Given that it is the off-season, teams usually have a significant clearance section due to incoming merchandise for their new season. As luck would have it, I was right; several hats and shirts were 40-50% off. Plus, I had the opportunity to ask some questions with the team's staff. Got to catch one of the last games of the season, and it went by quickly. Squirrels Won! A few balls went into the stands with happy fans taking home a souvenir! The best part was the fire works tonight, which every adults inner child came out to admire the sparkly colors in the sky! Seats were a little small so it made you feel like you were so close to the person next to you... oh because you were... but oh well... the Diamond has been there for forever and in all these years of my life growing up fairly close, I can't believe this was my first time going. Food like pizza, tacos, cheesesteaks, and sausages are available along with your traditional ballpark foods like hotdogs, fries, burgers, and popcorn. Sweets like slushies, funnel cakes, Dip-n-Dots, ice cream sandwiches, and icies are sold to satisfy any sweet tooth. The Flying Squirrels took up roost at The Diamond after the Braves abandoned RVA. They have captured the hearts and minds of the Richmond community. The Diamond is an older stadium and sadly it is showing its age. The concourses are far too crammed and there are not enough concession booths. Amenities aside, this is a great place to watch baseball. The Richmond skyline beyond the outfield fence makes for a beautiful sight. The field seemed to be in pretty good shape. I have to say that the field at The Diamond was in great shape on Saturday night, compared to the field condition last Wednesday at Nationals Park. Their outfield looks awful. Big fan of the beer selection here. My first time having Sweetwater beer since 2019 when I had it in Chicago. Coming across Sweetwater on the 200 level was an unexpected win. Beer prices were not that bad compared to other ballparks. I liked the Squirelly Fries. The game on Saturday night was Grateful Dead night. I'm not a Deadhead, but the theme was still fun and the team wore psychedelic jerseys. It'd be cool if they have Rush night or Slayer night. The game wasn't a sellout but it was at least 75% full. Flying Squirrels stadium General Admission completely not accessible if you can't do the crazy stairs. I shouldn't have to pay more to enjoy the game. But.... Here we are. It's ruined the fun I was hoping for today. Very stressful. It took me 30 minutes to get help. They kept sending me to the elevator which is great but GA seats still require stairs. I'd feel better about the stairs if it wasn't so loud and windy. I know better than to try alone. Urgh. They made an accommodation after my meltdown. Kept making excuses, "This is why we need a new park." Etc. Look. I get it we do need a new park, but the back row of green in upper deck could be gold with some gaff or electric tape. I've been to a lot of minor league and major league ball parks. This one is pretty good overall. The parking is a bit funky though. The largest lot is behind the outfield and if you don't have tickets you walk all the way around to the front to get your tickets and enter. Unless you get there early and snag one of the front spots you are going to walk. Like most minor league parks, it's all about the fan experience and the marketing. They do an exceptional job. The fan base is broad and deep and many are wearing the team logo wear. I went on a Saturday night with rain threatening and there were over 7,000 fans. I've lived in Richmond for years and had somehow never made it to a Flying Squirrels game. Now in less than a week I've been to two! I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I still had a blast. It's great for people watching, the fans are enthusiastic, and the stadium plays upbeat music and has silly games and competitions to keep the crowd entertained. The Diamond also has frequent promotions such as giveaways to the first 1000 fans as well as nightly specials. Mondays are Bark in the Park, which means that you can bring your dog to the game, and Wednesdays are Wine nights with happy hour specials ($5 per glass, $6 per slushie) from one hour before the game until one hour into the game. I was pleasantly surprised by concessions available, which are relatively varied and not nearly as extortionate as some other ballparks. There are ice cream vendors, a seafood stand, specialty hotdogs and bratwurst, as well as your classics like hamburgers and funnel cake. A 16oz craft beer (regardless of ABV or type) is about $7, and a supersized 32oz is $12.50. I recommend getting a regular hot dog, which was tasty and only $2.50. General admission tickets are $8-10 and parking in any of the surrounding lots is $5 (cash only). You can also park across the road in Scotts Addition and walk to the Diamond. Unfortunately the stadium is not very accessible for disabilities. I saw one wheelchair lift from ground level to the field level ($10-12) seating area, but everywhere else seems to be blocked off by narrow staircases with high steps that can be difficult for anyone to navigate, especially for children or while holding drinks or food. Most of the stadium staff is very friendly, but some of the ushers are a bit aggressive. One threatened to throw out anyone who heckled the players or used curse words, which is a bit of an extreme reaction to fans who weren't otherwise causing a disturbance. read more

My recent vacation with my friend Katie, was the Eastern League All-Star Game, held on July 10, 2019. This was a four day festival, beginning on Sunday July 7, 2019 at 7 p.m. on Browns Island. Monday will hosted a concert at Richmond Raceway, Tuesday was The Home Run Derby at The Diamond, with Wednesday being the All-Star game at The Diamond. It was an outstanding experience. The whole All-Star Celebration was fantastic! The organization put on an exceptional celebration, even down to the fireworks show after the All-Star Game. Todd "Parney" Parnell, the VP and COO with Ben Rothrock the general Manager were there to meet and greet the fans throughout the series of events. I look forward to attending games when I am in town. Seeing a Flying Squirrels game is always a good time for the family, for hanging out with a friend (or friends) who want to enjoy a nice day while also drinking beer outside, or just those who love the game. This stadium really makes the effort to keep you happy and coming back. I went to see the opening game this year with a friend and it was great. They had a "motorcycle" on a high wire act, a man jumping through a ring of fire, fireworks, clowns (though that might be a disincentive for some!), and lots of other sideshows as well. They even had Seattle Seahawks player Michael Robinson throw the first pitch, which was pretty cool for any NFL fans who happened to be into baseball on this particular day. Pricing here is good, and discounted tickets make it even better (I live right down the street from the stadium, so I get them for free from my apartment complex, woo!). You'll see pretty quickly based on the announcements and the food/drink prices that they don't care about profiting on the tickets: they're banking on concessions sales and advertising. Nothing wrong with those, just be sure to factor that into your thinking. My advice: eat a meal pre-game, and have dessert there. They have great desserts, and a unique one I enjoyed: a fried PB&J uncrustable. It was amazing! (By the way, download "Bypass Lane" app for your phone to order concessions without waiting in line, they'll text you when your food is ready!) The Squirrels didn't really seem to have their heart in it (final score was 6-1, sadly), though baseball is kind of like fishing a bit: sometimes it's just nice to have an excuse to be outside enjoying a nice day and consuming large amounts of beer without being arrested. And after all, isn't that the true American dream? Overall: 4.0 stars ------------- Pros: -Tickets are VERY affordable (seats start at $7) -Weekly ticket discounts make it easy to get in even cheaper (some nights you can even get a 2-for-1 deal just by bringing a McDonalds receipt, that's a deal!) -LOTS of special events and giveaways. -Some good food offerings, and beer is definitely there! -Seating is good, and there are no obstructions which might ruin a particular section's view. -Very kid-friendly. Cons: -ALWAYS a long line at concessions. Visited the flying squirrels for their home opener of 2018. Pros: Entertainment was amazing, they keep the crowd heavily involved and it encompasses all ages. Very humor filled with games, competitions, and free prizes. The fire works show was the BEST, it lasted about 15 minutes with dancers in light up suits on the middle of the field. Very kid and adult friendly even outside of the entertainment the game brings to itself. Food and beverages are reasonably priced with specials and sales for combos. Cons: Decided to walk to the venue because parking seemed impossible with a small lot. Lines for food and beer were at least a 15-20minute wait because the service was so slow. The usher we encountered was rude when we were looking for our seats. Also they should use some sort of identification on their stadium stairs because the difference in height makes them difficult to navigate with food and people. read more

I haven't been to a ballgame since 2011 or so, and this was a chance to go for relatively cheap seats. The park could use some renovating. I've seen worse, but I've seen better. The cheap seats were just that - essentially benches with backs on them. Vendors are everywhere; you can get pretty much any food you want. In the concourses the food is a bit higher quality, but you pay more for it. Hot dogs from the guy walking around selling them in the stands were $2 each, which ain't bad at all. They keep the time between innings filled with give-aways, races, and various other festivities. It kept the pace from dragging between innings. Be advised - foul balls can reach every single seat in that stadium. Bring a glove. read more

Good stadium. Smaller obviously but that's makes it more intimate. Seats behind home plate usually go for $16 and behind the first base line around $10. It's really great because you can really see right on the field and hear everything from the bat cracking a ball or the sound of the ball hitting the mitt. Just a much more immersive experience overall that I would recommend to anyone that loves baseball. Great, especially for a family outing. Also the stadium does a lot of giveaways like at major league parks, (shirts, fanny packs, hats, college days) so be on the look out. It is not just a baseball game anymore, Squirrels Management entertains you from opening pitch to park closing. Who would have thought that chanting Chips and Queso would be so much fun?! For the best deal, go on Monday. It is McDonald's Monday. This means bring a McDonald's receipt and get two tickets for the price of one. Even if you don't eat McDonald's you can get a $1 Sweet Tea and save $10 on a lower level seat. Only downfall is that you may be harassed by the scary McDonald clown. My advice, grab a big beer, some cracker jacks, and have some fun. read more

Going to a Squirrels game is definitely a fun date night, or an entertaining and affordable family night. It has all the charms of traditional baseball, plus some little oddities that make it uniquely Richmond. Since Ginger's review covered so much good info, I'll stick to the oddities: 1. Yes, our mascot is a flying squirrel. And Nutzy does fly... kind of. When I was there, Nutzy was flying off railings, kissing girls hands and posing to show off his stellar body to anyone who would check him out. The railing trick was particularly impressive- with the weight of that huge squirrel head, the person in that suit must have really good balance. 2. Vendors serve food and drinks in the stands- in costume. My favorite was the older gentleman dressed up as a king, and the beer man who asked customers if their beer was cold, and then said loudly "ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER..." He did a lot of business in my section, that's for sure. 3. The vendors that work the stands sell cookies and milk towards the end of the game. How perfect is that? 4. There are games on the field after EVERY INNING. Whether it's a tee shirt giveaway or a hoagie toss challenge, there are tons of games to keep kids engaged... 5. It's $10 per ticket to get the good seats. I sat in the second row, on the first base line near home plate. It was intense. I could definitely have chatted with the players, if I was so inclined. 6. The soft pretzels are actually large soft pretzel sticks... so you can carry your pretzel AND YOUR BEER without dropping anything! 7. Parking is $3! (ok, that's not an oddity really, but it's a damn good deal). And here's a final tip- bring your own peanuts, if you can manage to smuggle them in. It's $2.50 a bag, and the bag holds like 4 oz of peanuts! You can go through that in one inning! read more

I went to Saturday night's thriller against the Altoona Curve. The last time I had been to the Diamond was for a Braves game probably 10 years ago. There have been quite a few changes since and really good chances at that. The marketing folks have certainly gone all out with the various spins and puns associated with Squirrels. In some realms it might be overkill but I think in this arena it just lends itself to more fun. We tried to buy box seats but they were sold out for this game (though they remained mostly empty for the majority of the night.) but we went with the reserved in the upper deck. Great seats right along the first base line. The between inning entertainment was fun. It was odd that occasionally the "host" would announce the loser to be the winner. I suppose she was trying to spread the prizes between the 1st base and 3rd base crowds. 1st base dominated most of the night for the record. The game itself was good and entertaining which I can't always say for baseball. I didn't get any concessions but I did pick up some Flying Squirrels gear. Like most sports merchandise it seemed $2-$3 overpriced but I guess it doesn't bother folks that much because there was quite a long line to pay. All in all, a good time. I would recommend these games to folks in the future. read more

I've always loved baseball. My dad used to take me to the Senators' games in D.C. at the old RFK Stadium. I was the statistician for my high school team and my college team, and during my Florida years, I worked for the Rays. So I'm glad we've got a minor league team again, even though those poor guys probably get razzed about their name. I mean, come on, the Flying Squirrels? My Uncle Lou used to call squirrels "rats with tails" and I have a neighbor we all call "squirrel man" because he feeds the rodents peanuts every morning. This is a AA team (San Francisco Giants) and the mascot is a caped, flying squirrel named Nutzy. They're still playing at the Diamond on Boulevard, although various movers and shakers are lobbying for a new stadium in Shockoe Bottom or basically anywhere but where it is now. The new folks have made a lot of improvements though: comfy chairs with cupholders instead of bleacher seating for one. And they're doing tons of promotions and giveaways to make every game an event. I love it that our games are affordable. These days, you need to cough up $100 to go to a major league game and that's just for tickets and a $10 beer. Forget getting peanuts or a dog. Here twenty bucks buys plenty of summer fun at the Diamond. So I guess we need a new bumper sticker. If Virginia is for Lovers, then is Richmond for Nutzy Squirrels? read more

I love going to Squirrels games. I've loved going to the Diamond since I was a youngster (and honestly, liked the Braves namesake WAY MORE), but it is still just as fun as an adult. The stadium itself is very well maintained. The staff are all super friendly and helpful, and there really isn't a bad place to sit. I will say, if you have kids and want to be where all the promo action is, Section 104-105 is the most kid-friendly seating in the entire ballpark. Players will often toss spare balls, Nutzy makes several appearances here and it's along the first base, home team side. My only gripe with this place is that starting this season (2019) they have switched from paper cups to plastic bottles. It feels like you are getting less, and at $4/bottle, it's a honestly a ripoff. My suggestion? Eat at one of the many nearby restaurants (Buzz and Ned's, Fat Dragon, Boulevard Burger, etc) and then catch a game. All in all, a great way to spend the evening in the summer time, and home to the best Fourth of July fireworks in the city. Have fun, go nuts! read more

Great place for some family fun. They have a variety of themes throughout the season and they do have fireworks on the weekend. There's plenty of staff located around the stadium. The ones we came in contact with were friendly and helpful. They do several giveaways between innings which I think is great. It allows the players to get in position while someone else is entertaining the crowd. There were times where the mascots (Nutzy, Natasha) were in the stands interacting with the kids. The food is decent, your typical baseball game food (hotdogs, hamburgers, etc.), snacks, and of course beer. The squirrelly fries where a big hit for my son. (It's just curly fries). We did get peanuts from the guys that walk throughout the stadium. I thought they were okay. Overall, the experience was good. Everyone had a good time eating, laughing, and cheering for the Squirrels. It's a bonus when your kids understand the game. Unfortunately they didn't win but it was a lot of fun. The stadium was very crowded because of Shaka Smart bobblehead giveaway. Also, Shaka Smart threw the first pitch.The weather was perfect for the game. I sat at the bottom of the stadium (watch out for the baseballs). The view of the action was great. Most seats in the stadium give fans a decent view. Ticket prices are reasonable. The food in the stadium is reasonably priced for a ball park. There's plenty of entertainment between innings for fans. Fireworks are shot off at the stadium on selected nights.
