My builder used Richmond decorating for my cabinets. I've had a horrible experience with this company. They used pens to cover up issues on the cabinet doors instead of replacing them and then claim they've been to my home 5 times since I've moved in. I didn't have a good experience with the woman in the flooring department. She could care less about returning my calls and I had a deadline. I purchased kitchen flooring from them and she upped the pricing on me three times!! Then she went on vacation and my contractor had to deal with someone else to get the job scheduled. Beyond horrible experience! I'll tell you the entire long story just for "good" measure. This company bought out another previously reputable business in Newport News. The Newport News location was the one I had previous experience with, with mostly positive results. We had a home built recently and this is the company the builder used for the hardwood and carpeting. The hardwood was a Shaw engineered hardwood and what was originally put down in our home was defective. Shaw inspected the flaws and issues and decided to replace it...so Richmond Decorating was in charge of making everything right. The Newport News location was, from what I was told, supposed to be in charge of the demo and reinstall but the Richmond location decided to veto Newport News' management and send an incredibly unprofessional and incompetent crew for the demo on the orders of the owner's son, Mr. Coates. The primarily Portuguese speaking crew arrived late both days, worked for an hour and then left stating their machines were broken and needed parts and repairing. Each time leaving one poor Portuguese man behind, on his knees, hand scraping adhesive to no avail. After being gone for 4 & a half hours the first day (because they drove from Chesapeake VA back to Richmond), the other two men returned, cleaned up, and left. Second day, two total men arrived an hour and a half late, unloaded a new machine, plugged it up, subsequently and immediately unplugged it, and reloaded it into their kidnapper van, repeating the basic events of the previous day...leaving one man behind hand scraping and gone for 5 hours this time. Eventually they did return with rented Home Depot machines (Home Depot is 3 miles from my house) that they did not even seem to know how to use, mind you. So, yeah, they return at 4:30 pm and start working. It takes them 3 hours to do the work and then they leave. At this point, I'm livid, my husband's livid, my children are acting like wild caged animals. We have been essentially held hostage in our home for 2 days for 4 and a half hours of work. Catastrophic professionalism in my opinion, hoping that does not seem too dramatic. We took off work, missed family and children's activities, witnessed no progress, and experienced complete and utter incompetence for almost 2 total work days...all on the orders of Mr. Coates who wanted to seemingly make some money off of Shaw footing the bill so he chose an inexpensive day crew instead of a reputable and experienced local company to demo the floor. Needless to say, we are not impressed and repeated calls to this Mr. Coates guy yielded absolute adverse results. Nothing but excuses and empty apologies, assurances that he would absolutely use the same crew over and over without pause. He spoke too candidly (including obscenities), unprofessionally, and very loudly over me...determined to have the last word. He adamantly told me that the glue in my home was different/difficult and that's why his crew had such a hard time. What? seriously? It was their (Richmond Decorating's) adhesive to begin with...ugh. I just told him that I had no interest in arguing with someone and let him go. It's just bad business and a poor representation of the Newport News location of the same name that used to be Tidewater Floors. It's actually a poor representation of the entire industry. Sad that customer service means absolutely nothing to this guy, but I guess being nice doesn't make them money. Shortcuts and excuses do. We had zero problems when the Newport News crew came in to do the reinstall. zero! They worked hard to try and balance out the just plain stupid debacle that were the demo days. I don't know if all of this even accurately describes how bad this experience was. Just the sheer waste of time, ineffectiveness, and inefficiency or progress. The Portuguese men seemed really nice btw just completely ill-prepared. I hope for your sanity, you'll consider using someone else for your flooring needs because these people do not care about your time or about work ethics and professionalism. Waste of money! I paid high dollar for a new carpet, rather than using Lowes' or Home Depot. Because it is a very large room, I was concerned about quality installation and seam visibility. I love the carpet, and the service was good, but guess what? The seam looks awful! They came back to look at it and gave me lots of excuses, but the bottom line is that I am stuck with it. Absolutely the worst. Like any contractor they are only as good as their sub contractors and RDC's are terrible. We contracted for RDC to install carpet in our family room and new tile floor and countertops in the kitchen. The carpet installers left carpet knife blades (actually razor blades) broken in the carpet. They were rude and confrontational. The counter tops were not cut properly so the installer sanded them down -IN THE KITCHEN! Did not cover anything so there was marble dust everywhere. The kitchen floor was left at a different height than the adjoining rooms with no divider, leaving a dangerous trip point at both all 3 doors. My builder used Richmond Decorating to purchase and install my carpet, floors, cabinets and counters in my new house. It was a horrible experience at a stressful time any way. The carpet in my living room was mis-matched and they had to reinstall. They put the wrong pad on the stairs and had to reinstall. The island was damaged and ordered 4 times - they kept delivering damaged product. The glass in the cabinet was ordered three times because they kept getting that wrong. My hardwood floors had scratches before we moved in and the cabinets are damaged underneath the counter top (guess they thought we wouldn't look under there). We closed on our house without the kitchen being complete. I got no sample from my granite to be able to match tile. Their customer service is lacking. The owner did call me to apologize but just doesn't make up for the poor service. I will not buy anything from them again. They made me feel bad for all their mistakes when I had to keep bugging them to do things right. read more
