a good cook, but when bringing more food out to the buffet server, he also wore a sour look on his face. I don't think I heard him utter a word. Thank goodness Justin was there to buffer these 2 nasty people. However, when it comes down to it, we will be staying elsewhere in the future. If we hear that these 2 are gone or have found a way to improve the way they treat customers (maybe some mood stabilizers?? or some inpatient counseling?) we will consider returning. read more

This place was great. Our entire team and their families stayed here for the 7th grade girls State Basketball Tourney. Rooms were awesome- suite style with full kitchen and fireplace. Nice breakfast, used the lobby for a team dinner. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for somewhere to stay with several families. read more

My family made reservations two weeks prior to our one day ski trip. The day of the trip it was actually raining the entire day and we decided to cancel skiing. I called the hotel at 3 pm and was told that I would be charged a $30 cancelation fee. Given that I was late in canceling, I felt this was acceptable and agreed. Now two weeks later, I still have the full amount ($130) of the room on my credit card. I called to ask about removing the charge and replacing it with the $30 cancellation fee. 'Josh' told me that the hotels policy was to charge the first night at the time of the reservation and the $30 cancellation fee only applies if the reservation is cancelled 30 days prior to the date. That has to be one of the most unrealistic cancelation policies I have ever heard. After talking to him, it was very apparent that I was out the money and they were not going to do anything about it. I do not know how the service is at the actual inn, but I do not EVER recommend making reservations there. If you can't find a room there, Wausau has many, many other places to stay. read more
