Located in the working class…read moresection of Staten Island's North Shore known as Stapleton - 638 Bay Street, very near the Stapleton Station train stop and not far from the Ferry - the price range is "From two dollars and up," according to the manager. They have great hours too - well suited for working people. Closed on Tuesdays, they are open 11 am to 8 pm on weekdays and from 11 to 6 on weekends. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and the items for sale are just terrific. If you want a true antique that is unique and in great shape you may pay a couple of hundred dollars but not thousands. This is not a thrift store and yet it is affordable. What caught my eye were the two very large animals in the window display. Prior to the store opening I shot a photo of the window display, focusing on one of the creatures - this image was a very popular item on flickr. My photo wound up in the "In Explore" group which is a highly sought after honour. I generally get from 200-300 hits on an image and 8-10 favourites - the window display from Love Your Furniture got over 5400 hits and 67 faves. What was the item? A large, pink, jewel encrusted, bird or mammal of some sort. When the store opened I ventured in to see what the creature was - it, and the jewel encrusted golden giraffe that graces the other side of the window display, was apparently part of a carousel at one time. This truly unique item and many more diminutive but equally interesting items await the visitor at this gem of a store. In addition to antiques the store features handmade items by Yana, one of the owners - one such item is a gorgeous decoupage end table. I love that the shop owner carries her own items, but also other local artists. Sometimes the shop can even host events. The prices are VERY reasonable & the shop takes cards. The owner is very friendly and helpful, dont be afraid to ask any questions or for feedback on the items.

Cooper & Bay also offers classes and workshops for activities such as taxidermy, jewelry making, and magic! Each student leaves with their own unique creations and experience. They also support other local artists by hosting pop-up shop style takeovers where an outside artist will display their own work and take over the shop for the day. There's a new vendor almost every weekend! Truly a "must see" destination in Bayonne for anyone into the bizarre and unusual, looking for that perfect, conversation-starting piece for their collection, or just those looking to experience something a bit different.

Wasn't sure if the man who worked there just had a terrible personality, and is usually rude, unwelcoming , unfriendly or was it because of my what I looked like. There was an item on the wall that caught my interest, remove it off the wall as it was for sale, but I wanted to inspect it further. As I removed the item, the piece that held it on the wall fell, not the item it self but a piece of wire. He comes over and with a very rude tone tells me, not to take anything down if I don't have too, " it's the reason I took it down to begin with" as I couldn't tell what it was. I told him there was no sign indicating not to remove anything off the wall, and he responds by telling me there's signs in other places and he can't put them everywhere. Very distasteful and regret spending my money there. I usually like to match people's energy but at the time felt like he wasn't worth my energy. A better approach: Hi ma'am, can I help you with that, we unfortunately recommend not taking things off the wall, instead ask for assistance and I'll be glad to help. ​ Work on your attitude sir, and if it was because of what I looked like. Then that even more terrible. I will also be telling my family members not to ever shop there again!

I would recommend this place only for window shopping the immense collection of "ahem" antiques…read morethey have. But much of the antiques are frankly just extremely overpriced junk. There were a lot of items which were stained and broken but they still have the audacity to charge actual money for it. One of the men who works there made me never want to buy anything in that place ever again. I found an old trinket which was quite overpriced for what it was and I asked for a couple of dollars less. The amount of rudeness I got back I didn't expect! It's not like people are buying this junk left and right. It just sits there for years and years! My offer was not at all unreasonable. But one of the men who works there makes the antique shopping experience so unpleasant that I'm done shopping there. It's just entertaining to walk around and I come in mainly for the nice cafe in the back... If you want great antiques at fair prices, this is definitely not the place to buy!

Then they also asked to leave my diaper bag. Eh, uh, okay. Immediately put off. What if my baby needs a bottle? I gotta go all the way back to the front? Little did I know that there was only one floor available, so my annoyance was relatively unjustified. But still, coulda been nicer. In the store itself, it is very well curated, organized far better than the Salvation Army I struggled to search through. The men's section was bustling with good deals for vests, suit pants, and basic button downs. They also had a variety of athletic jerseys, swim trunks, and ties (which I found relatively overpriced). Side story: midway, I struck a conversation with the same aloof cashier previously mentioned, and she turned out to be very kind and funny. So, there's that. There was also a very nice young lady stocking in the aisles. The outcome was small, but great: a button down for less than three dollars, and these perfectly fitting shorts for less than seven. From, yeah, Banana Republic. The icing on the cake that really sells this place is their flyer in the front that showcases other thrift stores on the island you might not have known about. Stop here first and foremost, try not to spend all your money, and peruse the other shops!

So without much thought at all I declared that we needed to go inside and started across the street. What could Dad say? He gave me a look that clearly said "you're weird" and followed me in. Once inside we were greeted by dozens of items that I swear are in my Grandfathers basement right now. Dad must have been reading my mind b/c he actually said "I think you're grandfather has a couple of those in the basement" while pointing to a set of vinyl suitcases. The entire store is filled, floor to ceiling, with vintage pieces of all sizes and shapes. Big ticket items like tables, chairs and trunks to smaller accessories of baskets & picture frames. The layout and arrangement made it hard to navigate the store and what was more confusing was the location (I think) of the cash register & counter area... It's hidden behind a huge pile of stuff so you can't even see the front door if you're sitting behind the counter. Oh and we were in the shop for a good ten minutes and I don't think I saw the owner/manager once. I though that was weird.. and I can't forget to mention- I found the store to have a bit of a musty smell... which makes sense if you think about the items inside. These folks have been repairing my antique radios for decades, and they do great work. I have 2…read moreradios in the house pre-1960, and baseball sounds better on them than anything in the world. These guys take time, give you and estimate, meet the target dates they provide, and are reasonably priced for repairing antiques to their original condition, including cleaning the exterior. If you are budget-conscious, dont look to buy anything here. The owner is not rude. He's busy. Ive spoken to him once, briefly during my initial visit. Any other time Ive visited, he's been pre-occupied, which was fine with me. Ive never had a personal convo with him, but hes done business with me over the years via proxy.

I couldn't be happier or more satisfied with both companies. Ilona at Demolition was so helpful and patient with me. She went out of her way to help navigate what would or wouldn't work for my project. She she spent loads of time to find the perfect solution to my unique security problem. She was candid and had loads of amazing tips for the care and feeding of old wrought iron. This project would have stalled without her. The pictures show the iron door in the second stage. Final painting will happen when the weather warms up. Thanks Ilona it's been a great experience. You have so many beautiful things, I want more!
