I used Richard Hughes plumbing for four years and was initially happy with the work they did. However, it seems Richard has retired and has allowed his sons to take over. Unfortunately the quality of the work has declined significantly, which I had noticed the past few times I had used them, culminating in my latest experience (which will definitely be my last). I had to buy a new dishwasher and decided to get a new kitchen faucet as well, since I didn't like my old one and figured I might as well have them install it for me while they were here. So, they came over one afternoon and "installed" (I'm using that word loosely) both, but to say the quality of the work they did was poor is being too kind. The dishwasher was installed in a way that was totally crooked with a weird piece of plywood sticking out at the bottom from where the previous dishwasher had been secured. They basically just shoved it inside of the cabinet without securing it. (They were supposed to screw it in.) They also hadn't removed the plastic coating from the front of the dishwasher door until AFTER they put the handle on, so there was plastic hanging out on the sides that I couldn't entirely remove since the handle was on top of it. It looked absolutely terrible and was not in any way secured, so within a week it was moving around within the cabinet. The faucet, unfortunately, was even worse because at least with the diswasher I wasn't afraid it was going to fall off. Both the faucet and the base wobbled around to the point that I was afraid it was going to come off after just a few days of use. Just like the dishwasher, it clearly had not been secured correctly and just sort of thrown on. What annoyed me about that, however, was that I specifically asked the two guys that he had sent out if the faucet I had purchased would work with my existing countertops and they assured me it would. So, I called Richard and pretty politely (at least at first) let him know that I was not happy with the work that had been done, mistakenly thinking that he would stand behind his work and come fix the issues. However, instead, he became incredibly defensive. When I explained the issue with the dishwasher, he told me that my "bad cabenetry wasn't [his] problem" and that it was my responsibility to have taken the protective plastic off the front of the door. By the time that we moved on to the faucet, I will admit that I was pretty annoyed and my tone wasn't the most friendly. I explained to him that I had shown it to the guys and asked them specifically if it would work and they assured me it would be able to be installed in my countertops (which are marble and had holes pre-cut into them) that it clearly didn't. He actually asked me (and I am not making this up), "Well, how are we supposed to know if it will fit or not?" He then said it was only their responsibility to install what I had bought, not to give me advice on what would work. Seriously? I informed him that, as a plumber, it his (and his crew's) job to know whether or not a faucet will work in a specific setting. He didn't agree. Of course, he then said, "But I'll still come out and look at it for you." I told him not to bother and that I would hire someone else to come out and fix what his employees had screwed up. I was honestly SHOCKED that he not only wouldn't stand by his work, but that he would basically blame a customer who had literally given him at least a thousand dollars worth of business, if not more. Fast forward to today, when I have a lowly handyman at my house who was able to fix both issues in less than an hour and said that both issues were due to laziness and the workmanship was very poor. (And it turns out the faucet does, in fact, fit just fine and can be secured but that they had assembled it totally incorrectly which was why it wobbled around so much. Why was I not surprised?) Tl; dr, don't use Richard Hughes Plumbing unless you want to overpay for bad work and then be blamed for the issues yourself. read more

Based on the address listed above, I called to set up an on-site estimate for some remodeling we want to have done at our home that is within a few miles of the address listed on yelp. He proceeded to tell me that he really doesn't do work in this area because it doesn't "pay" to do work here, and that he mostly does work in the West U/Bellaire area. I thought he may have misunderstood where exactly I live, because we also live inside the loop on the Northside. He confirmed that he knew where I live, but came back again and said that due to traffic he does not do work in this area. I then asked him what his exact radius is, and he said that it was none of my business. Then he seemed to get really aggressive and repeated that he does not do work in my area and said, "What do you want, blood?". Based on the great reviews here, I was going to keep his name handy for my friends that DO live in his radius. That being said, he does not work or operate in the Northside of the loop (Heights, Lindale Park, Garden Oaks, Northside Village, Brookesmith, Woodland Heights, etc.). If you live in this area, call someone else who is willing to drive the 10 miles to do some work for you. read more
