Tried to order a gift subscription for my brother. He never received it despite trying several methods they advised. Now my subscription has changed to my brothers name. Called to get a refund of the $26.00. Was told they don't provide refunds. After I got very pushy for ten minutes, they said I might get a refund in a month or so. So I am canceling my subscription. Not only did they lose a potential new customer, they lost a current customer. Worst customer service ever. It would be more accurate to say there is no customer service. read more

I accepted a 26 week promotional offer in September 2025 for a digital subscription. I was advised by email that the subscription rate would be renewed at the end of the 26 weeks (March 2026) for the same promotional rate unless I was contacted in writing of a rate increase in which case I would have the option to cancel. During the last week of February 2026, I was alerted by my credit card company of a charge by Richmond Times Dispatch. I called the RTD customer service number which went to a call center. The person I spoke with, whom I had difficulty understanding due to her heavy foreign accent, told me my subscription had increased; and I was being charged for my next month. The new amount for one month was more than the amount for the entire past 26 weeks. I told her I didn't want to renew my subscription at that rate. I was then barraged with a series of questions about my reading habits, how much I was willing to pay, why I was dissatisfied, etc. I told her I didn't have time to waste and I just wanted my subscription canceled. As is the custom with such call centers, I was told she didn't have the authority to honor my request and I would have to speak with her superior. I was put on hold for several minutes and then connected to another person who was even harder to understand than the first. I explained I didn't have a lot of time to waste and I simply didn't want to have my subscription renewed at the inflated price. After several minutes, I finally got the person to agree to end my subscription; but she said she could not refund the amount already charged to my credit card. I told her if they were not willing to refund the unauthorized charge to my credit card, I would be contacted my credit card company to file a disputed charge, which I did. My credit card company has since advised me that my dispute was upheld and the charge has been removed. It is so sad that The Richmond Times Dispatch, a once proud and respected publication, has sunk to such a level as to have to hire off-shore call centers that use deceitful and high pressure tactics to sell subscriptions and take advantage of customers. After being a customer for 50+ years, I will never have anything to do with Richmond Times Dispatch again; and I caution others against falling for their "promotional deals". I signed up for $1/wk online and enjoyed it for a couple of weeks, then every time I clicked into it it prompted me to sign up for the subscription and would not let me read the articles. I assumed they cancelled it. Just received a $15 charge, called and they would not remove the charge, I canceled and am so disappointed in the online version not working AND being charged for something that did not work, with a service rep not listening to a word I said trying to talk me into staying even though it didn't work, she would not stop the pended charge. I have cancelled my subscription today because, I am moving - and somewhere in the fine print there is an early termination fee of $25 cancelation fee. Unbelievable - I have been their customer for 10 + now that is how they treat you. First, they keep increasing the digital subscription price. I call and they reduce it for a couple months and then increase it right back. Second, I'm now getting 2 marketing emails from them everyday trying to get me to purchase a gift subscription for people. The price advertised is less for an entire year than I'm paying for 2 months. So not only are they spamming their current customers with these offers, but they're upsetting this customer that is paying much more for the paper than new customers would pay. Third, they keep reducing what's in the paper. Several months ago they completely changed the comic section. They no longer include the parade in the sunday paper and Dear Abby has been replaced by some other column. Absolutely awful process to cancel your subscription, and they should be ashamed of their process. First, the inability of a customer to cancel online is just ridiculous. Then, when I finally get ahold of someone when their office opens at 7:30, it's obvious I was talking to someone in an offshore call center, as I could barely understand her. Despite me telling her I wanted to cancel my digital subscription, after feeling comfortable she understood what I was asking, she asks me, "So, sir, can I provide you with the information to reset your password so you can continue to enjoy your digital subscription?" Needless to say, after attempting to cancel online for 20 minutes, and ultimately getting a "server not found" message, I was done, and told her to cancel my account immediately, after I asked her if she misunderstood me initially, and verified she hadn't mistakenly heard me say I was having problems accessing my digital account.. My husband and me are so disappointed/mad about the RTD format. It is so bad. To jam the sports, comics and local information into a two page format is totally unacceptable. I miss the old format of two pages of comics, stories, recipes and food. The new comics only have a few that are still there that I like. My husband reads the news while i read the section that has the comics. Then he reads the world news and local news while I do the puzzle. It worked just fine. I have tried calling many times in the past few months to cancel and could never get through. I was just on hold for an hour and the customer service representative hung up on me when I asked her for documentation showing that my rate could change at any time. This is not about the print edition....It is fine. It it their digital platform and account management that is awful. The digital part has obnoxious popups and advertisements I have to X out of. IT is VERY SLOW....like I am using a modem! The account management does not allow you to see what you have paid, what your billing is or anything about cost. They seem to try to hide the cost like it is a secret. You can find the cost as a new subscriber, but after your new subscriber period, there is nothing about what it will cost, and as a long time subscriber we are paying about 80.00 a month for daily delivery (about $2.50 a day). I only know that because we got a charge on our credit card. Looks like we may finally drop our subscription... I want to support a daily newspaper, but just too many problems with TD! read more

My parents subscribed to the RTD for 50 years, regular as clock work. I recently decided to take the weekends. All I wanted was saturday and sunday. I have lived in many cities and done this. Not the RTD. You can get Sunday only or you can get Thursday thru Sunday, what??? I subscribed to the Thursday thru Sunday print editions. I have never received it correctly. Sometimes I get Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Maybe a few days later but I sometimes get them, sometimes not....who knows??? If the paper arrives it is not in the morning, it is in the afternoon and in my mail box. Can we say, "federal crime?" NEVER a Sunday edition though and that is what I really wanted. I have tried calling the RTD and I get put on hold for over 40 minutes to get through to a live person. They assure me everything will be taken care of. Nothing is ever fixed. To top all of this off, the RTD has become nothing but a mouthpiece for the democratic party. It is beyond pathetic how much of a political rag this publication is now. I've had enough. read more

I have finally quit getting the RTD newspaper. Not because of all of the ridiculous spelling and grammar mistakes, not because of the other mistakes because no one is paying attention to what they are doing. I finally had it with their billing problems! They charge customers to pay 6 months in advance and then 4 months later they bill me for 6 more months. When I call I have the hardest time explaining that I paid in July 8th, 6 months takes us to January. 20 more calls trying to get the charge reversed from November. I'm not on automatic payment and they can't explain how they had my card number and decided on their own to tip the carrier $40! The carrier was the BEST part, always delivered really early!! While printed matter is struggling to stay in existence it's a disgrace to lose to longtime customer because of years of simple billing issues. read more

I just moved to Richmond and have been contacted by 2 telemarketers to subscribe to the daily paper. The first one offered a two week free trial subscription so I agreed. I subscribed to the online version before I moved and was excited to get the daily printed version. I read the daily paper everyday and have for years. I still consider it to be the best place for local news and events. I have had to phone everyday this week to get my paper. I just spoke to Della and was told that if I wanted to drop the paper it was up to me. I asked her if wasn't it to her advantage that I get the paper and she did admit that it was. Is this the kind of customer service I should expect from the RTD? I am so disappointed because I was really looking forward to the paper. I'm not sure it is worth the hassle. After subscribing to the e-edition using a renewable special offer I tried to cancel. It was unbelievable. No cancellation option provided on the website so I phoned in and was put on hold for 20 minutes or so and finally got to speak to someone but was cut off in mid conversation after I announced I wanted to cancel my subscription. Called back and left a phone number to be called but it was never returned. Wrote a letter trying to cancel my subscription to no avail. First of all I would have rated The Times Dispatch a ZERO but that option is not available. This paper is such a shell of what it used to be. Local content is limited and there is nothing added beyond that which is available at the 3 local TV websites. All of the national news is NYT, WP or AP. Editorial & opinion content is predictable. The print version goes to bed before 9 o'clock so anything happening at 8:30 onwards doesn't make it. Customer service is off continent & poorly trained, Always closing with "Thank you for supporting local journalism." My subscription has increased 121% in the last 3 years. So I have decided to "stop being abused by local journalism" and find my news elsewhere. read more

I have been a subscriber for over 4 decades and became concerned that the RTD offers a Print + Digital, 7-day Delivery subscription for $35.07 for 12 months. That's $420.84 a year. I paid $876.20 over the past 12 months for the same subscription. Called to inquire why the huge difference and was told I was not eligible for this new customer, discounted rate but they offered to reduce my 13 Week rate of $201 by $11.70. Obviously I was disappointed but was also a little insulted that my long-term loyalty was the only thing being discounted in favor of the possibility of a new subscriber. My perception, from this experience, is the RTD is using my high subscription payments (and yours) to subsidize discounts offers to attract a new customer subscription base. Probably a need to help replace those long-term customers they can no longer retain. Ironically, part of their subscription issues might be due to their decision to initiate recent revisions to their publication. From reading other reviews, I perceive the newspaper's quality vs value relationship has slipped considerably. The RTD delivers news that was news almost a half day ago. They must be aware we have multiple opportunities to daily news; even while it is happening. I am very aware of this and have started evaluating other opportunities. read more

I called the RTD to change my address. I actually got to talk to a live person who assured me that I would get a paper the following Sunday. I did not gat a paper the following Sunday, so I called and, after using the automated service, received a credit for the missed paper. After waiting on hold for an interminable time listening to them assure me that they knew my time was valuable, I got to speak with a live person again. She however told me that I was on a route where redelivery was not possible. When I didn't get my paper today, I called again. Today, they told me that I wasn't assigned to a route! They again offered to credit me for the missed paper and indicated there weren't any routes near me so they couldn't get me a paper today. (Considering I'm sitting in my living room looking out at Courthouse Road in North Chesterfield, I'm having trouble believing that.) When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the representative got rude and told me there wasn't anyone above her that I could talk to. She then told me that even if I did talk to a supervisor, nothing would change. At least the supervisor was polite. I enjoy reading the paper and getting the ads on Sunday. But, it's not worth it to me if I have to go to the store to get that paper. I also like getting the Thanksgiving Day paper delivered. But, again. it's not worth it to me to deal with this just for paper once a year. The money I will save when I cancel my subscription will more than make up for my having to go to the store on Thanksgiving Day to get a paper. And, that will take less of my valuable time than I've spent on hold with them the last two weeks! read more
