Service was a zero; food was 5 stars. I was the ONLY customer eating in so one would think the waitress would be somewhat attentive, but not so. I waited in the entry to be seated because no one came from the back to seat me. Once I got my food she never checked back to see if I needed anything. I waited 10 minutes for a water refill. I waited close to 8 minutes to get my bill after I finished eating and then waited some more for the leftover container. I was so disappointed. Worst food I possibly have ever tried. I arrived at approximately 11:30 for lunch. My first plate was from the "salad bar" which consisted of lettuce leafs almost in full , 3 choices of dressing, pickles, olives and one other item, and hard boiled eggs. No vegetables, no cheese, no croutons. A little of desserts were on this table as well as fresh fruit. My other plate almost everything I tried that was deep fried was so hard I was afraid I'd break a tooth. Chicken was dry and hard. Sweet and sour sauce was not good. Vegetable egg roll had a mushy paste inside instead of vegetables. Nothing was fresh tasting. Wonton was soggy not crisp. After these two plates I Decided enough was enough and I left. Not a big fan of buffets especially with the spread of the virus, but China Star was recommended by a local so we decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was and how fresh the food tasted. I loved the fact that they were extremely diligent about replacing items that ran low or weren't hot anymore. One of the largest Chinese buffets in North Dakota. Always clean and friendly. Food is always hot and well tended. Sushi is the best I've ever had at a buffet. Li Su was right on top of my refills. Ok, so yes, this is a Japanese/Chinese/American/Mongolian BBQ buffet. That said, yes, I am giving it 5 stars. I was pleasantly surprised with the variety and quality of what they are putting out. There is eel on the sushi buffet, the Mongolian grill is fairly extensive, and they even had duck. Granted, the tuna was super high grade, nor was the duck the same quality you would get at a China town butcher, but considering you are paying about $15 for dinner, its a steal. They also have all the other hallmark options for a Chinese buffet, sweet and sour chicken, general Tso, lo mein, etc. I frequently saw cooks with walkie talkies calling back to the kitchen (in Mandarin of course) what dishes needed to be refilled. They have a very good buffet with a variety of foods to choose from. There's a Mongolian Grill where you can make your own, a standard Chicken and Seafood Buffet but with some extra options, and a sushi bar. The food is fresh and often replenished and tasty. Welp.... all I can say is gross, gross, and more gross!!! I ordered a mushroom beef combo... the beef was spoiled. When the waitress came over to see how the meal was going, I politely told her that the meat was spoiled. She apologized and stated that she would speak to the kitchen manager about it. Clearly the kitchen manager took it personal. He started screaming in a language I couldn't understand. Anger is understood universally. The waitress came back to my table and asked me if I wanted something else. I politely declined but was thinking... "not even if you paid me to lady" They even had the nerve to give me the bill. Smh. If you like all-you-can-eat Chinese food at impossibly low prices then you probably don't like good Chinese food, and you'll love the China Star Buffet. Did I mention they have sushi? And a Mongolian BBQ station? That's right! For one very low price you can gorge yourself on, not one, not two, but three nation's cuisines, all under the same roof. I didn't count all of the available dish options between the three buffets (because that could take days) but you would think with that many it would cost at least $30 per person. Highlights: Judging by the appearance of the sushi I would say the fishmonger waits weeks between visits from these people. At the Mongolian BBQ station the meat was all thawed and swimming in it's own mess. Oh, and listen to this, the guy cooking the food dumped our bowls on the drum THEN turned it on. As food runs low on the buffet line the employees dump "fresh" replacements on top - so, eat from the top, don't dig. Look we ate here on a dare, and I never lose a dare. But sometimes I pay a price for that and this was one of those times. So, why two stars instead of one? Well, because you should know better! read more

Great value between sushi, made to order Mongolian stir fry, and classic Chinese buffet

I tried this place out for delivery because of the other positive reviews of the delivery service. Both the woman that took my order and the guy that delivered were pleasant and efficient. The delivery was faster than expected. Unfortunately, the food was just kind of blah. I ordered Mongolian beef, General Tso's chicken, and crab rangoon. My intention was to eat dinner and then save the rest for lunches for the next few days. The portion sizes were more than adequate, however, the meat in both the dishes was rubbery and strange. The mongolian beef plate was mostly undercooked onions, which, were oddly enough better tasting than the beef. The chicken was also strange. The rice that came with was decent...but it was just plain white steamed rice. I wasn't impressed by my experience, and I probably won't try this place again. I can't recommend it. read more

Great service and a huge quantity of food. The servers are super nice and very fast about refilling your drinks or removing your dirty plates. The chairs/tables/booths have definitely seen better days. I consider myself a slim guys and I thought that the booths seemed a bit small. They have an amazing selection of food and keep the trays regularly refilled Sushi Buffet - Not many unique types of fish here. Most of the sushi here consist of cream cheese, avocado and imitation crab. Mongolian Grill - Pretty much like any other Mongolian grill. Fill you bowl up with noodles and meat, and they will cook it for you. There is a button for you to press if the guy is not there. Desert Selection - tons of ice cream and fresh fruit Chinese/American Food - the meat dishes (snow shrimp, sweet and sour chicken, mongolian beef and etc) have a lot more sauce on them than I would like. The meat did not really taste like meat. I would recommend going to the Mongolian Grill for that meat instead. They only have two types of rice, white and a golden colored rice. Kind of disappointed by the lack of fried rice. The chowmein has a extremely high ratio of veggies to noodles as well. Appetizer: I'm not sure, but I think there is taco meat in the house special egg roll. The crab rangoon has a very small amount of crab and cheese in the middle. Review of Sunday buffet (dinner buffet). First of all I don't usually have high hopes when it comes to Chinese food buffets so my expectation was set accordingly. I just moved to Bismarck so I've been forcing myself to try all the restaurants. Hot food selection is good. A lot of slight variations of pork and chicken. The house chicken is very good. Everything else is as you expect it from Americanized Chinese food places. Mongolian Bbq was very good with good selection of sauces and flavoring. Sushi was dry and bland- not the highlight of my meal. Eggroll was excellent and so was the Chinese donut. Probably a good deal for lunch during the week but at 12.95 its a little steep for the quality. If you are here for the quantity and selection- this is better than the buffet in the Kirkwood mall (that place was inedible). read more

We went today and it was fabulous. I dont care for most Chinese buffets but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The staff were very polite and attentive, we never had a drink go dry. The host was rude when he seated us. The Buffet was over cooked and cold. The variety and flavor was average however the products were cold. The stir fry was served hot off the grill but the flavor was flat. The sodas were flat. Never had a wanton that was that disgusting - the center was soggy and the end were like concrete. I've eaten at China Star a lot in the past year and a half, both eating in at the buffet and getting delivery. Delivery is always on time and always arrives hot, and they like to toss in a few free cans of soda, which is cool. I've generally been pretty happy with everything I've gotten there, and definitely recommend their hot and sour soup, their Mongolian beef, and their seafood special soup. As for their buffet, they have pretty decent sushi for being a buffet. I've never been unhappy with what I've gotten, and it's decent quality for a $14 all you can eat buffet. They also have some interesting stuff out from time to time like prime rib and crab legs, which is cool. The shao mine which someone else posted a picture of is really good at this place, and I always make sure to grab some before I get done stuffing myself full of sushi. I've also generally been pretty satisfied when I get stuff other than sushi and shao mine from the buffet. I've always had great service here, rarely ever having to wait much for a drink refill or for them to grab my empty plates. read more
