Having been a paperboy for the News Leader 50 years ago and having been a subscriber for the last 38 years as well as paying for real estate ads for years, I've always been loyal to the Times Dispatch, but alas, it's time to give up the ghost and cancel our subscription. The RTD is nearly gone. Our subscription rate has gone through the roof while the paper has dwindled to a few pages. I am now paying $624.50 for 12 months of 7-day delivery while friends pay $380 and my mother-in-law pays $296 for the same 7-day delivery. Something isn't right with that discrepancy. read more

Often called the "Richmond Times-Disgrace" by the locals, I have never been a huge fan. It is pretty clear that the views of this paper lean for more to the right and they make no bones about it. The paper, as with most around the country, has gone even farther South as the Internet has taken over as many people's prime source of news. They have farmed out the local employment listings to Yahoo Hot Jobs which annoys me for some reason. I do like the Monday Metro Business section as a great way to keep up on developments locally. The website is pretty bad as well. read more

The death of the daily newspaper globally is exemplified really well by the RTD - their failure to recognize that the world was moving to the web for information was the harbinger of their doom. They lost me as a paid subscriber with their page 1 headline in '02 that blared, "Blacks Take Top Acting Prizes" - seeming to suggest that Denzel & Halle stole them. I love newspapers. Unfortunately, when even the NY Times admits that they're in financial trouble and struggling to maintain reader-share, you've gotta bring your A+ game. My family has subscribed to this paper for 7 day delivery for over 50 years. Lately, we never know if we will receive a paper or not. My father is 103 years old and does not want to read a digital edition. When we did not get the Sunday paper, we missed out on valuable coupons. When I finally reached a live person to complain about the erratic home deliveries, I was told they are having "production issues". It would save time if a there was a notice about production issues on the website to inform subscribers and lesson complaint calls. read more

I grew up with the "Washington Post" so I'm picky about my newspapers, and when I lived in Florida, it was the "St. Petersburg TImes", another top-rated US daily. This paper seems to be a conservative mouthpiece disguised as a journalism outlet. I do think Dana Craig is a good restaurant reviewer. I used to be the restaurant reviewer for Richmond.com and we agreed more often than not on most places. But ever since the paper bought out Richmond.com, there isn't any competition except "Style Weekly", so it's not surprising that the reviews aren't as broad in covering all genres and price ranges anymore. I also had a lot of delivery problems...namely, the paper rarely arrived or was delivered to my neighbor and I would have to sneak up on their porch and retrieve it every morning. read more

The online obituary section of the Richmond Times Dispatch is a clunky nightmare and a complete rip off. A ten line obituary with photo is over $180...seriously?. Then I find an additional $7 dollar charge on my credit card after I'd already been charged. They never notified me about the additional charge and then gave me some lame excuse when we contacted them. DO NOT EVER use the classifieds or obituaries for this news paper. read more

I enjoy reading the Richmond Times Dispatch with breakfast to catch any stories I missed the day before on Google News, and on my mobile to get local stories regardless of where I am. Unlike other reviewers I have been reasonably satisfied with reading the print version of the Times Dispatch, which I get daily. I admit their regular website is rather a disaster, but their mobile website for smartphones is actually very nice. The editorials sections is conservative heavy, but I am generally satisfied with their respectably neutral reporting in news pieces. The Times Dispatch, along with most print media, is entirely incapable of reporting on technology, but I don't really consider this an issue since it's not what I'm looking for in a newspaper (I go to Slashdot, et al for tech news). The Bottom Line: I am generally satisfied with the Richmond Times Dispatch for my morning reading, and consider it a competent source of news when reading from my mobile, but would not recommend it for general online reading. read more

Normally I read the online version of the paper and that's why my review is so low. Just when I had gotten used to the new website they launched a couple years back they decided to change it yet again. The new format is boring, impossible to see anything worth reading about, and contains so much ad space I can't tell what's news and what's an advertisement. I'm extremely disappointed and honestly have stopped going to the website. I also had the paper delivered to my house for a while but when the driver kept throwing the paper from his car into my 99 year old single pane glass windows and customer service simply said "we'll talk to him" I had enough of that too. BUYER BEWARE!!! Submitted information and payment (verified completed payment processed) for recently promoted RTD Digital Subscription Special. With inability to access, I contacted RTD DIG SUB Troubleshooting. This served to compound my concern and provided no resolution. Per Rep Charles, a RTD DIG subscription was not established, he further states (from which he has no authority or credible evidence) my financial institution did not charge me LIAR!!! RTD Billing needs to develop a safeguard to ensure no subscription no subscription fee billed to customers. Now I am inconvenienced to initiate a disputed charge. Thanks for NOTHING RTD!!! read more

I have received the TD for years. I winter in Florida and for years have put my subscription on vacation hold. When I attempted to do the same this year I was told that I would have to pay for three weeks after the initiation date?? I then said I would quit the paper and requested a bill for the termination of the last three months through the first day of what would have been a vacation hold, the rep was unable to calculate the amount. I asked for a supervisor, talked to Terry (?), he was unable to give me an amount and told me to call back on the last day to cancel my subscription. I have been calling for three hours, have left a number at which to be called back. No call. No customer service. No wonder they are in financial trouble. read more

In a national and state emergency, complains about my ad blocker and blocks their site with subscription popup. I'm on a metered connection, your ads suck up my data, and I have no need for a subscription when I just want to look at your website for 1 minute a couple times a week. Unbelievable.....I have been on hold for over 40 minutes trying to cancel my subscription - and no you cannot cancel online. Their prices have gone completely off the chart for what they deliver. The paper has gone so politically that it is offensive to read most of their articles. And to add insult to injury, after you tell them you want to cancel immediately, they tell you to write a letter to the editor first! Again, I asked to cancel immediately and am informed that they charge a $5.00 cancelation fee. Unbelievable! I agree with the others that have submitted reviews. BEWARE! Their customer service is non-existent. They are so far overpriced for what you get that it should be illegal. Their content is too biased. We had the Richmond Times Dispatch Dr!I've red for many years but let subscription lapse because we were not reading it - made for expensive packing material. Restarted delivery in June 2000 for 13 week trial to see if we would read it since we were basically home bound due to Covid 19, but alas, we still did not find it interesting to read and discontinued at the end of the13 weeks. As a relatively new to the area reader (and lover of print media), I so very much wanted to support the local paper. Regretfully, after 3 years of reading, I will be cancelling our subscription as the bias is simply too much to stomach. Despite repeated claims of middle of the road reporting, simple math counts reveal the clear far right bias. It is their right I cannot disagree with that. It is not their right to claim neutral ground when the bias in writing style and commentary is so blatantly right wing. After being a 17 year customer I cancelled my subscription today. A few years ago the Times-Dispatch decided to change their vacation policy whereby customers who request a vacation stop no longer got a credit. I have lived with it for a couple of years and have still gotten credits by calling the paper stating I either get the credit or I cancel. Each time I have gotten a credit. Each time I explain I don't use the digital version and am not going to pay for something I am not going to use when on vacation. Today I called and asked for a credit, not just a hold. The person I spoke with was a complete idiot. Not only was he very rude to me but said my stance was harsh. So as of today I am no longer paying roughly $26 a month. I can spend that money elsewhere and not have to read the left leaning propaganda the paper prints. read more

I get the paper delivered 7 days a week, but the continuing price increases are starting to have a negative effect on continuation of the subscription. They have finally come to realize that they are simply a local newspaper, not the "State Newspaper" they claimed to be. Overall, it's an ok paper. The online site is no more then a pop up infested joke. I avoid it at all cost. Even have required surveys to be able to read certain articles. Had hoped it would be something to go to when out of town, but too much extra fluff, and not enough news. Some sections like sports are so far behind the curve that it's comical. Still have high school foot ball and basketball rankings up in June, but little or no spring sports info. Also have articles online that suddenly appear in the printed version 3 to 7 days later. Why by the print version to read articles that are days old. Just a joke of a web site. read more

I have subscribed to the RTD for over 35 years for every day of the week. Just last November it rose in price almost $20 for every 13 weeks. And not even a year yet, the price has gone through the roof! Another $20, so it has almost doubled in price within about 6 months. What is going on? Finally cut the cord with RTD. Times must be really bad and/or there are circulation pockets RTD does not want anymore so they price them out. Since 7/2017, the eight week rate has changed from $35.95 to $42.40 to $57.60, a cool 60%. Moreover, not one of these increases was communicated in advance, a bill arrives with a new higher payment amount. Called customer service to inquire about increases and they confirmed the new amounts but could not explain how or why they occurred but had obviously received many similar inquiries on the subject. read more

I use to always get the Times-Dispatch but now it's a die'n paper now. Now I only get the Sunday paper so the wife get the coupons other wise I wouldn't get it at all. When you go to read it, it is pretty much old news there's not much in there any more. And their web site ain't much better. With no reader survey or poll, the Time's Dispatch authoritarian bureaucracy redefined "Front Page National and International News" as "Local Richmond News". After over 10 yrs of being a loyal subscriber, their management was defensive and challenged my priorities after complaining about their becoming "provincial". I immediately stopped the paper. No letters to the editor complaining about the focus on local have been published. I stopped my subscription immediately and many other regular subscribers that I have spoken to have similar complaints. It's a great local paper for the Richmond area, outside subscribers would do better getting their own local paper. read more

I like to read this local newspaper, and after years of delivery, I switched to the Sunday paper with online weekday/Saturday so I could read it anywhere. Recently, my credit card company notified me that the charge had gone up $6.50 to $29.53/month (they wanted to make sure this was right). I checked my records and discovered that since I began the online subscription in Oct. 2017, the rate has gone up from $14.63/month to $29.53/month - more than doubled! No paper, no ink, no delivery except for the Sunday paper. Need to think about this... read more

I am not at all happy with this recent rate increase. How can they justify it going from $79.30 to $92.30 in one swoop? Home delivery customers cannot keep this paper going. If they can't get advertisers, they may have to close up shop. I don't like the new look. If they are having trouble with pricing, why make the paper larger? Plus, they have to many liberal writers these days that only make me angry with what they say. I love having the paper in my hands but I may have to make the decision to stop it and get my news from TV and Internet. This serves as a warning to anyone thinking of subscribing as I post about my newest RTD ripoff! Since last year I have gotten a rate of $12.87 for 13 weeks Sunday only delivery. It is a 'special rate' but when I call customer service I get the rate. Last bill sent in January actually showed that 13 week rate of $12.87 so to eliminate extra time paying bills, I doubled it to 26 weeks,paid $25.74 and noted my calendar the last issue on July 10th. Yesterday I receive a bill that subscription ended March 20 ( today is April 9th! why did that take so long? ) and the rate is now 4 weeks -$10.18. Several calls ,bounces to supervisors and I finally get Erica who could have cared less. After explaining my issue for 3rd time, now to Erica, and put on hold again, Erica offered the $12.87 rate for 13 weeks but starting today! But I had already paid the $12.87 rate, doubled it for 26 weeks to take me through July 10th. Why not honor that payment made back in January ( they could have called or emailed me back in January if that was not going to be honored). They were trying to squeeze a few extra dollars out of me obviously which out of principle is wrong! So I was so fed up and furious -- cancelled ( Erica seemed too eager to do so) and of course now feel I was ripped off. The other issue I had last year to warn you about when you subscribe that they don't tell you is you will get special promotional type publications (called magazines) inserted into your paper or special holiday publications that are extra that results in your subscription to running out earlier. It took me several tenacious calls to get my account noted NO EXTRAS and the credits due to me. I did call the District Supervisor, Mr. Baker, after my call / cancellation to let him know why I cancelled and how I feel I was ripped off. Let's see if he can or will do anything. I do enjoy the newspaper and specifically the story on the local Peregrine birds and the cats born at the Metro Zoo. However, customer service stinks. Every time it rains my paper gets wet even in bags. I have had to drape them all over the house or just throw them away. Also, and more importantly, About every 3 to 4 weeks I am missing my channels section. I call and call and still don't get it until Monday or Tuesday even though I am told it will be "dispatched" the same day. Too bad I just paid for a six months subscription. read more

I have been a subscriber since the 1980''s but not anymore since this morning.I travel a lot during the summer,gone about 3 weeks,then back in town about 2 weeks and then gone for about 3 weeks and repeat this until Sept when I am home until the following summer. Up to now I could place a vacation stop while I was gone and get a credit, When I tried today they told me that they no longer offer a vacation credit but that they could hold the papers and deliver the 3 weeks worth when I restarted delivery.When I said I didn't want 3 weeks of old papers they said I still would have to pay for them.I cancelled my subscription and they and then they added insult to injury by stating that they would issue me a credit to my account,which was paid thru 8/21, but would charge me a $5 processing fee. I'll miss my morning paper as I drink my coffee but as with a lot of things in my life that are gone,I'll get over it. It would appear that they don't really want print subscribers any more.I predict if they continue this course of action Richmond will no longer have a daily print paper in about 5 years. Update- After contacting the publisher ,I was put in contact with the VP for Circulation and was pleasantly surprised to have the problem resolved to my satisfaction.. I like this paper and want it to succeed but I also want to warn about the subscription. I got a Sunday only delivery for three months and it never showed up even though I called repeatedly. After two months I received a few papers. Finally I discovered that it was going to my next door neighbor though our number is on the door. They renewed the subscription though I asked them not to. Papers piled up while I was gone and now I have a collection agent after me even though I called and asked for the subscription to stop afteer the end of payment each time!!! (they said it was a grace period just in case I wanted to use the account and I should have called again) Horrible cusomer service. read more

I called on Mon. 8-8-16 around 3p to get Sun. 8-7-16 newspaper with all of the coupon inserts and sales tabloids mailed to me. For the price they charge: $5.27, I shouldn't have to ask for the coupon inserts for a paper that is normally $2.00, but they left out the P&G coupons that should have been included-which I know from seeing what was in the paper at the library that it should have been in there. I had to call to request my P&G coupons last week. This week, it is now Sat. 8-13-16 3:08pm, and no one has returned my call/voice mail message asking them to call me so that I could order the back issue paper less than 30 days old as I should have been able to do, according to their voice mail announcement on (804) 649-6825. A person there I previously spoke with said they don't know where the calls/voice mail messages go to when you call the front counter that supposedly handles this. Evidently, they don't have a person taking the calls there for it to roll over to voice mail the previous times I've called. I suppose I need to contact BH Media (to escalate this matter), the parent company that bought out this paper to let them know what's happening here. I followed up with an email Tues. eve. and was given an incident # but no feedback from that either. So, so, sad. read more
