My mother-in-law needed a place she could afford with just her disability and social security income. We assumed she would be lucky to get anything and did not have high hopes. We have not seen my mother-in-law this happy in a long time. Previously, she basically sat in her studio apartment smoking cigarettes, drinking diet coke and waiting to die. Now she eats actual, well planned meals, sitting with the same group of cronies each meal. She can't smoke in her room, so she's getting a little exercise each day walking out to the smoking area. She goes to watch movies with friends in the common area. Despite having recently begun hospice care, she looks healthier that she has in years. I will now take my son to see her since there are places we can visit with her that aren't clouded in decades of old smoke and nicotine. One would think that a place that would accept her (based on her income and credit rating) would have been the dredges of nursing homes, but this place is clean, well organized and pleasant to visit. On par with a Holiday Inn. The staff is exceedingly helpful and friendly. They helped her hang her posters and will come get her with a wheelchair at 3 am if she "needs" a smoke and is not up to the task of walking at that time of night. They provide activities for all abilities and welcome visitors to join. She says the food is pretty good too, high praise coming from a woman who has had no interest in eating for several years. A few nights ago, she mentioned after dinner to a friend that her grilled cheese sandwich was cold. The chef approached her and asked if she wanted fries with her new sandwich. Later that evening, a hot sandwich and crispy fries were delivered to her room. We will always be grateful to this place for giving her a happy, comfortable place to live out the rest of her life.

During COVID, she became very ill and was placed on hospice. After caring for her at home for 9 months, we were advised to find a long-term care facility. I briefly placed her at another facility in San Rafael, but knew within hours it wasn't the right fit. Finding South Marin was a turning point. My mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer, kidney failure, and dementia. The care, compassion, and respect she's received here have been exceptional. A special thank you to Kelly, the social worker, who is knowledgeable, supportive, and truly cares. Carina, the activities director, is also wonderful and brings so much kindness to the residents. All the nurses, assistants, and staff have been wonderful. I never imagined putting my mom in a SNF, but I feel very lucky she's at South Marin. As a former long-term care volunteer ombudsman, I also want to add some perspective. I've seen reviews mentioning delays in care. The reality is that staffing shortages are a widespread issue across the industry due to policy and funding challenges. That said, the staff here consistently do their best under difficult circumstances. Based on both my personal experience and professional background, I can confidently say South Marin Health and Wellness is a top-notch facility. Thanks team, I appreciate all of you!

Their PT (what she tends to need most) is terrific - the PT therapists seem to experience little turnover as the same individuals have provided PT for my mom over several stays. Despite being very busy, the social workers are also very helpful. And Dr. Susan Nguyen (the hospitalist there) is wonderful - caring, smart, and on it. Rehab isn't fun, the facilities are all really busy and frustrations are inevitable. But we will keep requesting South Marin when my Mom needs it b/c it's the best around.

Embarrassment If I…read morecould give this place negative stars, I would. The energy in this building screams "we don't care." From the front desk to the so-called therapists, it's a masterclass in how to waste people's time while pretending to be professional. Let's start with the staff -- attitude like they're doing you a favor just by showing up. Late appointments, zero communication, and when they finally decide to "help," they rush through everything like they're speed-running your recovery. It's giving lazy, underqualified, and unbothered. The therapist I dealt with had the audacity to act like my pain was an inconvenience to them. Sir/Ma'am, I'm here because your job is literally to fix that. If you're going to act bored and detached, please go find another profession -- maybe one that doesn't involve human beings. The entire vibe? Unorganized chaos wrapped in mediocrity. No follow-up, no accountability, no sense of urgency. The place needs an audit, a leadership shake-up, and maybe an exorcism. I walked in expecting therapy, not trauma. Save yourself the headache and find a clinic that actually values your time, your health, and your dignity.
