WHAT A HIDDEN GEM! I live out of town in a larger city and was really impressed. We had the hot and sour, combination hot pot, and chicken curry. The flavors are INSANELY delicious, homemade and the food was super hot. I am sad that we don't have this quality of a place in our city. It all tastes like it came off the same delivery truck. To be fair, there isn't many options for any Asian food in general in this area, let a line Chinese food, so I'm going to give this place the benefit of the doubt. Just because I'm from an area where I get an abundance of options when it comes to Chinese food, I will not allow that to be the premise of judgement on this food. That would be unfair. Let me just say that this is just your average Chinese American joint. I did not expect anything authentic. Was it the best? No. Was it the few spots that does "Chinese" in the area? Yes. When you don't have that many options, you have to work with what you get. But, if I am really honest about the food, it was really bad. The chow mein was drenched in oil and that splash of sugar for taste. The chasu pork was the fake kind with red dye, dry af. The hunan chicken literally had about 8 pieces of chopped up chicken and rest was vegetables, drenched in corn starch sauce, with no kind of flavor or spice. And last but not least, the white rice. How do you mess up white rice? It was dry, and whoever made the rice did not use enough water. Let me just add that this is only for these dishes. Maybe they have better tasting dishes, but specifically, stay away from these dishes. I give them 3 stars for the super nice service and cleanliness of the restaurant. I have heard sooo many good things about this spot that my expectations were just too high. It wasn't much different than any other Chinese sit down restaurant I've eaten at. The wait for our food was long, but I'm pretty sure they actually make most their dishes as ordered not prepped ahead of time and slopped onto a plate. It seems pretty fresh. Service was great! Also, y'all need to take better care of your fishes. That is way too many aggressive type fish in too small of an aquarium; the darker Oscar is bullying all of the other fish. The water was green and glass needs to be cleaned regularly. Having bottom feeders is not a replacement for cleaning. Get a bigger aquarium (like double) or only have one cichlid in that aquarium. These are very territorial fish. And you should definitely do a 1/2 to 1/3 water change monthly... 3/4 water change at least every 3 months. read more

NOT CHINESE FOOD. So, I have some exceptionally complicated feelings here. If I had found this place in the city where I live, Seattle, it would have been an instant 1 star. But this isn't Seattle, and expectations have to be adjusted. There's also the fact that people incorrectly tagged this place on Yelp, the food in the photos is not from this place, and that's not really the business's fault. Then these's the fact that I then incorrectly went to the restaurant with the assumption that they sell Chinese food, when they do not. They sell American Chinese food. An entirely different thing, and again not their fault. So I'm going to split this review into the good and the bad: The good: the waitress was very nice, the place was very clean, there was lots of food, and the food came quickly. The bad: staff are extremely undereducated about actual Chinese food. A couple of examples, I called and asked if they served dim sum all days of the week. They replied, yes, but only dine in. The accurate response should have been, we do not serve dim sum, but do have bao/buns on our menu that are frequently featured at dim sum restaurants. When I arrived, I inquired if there might be a second menu in Chinese (something I have noticed common in the Midwest where a lot of customers are white). They did not, but I also got the sense that the poor woman had no clue what I was talking about. Then there's the food. To be fair, I don't like American Chinese food so I'm already biased. But I assumed that chow mein would have been.... Safe? Not great, but safe? But apparently in North Dakota, Mein no longer translates to noodle, and instead means sludgy chicken and onion with a few dried noodles on top. I'm so confused. And the most confusing part, I'm 80% sure I heard mandarin coming from the kitchen. What went wrong?!? I'm so confused, but I also respect that this might be a BIPOC owned business working to the tastes of a largely non-Asian community, so respect the hustle? I would just say, know you're getting American Chinese food if you come here. And I'll just wait until we get to Chicago for Chinese food if I ever come this way again. read more

Don't let the building fool you. This place looks like a dive from outside , but I assure you it's top notch. The food is fresh, I highly recommend the pot stickers! The quality of the food is excellent as well. You can tell the chicken is hand breaded. Above a library - Chinese! Who knew. Finding this place was interesting, there is some signage, but much larger is the "Public Library" signage on the same building. Anyway, you drive around back to the large parking lot to find the entrance to this Chinese restaurant. Some of the parking is even marked "For Rice Bowl Chinese patrons only". Guess its a busy library. Judging by the crowds, its also a busy Chinese restaurant. Once inside you can take the stairs (which need a serious washing/scrubbing), or the elevator, which I did not take, but was working when I was there. At the entrance someone seats you, in my case a very cute girl of perhaps 10 years old. But she was on top of it all. Kudos, she will go far if she keeps this up. The menu was large, and not the "typical Chinese"' I am used to seeing, so that was interesting. Some new options. I had some dumplings, they were good. Then I had something called paper chicken. I had asked the waitress what that was, and she described it to me, but what came did not seem like what she had indicated. I ate one, they are very hard to open and eat actually, and did not eat the rest. While I did not ask for it to be removed from the tab, I would have expected it to be, but it was not. Fine, I ordered and had the option to eat. But still. It really was inedible. Then, upon cashing out, again the +-10 year old, making change like a champ. Overall, this is fine Chinese, perhaps a little salty, and if I were you, order what you know to be safe. read more

Worst Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. My husband and I gave them 3 chances and all they ever did was disappoint. The last time we ordered my wonton soup had 2 wontons in the entire container and the egg rolls tasted off, almost like cinnamon. I have a really hard time believing that they are in the top 100 of Chinese restaurants in the country let alone in ND. We have always ordered out, maybe to get better food you need to eat there? We decided to try out the Rice Bowl while visiting the Mandan/Bismarck area, and boy are we glad we did!!! The food was amazing!! We had the dinner combo #4, and did make a few substitutes on the soup selection. The wonton soup very very good. The egg flower soup also very delicious. The hot & sour was absolutely spectacular but be warned, the spice level on the soup is very hot, hands down the hottest I've ever had, but you can request they tone down the heat if you like. The portions are also generous. Friendly staff, nice and clean, huge variety of dishes on the menu. I order the same thing here every single time I go, and it tastes the same after over a decade. The house chicken is fantastic. My tolerance for spice is considerable, so I don't recommend it for those with delicate taste buds. Most of their lunch specials are under $5 (!!!) and come with soup! An incredible deal! Definitely the place I miss most about home. Actually, every single one of my friends who has gone off to college says the same thing: Rice Bowl is the first stop on any trip back into Mandan. When I was little, I ordered their sweet & sour chicken all the time and I never got tired of it, so my parents were Rice Bowling it up quite a bit during my picky eating phases. It was a staple of my high school career, too. I even ate at Rice Bowl before a formal dance my tenth-grade year. I love its location and I love everything about it. The employees are beyond friendly, they do get to know you, and delivery is really fast. It's so quintessentially Mandan while also being a much-needed pop of real culture right on Main Street. Nothing there has ever disappointed me. It's all delicious and the atmosphere is great. The walk-up aspect is a little annoying, but it's not going to kill anyone. I had the shrimp in dark sauce and also had the general tsao chicken. The chicken had big meaty pieces. Also had the hot and sour soup, it was a little bit more sour than i have had before. It was really good had some for dinner and leftovers for breakfast. Tasted like fresh veggies, really nice and crunchy. The waitress was really nice. The restaurant is located on the second floor. Up until tonight I had been extremely happy with the food and the service. I had eaten here about 6 times over the last year. I decided to try something different this time so I ordered the #3, chicken chow mein, pork fried rice and deep fried shrimp. Immediately upon being served I noted a odd odor. The flavor of everything reflected that odor? My waiter cashed me out and asked how the food was. I told him that I was extremely disappointed. After some conversation he said, "all you want to do is complain." I left but later returned to talk with someone else. The young ladies made lots of excuses for the food and the waiter.
