Quality of care is lousy compared to UCLA or USC Keck. The attitude of physicians is lousy compared to truly competent doctors. Many think the adjunct of UCLA after their name is an improvement in care, but it's not. I've seen Hernandez, Spelts and Casteneda and am underwhelmed at best. Hernandez and Spelts are dismissive and rude. Castaneda is lovely, has a terrific bedside manner but seems to do the minimal needed to diagnose and treat. She also misses obvious, major issues on radiology and dismisses patient complaints. Finally, there is no way to enter the building in TO if you are disabled, on crutches, wheelchair bound--- without human assistance. There are a number of buttons to push, none of them allow access to the building via automatic door opening . It is not ADA compliant, and when I mentioned it to the MD his answer was that SCOI doesn't own the building. I found that irrelevant. I would hope that he would raise the issue appropriately with the appropriate person, so that his patients can safely enter the building without help. read more

SOCI I didn't mind he was so late to the appointment, but to not introduce himself to the patient nor acknowledge my presence as the family care giver was uncomfortable. He wouldn't even look at me which was weird, until my family member introduced me. However...My goal was to help my family member get the care they needed, get a plan and get them out of pain. I thought maybe he was having a bad day. I was surprised that Mr. Spelts did not reference the pages of SOCI questions of health history, even when I mentioned he might want to look at them. I was surprised he didn't have a transcriber in the room and was not really listening to what we were saying. He was inaccurate and aggressively twisted what I said - which was very strange. It actually felt like he didn't want to do any procedures, because he didn't have time and wanted to leave - I finally asked him if he had run out of time. He made a comment under his breath about the insurance and dismissed coverage, so that was kind of illuminating. I found him to be arrogant, dismissive and passive aggressive during the appointment - I even had to ask multiple staff members if he was a doctor. read more

Family has seen Dr Spelts for years and had very good care. Several years ago he successfully repaired my daughters hand after a car accident, did husbands carpal tunnel surgery, has worked up my shoulder and provided care. Most recently has been taking care of my 94 year old mother for arthritis in her hands. read more

Dr. Richard J. Spelts Jr. spent maybe 15 minutes talking to me during my appointment (the rest of the time I talked to his nurse and his MA, so total appointment time was about 30 minutes) and charged me $ 1282 for that visit using some code for initial visit more than 30 minutes. Which is ridiculous, frustrating, and extremely disappointing. He definitely does not care about his patients if he can charge this amount for initial office visit without even making a diagnosis. I will need go to this office again. And will never refer my patients or my friends to this office because of my frustrating experience there. read more

Zero stars, I have never been treated so poorly by what is supposed to be a professional medical organization. I personally have been misdiagnosed by Dr Grossman and made to suffer needlessly for several years, and I was also made to wait 90 minutes by Dr Spelts to not see a Dr because I left out of pure frustration. Today Dr Spelts was impatient, raising his voice, disagreeing with my Wife and finally TELLING us to get a new Dr. Unprofessional and argumentative is what we experienced today. Please save yourself time pain and frustration and go anywhere else but SCOI !!! I found Dr. Spelts after researching PRP treatment through SCOI, but was a bit leery about the visit because of the mixed reviews. After seeing him a few times I can honestly say he is a great physician who is extremely knowledgable, with an easy going and caring manner. Came into Dr. Spelts with a lot of knee pain and he got me into the MRI very quickly when other doctor was taking forever because it was a work comp. case. He had a great bedside manner was kind and got me back in quickly to explain the results thoroughly. He took the time to make sure I understood what was going on with my knee. I really appreciated that because a lot of times with work comp you don't get treated like a person and you're in pain for a long time but he got me answers so that I could move on and figure out my plan from there. I had the second appointment of the day and I was early. I was showed an exam room and waited patiently. I heard the doctor just outside casually visiting with the previous patient for more than half an hour. When he finally came in to see me more than an hour after my scheduled appointment he didn't apologize for wasting my time. And when I said something about how long I had been waiting he said that he had been with a patient. Aside from the fact that he didn't help me with my frozen shoulder, his arrogance and attitude is disgusting. I would stay away from him at all costs. Then the office manager for SCOI had the nerve to back the doctor. Appalling. Doctors do not walk on water; people deserve respect. And when someone takes something from me that can never be replaced, TIME, they are selfish, rude and inconsiderate. read more

Misdiagnosed over and over even with advanced diagnostics (3 MRIs, radiographs, etc). Told me my chronic back and foot pain was due to one leg being longer than another, then a stress fracture, then nerve pain. I was in an air cast for 3 months with no improvement and on disability because I was in so much pain. Then I found a different orthopedist who diagnosed me with an autoimmune condition and within 2 months of seeing my rheumatologist (whom he recommended) I was pain free. Now I have run 2 more marathons. I wasted thousands of dollars and several months with this practice- via 2 doctors and one nurse practitioner. I recommend trying somewhere else. It was also very difficult communicating with their Drs due to their phone system. The receptionists in Thousand Oaks are very snippy if you get a live person. The second star is because their radiology staff is well trained and the office is clean. read more

Honestly, I am surprised with these negative reviews. I have seen Dr. Spelts on several occasions over a 7 year period and have been impressed with his services. Nice bedside manner, sense of humor, explanation of symptoms and proper diagnoses both times. Recommended and excellent surgeon both times. 5-10 minutes wait time on average. Efficient, friendly staff. I will continue to visit his office and utilize SCOI. Thank you Dr. Spelts for helping to fix me but hopefully I never have to visit your office again (due to injury) ;) read more

My 13 year old daughter had gone to see Dr. Spelts due to an ankle injury, We took an MRI. He diagnosed her with having high ankle sprain!!He put her in a medical boot and crutches. It was not getting better, he then recommended we see a surgeon. When I heard that, we decided to get a 2nd opinion, We saw Dr. Jung. Within 5 minutes he said, She DID NOT have a high ankle sprain, She had stress reaction, which had gotten worse because Dr. Spelts had put her in a medical boot and crutches!! He not only misdiagnosed my child but no thanks to him made it worse!!! Today, she is much better thanks to Dr. Jung!! read more

Misdiagnosed again. I went to see Doctor Spelts for foot pain. I had exsisting plantar fasciitis in both feet, but something felt different in my right. I thought that I had fractured my foot working out. I explained to Doctor Spelts that I had burning pain in my right foot and calf suddenly during a run. I was specific as to where the pain was on my foot. That day he diagnosed me as having heel spurs in both feet. He never even addressed the pain on the outer part of my right foot or explained what was causing the burning sensation. I asked for a doctor's note to take some time off of work since I work in public safety. I explained that I work on my feet for 12 1/2 hours a day and wear heavy boots with added weight on my body. He told me I could continue working and did not need time off. Since my job covers injuries during workouts, I put in a workmans comp claim. I went to see a doctor that was recommended by the city I work for. After a conversation with the doctor, he immedately advised me that the burning pain was not plantar or heel spurs. I was told the burning pain was from inflammation due to tendinitis. I was told I needed an MRI. I am now in an orthopedic boot pending the possibility of a cast because I have moderate torn tendons in my foot. It still upsets me that Doctor Spelts did not believe that I was in pain at work and refused to give me a note. I even called his nurse asking for a note since I had explained several times that the pain prevented me from runnng which is part of my duties at work. He still refused. It makes me angry to think that I went to see a doctor for help since I could not workout, walk my kids to school or even perform my duties at work and my symptoms were dissmissed. I don't even want to know what his salary is because he is absolutely worthless to any patient he treats, and does not deserve doctor's pay. I will be contacting the Medical Review Board to lodge a complaint. read more

Great doctor , ready to listen to you as patient and very honest . Also the waiting time is fair and the office staff efficient and courteous. I don't believe most of the bad reviews but I can recommend dr. Spelts without hesitation. read more
