The last time I saw Dr Marvel was years ago. However, I vividly remember being abused of being an addict and ordered to get out of his office. He also told me I was crazy for suggesting trigger point injections, which he claimed didn't exist and I was making stuff up. After that, I didn't go back - and he had me so convinced the pain was imaginary that when I had an ectopic pregnancy rupture, I didn't go to the ER for over a week. I was rushed into emergency surgery and almost died because of his mind games. Last week, I had a hysterectomy, which had pathology confirm I was suffering from adenomyosis all these years. Not in my head, not imaginary. W and my surgeon just suggested trigger-point injections to manage post-op pain. I wasn't making those up, either. I would not recommend Dr. Marvel to anyone suffering from chronic pelvic pain. He's not worth it. read more

I came to Dr. Marvel at the recommendation of my primary care doctor, Shawna Reshard and because I needed a second opinion. My GYN, Dr John Rogers, recommended a hysterectomy without examination. His recommendation felt weird considering my last visit with him was over a year ago and my last MRI showing adenomyosis was back in 2012. I did not feel comfortable making such a permanent decision at such a young age considering it felt rushed and uninformed. My primary doctor did order a new ultrasound that only showed fibroids (I was aware of those and they were not the cause of the pelvic pain I'd experienced for years postpartum). When I initially met Dr. Marvel, I thought he was kind of a prude, very smart and a little weird. I notice the smallest things---like, it appears that he bites his nails incessantly from the look of them. That concerned me. Notes high anxiety or nervousness, but we proceeded. On my first visit, there wasn't any type of exam outside of my lying on my back and him pressing on the left ovary and then the right ovary. He walked me into his office and told me I had pelvic congestion syndrome. He recommended a hysterectomy. He gave me the option to have my cervix removed and the vagina capped. He warned me that most women complain of pain associated with sex with the capping. I asked many questions because my main issue was pain and quality of life and getting back to a healthy sex life. I didn't want to create more pain. He made no guarantees, as most surgeons, but pretty much told me the only other option would be to totally obliterate the uterine lining and go into menopause. Tough pill to swallow at 37 years old. I asked more questions. I really looked to him for his recommendations. We did a laparoscopic hysterectomy on 7/3/2018. We kept the left ovary (because he said if it later caused pain we could remove it but it could do the work of both and prevent menopause), removed the uterus and kept the cervix (because he was certain the pain was from the uterine shifting, adenomyosis, fibroids, congestion syndrome or a combo of all of the above). I went into the surgery VERY weary. I thought I would not wake up from anesthesia. I even wrote a quick note to my husband and told him to open in the event of my death. I told the anesthesiologist that I was worried about dying and not waking up. My husband said, "I don't think it's wise for them to move forward with surgery if your mind is in a bad state." I had already paid the upfront coinsurance required to book the surgery. I was already at the surgery center. It felt too late to back out. But I have never been so afraid of surgery in my life (and I've had a meniscus repair, cesarean and two trigger thumb releases). I regret the surgery so much. Even when I went in for my post-surgery follow-up, the bedside manner was poor. I brought my husband with me. Dr. Marvel walked in with a student, didn't acknowledge or speak to my husband. Talked to the student the entire time and then told us to wait in his office after peeking at my incision. My husband said, "He's rude." So, when he came into his office, I introduced my husband to avoid any continued discomfort. Nonetheless, he still continued to address me and direct his attention to me only. The lab workup (tissue and organ stuff sent to lab post-surgery) showed nothing worthy of surgery. Not even a severe case of adenomyosis. And now, I'm STILL in pain. I still have a cycle that requires pads at least on day one. I can literally feel my one ovary ovulating and working overtime. When I went for my annual woman's wellness visit (because I still have my cervix, paps are still required), she was confused. I went to a new GYN, Dr. Tabitha Andre in Alexandria. I wish I had found her first. She was really disappointed that I still had my cervix. She was very disappointed that I'm still having lots of pain due to my cervix. She recommended birth control to give my one ovary a rest. Considering a past history of fertility treatments and all, she said my ovary has been working overtime for years and needs to 'go to sleep' for lack of a better term. I'm back on birth control (which I hate), still in pain, still having cycles, and a very ugly belly button scar. I really wish I had done more research. I really wish I hadn't been so exhausted from being in pain from 2012-2018...so exhausted that I failed to keep researching. I really wish I had chosen another doctor. I really wish things went differently. I should've listened to my intuition because there is absolutely nothing I can do to change the outcome at this point. I'm sure that Dr. Marvel helps his other pelvic pain patients, but he didn't serve my wife well at all. She has been diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis and we went to Dr. Marvel thinking that she could get some relief from the chronic, severe pain she suffers on a daily basis. He started by using a bladder instillation that he said helps most of his IC patients - for my wife, it made the condition worse, causing us to visit the hospital for severe pain twice the following weekend. Instead of stopping the treatments, he wanted her to get them 3 times a week for 6 weeks! He also prescribed Gabapentin in such a large dose, my wife's other doctors suggested that she stop it all together. The dose was at or above what is suggested for patients. We won't be going back to Dr. Marvel - he caused us to spend a boatload of money with bad results. read more

Dr. Marvel has given me my life back, twice. He treated me from 2009-2010 and now I'm currently under his care for a separate issue. Both times, he was the only doctor to correctly diagnose me. Both times, I was doubtful of his diagnosis at first but quickly realized that he was right. His communication style is direct and to the point; he isn't the touchy feely type. I understand that can rub some people the wrong way. However, he's always been respectful to me and answered all of my questions. He takes thorough notes every time I visit (in his computer, so don't be offput If he types while you talk) and remembers every detail of my medical history, even years later. He also has a pretty firm belief in his diagnosis and courses of treatment, but I've brought up holistic approaches that I use in combination with his treatments, and he's been open to hearing what else works for me. In order to get the most out of your time with him, I recommend coming prepared: bring notes so you can describe the timeline and details of your symptoms as specifically as possible, write down any questions you have for him, etc. I did this and it helped a lot. Overall, I want to counter the negative reviews and say that I've had 2 separate spans of good diagnosis and treatment from Dr. Marvel. No other doctor was able to help me at all, but he did - twice. I went to see Dr. Marvel for severe pelvic pain. Please don't go there expecting an instant cure and you will walk out feeling better. He will help your body heal from nerve damage that is causing your pain. I have found his bedside manner to be top notch. Dr. Marvel will listen to your concerns and address them as he sees fit. I basically didn't know where to go after seeing my gyn 9 times in 3 months. I was fortunate enough to google Dr. Marvel and that he was half an hour from me. I am astounded that Dr. Marvel has had some poor comments. I have seen so many doctors over the past 4 years due to a complication after back surgery that left me with 24 hours of chronic pain, burning and numbness in the most sensitive area of a women's body. Even though I complained to the Neurosurgeon who did my surgery 4 years ago and the Urologist that he referred me to , absolutely nothing was done. Two years later I am referred to Pain Management doctors who were only interested in trying an Intrathecal Pain Pump with medications that caused me to hallucinate and develop a loss of memory and severe itching, and then advanced to different types of Stimulators. Nothing has helped and of course you start to become depressed and have anxiety due to the fact that you feel hopeless and have no real life. Your bed becomes your best friend. Thank heavens for the Internet and Google. I found Dr. Marvel's name and read everything I could on what he specializes in. I did not care that I had to travel a little over an hour to see him. Not one doctor has ever met me at his office door like Dr. Marvel. No doctor has taken the time to give me a thorough exam and then talk to me and my husband in detail of his findings and what his plan of treatment would be. I knew immediately that I had found the right doctor. I am a nurse and know better than to base my decision on poor doctor reviews. Yes, we are now in the age of doctor hunting because many doctors just want to see patient after patient and that just results in lack of time to spend with his/ her patients. This is not Dr. Marvel. Dr Marvel is fantastic. He diagnosed me so fast and was even able to describe to me my exact symptoms! I had been dealing with my previous doctor for 8 years who had no idea what was wrong with me and told me to "suck it up". After that I searched for a second opinion and that's when I was referred to Dr Marvel. He is a professional doctor who listens to you, something rare these days. I went to Dr Marvel on a emergency basis with a level 10 pain . I had been to the ER & Pelvic Health (both treated me terrible ). When I went in to see Dr. Marvel I had some what of a idea on how I ended up with the Pudental Neuralgia. It went from a 0 to a 10 in 3 days. I was out of my mind in pain. He assured me he could help me and took the entire hour to get all of my medical history and he WAS listening to me . Having other medical issues and dealing with uncaring drs one to many times , this was not the case with Dr Marvel. I felt comfortable and trusted his plan for me. I went back today after a nerve block that I had a week ago. He did the block right there on the spot knowing I couldn't leave in that level of pain and answered my emails quickly the days following. I'm not saying others haven't had other experiences because we all need different things. Me personally I'm happy I found him because when no one else could help me and I was beyond desperate for relief . He saved me. I'm a week out and still not 100% but 60 % better than I was ! In reading some of the reviews on here, I am frankly baffled by the negative comments. Dr. Marvel (and his team) went above and beyond to help me through some really tough times over the past 5 years. He moved offices and is now 75 miles-one way-from my house, but that doesn't matter as I would follow Dr. Marvel across the country if necessary. I was referred to Dr. M in 2007 after going to numerous doctors, having several exploratory surgeries, and losing hope of ever getting relief from my chronic pelvic pain. But, my last gyn said she heard rave reviews about Dr. M and how he's helped "special cases" like me. How grateful I am that I listened to her and gave Dr. M's office a call-I had no idea it would change my life forever. My first meeting with Dr. M was unlike any other appt I've ever had. He listened to me, asked questions about not only my medical history, but wanted to know how my pain was affecting me emotionally, what I was doing to help manage the pain up until that point, what my expectations were for pain relief, and how I felt about surgery if that was a path we may need to go down. For the first time, I felt I wasn't alone on what turned out to be a very tough journey. After several months, numerous appts, different types of treatment/medication, and some ups and downs with the pain relief, we decided that I needed a partial hysterectomy. This was something that no other doctor would even talk with me about because of my situation--single, in my late 20's\early 30's at the time, no kids--but Dr. M was different. He actually listened to me and believed me when I said I was more than ok with never having kids (we talked about it several times throughout my treatment), I was tired of dealing with the pain and after we tried everything else with not much success, he performed the surgery. Everything was great, until about 2 months post op. I was in terrible pain and called for an appt only to find Dr. M was on vacation. BUT, shortly after getting off the phone with Gwen (the wonderwoman at the front desk), I received a call from Dr. M-calling me from his vacation! Because he wasn't in town and couldn't see me right away, he suggested I go to the ER and get a CT scan--just to make sure to cover all the bases. The CT scan showed A LOT of spots on pretty much every organ. After getting the results, he told me that his office had set up an appt for me to get a PET scan in the next few days. He called me to his office after he received the results from that scan. I was impressed by all of the extra hard work and the above-and-beyond the call of duty help that Dr. M and his fabulous office crew were giving me. He could have easily pushed me off to someone else and be done with it, but he took the time to go over my scan results, helped me find the right doctors, surgeons, etc. to help me find out what the spots were and how to treat them. This was way out of his realm of "speciality" but he helped me because he genuinely cares for his patients. After A LOT of doctor appointments, tests, this specialist and that specialist, and a biopsy later, it turns out I have sarcoidosis. While running around to all these appointments and being scared for whatever was happening to me, I was still experiencing pelvic pain. I needed to have my cervix removed. (it was left in during my partial hysterectomy because it was ok at the time) He worked with another surgeon so that I could have my spleen removed (due to the sarcoidosis) at the same time I was having my cervix removed to lessen the trauma to my body--it had already been through so much. Again, this was just another example of how he and his staff went out of their way to be by my side during my long and bumpy journey to freedom (or relative freedom) from pelvic pain. I still see Dr. M as I am not 100% pain free, however, it's only every 3 months now (in the beginning it was up to 2-3 times a week) and I am over 85% better than I was just a few years ago. I have a life now and enjoy things again with little to no pain. Dr. Marvel changed my life. He doesn't like it to say that because he says that HE didn't change it, but he helped ME change my life--patient self-care is just as important to healing as the doctor's care. He's absolutely right. Attitude has A LOT to do with it. I knew he could help me, I knew it may not be an easy path, but I knew with Dr. Marvel as my doctor, I was going to be ok. And I'm better than that...I'm GREAT--Thanks to Dr. Marvel and his fabulous office team. I don't think I'll ever be able to thank them enough for all they have done for me. I would recommend any friend, family member, anyone to Dr. Marvel. He truly is a genuinely kind and caring doctor-which can be hard to find. I treasure him and his staff and know I wouldn't be as happy and as healthy as I am now without them. My OBGYN referred me to Dr Marvel when she couldn't diagnose a chronic problem I was experiencing. She said that he was the guy that she referred patients to when she just could not figure out what was wrong. In other words, he is a specialist in diagnosing odd issues or when there may be multiple issues going on at once. Dr. Marvel took an incredibly detailed history and we went from there. Unlike any other doctor, he tested for the obscure and finally figured out my problem and solved it. I don't work for him and this is not a fake review. I agree with other reviews that he is a little bit odd, sort of like a Dr. House character, but he knows his stuff! Like my OBGYN promised, he fixed my problem when no one else could (or even really tried). Don't go to Dr Marvel if you are looking for hugs, go to Dr. Marvel when you want to get to the bottom of your problem. read more

Worse "doctor" ever. I want to give no stars but, it's not an option. I would like to advise any and every woman against seeing this so-called specialist. I already have a doctor who I see regarding a pelvic/skin issue but, wanted to get a second opinion since I have heard that Marvel specialized in this area. First of all, I made sure with his staff that he would be able to answer specific questions; otherwise I would have just stuck with my original doctor. I was advised that he would be able to. Finally the day of my appointment, I arrive 10 minutes early and no one greets me, no hello- no warm welcome. Also, I specifically made my appointment the first one of the day and he was still about 20 minutes late! Then when I walked into his office, no smile, no hello, no hand-shake-he didn't even bother to introduce himself! I felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave at that point because I just had a horrible feeling but, I stayed. Not only did he not offer me any new advice, he told me he didn't deal with the specific questions I had regarding my own unique experience. I told him I asked specifically about that. No response. Then the exam- he took labs even though I had no complaints about an infection. And, without any warning, he stood up and jammed his fingers inside me. This "doctor" has absolutely no manners nor bedside manner at all! I was in shock and more than disgusted at his behavior. I had asked if I could send him a biopsy result and he just pushed aside my questions and all concerns. He did not exhibit any care whatsoever towards a new patient and I can't imagine others experiences have been very different. After my appointment, I instructed the front desk to not process my labs as there was no need. Gwen told me they would not. Then, I even asked for the billing department because I was informed that his appointments were anywhere from $400 to $600 and I REFUSED to pay that much for a 30 minute appointment when I was told it would be an hour and a half to adequately address all of my questions and concerns. When I have seen other specialists in this area, my appointments were 2 hours at least. So when the billing department called me, it was actually Dr. Marvel! I told him how appalled I was at his treatment and all he said was a very rude, dismissive, and paltry "sorry". He was not sorry at all. I told him to not send in the labs and he confirmed that he wouldn't. I asked him how much the appointment would be and he could not answer! It was beyond ridiculous! I asked him over and over and he couldn't tell me! I kept saying Gwen told me it was between $400-600 and he couldn't give me an answer. Then, he asked me how much my insurance covered and then came up with the number I would have to pay after insurance...yet he couldn't give me the price he would be charging? Just plain ridiculous. Then I get my bill and not only did he charge me $685 for a crap visit, he sent in the labs when he said he would not! This is the most miserable doctor I have ever met in my 38 years. Dr. Marvel lacks medical ethics. Despite his nice communication skills with patients in the office, the only thing he seems to think about when seeing patients is MONEY! He charged me for an office visit twice more than 2 other doctors, whom I saw for the same symptoms. It's the first time in my experience that a doctor does not return patient's phone calls. Instead, his office assistant called me and said to schedule another appointment with the doctor, though all I needed was a referral for a test, since the symptoms didn't change but just got worse. (Of course, why to return a phone call for free instead of charging another $460 for an office visit.) Doctor's knowledge is doubtful too. No other doctor could confirm his diagnosis. read more

I first saw Dr. Marvel 9 years ago following a bladder suspension revision surgery, performed by one of "Baltimore's Top Docs" which was botched and left me with chronic, permanent, moderately severe, burning pain whenever I sit. The surgeon had allowed my pain to grow for 5 months following the surgery, doing nothing to determine what was wrong, not referring me to anyone else who would take the time to find out what was wrong, simply urging me to be patient. By the time I saw Dr. Marvel I was truly desperate. Dr. Marvel's History and Physical was the most complete that I have ever encountered, he provided me with a proper diagnosis on that first visit and started me on a non-narcotic pain medication which halved my pain level in 2-3 weeks. Simply having an accurate diagnosis was an enormous emotional benefit. My condition is such that I will almost certainly never be pain free but he was able to reduce my pain to a tolerable level. He is somewhat arrogant - is a pioneer, truly an expert in treating these miserable conditions that most other doctors fail at diagnosing and treating properly. He was the first doctor I visited who utilized electronic medical records, so, he types as he listens to you, which eliminates much eye contact, and is difficult for people to get used to. It is the same at my other doctors who have begun using electronic records. I suspect other negative reviewers may have expected a cure. Very few chronic pain conditions can be cured. Dr. Marvel is abreast of cutting edge technologies for treating chronic pelvic pain which can be a problem for insurance companies who have no problem with you continuing at your current pain level for years while waiting for the new technology to become mainstream. He does also utilize effective mainstream treatments first. I don't go to him because I expect him to become my friend. I go to him because he is one of only a dozen doctors in North America who are expert in treating my condition. I go to him because he was honest with me and didn't try to cover up for the surgeon, someone he knew and had worked with in the past, who caused my injury. I trust him. read more

Dr. Marvel gave me my life back. I was stuck in bed for months being misdiagnosed by gynecologist after gynecologist. Finally, I was properly diagnosed with pudendal neuralgia. With treatment, I was able to finish out my senior year and graduate high school. I feel so thankful to have been sent to Dr marvel. I've lived with GYN pain.. for a very long time and have been told by other doctors that i had to 'relax' or 'use more lube. Dr. Marvel saved my quality of life, I can't thank him enough! I have been a patient for 4 years. When I came to see him in 2008 I was getting worse and worse by the week, I had no idea what was wrong. I had pain and problems for 8 years. I saw multiple doctors over the years and no one was able to come up with a diagnosis, let alone something to relieve the pain. Proceed with caution! What I mean by this is, after listening to everything Marvel has to say, please check his advice with your own trusted physician first. Do not let him perform any type of procedure (even minor) on you without getting a second opinion. The exam I received was the most painful in my entire life, and I have had chronic pain issues for years, and have gone to many physicians. Marvel is extremely dogmatic about the narrow range of his diagnostic expertise, and does not consider any problem presented to be anything outside of 3 or 4 diagnoses, even if the symptoms do not fit. My problem turned out to be a gall bladder issue, but Marvel wanted to do a (extremely painful) bladder infusion for interstitial cystitis. He also recommended a hysterectomy, or at the very least, a powerful prostate cancer drug that would stop my menstrual cycle for 6 mos. Fortunately I am educated and experienced enough to know bunk when I hear it, but I would hate for him to get his hands on a trusting patient - he could cause real damage. read more

I came along with my wife to an appointment with Mr. Marvel (I refuse to call him a Dr).We should have known what was to come when the previous patient came out of his office in tears.He was very rude and condescending. He didn't even introduce himself or make eye contact. He injected my wife in her stomach (supposedly with an anesthetic) to "test her pain".He barely gave any warning of what he was doing, and my wife screamed in pain, and he had no reaction, sympathy, or made any attempt to calm her down.He seemed like a misogynist who got off on this. This injection only made things worse for the pain my wife was having.When we asked him questions, he kept reciting the same canned answer,and was visibly shaken and angry that we were asking him pointed specific questions.He insisted that my wife's previous surgery was on her right side, when it was obviously on her left. When we continued to calmly press him, he threw us out of his office!Wouldnt have believed it if I wasn't there to see it. I've seen others write "Dr. Marvel has given me my life back"- which is funny because as I was thinking of my review, those were the exact words that came to mind. I spent 2 years struggling with symptoms that felt so severe, they had a serious impact on my mental health. My regular gyn could not help me- and I tried time and time again with multiple doctors. It wasn't until 2 years later that I went back to my regular gyn in an act of desperation. Luckily, this practitioner knew about Dr. Marvel and referred me to him. After my first visit and a few weeks on the treatment plan he prescribed, I saw signs of improvement for the first time in 2 years. My depression associated with the health issue started to retreat as Dr. Marvel restored my hope in my health and my life. I have been with him for the last 8 years. I have had a few procedures and 1 major surgery with him. He always has been honest with me about everything. He has told me the pros and the cons of each procedure. When I started with him I was in so much pain. All I wanted was to get better quick but he told me that it would take a while and it did, but I finally started to feel better. I go through times when I only have to see him once a year; other years, I have to see him multiple times a year. He is always willing to listen to me. Also, he will always fit me in to his schedule, so he can help me to get better. If he wasn't my doctor I would not be here today as happy as I am. I cannot express to you how much he has helped me!! Ten years ago, a guy like this could get away with the level of incompetence he exhibits. Today, the internet brings people together to share their experiences in an open forum. There is no reason that a good doctor would get repeated negative reviews across several different websites if he was worth his salt. But the repeated negative reviews here and on other sites are not some sort of conspiracy. This guy is scary. Either he is incompetent, or he just hates women. Either way, you can decide for yourself. Take the advice of a suspiciously high number of patients (and their husbands!) who are trying to save you from their terrible experiences. If you are unsure about the veracity of these reviews, see for yourself, but please, do not allow him or any other doctor to examine you if even the tiniest part of you feels any reservation. Do not dismiss that instinct that says something isn't right. As women, we are taught to ignore that voice and to be polite or not complain - to our own detriment.Months before I saw Dr. Marvel, I saw a ton of negative reviews, and I was appalled. Two things squelched the voice that told me to stay away. One was a pre-visit questionnaire that was thorough and reflected a keen insight by its author. (In retrospect, I think it was borrowed from the Int'l Pelvic Pain Society). The other was my rationalization of the negative reviews. I figured that a dr who asked such insightful questions must know his stuff and that perhaps anyone who felt he was insensitive perhaps had not taken the time to educate herself about her condition and had perhaps frustrated the doctor. The opposite is true. If you understand medicine more than the average patient and dare to challenge this doctor with a little critical thinking, he will panic at the loss of control and the fear of being asked something he doesn't know. The people I respect most in this world have been those who are not afraid to admit that they may not have answers to everything. And they will follow up on promises to research and education themselves. This doctor is afraid that your questions will make him look incompetent, and if you question him, he will become defensive and will either lash out or shut down. Either way, you are wasting your time and your money. Please save yourself both and try someone else. Dr. Marvel is by far one of THE most amazing doctors I've had the privilege of meeting! For anyone experiencing chronic pelvic pain, we are so very fortunate to have this wonderful doctor so close on the east coast! My situation is very complex and multifaceted and ONLY he was able immediately to correctly diagnose and begin correctly treating me! He has an uncanny ability to decipher and figure out exactly what is causing your pain & why. He always is very attentive and LISTENS to what you're saying, never hurries you and very compassionate. If you're fortunate enough to already know you have a diagnosis of PN, Dr. Marvel is one of very few doctors able to diagnose & properly treat PN! I honestly don't know where I'd be right now, had it not been for him and wanted to share for anyone out there that is struggling and NOT being listened to or correctly diagnosed! Chronic pelvic pain and all the components that cause it and go along with it, can be a very debilitating and depressing thing to go through!
