HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. We walked in this cigar shop and a man around 30 or 40 in sweatpants, Adidas slides and dirty socks comes downstairs. The first red flag was noticing that the cigars are not humidified! There is a front door and then you walk into another door where the the cigars are. The second door is wide open, and not properly humidified. The man asked if we were veterans and we told him both of us were. The policy posted was 20% for veterans. He looked at us and said "I'll make it 50% off for you two!". We asked him about 3 or 4 cigars and ended up getting two of them. We went to put them back in their box and he says "I'll do it!". As if we couldn't figure it out for ourselves. He was rude to other customers that came in after us as well as some people that were just sitting outside at the patio table. We go to check out and ask if he needs to see our military ID and he says no and something about trusting veterans and their honesty. He tells us the total is 29.70. Which is much more than it should be with the 50% off he promised. I tip $5 because he was helpful finding a specific flavor. We noticed the price was way off but didn't say anything and let it go. We go across the street to Havana '59 to smoke and the cigars are COMPLETELY dried out. We had to order from the restaurant which were accurately priced and humidified. After dinner we walked back across to Richmond Cigar Factory and politely ask the man for a refund. We show him the dried out cigar, and slightly bent it to demonstrate how dried out it was and it ended up snapping in half. He says he can't refund us. We ask for a refund on the other unbroken one and bring up the fact that he lied about giving us a military discount. He tries to cover up his lie by saying he meant to say he was trying to "convince the owner to do 50% discount for vets", when he CLEARLY stated he would give us 50% off. He continued to argue with us about getting a refund. He told us that he's going to call the cops because "a lot of cops smoke cigars and can agree that they are good cigars". We tell him that's insane and then says we can just call the cops and then deal with it "in the courts". He walks away and goes behind the register and we follow him to the counter thinking he's about to refund us and he tells us to go to the other side of the store near the door. He comes back around with nothing and then starts looking out the windows for a person that may potentially come inside the store to "ask them for their unbiased opinion" on what a ideal moisture content of a cigar should be. He walks outside and we follow as well taking a seat at the patio table. Eventually a couple approaches the shop and he asks them if they're knowledgeable about cigars. The guy says he knows a little bit, and we explain the situation on how the cigars are complete garbage and how the seller won't give us a refund. I pick up the cigar that is snapped in half and show them how it crumbles. The couple walks away after noticing this store and seller are not worth lies and dried out, over priced cigars. The seller gets irritated and he goes back inside grabs a random twenty dollar bill and I ask him for the remaining $9.70 he owes me for the other one we couldn't smoke. He goes inside again and then slams the door and locks it. You are better off going to your local park, snapping a branch off a pine tree and smoking that. Anywhere but here! read more

I don't even know where to begin. From the over priced dried out cigars, to the shop keeper being so disrespectful that he jumped in my face with his hands waving around my head asking me in a yelling tone "What do you want!" He charged my friend and I 18 bucks per cigar, when asked why he told us to "Look around!" Referring to the location. I have lived in Richmond for 13 yrs, and I have never spent 18 bucks on a fat bottom Betty. When asked if hd could cut said 18 dollar cigar so that I could take it with me. He refused initially, then took it to the back and lopped it off with a box cutter. Tearing the cigar into pieces. I asked why he would do such a thing he simply stated "You wanted it cut right?" If someone is willing to get into your personal space because they know that they are wrong, and overprice your cigars go the opposite way!!! I want to believe that the owner is way more pleasant and kind. I want to believe that we can as POC support this POC owned business. However....that Saturday was both scaring and bewildering. I usually go to Havana connection but I was in the area so I stopped by. Really nice guy that was real helpful in letting me find what I was looking for however all the cigars are dry as a bone. I got my Rocky Patel and it was so dry the wrapper was cracking so I don't really think they have a proper humidor system in the shop. I stopped in here to get a cigar before hitting the Cuban place across the street. My cigar was totally dried out and so was my buddy's. The service was okay, but that doesn't change the fact that our $10 cigar sucked. I've been in cigar shops all over the country and this is one of the worse ones I've been to. Stopped in to see if they had the new Opus X 20th Anniversary sticks and they did - at $60/cigar which is over 3X the MSRP! I hope the Fuente distributor cuts them off for gouging customers. And right on the counter next to them I couldn't help but notice the "Cuban" Cohibas. Most likely fakes, even if they're legit (doubt it) they're illegal to sell in the States and was surprised to see them so boldly placed for sale. So I knew right away the credibility was missing and I wasn't going to waste my $$$ here. Updated from visit on 7/15/2013: Guy who works there was an a$$hat. I asked questions about the cigars and he acted as if I wasn't asking the right questions. For example, I named about 5 popular cigars I enjoy and hoped he could help me find a suitable match from the store. He couldn't, or have never smoked the cigars I named (gurkha cellar reserve, padron 3000, san christobal elegancia, etc.) He also couldn't tell me about the taste, draw, etc. on the cigars. I asked about the difference in smoke time between two clearly different sizes and widths. He said, "that is a dumb question since everyone's draw is different." While that's technically true, I could give an estimate on difference in smoke times on average between, say a Nub and a lancero or a 5.5 cigar that isn't as tightly packed. Loved this place and always made it my Richmond "Must Stop Through"...not as much anymore unless he's not there. Will add that the woman who owns it is very, very nice. But I wonder what the deal is if she lets an asshat work there... PREVIOUS THOUGHTS: Visited this store on a Sunday midday since I was visiting in the area. Heard about it from a patron at the Cigar Bar across the street (Havana 59). The people were super friendly in a sincere manner and answered all of my cigar-related questions well, without judgment and thoroughly. The most impressive part was that I was given a stick to try. At first I thought she was going to let me smell it but lo and behold, a lighter was open and there I was, puffing on an exquisite blend of cigar goodness. I stopped by the Richmond Cigar Factory as I was waiting for my reservation nearby. This is a classic no frills cigar shop. The owner Dave was a real gentleman, he knew a lot about cigars and did not try to up sell like a lot of stores do. He was very helpful and asked many questions so that he could recommend the perfect cigar for you. We ended up picking up a cigar and a few of the old cigar boxes he sold. The guys in the shop (not sure if they were just regulars hanging out) but they were really nice as well. All in all I really enjoyed the whole experience. read more

It's a small shop but has a decent selection, including some boutique blends that you don't find anywhere else. Prices are what you would expect for a cigar shop in a downtown area. It's right across from Havana 69, so you can grab a good stick and smoke it over there. They also have a couple seats outside, which my brother and I availed ourselves to on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Smoking inside is also permitted. read more

I don't know what experience others have had at this spot but mine has always been a positive one. I stop by every couple of weeks and the only challenge I have from time to time is parking. Not only do I enjoy the quality of RCF's cigars but the environment, location (only a few minutes from Varina) and the multiple blends- not brands provided. For "Richmonder's" that enjoy a smoke or two every now and then, its important to have a cigar lounge located downtown. RCF creates a unique culture for this area and is a must have for the Bottom. Lets keep Richmond's only downtown cigar lounge open.... and "Food L" I'm sure the folks down there know enough about other industry brands such as Gurkha and Padron. Next time you go, if you should ever visit again, just ask for a good cigar, smoke it, smile and laugh a little. read more

Richmond Cigar Factory was a monumental disappointment. I have visited cigar bars around the country and the experience my friend and I had last night was appalling. We initially started out, across the street at Havana 59 restaurant, bar and cigar club. We asked if the world series was on any tv in the Havana 59. We were told, "no, sorry." The guy sitting next to us said you need to run directly across the street to the Richmond Cigar Factory, they had good cigars where one could enjoy a good smoke and check out the game 4 of the World Series, and he guaranteed me the game would be on! He said to "tell them A.J. sent you!" Well, indeed it was! We strolled in around 10 PM and the worker informed us that they were open Saturday until 11 PM. He said plenty of time to grab a good cigar and see the last 2 1/2 innings of the game. So we loaded up on some nice cigars (dropped about 40 bucks on 2 cigars) and settled in to have a fine time with a nice smoke enjoying the world series. The worker on duty was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, about 15 minutes into our cigars, a guy identified as "Dave, the owner" comes in and starts turning off the lights. The worker informs us that Dave, the owner has decided, without explanation, to close the place down 40 minutes before the normal closing time. We were only about 1/4 of the way into the cigar and the game was at an exciting point. I asked the worker if we could stay 5 MINUTES to see the rest of the inning and puff a bit more on the cigars that we bought from them in hopes of enjoying them and watching the game. Much to my dismay, he, with embarrassment, came back and said, no, he wants to close right now, I am sorry. You have to leave. ............ The owner was such a jerk, he never had the kahunas to tell us directly, he stood outside in front of the store and had the employee do the dirty work. We strolled back across the street to Havana 59. They had great food and drinks, and the place was packed. My friend downloaded the MLB ap and we did the best we could following the exciting game to the end with periodic on-screen updates. Both my friend and I own our own businesses and we were shocked at how poorly Dave treated his customers, and how little he valued the customers. I have left only 2 online reviews in my life, but I feel that the Richmond Cigar Factory has definitely earned this poor review. If you want to enjoy a good cigar with great food, drinks, and atmosphere, try Havana 59, or any other place in Richmond that is NOT the Richmond Cigar Factory. Shame on owner Dave! Everything you would want in a Cigar shop smoking parlor. This is a small intimate shop that features their own hand rolled cigars. I was on vacation and wanted a place to have a smoke and I found this gem. Gary the owner, provided plenty of information about the hand rolled cigars they offered under their brand. I smoked a cigar I brought from my own collection, but left with a few torpedoes to add to my collection. I will definitely stop in again, when I am in RVA. read more

I'm new to the cigar world and as such, didn't know very much when I walked into this shop. I was greeted by Gary who could tell I was a cigar novice....which only made it worse. He belittled me and poked fun at me for not knowing much about cigars which completely turned me off immediately. They have zero selection other than their own brand that they make which are pretty highly priced. I bought two robustos for about 20 bucks...left the store feeling embarrassed and humiliated. Another thing that will make me never go there again is how I was lied to. After Gary proudly showed off his 4 flame torch lighter claiming it was $100.00 I found the exact same lighter "The Intimidator" in the next cigar shop I went to retailed for $29.95! I even found it online for cheaper...real cool dude, you're awesome. Also when I grabbed a business card that had another employee's contact info on it he snatched that card out of my hand and insisted I take his since "that other guy" has no idea about his job apparently....stay classy Gary. Awesome place! The manager Gary is very knowledgable about how cigars are made and what makes a good stick. He really makes you feel at home. The place is well kept with furniture that is very comfortable. But with that said, these cigars are the best I have smoked thus far. Everyone I had tasted mature with balance and flavor. In my option, I have not had a better cigar since....and I've had plenty. So thank you Richmond Cigar factory for making my experience pleasant and for always providing a great smoke. There are bigger B&M cigar stores with more brand selections, but you won't find another store with as good a atmosphere as RCF. From the time we walked in, Gary greeted us and immediately started talking like old friends. He made some recommendations and sat down and smoked with us. Just happened to walk by this past Saturday and saw the store. I have been enjoying cigars for about 6 years and currently have around 250 assorted manufacturer's and types in my humidor.Talked to Gary about the product line and bought 3 Figurado and 3 Gordo Maduros. My father in-law had a little problem with the burn on the first Figurado but I just had one with no issues. The Gordo on the other hand is one of the best freakin'g cigars I have ever had(thanks for the suggestion Gary). The flavor, burn and construction is second to "none". Go get 'em you wont be disappointed. read more
